Audio: Clinton Camp Testing Attacks on Obama
April 25, 2008 10:56 AM
On Wednesday, Obama-backing musician in Black Mountain, North Carolina, David LaMotte, got a phone call from a pollster for Sen. Hillary Clinton, Garin-Hart-Yang, in which negative messages against Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, were being tested.
The Garin in Garin-Hart-Yang, incidentally, is Geoff Garin, who has an op-ed in today's Washington Post complaining that the Obama campaign is the one that's negative, not Clinton.
Ahem.
"I'm going to read you a few criticisms opponents might make about Barack Obama," the pollster said. "For each one please tell me if they give you very major doubts, fairly major doubts, some doubts or no real doubts about supporting Barack Obama for president.
"At a time when we need leaders who are clear, strong and decisive, Obama has been inconsistent, saying he would remove all troops, but then indicating that he might not, and pledging to renegotiate NAFTA, but then sending signals that he would not actually do so as president.
'He supported George W. Bush's 2005 energy bill which paid six billion dollars in subsidies to the oil and gas industry, nine billion dollars in subsidies to the coal industry and twelve billion dollars in subsidies to the nuclear power industry. It was called 'a piñata of perks' and 'the best energy bill corporations could buy.' Would that leave you with major doubts, some doubts or no real doubts?"
You can listen to some of the call, which LaMotte record and emailed to me, HERE.
Says LaMotte, in an email, "the questions, as you'll hear, are unanswerable if you don't accept the basic premises laid out in them, like the classic push poll example 'Are you still beating your wife?' You can't answer that 'yes or no.' I don't accept that Barack pledged to walk away from NAFTA OR that he 'sent signals' that he wouldn't really do it as president, both of which are premises for the question. Like Hillary, he pledged to renegotiate, and to walk away if other parties refused. And having unpaid staff in a misrepresented casual conversation in Chicago over coffee with someone from the Canadian embassy I don't accept as 'sending signals.' So how do I answer this question: 'Would that leave you with major doubts, some doubts or no real doubts about Senator Obama's candidacy?' Well... if it were true, it might leave me with some doubts, but it's not, and that's not an option for an answer."
LaMotte adds that "the really sad part of this is that I was excited to be a part of a poll. Unlike a lot of people that would have considered it a nuisance, I've been following the polls around the country closely, and I was thrilled to have the opportunity to weigh in on one in my own state. It was terribly disappointing to realize that I was just being manipulated. It's hard to see how these could generate any useful data either, given that most Obama supporters would simply hang up offended when the questions got so insulting. That leaves you with data that is skewed pro-Clinton."
Incidentally, LaMotte would be happy to hear from you on his blog.

Why is this only here? This is an official part of Hillary's campaign.
Is ABC afraid to report slander because of it's own shoddy recent past?
C'mon, earn some credibility and report this front and center.

My mother always used to tell me, " You can tell a person's character by the company that he keep." Wright's message it seems has been quite consistent for a while now and he has definitely influenced the Obama's because in unintended moments it comes through. For e.g. Michelle when she makes statements about just recently being "proud" of America, or when Obama makes statements about middle America being " bitter" and "clinging" to their guns and religion. Wright has influenced their way of thinking and public speaking no matter how you choose to interpret it.

"In her last two contests alone Hillary has won with a combined 20% over Senator Obama.
Obama lost in a landslide in Ohio and PA."
Right. Nevermind the Wyoming caucus and Mississippi primary which fell between OH and PA, where Obama won 61-38 and 61-37, respectively.
Not only that, but if Clinton wants to talk popular vote that tally is skewed as well, since not all the caucus states kept a popular vote tally, which by Clinton logic makes those states matter less than, well, states that she won. You say Obama is alienating people. Hillary alienates whole states (caucus states don't count, "red" states don't count - did it ever occur to her that people in those red states might be worth fighting for...possibly turning those into "blue" states?).
Between the push-polling, the changing of what she feels are the deciding factors (first pledged delegates, then popular vote, next will probably be hair length), agreeing to shut out Florida and Michigan, only to change course when it serves to her advantage, and the lack of transparency of her campaign (if you can't keep a campaign out of red figures, I don't want you spending my tax money), if her and Bill are truly the leaders of the Democratic party, then there is either going to no longer be a Democratic Party, or the Clintons will need to form their own third party.
It's clear they have no intention to do what is right for the party, so they might as well go on their own.
The early 20th century had the Bull Moose party, I guess the Clintons' would be the Bull Mess party.

As a lifelong DEM for over 25 years I call on the Super Del. to endorse and back Senator Hillary Clinton. She is the best choice for America. In her last two contests alone Hillary has won with a combined 20% over Senator Obama.
Obama lost in a landslide in Ohio and PA.
Hillary connects with the white vote the way Obama can't. It has been proven in election after election that Obama can't win a majority of white votes of all backgrounds and Hispanics. Also, the lower income proud people and women of all backgrounds can't be won by Obama in mass.
Us Hillary supporters are asking for your backing. Hillary and us will welcome Obama and his supporters.
If Hillary is not the nominee there will be no DEM in the WH. A vast majority of us see Obama as a no experienced DEM. Also, we see Obama and his followers as cult like. And we don't vote cult. Ever. And we wouldn't vote for Obama if he were the last person on earth. If Hillary is not the nominee her suppoters will vote in mass to either:
Mc Cain
stay home
Nader
Become Indep.
And Obama will NEVER BE PRESIDENT without a mass amount of Hillary voters. Obama will never get that. We DON'T TRUST OBAMA AND WE WON'T VOTE FOR HIM. We will leave the party, never to return and take our millions in donations with us.
We are the backbone of the party. We are always there for the DEMS. But if you choose to nominate Obama, you will have left us. You will have thrown your loyal DEMS over the side for a unknown.
Obama and his cult fickle supporters will bring down the DEM party. When we don't vote for Obama he loses in a landslide to Mc Cain. Then his cult followers leave the DEM party for greener ground and we will never return unless Hillary is the leader again.
The Clintons are leaders of the DEM party and if you throw them over board, you throw us. When you show the Clintons no respect, you show us NO respect.
A DEM can only be in the WH if Hillary is the nominee. She will beat Mc Cain on issue after issue Obama can't. It is up to you to get the DEM party back in the WH. Please bear this in mind when your making your decsion.
And Hillary as well as President Clinton are wonderful people. But if you should choose to decide on Obama, nothing they will say will sway the way we feel about Obama. Unlike Obamas cult, we follow our own will. Another reason you should pick Hillary. His people will do what ever he tells them to. We think for oursleves and nothing will change that.
We want a DEM in the WH so much. But only Hillary because she is the most experienced and trusted person between Obama, Mc Cain and Hillary. And please allow all the votes to be counted including FL and MI.
Between my family, friends and I there are 24 of us that will never vote for Obama. And we are in touch with other Hillary supporters that will never, ever vote for Obama. All of us have donated hundreds of thousands over several decades to the DNC. We stopped over a month ago when Hillary was being treated less than human buy the DNC.
Support Hilary and show the Clintons and her supporters that you give us the respect we deserve.

HoosierSue,
Amen. Did you know Obama didn't step foot on the mainland of America until he went to college in LA. He has no idea about state side American values. Hawaii and Indo. are great but there is no accounting for good old fashioned American values. Obama has no idea what that means. He can never be president of all of us. Obama has no clue.

It is tea time at the Obama home. He is so full of it. Obama and his people wine all day, everyday about NOTHING. If you can't stand the heat Obama, get the he!! out of the kitchen!
And if you can't stand up to Hillary how in the he!! are you going to defend America against terror treats. OMG if this wimp gets anywhere near the WH!
And Obama you want to be president? Hah,hah,hah,hah,hah,hah....you cry at the drop of a hat. Go Home!

Thanks for reporting this.
C'mon, people--speak up when you hear and read of this kind of distortion and manipulation. It's insulting and disrespectful of our intelligence, and it's damaging to our nation.
If Clinton engages in this kind of behavior as a candidate, can you imagine the deceit and abuse of power we'd be subjected to with a Hillary Clinton presidency?
I, for one, do not want to find out. We can't afford to as a nation. We've had year after year of it, and look where we are now?
We all deserve better!

The focus of the pollster's op-ed was the fact that the Obama campaign's attacks on Senator Clinton have been extraordinarily personal in nature, attacking her character-- she is portrayed as calculating and not to be trusted. The recorded phone call merely demonstrates that the Clinton campaign is attacking Senator Obama's policy positions and record. Policy should be the central focus of the campaign-- not personality. The media is comfortable talking about personality in stereotyped ways--they are always pushing the line that Obama is fresh and inspiring while Clinton is caluclating and not to be trusted. If only the media had the smarts and talent to discuss policy without always returning to their soap opera of heros and villains.

This is one Ind. that would never vote for Hillary. It's not personal, it's business. The woman is a liar. I can't believe she is bringing up this NAFTA stuff. She didn't push NAFTA and din't like it. Yet, video tape of her clearly showing her supporting it and going to dinners etc. to push the idea. Oh and let us not forget Mark Penn!!! This woman is morally challenged and no way in hell would I ever trust her with any policy. The Dems have my vote come Nov. But, if she is the nominee my vote goes to Nadar. And in 2012, I volunteer and run a massive grassroots effort from my very living to help defeat her - when a more capable woman runs....

I am a former Marine and quite frankly anyone who can make up a story about BEING FIRED AT BY SNIPERS IS JUST DOWN RIGHT SICK AND DECEPTIVE (not someone fit to be Commander and Chief). I do not want a President who is willing to make up a story in order to get my vote. This Administration DID THAT AND NOW WE ARE IN A WAR BASED ON LIES (the only WMD in Iraq, thanks to GWB, is Al Qaeda).
People please wake up look beyond color! Those who say Obama talks, talks, talks, I agree: he talked talked about not going to war with Iraq because it was not in the best interest of Americans. He is talking about a health care plan that will not impose a fine if YOU choose not to enroll. He is now talking about not putting a band aide on the oil crisis in the form a holiday tax because money will be diverted from our infrastructures; we may literally take our lives in our hands when crossing a bridge to or from home. In closing the bottom line is that so many of us listen to the media whose main purpose is to increase ratings and not present the TRUTH. Remember the McCarthy Era, when innocent Americans lost everything because they were unjustly called "Reds" simply because they associated with other American with views opposite of theirs; Remember the injustices millions in this country suffered because of fear and hatred. For the sake of the next generation, we must strive for a future that allows us to have a better voice in our government despite our economic status.
Here is a quote from a man born over 100 years ago with an insight to last all eternity.
"THERE IS BUT ONE WAY TO KNOW THE TRUTH, and that is not a golden one. It is fraught with toil and sacrifice and perhaps RIDICULE. The seeker of the truth must be fearless, he MUST NOT BE AFRAID TO ENTER THE INNERMOST HOLIES OF HOLIES, and to tear down the veils of superstition that hang about any human and so-called divine institution. IT IS THE TRUTH THAT MAKES MEN FREE. If the truth tears down every church and government under the sun, let the truth be known and THIS TRUTH ONLY WILL BE KNOWN WHEN MEN CEASE TO SWALLOW THE CAPSULES OF ANCIENT DOCTORS OF DIVINITIES AND POLITICS; and when men begin to seek the truth in the records of history, politics, religion, and science."

I call on 100 superdelegates to openly declare their support for Obama before Indiana and South Carolina. It is time. Hillary Clinton has switched sides. There can be no doubt she is the stealth republican candidate.

My comment is that I would have told the caller, "Shame on you." It is one thing for Clinton to use this type of politics, it is what defines her. But the success of this type of smear campaign depends on those who 'follow the orders'. There are some jobs that integrity just won't allow one to take. This would be one of those.
Unfortunately, the MSM is drug addicted to the story of Rev. Wright and his every move, a story that has no bearing on the campaign or who could best govern this country. But the actions of the candidates, such as in this example, is never seen. Shame on this country!
Posted by: Debra | Apr 26, 2008 11:43:33 AM
S. Valenti, Michelle Obama was not talking abiut Hillary Clinton, when she said, "if you can't manage your own house". S
he was actually talking about Obama's decision to run for President and the Obama family's decision to make ensure as little disruption to their children's lives and daily schedules as possible.
I am so tired of this soundbite culture and people's willingness to take positions and make important decisions based on misinformation ... on all sides of this political debate!
Posted by: Tired of Games | Apr 26, 2008 8:41:05 AM
This story is massive. How dare a political campaign act in such a callous and manipulative manner?
I hope other candidates do not do this 'research'. If this is not illegal then at least I hope the American people find it unelectable.

Lear - Yes, actions speak louder than words, but in politics, actions can be misinterpreted if critical details are left out...
My point is that Obama is absolutely right about the special interests and their maneuverings in Washington. This bill highlights the struggle that has existed for getting important energy policy changes in place legislatively against the will of these special interest groups. The DEMS shouldn't have had to compromise with the Oil companies to get green issues on the table - the Bush administration should have taken the lead and tabled bills to that effect, but, alas, they were always in the deep pockets of these businesses. Remember that Bush is really an oil exec plant- his sole purpose for being in office is the advance their interests; that's what he did as Texas governor as well. It's also why the Iraq war was fought - to replace the UN's control of Iraqi oil with US oil companies influence and control. Thats the level of control that big business interests have in politics these days. They pick presidents while making you THINK that you do. How else do you explain the fact that Bush got two terms while clearly being incompetent?
Posted by: Mike | Apr 26, 2008 12:50:57 AM
please show me a link to some proof of these bundled donations you speak of. I haven't seen it myself.
And contrary to popular belief, i DO know that Obama isn't perfect. None of them are. Your all should recognize that they each have their good and bad qualities.
I don't believe either of the Senators' healthcare stances are that great because they are efficient. They are still based on insurance companies and drug companies that profit off of our health. If anything shouldn't be based on profit, it's the healthcare system. And McCain's war stance upsets me profoundly. We need the Iraqis to take charge of their own country. We can't fix it FOR them.
Oh and I don't think Hillary should drop out. I think they should just focus on issues. If they would just be more positive, then campaigning in EVERY state ISNT a bad thing! We are setting up strong grassroots campaigns in every state that can mobilize again for the general election. How is that bad? If they would focus on policies and world events and such, both would be better off.
Posted by: Lindsey | Apr 26, 2008 12:50:14 AM
Typical political spin is all that this is. Clinton's trying to use the fact that Obama voted for the Cheney oil bill against him. Cleverly she tries to make a case of 'action speaks louder than words'. However, to do that she left out major details that show why NEARLY all of the DEMS AND REPUBLICANS VOTED for this bill. The fact is that the reason the tax break was asked for was that the American oil companies wanted more money to expand their capacity to convert crude oil. They also wanted to do more exploration and tried to get into Alaska again and the initial bill was tossed out. The Dems wanted a mandatory plan included that called for mandatory spending of billions of this money on green research and climate change studies and the Oil companies eventually conceded. That's why Obama and the majority of the DEMS voted for this bill - not because of any benefits to oil companies but because it made their green research spending mandatory in spite of Bush's opposition to dealing with the climate change issue. That's why you shouldn't listen to clips of info to make fundamental decision. Clinton opposed the bill because she has undeniable ties to overseas oil in Saudi Arabia. The actions of American oil companies to expand their own oil assets is in direct competition with Gulf oil as it lessens American dependence oil foreign oil in the long run.
Posted by: Mike | Apr 26, 2008 12:25:02 AM
@Lindsay: Such as talking the game of *not* taking oil PAC money, but leaving out the pesky little detail about all the bundled donations of Big Oil Execs? Yes, let's discuss Obama's vision for the futherance of Corp America ownership of the nation in the same way Bush/Cheney envision.
Posted by: UnHolyTruth | Apr 26, 2008 12:21:08 AM
Those of you who doubt Senator Obama's capabilities or the "substance" of his campaign, please educate yourself first and then you can complain justly if you still feel that way. All his experiences and stances on issues and plans are on his website in a very user friendly way. It's easy to find the issues that you feel strongly about. Also if you want to hear the context of Rev. Wright's speech I believe the entire sermon is on CNN's website.
But please, if you want to argue, than argue over SUBSTANTIAL ISSUES and not 6 degrees of separation and flag pins. I am offended that the media and Washington thinks these non-issues sways my political opinions. Don't any of you feel like they are insulting your intelligence when they continually talk about that stuff for any politician. Let's discuss issues that will affect the world!

Unfortunately for Jake Tapper, ABC News, and those blindly following the pied-piper, the 'allegations' within these polling questions are matters of Obama's voting record. Nothing more, nothing less. If their thin-skin can't take the heat of Obama's own indisputable voting recird during his 2 Years in the Senate, get out of the kitchen!

Garin is right and the news media know it.
What the Democrats for a number of years cannot stand that Obama prevented two of our states from voting. That is a fatal flaw of the Democrats. Just because Hillary wanted to even allow them to revote will not be remembered. It will be remembered a black man Obamo Huesein did not allow all the people to have a vote. The Republicans will laugh and use this for years.

Are you a registered Democrat? Yes? OK.
Please think about the tactics used by Sen. Clinton's campaign against a fellow Democrat.
Do these tactics leave you with major doubts, some doubts or no real doubts about whether you would like Senator Clinton to be the nominee for your party?

Core Democrat; Thanks for the reference to Obama's remarks earlier today. He read entirely from the text. He seemed tired, listless, unengaged.
He should have just issued a press release or called it in for all the inflection in his voice.
Has Obama lost interest in this campaign already? It seems he's not up to the task. At the first setback, he folds.
Actually, what do we know about his work ethic?

Oh so I suppose the negativity displayed by Michelle OBama herself when she said last summer about Hillary Clinton, "if she can't run her own house........... - isn't perceived as being below the belt - It's not just negative, it's offensive.
I wrote off the both Obama's when I heard that sleazy, unclassy remark.
Now, I've written off the DNC who's shown that they can't rein in the character attacks leveled against Hillary Clinton and Bill Clinton. Remember him? - the only democrat re-elected to a full 8 year term in almost 50 years.

Listen to yourselves. There is not one substantive argument in this thread. No one is arguing about who actually has solutions to the problems this country faces. You're all using campaign buzzwords to argue the better candidate.
You are as bad as the candidates, obfuscation is rule number one in popular politics.
The truth is that it doesn't matter which one gets the nomination. The election that matters this fall is not the presidential election, it's the congressional elections that no one is paying any attention to.
Good luck to you all when the Republicans retake control of the Congress, then Obama/Hilary won't have anything to do but refill the veto pen.
As an independent all of this partisan bickering (especially between people who are supposed to be on the same side) sickens me. We have never needed solidarity more than now and this bickering is giving the Republicans the opportunity they need to get back in the race, and they're doing it if you haven't noticed.
We need a third party more than ever, one for all the people who are sick and tired of the political rhetoric and are interested in actually finding solutions to problems, not just taglines for them.

Hillary Clinton lied about statistics she said came from ABC. She's a liar. It comes too easily. It’s got to be carefully taught…
A Hillary ad blames Bush for loss of jobs in Indiana.
She shoulda blamed Bill Clinton.
Ads: Bill okayed China sale of Indiana factory - Newsday
“Magnequench moved its equipment to China in 2003. But the sale of the company to a Chinese consortium was approved in 1995, during the Bill Clinton administration. In 1988, Congress gave the president authority to block foreign acquisitions that could threaten national security.”
Fear overwhelming the Democratic party - National Post
“If the past few primaries have proved anything, it’s that Democrats are the Nervous Nellies of U.S. politics. They are afraid Americans won’t elect a black man….The Democrats are afraid this latent racism is endemic in “battleground states.”
NY Senator Clinton “didn’t know anything” about Pres. Clinton’s clemency for two convicts fought by widows of two dead NY police officers - Ayers

Senator Obama and his election slime machine is a disgrace to America and has hurt the Democratic Party beyond repair. His life and record are filled with lies and distortions. Says he can fix the economy yet when you look at his own district it is one of the most improvish and crime ridden areas in the country. He should fix that first before even thinking of all 50 states' problems. He just wants the POWER but will not fix anything. HE IS ALL TALK--TALK--TALK.

My apologies if this isn't the case but nothing surprises me at this point.

Okay, I have to question the basic premise here. I listened to the audio and never heard the pollster identify himself as calling on behalf of the Clinton campaign. And even if he had, I would still question that as being true.
I've been called by pollsters several times. They NEVER identify the campaign, business, whatever they're calling for. NEVER.
So why would it be assumed or taken as fact that these calls were made on behalf of Clinton?

If he is the nominee, it will hand the Presidency and every Democratic seat coming open to the Republicans. He cannot carry one state that is needed to win a GE and after Wright and the Republicans are done with him, he won't carry many states period. Clinton has had her baggage out there a very long time. Noone cares now. And two things in her favor 1) She has the experience to solve problems 2) She is not looked at as Anti-American. And that truly counts to the majority of Americans!

Rising oil and gas prices is a world phenomenon. Apparently Obozo's knowledge of economics is severely limited.

Core...I think Hillary vote "yes" on that bill also....tell the WHOLE truth.

Obama stood in front of a gasoline pump today at an Indiana gas Station and talked about gas prices. He said he would stop the tax breaks for oil companies! Yet, He voted YES for this Cheney bill! It gave BIG tax breaks to oil companies! Then he tried to explain the bill he voted on with a bunch of political jargon that had nothing to do with this. Come On Obama, You can cover yourself better than this, can't you? What a politician he is! And an unelectable one.

Hillary...I certainly do...it is better than looking at Hillary....only my personal opinion which you don't feel I have a right to voice...

Don...if the shoe fits McCain must wear it.If McCain cannot take a little heat he shouldn't be in the campaign...GROW UP...
I already answered your question...I don't believe Obama has anything to do with Farakhans, Ayers or Rezkos, business or personal affairs. If they upsets you ,fine...only my opinion and I have a right to voice it. This is NOT an inquisition...

Don...yes I did hear about that ...as we say, we cannot control what other people say or do...I don't believe polls..I would think you'd know that by the recent elections. I think Obama will blow McCain out of the water. McCain has VERY little substance. He need prompting to name the "player" in the middle east..ZZeeeezzz. He is running on his military career.

more questions et al,what vision would that be the redistrubution of wealth as in the communist manifesto or is it mao's little red book? as far a progressive democrat is concerned fine ,my wife and i have always supported the democrat party both finacially and with our time ,im shure a lot of other moderate dems in key states will take your advice also.you might want to go to real clear politics and take a look at obama vs mcain matchups in key states,it isnt pretty.also in case you all hadnot heard wright threw obama under the bus in his interview with bill moyers.

Hillaryclintonrocks....the negative talk has nothing to do with her wins, per say. I give her credit. It is more for the WAY she did it....She has the Clinton machine behind her and knows a lot if influential( if not "seedy") people who are more than ready to "throw crap" to get her in.

linda do you really think that those of us who are moderate dems will campaign or support a candidate that since adolesance has associated with marxist anti american people.yea right and it snows here in phoenix ,have any of you really looked at who his uncle frank that he talks about in his book is?thats frank davis communist party usa and black liberationist, also his father was a african communist who lost his job in kenya due to his views.so if you put all of thease associates together, incl wright ,ayers ,kalhid and in his words the marxist professors he sought out in collage it paints a picture of someone that should not be allowed anywhere near the white house.if you disagree with me rather than call me names please tell me why i should take a chance and ignore the evidence.

"The Clinton" is not just slime, it is morphing slime that will transform and endlessly adapt itself as needed in order to re-infest the People's House. Barak wants to fumigate that House. I want to let him.
