Wright and Wrong
March 14, 2008 9:41 AM
Let's just say it: some of Rev. Jeremiah Wright's theories and sermons have been, well, shall we say "out there."
Like, for instance, the notion that the U.S. government started the AIDS virus.
Or his "God damn, America!" speech.
Brian Ross took a look at Wright yesterday, the Wall Street Journal does today, and yesterday we pointed out that despite Obama's attempt to dismiss these questions by portraying Wright as some kindly old uncle, the reverend has an official role on the Obama campaign.
The Wright issue is not going away for Mr. Obama. The campaign of Sen. John McCain sent out the WSJ op-ed this morning to reporters. His views will be painted as radical and anti-American, and Obama will be asked which ones he agrees with and which ones he doesn't.
McCain, you may recall, was pushed to disassociate himself from some of the more controversial comments of Pastor John Hagee -- and unlike Wright with Obama, Hagee is hardly McCain's spiritual adviser, nor did he marry McCain to either of his wives.
But the Obama campaign seems to think that by holding its breath and closing its eyes this will all go away.
I don't get the sense it will. What do you think?

The thing everyone seems to be forgetting is that in most families it is the wife who initially picks the church. The question we should be asking is does Michelle Obama agree with Rev Wright? and if she does, is this the person we want as First Lady.

20 years is a long, long time to listen to anti America rhetoric. Why is it that this black man can be so racist and no one say anything..? If this man were white can you even imagine what would have happened to him? I am tired of this deplorable separatist rhetoric. If we don't stick together we will sink, all of us, color notwithstanding. Mr. Obama shame on you for not defending one America. By the way, it would be nice if Mr. Obama actually did state positions ... does he have any? I can't seem to find straight answers on his site or when he talks... Hillary isn't the answer either - don't they have ANYONE else who could run and not screw this up???

What gets me, all these people that denounce this pastors comments are the same ones cheering and screaming in his sermons. When these people are in the public eye they pretend like they knew nothing, and disagreed with these views. But on video, they are all jumping up and down yelling “Right on Bro!”. A bunch of Hypocrites.

I am an African immigrant who supports Obama. Let me just say that I knew that Obama was going to run into trouble because of the actions of his Black American supporters. I knew it, I knew it, I knew it. I have never understood some of the capricious and immature views of Black American leaders, but I knew that one of them will ruin it for Obama-a man who does not think like them and whom, quite frankly they do not deserve.
I know that Obama is not about divisive politics at all, and that he loves his country and is not hostile towards Whites. His mother is White!!!
It is just that in becoming part of the Black community, , he became part of a community that can not seem to grow up!

Bingo. Obama is soon to be unemployed. His fall will make Gary Hart's and Edmond Muskie's look like molasses on a cold day.It will be complete and utter free fall.
This is so sad because Reverend Wright has set race relations back 50 years and it all started in his church. He has done more to harm black folks than anyone else and it starts with the demise of Senator Obama.
Obama had to know this was coming. He must have believed the trash or he would have voted with his feet. Otherwise, the only other excuse is extreme bad judgment.
More importantly, how could such a large congregation baptized with the spew of so much venom have been missed for so long by so many before the hate monger came close to influencing the highest office of our nation and the world. This was a close call. This was no Messiah. This might have been an Antichrist.

I want to thank ABC for having the courage to do this piece. ABC will be my first source for news. I know Ronald Kessler, among others, has been trying to get this issue the attention it deserves for over a year. But the MSM has been so busy fawning over Barack HOPE Obama they they refused to do their jobs.

Obama's chickens are coming home to roost, to paraphrase his church's "retiring" pastor. His candidacy will not survive this many lies and misrepresentations, whatever the color of his skin.
No one should be a candidate for American President with such evil, hate-mongering associates. Those who choose to look the other way, do at your own peril.

Umm...Obama has not been "holding his breath" on this one. Check out his response on Huffington Post or his interview on AC 360 or on Olbermann.

i see comments that obama needs to leave that church, denounce it, etc. too little too late. there is absolutely nothing he can do to erase the taint of this. cnn and nbc/msnbc will do everything they can to try to spin it or ignore it, but the rest of the media, like abc, won't. and we bloggers won't. and if the dnc doesn't see the light and put a stop to this guy, they'll learn that we remember. dean, your spot as head of the dnc is gone. mccaskill and sebelius, start planning your next career. ditto for all the rest. in the meantime, president mccain will run the country. (btw, i'm a lifelong dem, so don't waste your breath calling me a closet repub).

I just saw Mr. Obama interviewed on Fox News. He was questioned about his pastor and what he knew about these sermons. I don't believe that he didn't know these things were being said. Not unless he slept during church! You can't be a member for 20 years and attend fairly regularly and not know what goes on. The fairy tale is over!

If you disagree with Sen. Obama's judgement you are "racist." If you disagree with Pres. Bush's judgement you are "anti-American." Tell me what the big wonderful change is supposed to be. Both have poor judgement and they and their supporters attack when people point that out.

The following April 30, 2007 New York Times article shows that Barack Obama has known that Reverend Wright has preached controversial sermons (i.e the recently presented ones are racist, hateful and divisive)and that they agreed that he may have to distance himself. Clearly Mr. Obama chose long ago to stay with a preacher who preaches racist, hateful, divisive sermons. Poor judgment. Not what we would expect from a candidate whose main campaign themes are his excellent judgment and his ability to be a uniter.
NYT April 30, 2007: "Mr. Wright, who has long prided himself on criticizing the establishment, said he knew that he may not play well in Mr. Obama’s audition for the ultimate establishment job."
“If Barack gets past the primary, he might have to publicly distance himself from me,” Mr. Wright said with a shrug. “I said it to Barack personally, and he said yeah, that might have to happen.”
The NYT article also explains that Barack Obama listened to recordings of Reverend Wright's sermons while Mr. Obama was in Harvard Law School in order to learn how to speak in a way that moves audiences like the way his pastor did. So he has been planning this for a long time and listening to these sermons for a long time yet now he claims that he has heard "love" and other positive sermons rather than racist, hateful, divisive sermons. Hard to believe.

Barrack Obama has a long supposedly, deep friendship with this guy. None of this is new to him, and his long association show his colors.
Obama is scary.

Why can't Pastor Wright talk about his experience of being Black in America without it being perceived as racist? I am Black and work for an institution that is over 90% White, graduated with honors from predominantly White undergraduate and grad programs. If you watched any of the programming on PBS last month, you'd know that racism against Blacks flourishes. I don't think I'm racist or anti-White to say that the institutional policies of this country disenfranchised Blacks for many years. My parents (age 61 and 66) weren't even allowed to attend my alma mater because it was Whites only until the early 70's. It is probably difficult for Pastor Wright to forget the institutional racism that existed during his lifetime or the racial indignities that still exist. How does speaking about the positive things Blacks should do to and for each other equate to anti anyone else? How is it wrong to speak about the US policies that have valued American lives more than those of other countries? 9/11 was deplorable, so was the bombing of Japan, Japanese interment camps, the Holocaust, many of the "civil wars" around the world, ethnic cleansing, and our current slaughter of Iraqi civilians and patriotic US troops serving around the world. How can we pick and choose what is most horrible just because we're experiencing the suffering first-hand? I probably wouldn't have used the words that Pastor Wright used, but I'm having trouble disagreeing with the sentiment.

NBC/WSJ 03/07 - 03/10 43% 47% Clinton +4.0%
Oh Mat, there are dozens of polls out there. Some show Obama leading and some show Hillary leading.
If you average all of them out , he is leading her by 1.7 %. It's called a dead heat.
