Clinton Camp Responds to NC GOP Ad (Finally!)

April 25, 2008 4:00 PM

It took hours for the campaign of Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, to weigh in on the North Carolina Republican Party TV ad that calls Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, "radical" and purports to attempt to harm two Democratic Tarheel State gubernatorial candidates -- Bev Perdue and Richard Moore -- by tying them to Rev. Jeremiah Wright via Obama.

The Clinton camp was in an odd spot, after all. This ad is Exhibit A in her case to superdelegates against Obama, that he will be the victims of such smears, some of them racial. So they wouldn't necessarily want to shut it down.

On the other hand, how could they not comment on an ad so many Democratic voters find offensive? Especially after the RNC and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., decried the ad?  (Not to mention the two North Carolina TV stations announcing they would not broadcast it.)

So finally, from spokesman Jay Carson, comes the response to the ad against Purdue and Moore, that seeks to more pointedly hurt Obama.

"Even though they (Perdue and Moore) are supporting Senator Obama they are good Democrats, and this ad is wrong," Carson says, in a statement sent to ABC News' Eloise Harper. "It's exactly the kind of ad Republicans run every cycle to distract us from their failures and the real issues that face our country."

That's curiously worded.

"Even though" they're supporting Obama they're good Democrats? What does that mean?

Have things gotten so bitter between the two camps, do they view each other's supporters so warily, that the Clinton campaign's collective mind doubts whether Obama's supporters are good Democrats?

Insiders said Hillary's campaign approached the North Carolina's GOP, Linda Daves, to create and run the anti-obama commercial.

The pattern works, negative campaigns manipulates poor-whites to vote for Hillary.

Is it me or does it seem......Sen. Obama is being hammered from all sides. Sen. McCain on the right and Sen. Clinton on the left. Funny thing though - McCain and Clinton rarely say anything negative about each other. Could it be because they are more alike then different??

Think about it!

obama attacks hillary viciously then complains if hillary doesn't defend him well enough? what a jerk!!!

Hillary 2012!!! Why wait 4 years when she can just start now?

Posted by: Jane | Apr 27, 2008 5:38:15 AM

This is not a Clinton's fight to wage.

I can guarantee you that, Obama will not do anything either if the Republicans go after Hillary as they have done for the past 15 months of the campaign or the past 16 years.

Besides, Obama has all the millions of dollars in his warchest. He ought to be able to run his own ad in NC. Look, he spent over $11m in ads for PA primary.
Better yet, why doesn't the MSM come to his aid as they have always done?

Why are we all arguing about HRC or BO and the election - neither nominee will win because we are a party of idiots and the Republicans are enjoying this.

To the person who said all McCain needs is 10% of the Hillary crowd who won't vote Obama, but then on the flip side without the black votes HRC cannot win throw in some of the youth vote... what does that mean - MCCAIN 2008. While democrats vote personality the Republicans are voting party!

Dear Senator Clinton,

What good is victory in battle against a candidate who shares your views, when you bloody yourself so badly that you cannot win the war against one who doesn't? This isn't refreshing, or exciting or exhilirating. It's just garbage, and will have long term negative effects.

I am not a military expert, but anyone can tell you that it's a pyrrhic victory.

Posted by: Ann | Apr 26, 2008 6:04:47 PM

This ad was sponsored by the Clinton campaign. That was exactly how they planned the deal, the Republican should air it for sometime before they will respond as if they were against it. American watch Clinton will back out at long last but she wants to undo Obama and she has forgotten that if Obama losses cos of Clinton she won't find it easy in four years time too.

"Even though they (Perdue and Moore) are supporting Senator Obama they are good Democrats

So if you don't vote for Hillary you are a 'bad' democrat. Talk about elitist.

erin, inspiration won't solve the problems facing us: the economy, oil crisis, climate change, finding alternative fuels, Iraq, Afghanistan, health care, social security, illegal immigration, job growth.

Hillary is a hard worker while Obama is a slacker who talks "hope and change" but has absolutely nothing in his background to show that his words can achieve anything. In fact, his background proves that he isn't one to roll up his sleeves, buckle down, and get to work. Check out his Illinois and U.S. Senate years and read what his co-workers have to say about him. He's been building a resume (slim as it is) but hasn't built a solid foundation.

He says he's going to unite the country and change government, yet he continually plays the race card, insults those who don't vote for him, and antagonizes not only Republicans but fellow Democrats as well.

I'm glad he inspires so many people. Unfortunately that inspiration isn't worth 2 cents in the real world of the average American.

Former Clinton Supporter:

Your diatribe was one of the most untruthful, unfair and disrespectful posts that I've read. You clearly don't know the facts or appreciate the good that both Bill and Hillary Clinton have done for this country and what Hillary wants to do as President. Is she flawless? Of course not. But she has the strength, intelligence, experience and compassion to lead our country.

Posted by: cappamore | Apr 26, 2008 12:18:55 PM

I'm an african american and I am disgusted when I read these simple minded, un-educated posts from my own race. The truth is that Obama doesn't have a record of anything that would suggest he's qualified. He didn't even campaign in his own state. He was appointed to replace someone that was dismissed. Are we really so ignorant that we would put the entire country in the hands of someone that has based his campaign not on proven hope and change but simply the words of Hope & Change?? I thought we as african americans would atleast compare the candidates experience & accomplishments that define" most qualified". Just a reminder, nearly all my brothers and sisters in this country were rightfully in love with the Clintons before Barack came along. They really did many great things for our people. If we were all educated AND ACTUALLY ENGAGED OR ACTIVE IN OUR COUNTRY AND OUR GOVERNMENT LIKE WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN RATHER THAN ONLY GIVING A DAMN BECAUSE WE HAVE BLACK CANDIDATE WITH NO RECORD IS FRANKLY, HUMILIATING TO ME AND OTHER INTELLIGENT BLACK CITIZENS Now suddenly they are garbage??? Are you serious?? What a pathetic logic and sad image that we shouldn't be proud of and definitely could live without. If a "proven",more-qualified, experienced, & accomplished, African American were running he'd definite have my vote!!! One last point about lack of intelligence: Barack is well educated.....BUT, being educated is not the same thing as being qualified. I'm not sure all of us Black people got the memo. I have a huge family with lots of children, nieces, nephews, cousins all over the US and several of them dont have Health Care and cant afford it.......... I think its more important, to support a candidate, that has proven he/she can offer and DELIVER SOLUTIONS. MY FAMILY IS MORE IMPORTANT AND IMPROVING THEIR FUTURES IS MY DUTY TO RESPONSIBLY LOOK OUT FOR........ FAR MORE VALUABLE THAN SOME DIVISIVE, IRRATIONAL CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT THAT UNDERMINDS UNITY MORE THAN ENDING RACIAL DIVIDES. So does this mean I'm not "BLACK ENOUGH"??? I'M SURE THATS WHAT PEOPLE WILL WANNA SAY..... BUT HERE'S SOMETHING THE CRITICS SHOULD THINK ABOUT....."MAYBE YOU AREN'T BLACK ENOUGH" TO RISE ABOVE THESE SHALLOW, WRECKLESS DECISIONS ABOUT THE WELL-BEING OF OUR FAMILIES, EDUCATION, HEALTHCARE, THE ECONOMY, AND THIS COUNTRY WE ALL OCCUPY TOGETHER. THE PROGRESS OF UNIFYING US ALL HAS BEEN A STRUGGLE, AND FULL OF IN-EQUALITIES AND INJUSTICES FOR US BLACK PEOPLE, I DONT DISPUTE THAT, TRUST ME....BUT WE ARE CLEARLY TAKING STEPS BACKWARDS BY STANDING BY A PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE NOT BY HIS GREAT QUALITIES AND EXPERIENCES THAT HAVE MADE HIM THE BEST FOR THE JOBD OR HIS REPUTABLE ASSOCIATIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS (OR LACK OF), BUT BASED SOLEY ON HIS BLACKNESS??? IS THIS WHAT SATISFIES OUR REDEMPTION FOR OUR HARD TIMES AND SLAVER PAST AMERICA??? MAKING SERIOUS ADULT DECISIONS SUCH AS OUR PRESIDENT IRRESPONSIBLY & DESTRUCTIVELY RATHER THAN INTELLIGENTLY & CONSTRUCTIVELY TARNISHES OUR CREDIBILITY. IT'S CALLED SELF-INFLICTED MISERY. I'LL BE PRAYING FOR US ALL.

The comment from Hillary's camp sends the Clinton's strong arm political message. You are either with them or against them...no one can have a differing opinion without being a mortal enemy.

Think about it America. Do you remember Hillary's meeting with Richard Mellon Scaife? The very man who worked to bring Bill Clinton down is now suddenly is supportive of Hillary. I doubt it. He was engaged by Hillary for her 2012 campaign.

It is so obvious. The Clintons knew then they could not win. A deal was made to hand over Obama on a platter or at least make the Democratic party totally disfunctional. Extreme triangulation by the Clinton camp to ensure a victory for her in 2012.

What is now crystal clear is Hillary is a fighter and Obama is not, just as Carter, Dukakis, Gore, and Kerry were not fighters. Look at Obama's pathetic showing in the last debate and his refusal to debate Hillary again. I sense that Obama supporters would not mind if he lost, just as long as he lost the right way. I think his supporters would love a martyr, another MLK.

The Democrats do not need martyrs, we have enough of them. They need a fighter who can beat McCain to a pulp in the fall, and then fight for this country's interests.

What really worries me is, if by some miracle Obama becomes president, he will refuse to fight for the interests of the United States. Maybe he believes what Rev. Wright believes, that this country is wrong and has treated other countries badly. Maybe Obama will refuse to aggressively pursue our interests because that would be seen as being unfair to other countries. That does not work for me. Maybe Bush is too brutal, grabbing the world by the throat, but some amount of aggression is required to compete in this world. There are plenty of countries out there willing to wring our collective necks if they can.

Democrats need a fighter. As Al Davis of the old Oakland Raiders said, "Just win, baby!" Obama refuses to fight for himself, and I worry that he will not fight for this country.

We need Hillary. She may be rough and she may be tough, but that's good enough for me.

The Obama team as promised is publically painting Clinton (they have been trying this from the beginning with a very willing media) with the affair of her husband,,,I wonder why the media has never taken Lewinsky off the table while they insist that Obama's minister is not an issue.

The question about Wright and Obama remains judgement...he was there for 20 years and he heard nothing that Wright preached or taught....we do not know what he truly believes. Wake up America. Every question or attack on Obama is not racists...this is ridiculous.

The Obama strategy will be to equate Wright with Bill Clinton....because it didn't work to equate his "typical white person" grandmother with Wright.

This is all politics as usual not the politics of hope...turns out that was only one stump speech.

Former Clinton supporter
Do you want a president who will assist YOU in having a better quality of life.
that is what voters will get when they cast a vote for sen. clinton.
she didn't get the healthcare plan the last time. but I can assure you we will get universal healthcare for all this time around. the student loan mess WILL be taken care of and she will make college more affordable for everyone that wants to go to college. the housing issues will be taken care of with her plan. YOU can keep harping on that mess if you want to. as if you really know anything more about vince foster-all of that personal stuff of the candidates-will not change a thing for any of us. If sen.clinton DID have an affair with vince foster-What real difference does that make to YOU?
I guess what you want to happen now is sen. clinton to stop running for president-call a press conf. and say I killed vince foster-and I guess you want to see her carried off to prison in handcuffs? is that correct?
and you want her to spend the rest of her life in prison-because you want justice to be served
Let me ask you a question if you hate the sen. clinton so much-have you thought about the fact that instead of her being in the white house trying to help you. you want her in prison so you can take care of her. Who do you think pays for people to be in prison.
all of the stuff you just wrote has NOTHING to do with what she will be able to do for the american people
and if you are suggesting the thing that clyburn said about black people bellying up-the clintons have tried to do more for black people to level the playing field just because it was the right thing to do. Obama came on the scene and the little help he has offered to black people has all been for political positioning-even down to going to rev. wrights church.
I know they do not want to hear this
but black people, the working poor, and middle classed people would be better served by staying with the clintons than going with this unknown.
for black people-stay with the person
who has asked "Black people what can I do to help you?"
rather than the black man-who is saying
black people can you help me?
and in actual fact obama has not gone to the black community-obama from the very start never wanted to be associated with the black voters.
no the black voters rather than checking him out-they went running to support him-right for them or wrong for them
and in this case it is similar to the oj thing
and I am black-but I think oj did it
black people went flocking to oj and oj had not been around or helped the black communtiy for years
the only association obama wants to have with black people is for them to see his face is brown-he has not lived the black american experience.
black people vote you economic interest
vote for sen. clinton.

I would like to strongly encourage the NC voters to really (they have the time)
look at the plans of Sen. Clinton and obama-Sen. Clinton has the best plan to help the middle and working class people
now NC and INDiana if you are independently wealthy you don't have to worry so much about who is in office.
but the middle-class and working people of NC and indiana-should look at what the candidates will do for them.
For poor, working class and middle class people to be talking about the Clintons are not good for the country is just plain crazy. Look at what YOU will get with her healthcare plan.
Look at what YOU will get if you have a student getting ready to go to college.
If you have been paying attention to the issues-you will see obama only copies sen. clinton. I do not believe obama has the will to try to do the things he is saying he will do.
The media, the DNC, and the obama handlers have tried to sweet talk obama into office. Sen. Clinton has had the deck stacked way-high against her-and still she continues. the media say she is tearing apart the dem. party-because ehey want this inexperienced guy in office.
But the cosmos has given us time.for the people who really care-we have been given time to see obama, and learn of him, and decide for ourselves. and many are beginning to see he is not ready to be president.
thank goodness the cosmos is bigger that the american corp. media. If you do not like sen. clinton because of what you think you know about her personal life.
the voting you will do is for your own sake and a vote for you to have better quality of life.
so just Hold your nose and vote for her
just hold your nose and vote for her
your wallet will thank you
Sen. Clinton will be POTUS 08

It is time that one of the political pundits has the courage to call Hillary Clinton on her shameful, disgraceful conduct. She is a traitor who has embraced Richard Scaife and Ruport Murdoch- two individuals who tried to send Bill Clinton to prison. She has turned against supporters. The main people she now denigrates supported the Clintons amidst the rumors that she had had an affair with Vince Foster and those that said she murdered Vince Foster. They supported the Clintons during the Whitewater investigation, the Monica Lewinski scandal and impeachment proceedings. They even overlooked the Clintons betrayal of Al Gore and John Kerry. Hillary Clinton has demonstrated that a hooker's heart never changes. She is cold, calculating and mean. Like a prostitute, she will sleep with anyone for money, and in her case, power.

Posted by: Former Clinton Supporter | Apr 26, 2008 7:27:06 AM

cindy in nc, And the country and NC deserve better than the Clintons. So, I guess McCain should be elected, right? I say again the Democratic party is self-destructing.

Posted by: indy_voter | Apr 26, 2008 6:38:27 AM

I think your jump from the alluded subject of the commercial to his supporters was misinformed or mislead.

Obviously, the Clinton Camp feels strongly about their Democratic Principles and agenda as well as the contending candidate as a candidate.

The main point is that although Obama is someone that they differ with, they are vigilant and proactive against the opportunity for the NeoCon party to do some significant damage to the substance of the plurality of the representation of the majority.
