Bill Clinton Claims Obama Camp Played the Race Card Against Him

April 22, 2008 7:58 AM

In his inimitable fashion, former President Bill Clinton told Philadelphia's WHYY radio that his South Carolina-primary comparison of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, to Rev. Jesse Jackson is an example of HIS being the victim of ugly racial politics.

Listen to the interview HERE.

“I think that they played the race card on me," Clinton said. "We now know, from memos from the campaign that they planned to do it along."

It's unclear what "memos" he was referring to.

Clinton had been asked by WHYY’s Susan Phillips about a local official who switched her support to Obama after Clinton’s "Jesse Jackson" comments, which she saw as his marginalizing Obama as “the black candidate.”

The microphone also picked up Clinton saying to someone with him, after the interview, “I don’t think I should take any s--- from anybody on that, do you?

Plenty of African-American officials, including Rep. James Clyburn, D-SC, the House Majority Whip, assuredly disagree with Clinton's interpretation of that controversy. Clyburn told me a few weeks ago that African-Americans, especially those from the South, "know the code words when we hear them."

UPDATE: Obama and Clinton elaborated on this interview today, which you can read about HERE.

It's old-time politics of the worst sort to resort to trumping up some perceived slur or slight to galvanize an ethnic group or race. I still remember in 1992 when Bill Clinton was asked by Rolling Stone Magazine what issue he "would go to the wall for". And Clinton responded "civil rights and racial equality". I'm always suspicious when candidates like Obama come along and try to rewrite history to their own liking!! The Clinton Administration was obviously far, far superior to the disastrous Bush years, contrary to what Obama may say. And Bill Clinton has been one of the champions of social justice and racial equality, contrary to what Obama says.

Is any one surprised Obama has been playing the race card since day 1, when some used his middle name and they called the guy a racist!!

Just because Obama sends out his goon squad does not mean it is not coming from him!

But for Clinton or any lib to complain is Hypocrisy because all the libs know how to do is play one group against another.

They are against corporations who employ millions, but yet nothing against Hollywood actors who make millions and do not employ anyone!!

And to finish that off for you...

His first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and co-sponsored another 427. These inculded **the Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 - became law, **The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act, - became law, **The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act, passed the Senate, **The 2007 Government Ethics Bill, - became law, **The Protection Against Excessive Executive Compensation Bill, In committee, and many more.
In all, since entering the U.S. Senate, Senator Obama has written 890 bills and co-sponsored another 1096.

An impressive record, for someone who supposedly has no record according to some who would prefer that this comparison not be made public.

Vanessa,

Jesse Jackson won South Carolina and went on to lose the nomination. Bill Clinton attempted to marginalize Obama's victory accordingly. The people to follow won South Carolina and were on the ticket, so he could not use them to marginalize Obama's victory. That's what politicians do, attempt to spin the other's victory as not significant.

The Obama campaign spun it as racial. Shame, shame, shame.

Does this make Obama a rascist? I don't think so, it makes him a lousy spin artist. It doesn't change the fact that he is elitist, though.

Obama, the elitist, lest we forget!

Surely this is a joke....Bill Clinton complaining......I thought the Clinton campaign was against this

Posted by: Anna | Apr 22, 2008 9:46:15 AM

Oh no, Obama would never do that. yeah right. Bill Clinton is right though. Obama uses his campaign advisers and sychophants in the media to do his dirty work for him.

The Clintons are the two most despicable people I know of.

233 regarding healthcare reform,
125 on poverty and public assistance,
112 crime fighting bills,
97 economic bills,
60 human rights and anti-discrimination bills,
21 ethics reform bills,
15 gun control,
6 veterans affairs and many others.

It's not that Bill Clinton is a racist...

It's that Bill Clinton used racism to get his wife ahead.

He knew exactly what he was doing...

He knew that the signs were in NH and Iowa that even with all their political might and strings and system they built... people were voting for obama after they got the ability to cut through all the political engineering.

He also knew a lot of people backed them on many things (hello library...hello entire DNC system jumping on the Clinton camp)expecting they were going to be the shoe in...and if they don't win...careers will be lost and heads are going to roll...

because there is a new sheriff in town...and they all backed the sheriff that has been fallen into the pitfalls of power for too long.

He knew that Obama was not being painted as the "black canduidate" and for his wife to win...he needed that issue to be reintroduced...because when he said the things he did...no one was talking about this.

...and for most of the independents this has now been put on the level with or unfortunately overtaken the issues of the war and the economy...

and every time those become the issue again...he brings this up.

Bill Clinton is old school slimey politics...for all the good he may have done... they are like the team that cheats when the game gets close and no ones looking...and then they win.

Let's play with a different team.

What I don't understand is how Obama is black coming from the womb of a white woman? Thus how can it be assumed he is doing something which is anti-white?

Posted by: patrik | Apr 22, 2008 9:38:00 AM

What has Obama done to the Black community other than built himself a $1.5M mansion and get his pastor a $1.6M mansion?

Can some Obama supporters name some of his contributions to the Black community?

Clinton has done a lot of Black compared to Obama.

Hell, Obama admitted as much in the Nevada debate, geez, did everyone forget. They circulated memos playing up the LBJ/MLK comparison Hillary made that was 100% historically accurate. That's when it all started. Then they fanned the flames, along with the media. And the masses followed. Bill is right.. 100% correct.

Here is how Obama was playing a race card in 2004:

Calling Obama a racist is like calling Bill Clinton the Pope.

It's just an "outta-this-world" ignorant comment with no substance!

I would have never guessed how many ignorant souls we have in this country; that is until I learned of this newly recognized fact during this political process.

We need to get back to emphasizing "education" in this country so that the upcoming generations will not sound so IGNANT!

p.s. - you know I know it's ignorant!

If I were Bill Clinton and I was asked a question on this issue I would fire back too. Bill Clinton had overwhelming support from the black community for a reason- the most minority appointments, and the most success at helping minorities raise incomes, find new jobs and opportunities, most vigorous enforcement of civil rights laws and greatest outreach to Africa. To try to construe that Bill Clinton is racist is patently absurd. McCain voted against the MLK holiday for gosh sake! Obama's beef with Bill was all about galvanizing the black community AND HE KNOWS IT!

Watching the Democrats implode this election cycle has been nothing short of hilarious. Gw Bush handed the Democrats the Presidency on a silver platter and look what a mess they made of it.

President John McCain is probably laughing too.

"If I cannot vote for Ms. Clinton, I cannot slap the faces of our country's founding father, and vote for Obama for a racist zealot."

Yeah, it would be a slap to the founding fathers since they had slaves.......you feel it is necessary to continue that proud tradition do you?

BKMC -

You couldn't be more further from the truth. You should read what the White House website says about the Clinton Administration.

The fact that he appointed and promoted more minorities to judiciaries and top positions within his cabinet is written there.

To not recognize that is an insult to people like Madeleine Albright, Donna Shalala, Alexis Herman, and Ron Brown. As for his judiciary appointments:

TOTAL CLINTON ADMINISTRATION APPOINTMENTS
Supreme Court 2
Circuit Court of Appeals 65
Trade Court 5
District Court, Art. III 305
District Court, Art. I 2
Court of Claims 7
Total 386

African-American 63 16%
Asian 5 1%
Hispanic 26 7%
Native American 1 0%
Women 115 30%
With Disabilities 5 1%

More more than half (55%) of his judiciary appointments went to minorities, more than ANY other president; past or present.

And, when the Republicans threatened to repeal civil rights legislations, Clinton and his Administration stood up and told them not to try it - that he would veto any such. Get your facts correct about the Clintons. They did more to foster minority than any other.

Why compare Obama to Jesse Jackson???

Why not a white candidate whom also won a SC primary???

Why Jesse Jackson???

He choose Jesse Jackson because he too was a black candidate who recieved majority of the AA vote

and THAT triggered AA and Hillary lost their votes from there

Bill Clinton basicaly stated, the reasons behind Obama's win were his AA roots
