[Turn toward Obama and smile]

March 21, 2008 1:13 PM

Note the following stage direction in Gov. Bill Richardson's prepared remarks in his endorsement of Sen. Barack Obama, accidentally included in the version disseminated to the press.

"In part because of these experiences, Barack and I share a deep sense of our nation’s special responsibilities in the world.

"[Turn toward Obama and smile]

"Barack Obama, you are an extraordinary leader who has shown courage, sound judgment and wisdom throughout your career."

Richardson did turn to Obama, though he didn't smile so much.

(He'd actually just gotten done with an anecdote about Obama helping him during a debate, and it was more time to get serious.)

Richardson called for Sen. Hillary Clinton to get out of the race, though not in so many words, saying it was time for Democrats to unite and fight Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.

"It is now time for a new generation of leadership to lead," he said.

"Sound judgement" is something Obama has NOT shown (Rezko real estate deal, Uncle/Pastor Wright for 20 years, Afghani sub-committee failure, NAFTA-gate, REZKO IN GENERAL, racist remarks, etc, etc, etc....)

When I turn toward Obama and smile why does it feel like I am turned away and bending over?

Posted by: J. Russell | Mar 22, 2008 11:40:45 AM

CNN reportsd "Among Pennsylvania Democratic primary voters, Clinton's lead over Obama more than doubled from last month, according to polls.Obama's association with Wright appeared to be hurting him as of last weekend."

I think Gov. Richardson made a mistrake by endorsing Mr. Obama. These are old players who lost election after another in the past. If democrats chose Sen. Obama as their nominee, it would a mistake. Republicans are going to make Rev. Wright Sen. Obama's running-mate. It appears Hillary Clinton has the best chance to wind the White House in 08!

Posted by: charleschaplin | Mar 22, 2008 11:24:58 AM

"I made a bone-headed mistake..." Sen. Obama about his dealings with Rizko.

Posted by: charleschaplin | Mar 22, 2008 10:49:30 AM

It is interesting to see the depth of preparation involved with people of extremely high caliber such as Bill Richardson. He wanted to remember that he planned to turn towards Obama and smile at the point in the speech, but as we saw when he didn't smile much during the actual speech, at that moment, he reserved the right to feel the mood of the moment so that he could decide whether it was desirable to actually follow his planned choreography, or not. I think Bill Richardson would be an excellent choice for Obama's VP running mate, especially since Bill Richardson is the most qualified candidate out of all of the democrats who were running during this cycle.

obamaites keep telling us hillary supporters that we are old or stupid or racist or all of the above, and that we should get out of their way. we will - ever hear of the repubs? or nader? or no vote at all? we will be more than willing to NOT vote for obama. btw, i doubt he would appreciate your encouraging us to NOT vote for him. not that it we care, of course.

want jam with that toast?

irma, not to worry. i didn't see the one in question (or was to sleepy to notice), but i know how the posts all get out of order and it gets very confusing. also, sometimes i've been responding to someone's post and theirs gets deleted so mine makes no sense or vice versa. stuff happens.

i have had times when someone who was NOT me posted using my "so saddened" screen name. i reported it to abc, but never got a reply. anyway, having had that happen made me realize that if i see someone's post that doesn't fit their other posts, i should check it out before reacting.

i so enjoy reading your posts.

CLINTONS BRIBED, THREATENED, BEGGED, FELL AT RICHARDSON FEET, CRIED AND LICKED HIS BOOTS. Bill Richardson had the guts to say, enough, "I endorse Obama". This is just a beginning. Hillary got all that she can get. She should leave the race and keep Dems party united. She is continuing to divide the party.

Posted by: Pat | Mar 22, 2008 12:48:36 AM

How appropriate that Richardson would choose to betray Clinton on Good Friday.

Posted by: Mac | Mar 21, 2008 10:43:27 PM

Obama needs to go! Even the Judas Govenor needs to be reminded to smile for the devil! Go Hillary!

Posted by: Jeep395 | Mar 21, 2008 8:19:00 PM

Hey at least they were only managing and directing a smile.

Hillary managing and directing racial attacks by Geraldine was much worse. She did repeat the same comments three different times in three different venues.

And she directed Bill to try to make Obama the black candidate in South Carolina.

So, yeah, a reminder to [smile] is a big deal. What a farce of an article.

You just can't miss an opportunity to slam Obama, can you? At least come up with something substantive. If you think the stage directions you write about are unique to Obama, think again. It's the way the world works. Get over it.

American has to face now the opportunity to elect a black man. And if Obama doesn't win American will look bad..

Posted by: Haha | Mar 21, 2008 4:06:26 PM

CNN was on in the gym about an hour ago. The sound was off but the video was of an Obama speech. The speech was covered live for about 45 minutes. During the entire video there was a red banner on the bottom of the screen that read: "Breaking News: Richardson Endorses Obama."

Breaking news? Hardly. Just CNN driving home the message that the stragglers need to jump on to the Obama train before it leaves the station.

I therefore today call on all like minded americas to write congress and ask that the constiution be changed so that they can not say anything negative about Hillary! They are sexist in their reporting especially Chris Mattheews and they just want to defeat her because she is a woman?

Is Bill Richardson's endorsement a reason for Superdelegates to vote with their reasoning and not according to who won the State?

Posted by: jeff | Mar 21, 2008 3:46:17 PM

Obama set himself up for the Wright issue. Obama came out and demanded Don Imus be fired: Here is Obama's words: "He didn't just cross the line," Obama said. "He fed into some of the worst stereotypes that my two young daughters are having to deal with today in America. The notions that as young African-American women -- who I hope will be athletes -- that that somehow makes them less beautiful or less important. It was a degrading comment. It's one that I'm not interested in supporting."

"And the notion that somehow it's cute or amusing, or a useful diversion, I think, is something that all of us have to recognize is just not the case. We all have First Amendment rights. And I am a constitutional lawyer and strongly believe in free speech, but as a culture, we really have to do some soul-searching to think about what kind of toxic information are we feeding our kids," he concluded

Obama sat his own Kids in Wright's church and made no mention of the "toxic" garbage Wright fed his own kids. Talk about a double standard. Well, I guess Don Imus was "WHITE". And a typical white person at that.

Posted by: Dogsoldier | Mar 21, 2008 3:46:10 PM

Betty. He had too?!?! You mean he can be pushed around by Fox news?

Posted by: Haha | Mar 21, 2008 3:45:54 PM

Karen, you did not answer my question, why did Obama have to denounce it unless he took it out of context too! Is he IGNORANT too?

Besides, you don't know my religion so any comments about Catholics and all just do not apply to any person asking the same question.

Posted by: Dogsoldier | Mar 21, 2008 3:34:30 PM

That's David Axelrod for you.
Obama's entire campaign is a staged show.
Axelrod is running Obama's campaign like this is an "American Idol" contest instead of an election to chose the most qualified person.

Posted by: OxyCon | Mar 21, 2008 3:33:44 PM

Karen, so Obama took it out of context too!

Posted by: Haha | Mar 21, 2008 3:33:01 PM

Ken,
this is my point. What I wrote in my blog about the presidents was not America bashing. It is America's history as well as America's present. My point was not to bash America it was merely to help you and others understand the reality in which I live. I am not complaining about it. I am simply not denying it.

Posted by: ddpwoman | Mar 21, 2008 3:32:22 PM

Is Bill Richardson's endorsement a reason for Superdelegates to vote with their reasoning and not according to who won the State?

Posted by: jeff | Mar 21, 2008 3:32:07 PM

Betty: Fox News broke the story first! Then Brian Ross of ABC news on GMA showed the viedeos that he and FOX were able to purchase from the churches website I think they were sold as "the best of Rev. Wright". It took MSNBC and CBS and others two more days before they reported on it. Then it was only a small part of their reporting until it exploded!

How do you suggest that Fox News be silenced I don't think even Mr. Obama would be for that. I think he appeared on Fox last Thursday to explain the Wright story. If Fox is so bad why did he go on their network?

Posted by: russell | Mar 21, 2008 3:32:05 PM

Saying "typical" black/white/asian/latino all the time (as Obama did yesterday) is not exactly helping to close the racial gap. You are just stereotyping without any respect for people's individuality. If this is his way of getting past racial issues, then it is not working!

Posted by: Haha | Mar 21, 2008 3:30:43 PM

Betty-Is there some way we can get you to do an ad from the Obama side saying "We" have to "shut" Fox News down? God, I'd help pay for that. Russell would you help Betty get on air for this?

Posted by: Dogsoldier | Mar 21, 2008 3:27:17 PM

Here is the digg link of Rev. Wright's message in context. Please digg the link so that the rest of the world hears the truth. Wright was quoting an American Ambassador that was on fox news when he was speaking about 911. I found this very disturbing. go to 6:20 of the video this is very interesting.
I'm an Idependent. The truth about each candidate is out there. We just have to be willing to do our homework before we pass judgement. No one ever talks about almost 800 bills Senator Obama introduced in his time as state senator. Everything from child care to workers rights and ethics reform.

If you really look at his track record it has always been to help people. And to not just go along with the crowd like others have done.

Keep in mind his major was in Constitutional Law. Who better to lead our country than a Constitutional expert. Isn't that what We need most right now?

We don't need a Republican or a Democrat or a black man or a woman. We need someone who will go to work for the citizens of America. And whoever is best qualified should be our next president.

If people are willing to say anything or do anything to get elected, then that consitiutes a desire for thier own personal greed and asperations. I also question anyone who spends too much time trying to cast doubts about someone else.

America is still a young country and we need fresh young Ideas and Leadership to keep America alive and growing.

America needs to get over this stupid gang metality of I'm a Republican I'm a Democrat. We're all Americans First. and whats best for america is what we should all be thinking about.

Posted by: Laura | Mar 21, 2008 3:26:14 PM

Betty: So nice you had to say it twice!

Posted by: russell | Mar 21, 2008 3:21:28 PM

Betty: Preventing free speech is not the hallmark of democracy! What you want is only speech that praises Mr. Obama. When Fox News broke this story the MSM staye away. Then Brian Ross showed the dvd's that Rev. Wright was pushing as the best of Rev Wright and I am not joking about that. If it had not been for Fox News the MSM would have swept this under the rug. Thank God for freedom of the press!

Posted by: russell | Mar 21, 2008 3:20:10 PM

The timing of Richardson's endorsement raises questions about what might be promised to Richardson in order to make it worthwhile for him to:

1. show his disloyal to the Clintons who have been his allies and supporters in his political career
2. show that he did not care about his state voters and his Latinos community
3. show his poor judgment and integrity by endorsing Obama who believes in anti-american and hate-filled Wright's teachings.

In the long run, this endorsement does not have big impact since the Latinos have supported Clinton even when Richardson was a candidate.

Posted by: best | Mar 21, 2008 3:17:09 PM

Judy: Only if he could put into some sort of political context like Mr. Obama!

Posted by: russell | Mar 21, 2008 3:14:48 PM

If any political candidate supported the KKK in any way, even though they did not agree with some of their political views, do you think they could be elected?

Posted by: Judy | Mar 21, 2008 3:12:47 PM

Whats the deal with trashing your grandmother while you can't condemn a racist hate monger like Wright. This is what they call judgment. How many more family members will be sacrificed for his friend Wright?

Posted by: russell | Mar 21, 2008 3:11:39 PM

This is soooo funny. A lot of people are defending Wright - saying that his words were taken out of context. Then why does Obama have to denounce any of it?

Posted by: Haha | Mar 21, 2008 3:08:39 PM

NinaK-Wright. So, NinaK, how many times can Obama throw his grandmother under the bus is a week? Answer: Two . . . so far.

Posted by: Dogsoldier | Mar 21, 2008 3:07:53 PM

Russell-Perhaps we might ask Betty. One hour story on MSNBC Olbermann last night over the Obama passport issue. Think Olbermann will do the same for Clinton or McCain? Hey, Betty we want fair and balanced will you demand Olbermann do an hour on Clinton's passport and another hour on McCain's passport? Betty?

Posted by: Dogsoldier | Mar 21, 2008 3:03:36 PM

Dogsolider: I am still waiting for Mr. Olberman's special comments concerning Rev. Wright! I am also waiting for an apology for saying that she may have had something to do with this passport spying! I am sure they were ready to churn out another special comment connecting Hillary to this story. But a funny thing happened their theory, it appears that Hillary is a victim too! No I am sure they will say it was just a ploy to draw attention away from her spying!

Posted by: russell | Mar 21, 2008 2:57:56 PM

Thinking-Same old politics needs to change? Well, you guys got Kennedy, Kerry, Dashle, Polosi, Richardson, Sharpton, and Jessie Jackson. Not to mention most of Bill's old guard on Obama's staff including Bill's speech writers. Same old same old to me. Personally speaking, they all look good on you guys.

Posted by: Dogsoldier | Mar 21, 2008 2:55:04 PM

Throughout this campaign Kerry has said that the great thing about Obama is that he is able to transend race and that he is not a black canidate but rather a canidate who happens to be black. Yesterday he tells a MA newspaper that Obama should become president because he is black and therefore could more easily work with Muslim Countries. It appears that Kerry and others are willing to use race when ever they feel that it gives them some political advantage!

Posted by: russell | Mar 21, 2008 2:51:20 PM

Betty-Once again, I noticed you did not mention CNN and MSNBC? Why? They openly cheer and openly support Obama that why! And you love that so it isn't fair and balanced you want because you want Fox to become another cheering section for Obama like CNN and MSNBC.

Posted by: Dogsoldier | Mar 21, 2008 2:48:23 PM

I wonder if Olbermann is jockeying for White House Press Secretary? Now all of the media bias and swooning for Obama is starting to make sense to me!

Posted by: LOM | Mar 21, 2008 2:45:33 PM

How many of you are willing to throw your money away because it holds the image of slave owners on it? My guess is none on this blog. Neither can we afford to throw away this message of unity that's being spoken by Mr. Obama.

Posted by: ddpwoman | Mar 21, 2008 2:40:58 PM

and to the Foxnews comments

I agree
but I have to say

this morning Brian (the dark haired guy) finally went and tried to stop the spin a little...

He argued saying Obama was fighting for racial truce and that the online groups were just spinning this... and exploiting a situation to some extent.

You could almost see in his eyes a recognition of what ship he realized he was on.

Posted by: dl | Mar 21, 2008 2:38:24 PM

Barak Obama continues to defend his relationship with Jeremiah Wright, the monger of hate, racism, and treason.

Perhaps the questionable behavior of New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson will work to divert some attention.

Posted by: Ken | Mar 21, 2008 2:37:58 PM

Richardson's endorsement did not seem genenuine, it seemed strained. Like it was forced upon him anyways.

Posted by: Logic | Mar 21, 2008 2:34:27 PM

Brenna,
The difference is it was a prayer breakfast, and President Clinton didn't sit in his church and listen to garbage every Sunday. I'm sick of people making excuses for Obama doing exactly that. He needs to step up and take responsibility, and quit diverting attention to race to avoid the hard questions.

Posted by: DWC | Mar 21, 2008 2:34:25 PM

I agree on that too...I think the difference between Clinton and McCain is not huge on many things...

but I think the difference between likeability and trustworthiness is the big factor....

...and how they make their judgements is a huge difference. I think McCain's first thought is ...is that the "right" decision...
second thought "does that get me elected"

Senator Clinton is "does that get me elected"...and ...actually I don't honestly think she thinks the other... I think honestly she thinks about how the other effects her personally or how she is personally perceived...that is her right and wrong margin it seems...

I honestly think Barack thinks "Is that the right thing to do" then "How will it effect how people perceive me" and then "will it get me elected"

Again I was angry about the words of the pastor until I started to think about ...that idea of ...what if it were a white pastor who was a vietnam vet and angry about how his fellow vets had been treated for the past 30 years.

I can see a pastor like that saying "G.D. America...for the way his fellow vets were disregarded"

Posted by: dl | Mar 21, 2008 2:32:20 PM

If I were Richardson I would be careful he may get the grandma treatment!

Posted by: russell | Mar 21, 2008 2:31:56 PM

Brenna, you just don't get it do you? Obama had a 17-20 year relationship with Rev. Wright. Rev. Wright performed the ceremony at his wedding. Rev. Wright baptized his two daughters. He went to Rev. Wrights's church and listened to his sermons saying vile things about the US. With REZKO, he again had a 17 year relationship with, accepted $250,000 in donations, and purchased his home at the same time that Rezko (through his wife) purchased the side lot that had to be purchased at the same time. This all reflects poorly on Obama's judgment. He is not ready to be president, his judgment is the issue

Posted by: svsolis | Mar 21, 2008 2:30:37 PM

I have lost all respect for Gov. Richardson. I thought he was an honorable man, who at least was going to stay neutral at this point. The only reason I see for him endorsing now is he wants the VP job, as it obviously can't be because of Sen. Obama's great judgmentthat he has been flaunting! I have no use for back stabbing "friends", in politics or anything else.

Posted by: DWC | Mar 21, 2008 2:29:39 PM

Good for Richardson to go against the will of his constituents. Nobody should be angry then when the rest of the superdelegates vote their CONSCIENCE

Posted by: LOM | Mar 21, 2008 2:29:22 PM

Well, it seems nearly every idiot has joined forces with Obama. It's funny about Richardson. Hillary won his state and without Bill he'd not even have his job right now. I sure hope they vote that piece of yuck OUT OF OFFICE soon. I don't think Obama has a chance to win and I am certain he is a racist.

Posted by: Gregory | Mar 21, 2008 2:29:01 PM

Now we know that someone was looking at her too. I don't think they will say that they were wrong! Do you call that fair and balanced?

ddpwoman: If you had been listening to Mr. Obama on the radio yesterday you would have heard him call his grandmother a typical white woman because she had a fear of black men. What Mr. Obama refused to say was that in his book Dreams of MY Father he said that he also had the same fear when he first went to the west side of Chicago. He aslo left out the part of the story that his grandmother had been assualted by black men while waiting for a bus. Her fear may not be justifed in racial terms but they were not irrational given the circumstances.

Texas is over. Exactly, check. Is DNC on side? Absolutely, check. Is Dean on side? Obama man, check. Do I have to stick my butt out on this? No, thank God, check! Posted by: Dogsoldier | Mar 21, 2008 2:13:03 PM

In light of his relationship with the Clintons, how DARE he make a statement like that. He should have stayed neutral out of loyalty, but if you're going to endorse don't recommend that Hillary bow out of the race. Pretty much half the Democrats in this country still want Clinton and this fight is nowhere near over -- plus with the incredible negatives Obama now carries due to Rev. Wright, every superdelegate has to be taking pause if they want to win in November. Pundits are so concerned about the party losing black voters if Clinton gets the nomination -- well how about ticked-off white women? I think they're underestimating us.

Can you imagine if the press got a copy of something saying "turn and smile at Barack" ?? hahahahah

The Clintons taking their polarizing personalities and self-destructive scorched earth destructiveness into the Democratic Primaries have severely messed up the chances of Barack Obama running with one of those lovely female Governors as VP.

Bill Richardson is a good guy; but my gaad what a 'little' sneak? lol

OMG, how embarrassing for the Obama people!!

Turn and smile?? What phonies!

This endorsement is being pushed by Howard Dean and Nancy Pelosi to try and stop the hemoraging of obama. Those instructions to smile are really more proof of that. It is too LATE no one will forget about the
Anti-American remarks of his mentor of 20 years.

"Clinton won New Mexico"?

Well, yes, in the end, but they to count for days till came up with the 49% - 48% result. If you look at the popular vote there, it was more a tie than win.
