Clinton on Working-Class Southerners, circa 1995: "Screw 'em"

April 16, 2008 5:44 PM

Some readers have noted the fact that The Huffington Post is going all to town about an anecdote I reported back in October -- from Sally Bedell Smith's book "For Love of Politics: Bill and Hillary Clinton: The White House Years" -- that Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, during a 1995 retreat called the "Camp David Seminar on the Future of Democracy had some interesting comments about working-class white Southerners who had left the Democratic party:

"'Screw 'em,' she said, 'you don't owe them a thing, Bill, they're doing nothing for you.' Bill rose to their defense, 'as if rehearsing an old but honorable debate he had been having with his wife for decades,'" as one attendee recalled.

"'I know these boys,' Bill said. 'I grew up with them. Hardworking poor white boys who feel left out.' He pointed out that liberal reforms had often 'come at their expense' and that the Democrats had to 'find a way to include these boys in our programs.' Hillary had no rejoinder, but during cocktails after the seminar she stood apart, 'opaque and unsmiling.'"

The comment obviously takes on added meaning in light of the controversy over recent remarks by Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, about small-town Pennsylvanians and Sen. Hillary Rodham Mellencamp's new posturing on the subject.

of course it matters patrick! (and i am sure it would really matter alot if it were hillary. when politicians take office they step down from organizations board's, as ceo, etc.. so as not to have a conflict of interest. they also put stock and other finances in a blind trust to avoid conflicts.
It would follow that dual citizenship may just be frowned upon when one becomes president, both for conflicts of interest in decision making, and in where alligiances lie. the "annointed one's" followers may be as short on patriatism as he is and may not appreciate the nuances of a true patriot.

ABC's deliberate distortion is loathsome and extremely irresponsible.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
No, no, this is actually a good thing. Hillary said if we don't point these things out now then John McCain certainly will. So it is something that needs to be discussed. Hillary said so!
do folks realize bho has dual citizenship with Kenya?
Oh my God!!! First he shuns the American flag pin and now this??? What is going on here??? Doesn't anyone check these guys out first?? This proves he is not a real American. I knew there was something fishy about Obama. I am going to send you two flag pins--one for each lapel. Because you ARE a Super American for ferreting out this valuable information before its too late. And we just can't get enough Super Americans these days.
'Screw 'em' she said, 'you don't owe 'em a thing, Bill ...'
This is a distortion at best and probably an outright lie. Hillary Clinton never called Bill Clinton, 'Bill' when I knew them years ago. She always called him by the name that his friends use, 'Bubba' not 'Bill'. If she said it at all, she was acting as a foil for a point Bubba wanted to make, which seems clear from the context. ABC's deliberate distortion is loathsome and extremely irresponsible.
RIDICULOUS. The media has to equalize Obama's remarks, so they rumage through the most undependable of sources to bring back their fair-haired front-runner.
The inner-tribal warfare of the sparring Dems is ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS to observe!! The Democratic Party (a.k.a. The Party of Slavery) has vomited up two candidates short on substance, and long on style. In their zeal to present "niche" candidates (ostensibly to appeal to a fragmented constituency), the Democratic Party has created an abomination! It's a two-headed hydra--Obama/Clinton--presently bent on decapitating one of its heads! It's excruciating to watch the suicidal/cannibalistic manner in which the Dem candidates comport themselves. Obama and Clinton are like involuntarily conjoined twins, forced to duke it out at some Orwellian "ultimate fighting" forum (the Democratic National Convention), where the last one standing wins the nomination! Unfortunately, the "loser" is left hemorrhaging and flatlining on the sidelines, still attached to its victorious twin; only to be resuscitated long enough to endorse the winner! Because the very foundation on which their philosophy is constructed is fatally flawed, the Democratic Party is disintegrating before our eyes! What a fascinating time to be alive!
We need to learn a lot more about Senator Obama. We need to learn what his real agenda is if he is elected to the White House. We need to learn more about his past. The people you have around you growing up is who you learn from. This is very important part of who each of us are- even Senator Obaman. 20 years of listening to his Pastor & Senator Obama did not ever hear his Pastors' outrageous remarks on various subjects. We as Americans need to be careful on what we base our opinons on. We all know about everything about Senator Clinton- we need to the as much information about Senator Obama. He is not very forthcoming with personal information- who his friends are. Yes, he is black, grew up in a 1 parent household but not poor. Big deal how many of us grew up this way or worse? Be careful what you wish for.
Another poster already made this observation but I have to reiterate... what planet is Clinton from? In her discussion of taxes, she vowed not to raise taxes on the middle class -- which she defined as those making less than $250K per year. She must be on crack. That is NOT middle-class. Subtract about $150,000 per year. I guess when you have as much money as she does, anyone making only $250K is just making chicken-feed. I wonder if she would be surprised to know what the REST of us really live on...
Shame on ABC
HAVE YOU EVER HEARD ANY OF THE CONVERSATIONS TAPED BY ACTUAL PRESIDENTS IN THE WHITE HOUSE?..NiXON, JOHNSON FOR EXAMPLE. Their comments and use of slurs and foul language make Hillary's comment very innocent. Half of this stuff is hear say. I just want the candidates to actually answer questions. I will vote for the person that actually presents what sounds like a viable plan for the economy, healthcare and Iraq. It is ashame that McCain gets to sit back while all this mudslinging gones on and money is wasted. It's lets see who can buy the presidentcy? I would like also to see more of Mrs. Obama. Where is she along with Mrs. McCain?
These two commentators are an embarrassment to ABC news. This country is in trouble and commentators spend 50 minutes asking presidential candidates trivial questions. People are hurting economically and financially. I will not listen to ABC evening news again. Professional commentators should be responsible for debates. A teenager could have asked better questions during the first 50 minutes.
You can have a friend but not agree with their views.
ABC is taking much heat for the questions asked last night. Everybody notice the talking point about first hour being wasted on rumors/non-important info, etc? It's the same tune, fed by the top to the bottom feeders of outrage. And how dare ABC ask the questions the whole country is talking about?! How dare they? They should have only asked the exact same questions already posed in the other 22 debates. The American People deserve Platitudes, not original thought. We need BackinBarack to have one more chance of saying the same thing. Watching him actually have to think and craft his answers on the spot to tough questions was awkward for him and his supporters. They no likey. They want more hopitude and changiness! The real point to notice was how both candidates couldn't stop talking about Bush. NewsFlash, kids. He ain't running for office. Well done, George and Charlie. It was refreshing to watch candidates have to think instead of reciting their normal android responses. But I think you guys missed the memo about not making the BarackOMeter upset. He's supposed to be the next POTUS, you know.
C'mon people, this room is
acting "brand new". You ALL know that ALL politicians ARE LIARS.
David, If you mean me, I'm not bitter. I'm outraged. And I'm not alone - and it's not just Obama supporters. I think, considering that he was subject to a well planned, deliberate hatchet job he did better than anyone I can remember in American politics. I'm outraged that a network would sponsor a debate and then spend almost a full hour on complete trivia "are you wearing a flag pin", (why didn't they ask does it say "made in china" like most do?). I expected fair play - I expected substance. I expected some questions about China, about the renewed violence in the middle east, about health care (which would not have favored Obama, by the way), some real questions about the energy crisis - biofuels are not the answer and everyone knows that. What about how they would deal with the $2 Million Sunni refugees? I expected real questions about real conflicts of interest - Mark Penn in Colombia, Bill Clinton in COlombia, Bill Clinton in CHina, Bill Clinton in Dubai. I would have been happy if they had simply said: explain our position in the middle east, the violence in Basra, and the how the ceasefire was achieved. It would have told us whether the candidates actually understand how complex the situation is. I would have been happy if they asked the candidates to explain what role their spouses will play in their presidency - I don;t want a co-presidency. And if you look anywhere besides one network and one columnist, you'll find the same sentiments. Everywhere. I agree with the people who say we should go back to the League of Women Voters. They were balanced, intelligent and asked some tough questions - and they weren't about lapel pins.
I disagree with the pundits, I think the most remarkable point in the debate was when Clinton said she would "was absolutely committed to not raising a single tax on raising taxes on middle class Americans, people making less than $250,000 a year." $250,000 a year? By what estimation, on what planet, do middle class people make $250,000 a year? When was the last time this woman had an acquaintance who was not a multi-millionaire, a hedge fund manager, a lawyer, or a lobbyist? By most estimates, families making $100,000 or below as middle class. Good Lord. Talk about elitist. Bitter about Obama? Obama came out ahead in this one. Nobody likes hatchet jobs except the real lunatic fringe.
Those of you that didn't like last nights debates, blame the Senator from Illinois. For the first hour, I thought it was an Obama speach. His cut throat attacks went unanswered by Clinton whom has too much class to lower herself to the Obama level. Obama should blame himself fot the first 20 minutes of the debate since it was mostly Obama talking I guess even the Senator from Illinois gets bored about his repetitive same speach that he repeats, and repeats, and repeats, and... Is Obama the energizer bunny? Now he goes not television and all the news networks show him saying tha Clinton took numerous digs. Clinton talking with knowledge must be what the Obama supporters are against.
out of all that is going on in the world today,your questions were comical at best. Having George to question Obama was very unfair. ABC has lost 1 of its very loyal viewers. This debate was a joke. We can hardly afford to drive to work and all you guys care about are flag pins. Well flag pins don't put gas in my tank. STICK TO THE ISSUES!!!!!! ABC should know better
There goes Obama again! He says one thing while his campaign does another.
He is a shrewd politician who for some reason expects to dish it out but not take it.
Last night's debate just made it crystal clear that Hillary is the better of the two.
The Clinton campaign DENIES and LIES again about the "Screw 'em" quote.
Hillary Spokesman Phil Singer insisted that Don Baer and Bruce Reed, other participants in the Camp David 1995 meeting, have no recollection of Clinton making the comment and don’t remember this as reflecting the tone of the meeting. Singer went on to say that if you look at the way Sen. Clinton has lived her life and the policies she's pursued, it’s clear she's advocated a progressive agenda aimed at lifting all Americans up.
Benjamin Barber, a noted political scientist and author who was also at the meeting, wrote in his 2001 book that Clinton did say it. As we noted earlier, Barber confirmed to First Read that he heard her make the comment and added that he is a Clinton supporter and donor. FEC data shows Barber donated $1,000 to Clinton’s campaign on Jan. 24.
