A Gutsy Stabenow Speaks on the Senate Floor
April 02, 2008 3:37 PM
Her husband's admission to Michigan police that he paid a prostitute hit the headlines today, but an undeterred Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., took to the Senate floor this afternoon to advocate for a foreclosure relief bill.
"In Michigan these are not families that were flipping their houses or speculating on real estate," she said. "These are hard working families that have played by the rules their entire lives."
Stabenow added that "in Michigan we've been in recession for quite some time now. We are tough in Michigan, and resilient, and working hard to bring new opportunities and new industries."
Amen to the tough part, senator.
The Detroit Free Press reported today that Stabenow's husband Thomas Athans, also known for founding a liberal talk radio network, told cops in February that he paid $150 for sex.
You can read the police report, obtained by the Free Press through the Freedom of Information Act, HERE if you'd like to know more about Detective Mork, the Residence Inn near Big Beaver Road, and 20-year-old Alycia Lorraine Martin whose advertisement can be found HERE.
It's all pretty sad.
And Stabenow coming to the floor of the Senate is pretty gutsy.
ABC News' Z. Byron Wolf noted not only that Stabenow had the fortitude to come to speak on the Senate floor today, but that she was followed by Sen. David Vitter, R-La.

Yes, another classy lady.

Classy Lady, i have watched her over the years on c-span and she is great for Michigan. She needs to get that husband of hers out of her life and just keep doing the great work for people of Michigan. Keep working hard and the 15 min's will pass. Once again a very CLASSY LADY!!!!!

She DOES deserve some scrutiny and is not a completely innocent victim, just like Hillary. Their publicity photo depicts a mis-matched, power couple, marriage of opportunity. Each one is trading off their partner’s position as politician and liberal media executive. Ignoring their vows for love or sex should be expected in this type of relationship.

I don't blame the guy. Did you see her picture.

And this is news exactly how? Senator Stabenow's husband was the one who screwed up-- not the senator. Senator Stabenow has been a wonderful representative of the state of Michigan and continues to work for us. It makes no difference to me that someone who is NOT a public official got caught doing something stupid. I feel sorry for the senator- its an embarrassing situation but hardly a political scandal. Put it to rest.

women never do anything like this? better check all the stories about female teachers and their teen age students

See how strong she is: caught in this mess, and still works for the people of Michigan. Would not be easy to do in this situation.
Leave the poor woman alone, she didn't do anything wrong. Keep up the good work Debbie, and you will always have my vote.

Good for her. Maybe she is glad, she is busy. Who has time for such stuff. Leave her alone.

It's amazing to me that Vitter's and Craig managed to stay in office. Craig will not be running for re-election but will get his full benefit package.
Trent Lott resigned quick, as soon as allegations of him taking a young blonde male esort on many business trips and vacations.

The only time that stabenow makes the local press is when she has a run-in with the law. Her creditials are flaky at best. She could claim she had an affair with the mayor of detroit.

are most of these morons from a different planet?

Billy apparently is not voting for anyone still running either.
Unless I am mistaken, "they are all 3 politicians"!
Posted by: MC | Apr 2, 2008 5:27:11 PM
I wonder who cynical supports.
It surely isn't one of the 3 candidates still in the Presidential "thing"!
They have all had to backtrack, apologize, deny, etc.
Maybe his candidate "ain't running no more"!

MIguy,
you said, "A little compassion for the woman and her family, folks. She has been a great voice for us here in Michigan and deserves some consideration. This is not about Obama or Clinton so please post somewhere else where it is relevant."
I'd just like to say thank you for that comment. It seems compassion has been very hard to come by these days.

Uh Clinton subverted justice in a civil rights case over sexual harrasssment (THE HORROR!!! THE HORROR!!!) and has been accussed of far more harrowing crimes. (Like that pesky Broaadrick case that NBC refused to air) Uh, any of you self-righteous harpies wanna look in the mirror while your patting yourselves saying "yo go Girl" and the sympathy party? Right. Right. Whatever ladies. Denial works wonders, if you do it well enough, you may even one day become President!
Posted by: cynical | Apr 2, 2008 4:45:55 PM
Man... This about one lady, and what she did in the face of adversity.
Then other names, accusations, vitriole start flying.
Yep. We're going to be united!
Posted by: MC | Apr 2, 2008 4:41:32 PM
Classy! and as you said very gutsy!

I think you need to watch the news CBA. In the most recent sex scandals that involved Republicans Vitter and Craig, neither resigned. They were directly involved in the commission of a crime. Senator Stabenow was not.

All this embarassment for "15 minutes" as stated in the police report? It is sad for all concerned.
Should this have any effect on Stabenow? I would hope not. I cannot see how she is even tangentially responsible for her husband's weaknesses.

Has Vitter resigned?
Posted by: GEEVILL | Apr 2, 2008 4:16:01 PM
There is NOTHING "gutsy" about damge control. DUH!!!
Posted by: cba | Apr 2, 2008 4:16:01 PM
uh, SHE isn't the one who hired a prostitute or solicited gay sex in a public restroom, so it's unclear as to why you ask if it means she should she resign - duh??
Posted by: Charlene Whitney | Apr 2, 2008 4:06:45 PM
vparker, you're right, women never do stuff like this, like going to prostitutes. They just become teachers and seduce their young boy students. Or drown their own kids, or some other horrors.
Start watching the news - you might learn just what women are capable of doing, and it ain't all sugar and spice.
Posted by: Jo | Apr 2, 2008 4:05:10 PM
Poor debbie, all the work she has done for women and girls and now her husband did this and with a very young girl. It breaks my heart. Women NEVER do things like this and that is why I, like Dee Dee Myers, think women should rule the world.
Posted by: vparker | Apr 2, 2008 4:02:44 PM
Does this mean that she has to resign... oh wait, Democrat, then there's no problem. Right. Does this mean she gets to play the victim card like Hilliary? Great, now she'll run for President in four years too!
