Clinton on Working-Class Southerners, circa 1995: "Screw 'em"

April 16, 2008 5:44 PM

Some readers have noted the fact that The Huffington Post is going all to town about an anecdote I reported back in October -- from Sally Bedell Smith's book "For Love of Politics: Bill and Hillary Clinton: The White House Years" -- that Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, during a 1995 retreat called the "Camp David Seminar on the Future of Democracy had some interesting comments about working-class white Southerners who had left the Democratic party:

"'Screw 'em,' she said, 'you don't owe them a thing, Bill, they're doing nothing for you.' Bill rose to their defense, 'as if rehearsing an old but honorable debate he had been having with his wife for decades,'" as one attendee recalled.

"'I know these boys,' Bill said. 'I grew up with them. Hardworking poor white boys who feel left out.' He pointed out that liberal reforms had often 'come at their expense' and that the Democrats had to 'find a way to include these boys in our programs.' Hillary had no rejoinder, but during cocktails after the seminar she stood apart, 'opaque and unsmiling.'"

The comment obviously takes on added meaning in light of the controversy over recent remarks by Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, about small-town Pennsylvanians and Sen. Hillary Rodham Mellencamp's new posturing on the subject.

of course it matters patrick! (and i am sure it would really matter alot if it were hillary. when politicians take office they step down from organizations board's, as ceo, etc.. so as not to have a conflict of interest. they also put stock and other finances in a blind trust to avoid conflicts.
It would follow that dual citizenship may just be frowned upon when one becomes president, both for conflicts of interest in decision making, and in where alligiances lie. the "annointed one's" followers may be as short on patriatism as he is and may not appreciate the nuances of a true patriot.

ABC's deliberate distortion is loathsome and extremely irresponsible.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
No, no, this is actually a good thing. Hillary said if we don't point these things out now then John McCain certainly will. So it is something that needs to be discussed. Hillary said so!
do folks realize bho has dual citizenship with Kenya?
Oh my God!!! First he shuns the American flag pin and now this??? What is going on here??? Doesn't anyone check these guys out first?? This proves he is not a real American. I knew there was something fishy about Obama. I am going to send you two flag pins--one for each lapel. Because you ARE a Super American for ferreting out this valuable information before its too late. And we just can't get enough Super Americans these days.
'Screw 'em' she said, 'you don't owe 'em a thing, Bill ...'
This is a distortion at best and probably an outright lie. Hillary Clinton never called Bill Clinton, 'Bill' when I knew them years ago. She always called him by the name that his friends use, 'Bubba' not 'Bill'. If she said it at all, she was acting as a foil for a point Bubba wanted to make, which seems clear from the context. ABC's deliberate distortion is loathsome and extremely irresponsible.
RIDICULOUS. The media has to equalize Obama's remarks, so they rumage through the most undependable of sources to bring back their fair-haired front-runner.
The inner-tribal warfare of the sparring Dems is ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS to observe!! The Democratic Party (a.k.a. The Party of Slavery) has vomited up two candidates short on substance, and long on style. In their zeal to present "niche" candidates (ostensibly to appeal to a fragmented constituency), the Democratic Party has created an abomination! It's a two-headed hydra--Obama/Clinton--presently bent on decapitating one of its heads! It's excruciating to watch the suicidal/cannibalistic manner in which the Dem candidates comport themselves. Obama and Clinton are like involuntarily conjoined twins, forced to duke it out at some Orwellian "ultimate fighting" forum (the Democratic National Convention), where the last one standing wins the nomination! Unfortunately, the "loser" is left hemorrhaging and flatlining on the sidelines, still attached to its victorious twin; only to be resuscitated long enough to endorse the winner! Because the very foundation on which their philosophy is constructed is fatally flawed, the Democratic Party is disintegrating before our eyes! What a fascinating time to be alive!
We need to learn a lot more about Senator Obama. We need to learn what his real agenda is if he is elected to the White House. We need to learn more about his past. The people you have around you growing up is who you learn from. This is very important part of who each of us are- even Senator Obaman. 20 years of listening to his Pastor & Senator Obama did not ever hear his Pastors' outrageous remarks on various subjects. We as Americans need to be careful on what we base our opinons on. We all know about everything about Senator Clinton- we need to the as much information about Senator Obama. He is not very forthcoming with personal information- who his friends are. Yes, he is black, grew up in a 1 parent household but not poor. Big deal how many of us grew up this way or worse? Be careful what you wish for.
Another poster already made this observation but I have to reiterate... what planet is Clinton from? In her discussion of taxes, she vowed not to raise taxes on the middle class -- which she defined as those making less than $250K per year. She must be on crack. That is NOT middle-class. Subtract about $150,000 per year. I guess when you have as much money as she does, anyone making only $250K is just making chicken-feed. I wonder if she would be surprised to know what the REST of us really live on...
Shame on ABC
HAVE YOU EVER HEARD ANY OF THE CONVERSATIONS TAPED BY ACTUAL PRESIDENTS IN THE WHITE HOUSE?..NiXON, JOHNSON FOR EXAMPLE. Their comments and use of slurs and foul language make Hillary's comment very innocent. Half of this stuff is hear say. I just want the candidates to actually answer questions. I will vote for the person that actually presents what sounds like a viable plan for the economy, healthcare and Iraq. It is ashame that McCain gets to sit back while all this mudslinging gones on and money is wasted. It's lets see who can buy the presidentcy? I would like also to see more of Mrs. Obama. Where is she along with Mrs. McCain?
These two commentators are an embarrassment to ABC news. This country is in trouble and commentators spend 50 minutes asking presidential candidates trivial questions. People are hurting economically and financially. I will not listen to ABC evening news again. Professional commentators should be responsible for debates. A teenager could have asked better questions during the first 50 minutes.
ABC is taking much heat for the questions asked last night. Everybody notice the talking point about first hour being wasted on rumors/non-important info, etc? It's the same tune, fed by the top to the bottom feeders of outrage. And how dare ABC ask the questions the whole country is talking about?! How dare they? They should have only asked the exact same questions already posed in the other 22 debates. The American People deserve Platitudes, not original thought. We need BackinBarack to have one more chance of saying the same thing. Watching him actually have to think and craft his answers on the spot to tough questions was awkward for him and his supporters. They no likey. They want more hopitude and changiness! The real point to notice was how both candidates couldn't stop talking about Bush. NewsFlash, kids. He ain't running for office. Well done, George and Charlie. It was refreshing to watch candidates have to think instead of reciting their normal android responses. But I think you guys missed the memo about not making the BarackOMeter upset. He's supposed to be the next POTUS, you know.
C'mon people, this room is
Posted by: skinny black kid | Apr 17, 2008 6:46:56 PM
David, If you mean me, I'm not bitter. I'm outraged. And I'm not alone - and it's not just Obama supporters. I think, considering that he was subject to a well planned, deliberate hatchet job he did better than anyone I can remember in American politics. I'm outraged that a network would sponsor a debate and then spend almost a full hour on complete trivia "are you wearing a flag pin", (why didn't they ask does it say "made in china" like most do?). I expected fair play - I expected substance. I expected some questions about China, about the renewed violence in the middle east, about health care (which would not have favored Obama, by the way), some real questions about the energy crisis - biofuels are not the answer and everyone knows that. What about how they would deal with the $2 Million Sunni refugees? I expected real questions about real conflicts of interest - Mark Penn in Colombia, Bill Clinton in COlombia, Bill Clinton in CHina, Bill Clinton in Dubai. I would have been happy if they had simply said: explain our position in the middle east, the violence in Basra, and the how the ceasefire was achieved. It would have told us whether the candidates actually understand how complex the situation is. I would have been happy if they asked the candidates to explain what role their spouses will play in their presidency - I don;t want a co-presidency. And if you look anywhere besides one network and one columnist, you'll find the same sentiments. Everywhere. I agree with the people who say we should go back to the League of Women Voters. They were balanced, intelligent and asked some tough questions - and they weren't about lapel pins.
I disagree with the pundits, I think the most remarkable point in the debate was when Clinton said she would "was absolutely committed to not raising a single tax on raising taxes on middle class Americans, people making less than $250,000 a year." $250,000 a year? By what estimation, on what planet, do middle class people make $250,000 a year? When was the last time this woman had an acquaintance who was not a multi-millionaire, a hedge fund manager, a lawyer, or a lobbyist? By most estimates, families making $100,000 or below as middle class. Good Lord. Talk about elitist. Bitter about Obama? Obama came out ahead in this one. Nobody likes hatchet jobs except the real lunatic fringe.
Those of you that didn't like last nights debates, blame the Senator from Illinois. For the first hour, I thought it was an Obama speach. His cut throat attacks went unanswered by Clinton whom has too much class to lower herself to the Obama level. Obama should blame himself fot the first 20 minutes of the debate since it was mostly Obama talking I guess even the Senator from Illinois gets bored about his repetitive same speach that he repeats, and repeats, and repeats, and... Is Obama the energizer bunny? Now he goes not television and all the news networks show him saying tha Clinton took numerous digs. Clinton talking with knowledge must be what the Obama supporters are against.
out of all that is going on in the world today,your questions were comical at best. Having George to question Obama was very unfair. ABC has lost 1 of its very loyal viewers. This debate was a joke. We can hardly afford to drive to work and all you guys care about are flag pins. Well flag pins don't put gas in my tank. STICK TO THE ISSUES!!!!!! ABC should know better
There goes Obama again! He says one thing while his campaign does another.
He is a shrewd politician who for some reason expects to dish it out but not take it.
Last night's debate just made it crystal clear that Hillary is the better of the two.
Posted by: Evelyn | Apr 17, 2008 4:57:08 PM
The Clinton campaign DENIES and LIES again about the "Screw 'em" quote.
Hillary Spokesman Phil Singer insisted that Don Baer and Bruce Reed, other participants in the Camp David 1995 meeting, have no recollection of Clinton making the comment and don’t remember this as reflecting the tone of the meeting. Singer went on to say that if you look at the way Sen. Clinton has lived her life and the policies she's pursued, it’s clear she's advocated a progressive agenda aimed at lifting all Americans up.
Benjamin Barber, a noted political scientist and author who was also at the meeting, wrote in his 2001 book that Clinton did say it. As we noted earlier, Barber confirmed to First Read that he heard her make the comment and added that he is a Clinton supporter and donor. FEC data shows Barber donated $1,000 to Clinton’s campaign on Jan. 24.
That comment is sooooooooooo Her!
First, I am an Obama supporter. That said, I hate this digging around in dumpsters for stuff folks said years ago. That's the stink of politics this year (and maybe all years). We just wanted to hear about the nation's woes and how our respective candidates would react to those woes. And we ARE bitter -- bitter as H E double hockey sticks -- over what Bush, Cheney, and the rest of those egomaniacs have done to this nation. I don't want to bash Clinton. I don't want Clinton to bash Obama. And I *especially* don't appreciate ABC News bashing Obama (and Clinton a bit) in that debate fiasco. So Hillary said a nasty back in '95, and yes, it was not a misspeak but a clearly articulated statement I believe would appall her today. That was 13 years ago, and I believe she's grown up a lot since then. I believe Obama is a candidate of a lifetime, and have to cast my vote for him.
Posted by: Jon Trott | Apr 17, 2008 3:54:41 PM
There are now three witnesses who were there who back up the quote - and they aren't lowlifes looking for a buck. The full quote is actually worse - she says something like "they don't do anything for us."
But even though Bill Clinton has odone bad stuff - if you read the full quote from him and not just this line, it shows that he gets working class Americans and I genuinely believe he cared. Miss Wellesley is another story. Ever been there? Don't go without your Volvo.
Posted by: mara | Apr 17, 2008 3:44:09 PM
For all those people bashing ABC news for Obama's horrible performance last night(last time I checked I believe Obama answered for himself). Why won't you hold Barack Obama accountable for what he did, he just had a bad performance, so what it happens get over it. Why are you so bitter, oops I mean angry?! That was a close one.
Posted by: David | Apr 17, 2008 3:43:29 PM
Any idea how many calls the network received about that travesty of a debate? Last count it was 60,000 calls and over 14,000 emails - overwhelmingly negative and many from Hillary supporters.
Now I understand why the network only allowed 30 seconds of the debate to be covered by other networks.
Nobody won that debate. Least of all the American people.
Well don't you think that it time after 40s years to do somethings abpout this, the copst of living is out of this world and I'm not getting any younger, so all the talk need to turn to the walk, give us what we need for our country the way the past good leader have done. All the ideas that the U.S.A. have can still work if we get the evil out of our life, the peoples need the helpof good leader and by God we shall overcome.
Democratic candidates for Prez refused to debate on FOX thinking that the so called mainsteam media like ABC News is better, huh? Well, people now know that the most powerful forces in media are Drudge Report, FOX News and the tabloid press. They lead and the rest follow. CNN depends on them, as well as NBC News. Some of us who knew this all along are not surprised. The question is, what took the rest of you so long to know the truth. Yeah, liberal bias!
Posted by: LarrySpeakes | Apr 17, 2008 3:01:22 PM
The Clinton campaign paints Obama as elitist and condescending to small towns? Give me a break! Hillary came to our small town and others in Iowa before the caucuses and told us how important the caucuses were in determining the nominee. She said Iowa caucuses were the grassroots of the process. Once she lost Iowa and other small states, she abruptly changed her message to proclaiming that only the big states (her new elites?) had the important voters and that small states were now irrelevant. I do believe Hillary is the one “looking down” on the voters. Obviously she does not need the vote of this “irrelevant” voter should she win the nomination.
Posted by: Al Bode | Apr 17, 2008 2:56:22 PM
With all the recent discussion of elitism last night's Philadelphia debate showed that the true American elitists are George, Charlie and ABC News. With small town America facing issues of war, health care and economic recession all ABC News felt obligated to talk about were smallish issues such as Rev. Wright and flag pins. It's really George and Charlie who are saying to small town middle America, "Let them eat cake."
Posted by: EmEl | Apr 17, 2008 2:39:45 PM
Keeping Michigan and Florida out of the count helps Obama press that case. A recent salon.com article by Sean Wilentz explains why: "Under the existing system, Obama's current lead in the popular vote would nearly vanish if the results from Michigan and Florida were included in the total and his lead in pledged delegates would melt to almost nothing . . . Add those states' votes to the totals and take a sober look at Clinton's popular-vote victories in virtually all other large states, and the electoral dynamic changes."
Posted by: James from PA | Apr 17, 2008 2:31:15 PM
I have been an ABC News fan for 20 years, but I am going to find another network after last night's debate. What a despicable performance by both moderators... stirring a toxic brew of political nothingness. In the first 50 minutes Gibson and Stephanopouls somehow managed to avoid mentioning global warming, the recession, the housing crisis and the war in Iraq... but instead focused on stupid gotcha issues that only the most easily manipulated voter would care about. How embarrassing to see ABC demean itself and both candidates in this way. It would be good to hear an apology from ABC for their performance last night but I seriously doubt we'll ever get it.
Posted by: Dean | Apr 17, 2008 1:50:15 PM
Hillary`s negatives are skyrocketing, 58% say she is dishonest and untrustworthy. Not hard to understand when you read some of these insane comments by Hillary`s blogging supporters. Irrationally angry and vicious. Reminds me of the angry and vicious Republicans I know. I want no part of what they are offering America. More angry, disfunctional and irrational BS.
Posted by: musician | Apr 17, 2008 1:48:10 PM
Why didn't George and Charlie ask her to explain? Isn't that a double standard?
Posted by: Azar | Apr 17, 2008 1:46:59 PM
I just want to say as a lifetime Democrate for 49 years, I have never been so embarrassed to be a Democrate till now. Last nights debate was a total joke. Hillary, ABC, Nutter and Rendell did a good job of setting Senator Obama up. It appeared to me that the debate was not about real issues but instead, an agenda for Hillary's benefit. It was obvious that she knew what the questions were going to be and that it was decided to ask her about Bosnia once and disregard all of her other lies, mistatments and cheapshots. She has shown the American people exactly who and what she is. I am tired of her nasty self promoting games and more importantly, I am disappointed that the DNC has allowed her to tear the Democratic Party apart. It was so many times last night where Obama could have torn her apart, instead, he in a sense protected her on Bosnia and tried to deal more with the issues the American people are really concerned with. Instead, she took out her dagger and continued to dig. That is not a sign of a fighter or of strength, it's a sign of sleaziness, desparation and ignorance. Obama is clearly the better candidate. He is morally sound, trustworthy and genuinely concerned about the people. I have donated to his campaign at least twice a month and very proud to do so.
I am tired of listening to politcal analysis twist and turn words around and create massive issues out of nothing! This Primary has stressed me out and I have decided for my own morals and well being, that I will officially resign as a Democrat if Senator Obama is cheated out of the nomination.
I will leave the Hillary circus in November for the rest of you to enjoy and take my chances on the Republican side.
Sadly,
A Democrat on the fence.
Barack never said "screw em" about poor southerners (are Pennsylvanians southerners??) or anyone!! And, I do not think he feels that way either. I believe he cares a lot about all poor people.
I hope a lot of things change in this country too. We are not headed in the right direction. I hope we get out of Iraq, I hope I can continue to make my mortgage payments, I hope my company doesn't lay off any more workers, I hope the price of groceries and gas doesn't go up any more, I hope my kids can get through college, I hope we don't trash the planet for my grandkids, and I hope that politicians (and the media) start talking to us about things that matter instead of things that don't.
I'm voting for Barack Obama. I have hope he will change our country for the better. In fact, I'm downright optimistic about it.
Posted by: Marilyn | Apr 17, 2008 1:34:23 PM
Hilary Clinton is not an elitist? Screw the lunchbox democrats sounds elitist to me. I seriously doubt that she is out with all the Scranton crowd shooting squirrels for dinner because she is so darn working class. Give me a break - she is a cold lying snake in the grass and if she is nominated John McCain will be our next president. She will eat her words in November!
Posted by: daisy | Apr 17, 2008 1:27:11 PM
The more the media bashes Hillary, the more I refuse to vote for Obama. Anytime Obama lets his true self slip (i.e., says something racist or elitist), the media falls all over themselves to counter with something Hillary supposedly said or did. I don't know whom I'm more disgusted with, Obama and his worshippers or the mainstream media.
Debate, you call this a debate. I was asked questions ina debate when I was in the 8th grade. I wanted to know about all the issues, not who their friends are or what religion they belong to. ABC put on a poor debate and I will no longer watch, supposedly intelligent people try to ask questions that don't pertain to the way they will run the country. This was just a media bashing against both candidates. I take it most are for hilary. don't make it so obvious. as newsmen, you lost credibility. Do you actually think we all care about the menial things in everybodys life. I can buy a tabloid magazine and get better results. get a grip on the country and the peoples issues.
Whether she said this or not- she has said ENOUGH to let people know that she is a liar and not as experienced as she claims to be.
Bosnia- LIE
Irish peace process- LIE
Opposition to the war- flip flop/blame game
Health care experience- LIE
NAFTA- LIE
Colombia- LIE that she and Bill made nearly a million dollars from
I mean c'mon, Hillary is a liar through and through. She used to be a Republican and wrote a paper on why Blacks, Mexicans and Jews should NOT have equal rights in college....do you think that she has REALLY changed given all of the lies she tells the public? I don't.
This is a pathetic piece of news and I will never listen to that Huffington lady again in my life.
First of all this comment has nothing to do with what Obama said or did. This has to do with being betrayed and it is not talking about clinging to guns of religion. It is talking about someone turning his or her back on you, PROVIDING this is TRUE. Is there audio tape or video on this?
Otherwise I DON'T BUY IT.
What a crock and what a crock ABC is!
Well, you have to know Hillary is doing something evil at all hours of the day. Even while just standing there she's "opaque". Me, I get translucent when I stand around but you just knew she would get opaque.
Seeing the media slam Hillary would be pure comedy if it wasnt so ugly. They are like little kids who can't put down a favorite toy.
After viewing the debate I thought I was watching FOX with Hannity and O'Reily. I believe Sen.Obama handled the situation presidential he didn't come off annoyed to me. If he would have come off and charged at Clinton he would have come off as the "Angry Black Man" so I appreciate the road he is taking.. the high one. I think many people hate that they can't get under his skin so people take him as a snob.. kinda ironic
I finally had to turn off this debate after listening to Hillary trying to defend her lies about Bosnia, etc. and hearing what's his face constantly bombard Obama about not wearing a flag pin EVERY day! It actually made me want to puke! Aren't the issues of economy and the war and the state the US is in more important than wearing a stupid pin??? *I* am very patriotic but I don't wear flag pins, flag underwear or carry the flag around on my vehicle. What kind of trash debate was this? Shame on you so called "reporters" for asking such inane questions!
Posted by: Bizzybirdy | Apr 17, 2008 11:19:20 AM
In the Philadelphia debate, both Hillary and Obama regurgitated their familiar mantra that they would veto the falsely maligned Bush taxcuts which resuscitated the U.S. economy from the inherited Clinton recession; but, which Hillary and Obama say favor only the rich. That tired old populist ploy of "soak the rich". However , a brief review of IRS statistics related to post-Bush tax cut revenues reveals exactly the opposite. Specifically, the share of individual income taxes paid by the bottom 40% of American taxpayers, as a result of expanded child tax credits and earner income tax credits, was reduced from 0% to a -4%; and, took another ten million low income Americans completely off of the tax roles. That is, a very significant four(4) % decrease. On the other end of the scale, the tax burden on the top 20% of income earners, the so-called rich, increased to a full 85% of the total tax burden. For examples on the lower end of the scale, a Single Individual making 30K paid $8400 in taxes under Clinton; under Bush $4500. A married couple making 60K: under Clinton $16,800, under Bush $9000. So Hillary/Obamaspeak, an economic strategy that left our Nation in a RECESSION on the Clinton's departure from the White House, would damage the poor more then any other group. One can summarize this quite simply by noting that IF Hillary and Obama's Marxist philosophies of soaking the rich were valid, Communist societies throughout the world would be exorbitantly wealthy, in lieu of economic basket cases a' la Castro's Cuba. The same can be said of their forced plan for Socialized Medicine. A program which is failing miserably in such Nations as Canada and the United Kingdom. Canada, as just one example, is now experiencing a dramatic shortfall in physicians. Greg Neubeck
ABC should be ashame. This was a very boring and inappropriate debate and sad part is you got the same answers as FOX news, CNN, MSNBC and other news stations. This was a complete set up by ABC and the Clintons and I hope it come out soon. No matter what you do and say. Hillary will be going home.
For those who are disenchanted by the various news services, why not look at Fox news for a fair and balanced look at todays candidates.
Posted by: larry | Apr 17, 2008 10:04:00 AM
I can't believe we don't want to really get to know a Presidential contender. Why are we so willing to ignore flagrant intolerance, dishonesty, and moral weakness in a candidate? Yes, Pastor Wright's bigotry is important in this election year, as is Sen. Clinton's remarks about southern white men. I think we see a little more of both candidates than is comfortable for those that blindly follow the democrat party.
Obama’s associations with Farrahkan, Wright, Ayers and Refko should be fully vetted. Obama served on a board with Mr. Ayers in the 1990’s, the Woods Foundation, which was a paid, underlined PAID directorship position. They worked together, attended fundraisers together, Ayers held fundraisers and was a contributor to Obama’s Chicago’s campaign, plus they are neighbors and visited each other quite often. Enough said. This relationship deserves being vetted. What’s the fear?
DON’T FORGET THESE PEOPLE: Wright, Ayers, Sinclair, Farrakhan, the Black Panthers, Rezko, Meeks, Malley, Auchi, Khalidi, McPeaks, Michelle Obama.
Imagine OBAMA and ALL these friends, associates, endorsers, etc., having a Pres.-Elect party?
After a few --- Wright could get up and give another, 'HATE WHITEY AMERICA!', speech...while Rezko`s trying to sell the White House to the Russians...before Lewis Ayers gets a chance to full-fill his life-long dream of blowing it up...meanwhile, BO and Sinclair renew some bad habits together...as Michele likes to watch...would be quite a party...anyone for crashing it...and you thought the Clintons were bad in the White House...
I’d much rather have the Clintons there. Maybe - and that’s a HUGE maybe - involved in a scandal which doesn’t affect the American people --- this is why the media ignores this garbage for what it is and will continue to ignore it as old news. Without the media, Obama can’t use it effectively enough to beat her...which makes her far more electable.
Meanwhile, Hillary’s policies could have us in prosperous times --- compare that to BO and Friends...who, quite frankly, may be dangerous to the American people.
McCain’s going to wipe the floor with Obama!
They’ll rip him apart, along with each and every one of those “PEOPLE/GROUPS MENTIONED ABOVE”!!!
I cant believe that americans can get so easily distracted. Here we have the economy virtually on its knees and if something isnt done we are facing really tough times, and our politicians are arguing about why they didnt wear a american flag on their suit. I wouldnt be suprised if there is another debate, the candidaes would be discussing why one of them is not wearing an american flag underwear or panty.
Both candidates didnt give a clear perspective of what they want to do to revive the economy. But who can blame them, the average american person might be jobless and virtually drowning in debt but hIS biggest worry would be the pimple on his/her face.
I want to believe that there are americans out there who really care for their country and that their only reason to elect a candidate would be, to get the best person for the country.
This isnt the Biggest Loser race, where its important for a woman to win it, to prove women are equal to men.
I hope people would focus on real issue and not what someones pastor said etc....America needs a leader who has concrete plans to benefit our country.
IN GOD WE TRUST..... ..
@ CH
"Shame on you George and Charlie. This is not a debate but a Obama bashing. Again, a modern day lynching."
Ridiculous comments because the Republicans will be a lot harsher on Obama than that debate last night and those comments sound very Wright-esque.
"You should take a page from MSNBC on journalism."
Everyone knows MSNBC is in the tank for Obama, so that's a contradiction.
For those of you who claim the quote is 'unbelievable,' the author had more than one source & the sources have later come out & confirmed what they heard & saw.
Wait a minute!!! You're saying Hillary thinks one thing and says another????That would make her a hack who would say or do anything to win.Couldn't be...........
So should all Catholics leave the church because of the raping and pillaging of boys by priests? Where was Hilary's flag pin last night? And why did Bill Clinton pardon the Weather Underground guys? Inquiring minds want to know?
She may have been talking to her ( hubby) but she thinks this way she is a snob ,two faced ,thinks we are nothing but trash under her 250.00 shoes.She speaks well and she will tell you anything you want to hear but God help us if she gets in the White House.I don't want to work get 500.00 per week and send 250.00 to the government I don't know about you>>>>>>>
Posted by: honest | Apr 17, 2008 8:38:31 AM
And that's just exactly the kind of president he was, too. If you weren't doing something for him, he wasn't about to do anything for you. Quid Pro Quo. And that probably has a l;ot to do with $109Million dollars in 'earnings' in the last 7 years. A total sell out of the presidency and Ameirca.
B. Hussein Obama was caught on tape speaking candidly to other liberals in San Francisco last week.
One minute Obama was bowling in Pennsylvania with nice, ordinary people wearing "Beer Hunter" T-shirts, and the next thing you know, he was issuing a report on the psychological traits of normal Americans to rich liberals in San Francisco.
Obama informed the San Francisco plutocrats that these crazy working-class people are so bitter, they actually believe in God! And not just the 12-step meeting, higher power, "as you conceive him or her to be" kind of God. The regular, old-fashioned, almighty sort of "God."
As Obama put it: "(T)hey get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."
The rich liberals must have nearly fainted at the revelation that the denizens of small towns in Pennsylvania have absolutely no concern for the rich's ability to acquire servants from Mexico at a reasonable price.
WHAT IS THIS LOAD OF CRA! YOU HONESTLY CALL THIS PROFESSINALISM? OBAMA 08!
Shame on you George and Charlie. This is not a debate but a Obama bashing. Again, a modern day lynching.
I will NEVER watch either of your news shows EVER again.
To me you have aligned yourselves with Hillary and are chosing to "throw the kitchen sink" at Obama.
You should take a page from MSNBC on journalism.
After tonight, and things said and done in the past from Bill and Hillary, I think you can forget about the black vote in support of Hillary's campaign.
Oh, by the way, where is Hillary's american flag pin? I have not seen Hillary wear a flag pin.
Poor black folks have never come up during an argument with my wife.
Posted by: Brook | Apr 17, 2008 7:12:01 AM
When a husband and wife argue they are liable to say anything. Most married couples don't have people write books about their disagreements. This is a cheap shot.
Since most of the poor white boys are voting Republican now, it doesn't really matter, especially since 90% of the black vote is going Obama.
However, it is probably true that both Obama and Hillary have contempt for the small town and rural people that play that awful country music.
Posted by: Lance | Apr 17, 2008 7:06:23 AM
Darla, what do you mean this "doesn't sound like Hillary?" Do you know her well enough to say that? How do you know that she doesn't feel that way?
Posted by: Chaya | Apr 17, 2008 7:05:22 AM
Looks like Hillary's being treated like a Republican by the media. I'm sure she just "misspoke".
Who cares about all the personal stuff --i need to know how they are going to do their job.
i want personal info if I am going to date them.
So what we got dirt on Obama, Clinton every persident has some dirt! Now that we have imperfections out in the open can we get on with an election
It is obvious that the media is in the tank for Senator Obama. It finally took the ABC network to get it right. The other media networks have given Senator Obama a pass for too long. This generated media hype has created the belief that Senator Obama is able to walk on water. I have long given up on watching the news because of their unethical journalism. I have been writing these networks for months with information about Senator Obama that has been out there since he announced his campaign and imploring them to do their job and report all the news.
Furthermore, the information that is not aired but is out there by credible news organizations in the international community are the following: the complete story of Senator Obama's twenty year tie to the Trinity United Church of Christ (their support of the Nation of Islam and the lifetime achievement award to Louis Farrakhan), the church's separatist policy which can be found on their website called the Black Value System, his spiritual mentor Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. and his Black Liberation Theology (stemming from Marxist ideology and is supported by the Black Panthers), the church's Pro-Palestine support and their support of pastor's trip to meet with Khadafi in the eighties who was a known terrorist, Antoin Resko and his financial association to Arab billionaire Nadhmi Auchi (who was a co-conspirator and charged with Saddam Hussein to assassinate the President of Iraq Abdul-Karim Qasim in 1959, his friendship with American terrorists The Weatherman William Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn (who bombed U.S. buildings during the 1960-70's to overthrow the U.S. government), The Woods Funds membership which supports questionable Pro-Palestine organizations, Rashid Khalidi's group AAAN (Arab American Action Network) and their Pro-Palestinian fundraisers which the founder supports the PLO and his blood relationship with Raila Amolo Odinga of the Orange Democratic Movement and his interference with the Kenyan government's elections.
This will be a glaring indictment of his character and judgment, lack thereof. These connections will be a nightmare for Senator Obama to explain to the American people. Once the flood gates are opened, his campaign will be expiring just as quickly as his media generated "movement" started. I am certainly sure that the Republican Party will of course not hesitate to bring these to the attention of the American people. Would Americans be proud to have the President inviting into the White House these kinds of associations? If a registered Democrat like myself, finds all these nefarious relationships disturbing, then this will not be palpable for Republicans and for those Democrats who are not far left but who are moderate/conservative.
It never ceases to amaze me how we as americans are so easy to distract and mislead. Obama chooses to take the "high" road because if he goes scorched earth on Clinton the collateral damage could hurt in the Real Election a point that appears to be lost on Ms. Clinton. None of the candidates have experience governing, does anyone else find that interesting?
ALL politicians have unseemly associations, it's an occupational hazard the issue is, are they capable of independent ACTION and can they build coalitions that can get OUR work done. Say what you want not having a dialog with those who oppose us in thew world has led us to our current state of affairs, unless we're willing to bring back the draft "big stick" foreign policy is a threat to our national security.
Posted by: nothypnotized | Apr 17, 2008 3:31:58 AM
OK, was this really true or just put in a book to boost some juice? That doesn't even sound like Hillary. The media can pull up more "crap"!
