Clinton on Working-Class Southerners, circa 1995: "Screw 'em"
April 16, 2008 5:44 PM
Some readers have noted the fact that The Huffington Post is going all to town about an anecdote I reported back in October -- from Sally Bedell Smith's book "For Love of Politics: Bill and Hillary Clinton: The White House Years" -- that Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, during a 1995 retreat called the "Camp David Seminar on the Future of Democracy had some interesting comments about working-class white Southerners who had left the Democratic party:
"'Screw 'em,' she said, 'you don't owe them a thing, Bill, they're doing nothing for you.' Bill rose to their defense, 'as if rehearsing an old but honorable debate he had been having with his wife for decades,'" as one attendee recalled.
"'I know these boys,' Bill said. 'I grew up with them. Hardworking poor white boys who feel left out.' He pointed out that liberal reforms had often 'come at their expense' and that the Democrats had to 'find a way to include these boys in our programs.' Hillary had no rejoinder, but during cocktails after the seminar she stood apart, 'opaque and unsmiling.'"
The comment obviously takes on added meaning in light of the controversy over recent remarks by Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, about small-town Pennsylvanians and Sen. Hillary Rodham Mellencamp's new posturing on the subject.

It is easier to come out for Wolfson to LIE about the "SCREW EM" comment than the candidate herself - Hillary the LIAR CLINTON.
That comment is sooooooooooo Her!

First, I am an Obama supporter. That said, I hate this digging around in dumpsters for stuff folks said years ago. That's the stink of politics this year (and maybe all years). We just wanted to hear about the nation's woes and how our respective candidates would react to those woes. And we ARE bitter -- bitter as H E double hockey sticks -- over what Bush, Cheney, and the rest of those egomaniacs have done to this nation. I don't want to bash Clinton. I don't want Clinton to bash Obama. And I *especially* don't appreciate ABC News bashing Obama (and Clinton a bit) in that debate fiasco. So Hillary said a nasty back in '95, and yes, it was not a misspeak but a clearly articulated statement I believe would appall her today. That was 13 years ago, and I believe she's grown up a lot since then. I believe Obama is a candidate of a lifetime, and have to cast my vote for him.

There are now three witnesses who were there who back up the quote - and they aren't lowlifes looking for a buck. The full quote is actually worse - she says something like "they don't do anything for us."
But even though Bill Clinton has odone bad stuff - if you read the full quote from him and not just this line, it shows that he gets working class Americans and I genuinely believe he cared. Miss Wellesley is another story. Ever been there? Don't go without your Volvo.

For all those people bashing ABC news for Obama's horrible performance last night(last time I checked I believe Obama answered for himself). Why won't you hold Barack Obama accountable for what he did, he just had a bad performance, so what it happens get over it. Why are you so bitter, oops I mean angry?! That was a close one.

Any idea how many calls the network received about that travesty of a debate? Last count it was 60,000 calls and over 14,000 emails - overwhelmingly negative and many from Hillary supporters.
Now I understand why the network only allowed 30 seconds of the debate to be covered by other networks.
Nobody won that debate. Least of all the American people.

Well don't you think that it time after 40s years to do somethings abpout this, the copst of living is out of this world and I'm not getting any younger, so all the talk need to turn to the walk, give us what we need for our country the way the past good leader have done. All the ideas that the U.S.A. have can still work if we get the evil out of our life, the peoples need the helpof good leader and by God we shall overcome.

Democratic candidates for Prez refused to debate on FOX thinking that the so called mainsteam media like ABC News is better, huh? Well, people now know that the most powerful forces in media are Drudge Report, FOX News and the tabloid press. They lead and the rest follow. CNN depends on them, as well as NBC News. Some of us who knew this all along are not surprised. The question is, what took the rest of you so long to know the truth. Yeah, liberal bias!

The Clinton campaign paints Obama as elitist and condescending to small towns? Give me a break! Hillary came to our small town and others in Iowa before the caucuses and told us how important the caucuses were in determining the nominee. She said Iowa caucuses were the grassroots of the process. Once she lost Iowa and other small states, she abruptly changed her message to proclaiming that only the big states (her new elites?) had the important voters and that small states were now irrelevant. I do believe Hillary is the one “looking down” on the voters. Obviously she does not need the vote of this “irrelevant” voter should she win the nomination.

With all the recent discussion of elitism last night's Philadelphia debate showed that the true American elitists are George, Charlie and ABC News. With small town America facing issues of war, health care and economic recession all ABC News felt obligated to talk about were smallish issues such as Rev. Wright and flag pins. It's really George and Charlie who are saying to small town middle America, "Let them eat cake."

Keeping Michigan and Florida out of the count helps Obama press that case. A recent salon.com article by Sean Wilentz explains why: "Under the existing system, Obama's current lead in the popular vote would nearly vanish if the results from Michigan and Florida were included in the total and his lead in pledged delegates would melt to almost nothing . . . Add those states' votes to the totals and take a sober look at Clinton's popular-vote victories in virtually all other large states, and the electoral dynamic changes."

I have been an ABC News fan for 20 years, but I am going to find another network after last night's debate. What a despicable performance by both moderators... stirring a toxic brew of political nothingness. In the first 50 minutes Gibson and Stephanopouls somehow managed to avoid mentioning global warming, the recession, the housing crisis and the war in Iraq... but instead focused on stupid gotcha issues that only the most easily manipulated voter would care about. How embarrassing to see ABC demean itself and both candidates in this way. It would be good to hear an apology from ABC for their performance last night but I seriously doubt we'll ever get it.

Hillary`s negatives are skyrocketing, 58% say she is dishonest and untrustworthy. Not hard to understand when you read some of these insane comments by Hillary`s blogging supporters. Irrationally angry and vicious. Reminds me of the angry and vicious Republicans I know. I want no part of what they are offering America. More angry, disfunctional and irrational BS.

Why didn't George and Charlie ask her to explain? Isn't that a double standard?

I just want to say as a lifetime Democrate for 49 years, I have never been so embarrassed to be a Democrate till now. Last nights debate was a total joke. Hillary, ABC, Nutter and Rendell did a good job of setting Senator Obama up. It appeared to me that the debate was not about real issues but instead, an agenda for Hillary's benefit. It was obvious that she knew what the questions were going to be and that it was decided to ask her about Bosnia once and disregard all of her other lies, mistatments and cheapshots. She has shown the American people exactly who and what she is. I am tired of her nasty self promoting games and more importantly, I am disappointed that the DNC has allowed her to tear the Democratic Party apart. It was so many times last night where Obama could have torn her apart, instead, he in a sense protected her on Bosnia and tried to deal more with the issues the American people are really concerned with. Instead, she took out her dagger and continued to dig. That is not a sign of a fighter or of strength, it's a sign of sleaziness, desparation and ignorance. Obama is clearly the better candidate. He is morally sound, trustworthy and genuinely concerned about the people. I have donated to his campaign at least twice a month and very proud to do so.
I am tired of listening to politcal analysis twist and turn words around and create massive issues out of nothing! This Primary has stressed me out and I have decided for my own morals and well being, that I will officially resign as a Democrat if Senator Obama is cheated out of the nomination.
I will leave the Hillary circus in November for the rest of you to enjoy and take my chances on the Republican side.
Sadly,
A Democrat on the fence.

Barack never said "screw em" about poor southerners (are Pennsylvanians southerners??) or anyone!! And, I do not think he feels that way either. I believe he cares a lot about all poor people.

I hope a lot of things change in this country too. We are not headed in the right direction. I hope we get out of Iraq, I hope I can continue to make my mortgage payments, I hope my company doesn't lay off any more workers, I hope the price of groceries and gas doesn't go up any more, I hope my kids can get through college, I hope we don't trash the planet for my grandkids, and I hope that politicians (and the media) start talking to us about things that matter instead of things that don't.
I'm voting for Barack Obama. I have hope he will change our country for the better. In fact, I'm downright optimistic about it.

Hilary Clinton is not an elitist? Screw the lunchbox democrats sounds elitist to me. I seriously doubt that she is out with all the Scranton crowd shooting squirrels for dinner because she is so darn working class. Give me a break - she is a cold lying snake in the grass and if she is nominated John McCain will be our next president. She will eat her words in November!

The more the media bashes Hillary, the more I refuse to vote for Obama. Anytime Obama lets his true self slip (i.e., says something racist or elitist), the media falls all over themselves to counter with something Hillary supposedly said or did. I don't know whom I'm more disgusted with, Obama and his worshippers or the mainstream media.

the two interviewers were trying to take Obama down but it didn't work.....Why did George as Clinton about this I mean c'mon, Hillary is a liar through and through. She used to be a Republican and wrote a paper on why Blacks, Mexicans and Jews should NOT have equal rights in college....do you think that she has REALLY changed given all of the lies she tells the public? I don't.
