Charlton Heston: A Tribute in Youtube Clips

April 06, 2008 12:02 PM

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., today issued a statement about the death of actor Charlton Heston.

"In taking on epic and commanding roles, he showed himself to be one of our nation's most gifted actors, and his legacy will forever be a part of our cinema," McCain said. "Off-the-screen, Charlton Heston was also a real-life leader. He served his country and proudly gave his voice in support of some of our most basic rights. He was devoted to the cause of freedom for all Americans from the battle for civil rights in the 1960s to protecting Second Amendment rights in the 1990s. At this time of grief, let us honor a life that has truly touched millions."

**

Heston was "I am Legend' before Will Smith, as "The Omega Man."

He was Judah Ben-Hur.

He was Moses -- he parted the Red Sea!

"Fear not," he said. "Stand still and see the salvation of the Lord."

He told us that soylent green is people.

He yelled at a "damn dirty ape" to take his "stinking paws" off him. And later, he wept on the beach for what humans did to the planet.

Active in the civil rights movement in the early 1960s, he became active in the gun rights movement in the 1980s, explaining his position in a speech to the NRA in 1989.

He later proclaimed that the government could only get his gun if they took it from his cold dead hands.

For that, he was mocked by Michael Moore and George Clooney.

What did you think of him?

Charlton Heston spoke his mind - on screen and off. His courage, devotion to his country and family, were outstanding qualities. Heston was agreat man who played great men on the screen.

Without a doubt he is the type of person this country desperately needs in its leaders. Unflinching in his support and defense of the founding principals which made this country so great. Never buying into the temptations and short sightedness of socialism or populist politics. And most important for a leader, he helped the rest of us to do the same. God rest his soul but keep his spirit alive in those of us strong enough to follow in his political footsteps.

Heston trumped all the others of his time with charm and grace. he respected life and was committed to his beliefs. How could you ask for more. Today it seems valor and commitment are mocked as stiff. I think it took guts in this environment to stick to his beliefs; and for that I applaud and will miss him. He was a great actor and a great man.
P.S. and I don't even like guns!

I was and still am a very big fan of him. I would rather watch his movies than anything on the screen now. I have seen all his movies many times. I was able to go to the premier of Ben Hur. I was very young, but I was thrilled. I still remenber the thrill when I see it now. He was a REAL movie star, a great AMERICAN, and a great human being. We will miss you. God Bless

Unique, confident, and powerful man of character. That's why he could play the parts he did with such character. You can't exude what you don't have. And he had what it took. Quite an example to us all of dedication plus conviction on and off the screen. Wish a man like him could be our next President, but men like that are getting harder to find nowadays. God help us.

What a Truly extraordinary man, exceptional to the core, Truly a man for all seasons. The world is better because of Charlton and he carried it with dignity and decency. Hollywood is lost and empty without great actors, like him. Thank you Charlton for influencing my childhood and for turning to you to learn how to be a better man. We love you dearly may The Good Lord keep you now and hold you forever, a life well done and lasting resonance of grace and poise.

We have just lost a giant in the motion
picture industry and a true patriot of
the USA.

If those in Hollywood today had one tenth of his character and integrity
and talents they might be worth something.

Rest in peace Charlton Heston and sympathy to his wife and family.

A great actor has gone and the youth of today will never know what a really good actor is. Also most of the movies he was in were great too. Its a sad time for the young of today to watch the GARBAGE they call movies today. Also the actors and actresses in Hollywood cannot even tie the shoes of Mr. Heston. They are a really sorry lot.

Heston took on tough roles, roles that would not be available in todays junk movies. He was married over 60 years and was tranparent in his beliefs. you knew who he was and what he stood for.
It's called "Character". He had a moral compass that pointed due North unlike Hollywood today their compass is wihtout morality and points South

We lost a Great Man in C. Heston who stood against the liberal biais in Hollywood where now they make the sickest and most anti-american films.

As far a Moore well he is a waist of air to speak. And Clooney well he is a waste of an actor and should keep his mouth shut on politics and stop with his phoney BS.

I think it is too bad that these liberal actors/actresses think that anyone with an opinion different than theirs is evil. It is sad to hear when a good person like Charlton passes away. I believe he led a good and meaningful life. My thoughts and prayers to his family.

George Clooney is your typical liberal
who opens his mouth and stupied comes out.The comment he made about Heston
would be like me saying when he and his
girlfriend were in the motorcycle accident he deserved it because he is a liberal hollywood actor. he thinks it
is an honor because he is an ambassador
for the UN.

To me he was always ( believable )...
It's like if you actually met Moses or Ben Hur...thats excactly how they would look and talk
Very few actors today or in the past can be the person they are playing

I respected his views and think we lost another great actor.
I too lost a mother to alzheimers and it is a horrible way to die.
My heart goes out to his family and the world. A great man and a true icon.

JennyC, your comment is perfect, I can't add much except to say that in every Charlton Heston film I have seen, the characters he has played have been unforgettable, even if the movies themselves were not so great. My personal favorite is unavailable and not considered one of his best, but it made such an impression on me that his role in it (Secret of the Incas) still personifies the dashing, devil-may-care adventurer. May the gods bless him and place him in a really good place. He's earned it.

My favorite Charlton Heston movie was the Greatest Show on Earth. He was great in that movie. It was filled with all the stars of that time in 1959.

A Good Guy

His Judah Ben-Hur is unforgettable and the movie itself ranks with the classic tragedies among the great fictions of western civilization.

Heston the man was quite terrible.

I grew up watching his movies. He was always larger than life on screen for me. Ben Hur still ranks as one of my all time favorites, with Touch of Evil, The Big Country and Ten Commandments not far behind. His loss, along with Richard Widmark's not even a few weeks ago, reminds us all of the Golden Age of Hollywood and how good movies could be.

My respects to his family and friends.

He will probably not be seen as a Hollywood saint, like Gregory Peck, because of some of his personal views, but that doesn't change the fact that he is a legend in cinematic history. I hope his family is at peace now after the long struggle with his Alzheimer's.

Posted by: Simone | Apr 6, 2008 2:29:50 PM

I hear that he wanted to be buried with his favorite shotgun, but that someone pried his gun out of his cold, dead hands...

Posted by: Mark Kraft | Apr 6, 2008 2:07:32 PM

I was not a big fan of his movies or his politics. But I feel for him and his family. My grandmother, aunt and father died of Alzheimer's and it as an awful way to go. He has probably been brain dead last few years. As we get older we worry to much about how we will look. We need to worry more about our minds. He is finally at peace.

Posted by: Tina D | Apr 6, 2008 1:49:26 PM

I wonder if he was holding his gun when he died, and if they had to pry it out of his cold, dead hands? (This was a favorite expression of his, in case any reader might think I'm being disrespectful). Charlton Heston was one committed character. I didn't always agree with his politics, but you have to give it to him on toughness and consistency. May he rest in peace.

Unequivocally the best cinematic actor in history. His presence in films is strong, memorable, and majestic.
