Clinton Plays the Bin Laden Card
April 21, 2008 5:46 PM
I've been on the road all day, so I haven't seen Sen. Hillary Clinton's new TV ad until just now.
It features, to my knowledge, the first image of Osama bin Laden to be used in a TV ad this political season.
The image comes alongside other historical images presidents have had to deal with -- headlines about the Stock Market Crash of 1929 and the Cold War, images of Pearl Harbor and soldiers and Katrina, Nikita Khrushchev and Fidel Castro...and OBL.
Previous Republican TV ads featuring bin Laden have met with condemnation from Democrats. In 2006 and in 2002.
What do you think? Above board or fear-mongering?

In all HRC ads, Obama's name is never mentioned, but in Obama's ads, he goes personal, calling HRC a liar and untrustworthy.
Now, compare that with HRC ad using Osama image and you Obmanites, tell me which ad is negative?
Can you imagine what the media will be saying about HRC if she were to call Obama a liar and untrustworthy?
Obamanites will be all bent out of shape.
Posted by: SO | Apr 23, 2008 2:18:10 PM
So? Why is it okay for Obama to use any image in his campaign but not okay for Hillary to use any image in her campaign. What has Osama got to do with Barrack Obama?
Why is MSM and Obamanites this jittery about everything?
I hope those of you have daughters experience what the MSM and Obamanites are doing to Hillary.
HRC is the stronger candidate, Period.
Obama will not withstand the general election. You will see.

I was SHOCKED when I saw this "Bin Laden ad" Hillary ran in PN, which the media is so stirred up about. It's a flash of a second of Bin Laden, along with scenes from Pearl Harbor, and numerous other challenging moments in our history, and in the ad it is asserted that Hillary is ready to meet whatever challenges we face. Holy crap, how's that negative? Because Axelrod says so? Talk about distortion! It's like Bush not being able to pronounce a word (nucular) or his operatives using terms like "cut and run," and the media adopting those pronunciations or slogans and relentlessly parroting them back to us - cause he calls them cutsie nick names? Solders have to die cause the media likes being called cutsie names?!?
Yes, this is all starting to remind me too damn much of the media's adoration of George Bush, with his little pet names and affable personality. By the time they looked up from sucking face with him, he'd lied us into a war, raped our economy, giving our treasure to his cronies, and had been playing fast and loose with our civil rights.
I'm not looking for a Prom King or the Senor Class' most likable. I'm hiring someone to run the country.
I don't CARE about who's "in like" with Obama. I'm really sick of getting what they deserve.

I have seen the ad and I do not get the problem. The ad is about threats: Pearl Harbor, gas crisis, economy, stock market crash, etc, and Bin Laden. If you are going to produce an ad about threats how can you not include Bin Laden? Obama supporters are calling this ad negative. By what stretch of the imagination is this negative? This is simply a variation on the 3am phone call theme. Hillary's selling point is her perceived experience, and ability to handle a crisis. This ad is just drawing people's attention back to that selling point. What's the big deal?
Calling the ad negative is just Obama spin.

Is she playing the game how low can you go? Because if so she is the clear victor. If she really cared about this country and the democratic party she would stop this negative behavior.
Posted by: Tiffany | Apr 22, 2008 10:40:39 AM
Waving your wand at a potential adversary is, at the very least, undiplomatic behavior for a potential head of state and government. She reminds me of GWB's comments on Saddam stating "We'll take him out." I am her constituent and have voted for her as US senator. She is a good senator. Let's keep her in office in that role.

Al Gore is the only Democrat qualified to be in the White House.
And, he will be.
Remember 1968...

We can get out of all the wars we are in by surrendering at once.
There is only one candidate I know who is qualified for that job.
Obama Can - 2008
Because surrender is always cheaper than victory.

She could've done it a lot tougher. For an example, see the scene in Scrooged about Bill Murray's proposed TV ad. That's a good example of over-the-top fear-mongering.
Posted by: M. Green | Apr 22, 2008 7:09:12 AM
Its amazing, Obama does not want to offer any constructive comments or now participate in any debates. Its easy
not to comment when you have most of main stream media in your pocket.

The point is that a US president has had to deal or try to deal with all these issues. On the stump now he is constantly talking about how we are at a pivotal point in our history....that it's a terrible time and we need leadership.
I'm not sure why he minds the visuals.
I do know that whatever ad she uses he will complain and whine about it.
Posted by: Jackie | Apr 22, 2008 5:23:03 AM
Bill Clinton once said, "No one ever wins by looking back at the past but by looking forward to the future." Apparently Hillary was asleep when he said that.
I wonder how Hillary intends to pay off her over 10 million in debt without dipping into her own money. Perhaps she just does not intend to pay these people at all. After all, they are just everyday working people.

Very well done Hillary! Should have done it much earlier, but it is still not too late. Got my vote for sure.

I have watched this election from the sidelines and had decided not to vote until today. The Clintons dishonesty and crude behavior has convinced me that we cannot allow them to rule again. However much they have tried to taint Obama by the use of cleverly divisive words make me afraid about the future under the Clintons.I will vote for Obama

completely above board. the question the ad poses is 'who is ready?' it is in keeping with her campaign's message.

I know what the Clintons would bring back to the White House - scandals. One scandal after another - Bill has been influence peddling since leaving office. His library donors will be sleeping in the Lincoln Bedroom, again...
Why couldn't ABC News have asked ONE question about Bill's influence peddling during the recent debate?

I love Hillarys add. It has showen the things that have happened to America. She it trying to make you think, being president is a very serious job. And you have to be prepared for anything at anytime. If you think this is fear mongering then you better get out of your fantasy world. bad things happen. This is the reality of life.

We cannot afford to get into another war but Hillary won't hesitate to nuke Iran. What????? We don't need this.

Ah, how soon we forget. Of course, Jake probably forgot this unforgettable clip with bin Laden because Giuliani dropped out of the race shortly afterwards. Clinton should keep that in mind.
Rudy Giuliani TV Ad - "Ready"
(ABC flags Y**Tube and its links as spam so go to Y**Tube and search for rudy tv ready)
"...and Osama bin Laden still making threats. In a world where the next crisis is a moment away, America needs a leader who's ready."
Posted by: Tom J | Apr 21, 2008 9:07:54 PM
Really Doug? How so? Are you going to be a rehash of Zdnet here?
Cite the specific date, time and place where either candidate said they would unilaterally bomb Iran. You can't.

I'm for McCain and I've loathed the Clintons for years. And yet I never thought anything could make the Clintons look good to me.
But Barack, his anti american pals, AND his rabid bully supporters have made even the Clintons look like decent, America-loving people.
Wow.
Posted by: Jo | Apr 21, 2008 8:39:30 PM
This is exactly why we need Obama. Cowboy Bush has led this country with domination and arrogance and bully tactics. We need change. We have lost all respect with the rest of the world. I believe Obama can change that.

"Hillary Clinton is turning herself into Karl Rove's top student."
Yes, right behind Mr. Obama himself.
Posted by: highly capable women | Apr 21, 2008 8:35:12 PM
The only reason Obama doesn't need a Karl Rove is because he has the backing of the mainstream media.
It's amazing how you can portray yourself as "above it all" when the media or moveon.org does your dirty work for you.

highly capable woman-
The difference between what Obama did or didn't do is that it didn't affect our allies and it didn't betray the american people.
Hillary funding the PLO (terrorist organizations) hosting hamas leader at the White House affects our entire nation!
I don't get you people who are willing to overlook this woman's lack of character! what's the matter with you guys?

Zdnet -- Your quotes are taken out of some context to spin them as unilateral statements. Do you think we are all that stupid? Again, cite the specific quote, day and place that any statements were made that said we would UNILATERALLY bomb ANY nation.
You can't because they were never said.

Yeah Stacy, and Barack Obama sat in the pews listening to the Farrakhan-loving, America-hating Rev. Wright. He obviously agrees with this man's views since he has continuously donated to this man's church year after year. It is this very judgment that you want to step into the most powerful position in the world?
Disgusting.
Where is your outrage over that or is your real name Keith Olbermann?
Obama is unelectable in the general election.

People must get scared very easily if this type of ad "scares" them. Obama's campaign is the one using the Karl Rove playbook, and deflection is one of his favorite plays. You would have to go through life with your head completely in the sand to not realize we live with these kind of threats and uncertainties every day. Better to think ahead now and elect a President who will be able to deal with crisis when they happen, and not have to gather all of his advisers and ask what he should do. What scares me is electing a wishy washy President who has no idea what he is doing and is even afraid to hold a press conference in fear of getting a hard question. A lot of people have voted in these primaries who did not give due consideration to legitimate concerns such as brought up in this ad.

YoungAtHeart - Can you explain, then, why he hasn't had one meeting of the Foreign Relations Committee since he became the chairperson for the committee? They interact with NATO, most of our European allies. Without saying he's been campaigning ( he's been campaining since he hit Chicago, with few, if any, benefits to his constituency...heard his district in Chicago looks like Haiti after a tornado) since the start of his career, what is your explanation?

For someone who voted for the war because she did not read, who is now talking about Osama Bin Ladin and how she will flush him out, who uses fear tactics to get votes I guess the question for me is WHAT KIND OF PRESIDENT DO WE WANT and are we so afraid that we can not make up our minds without all the media garbage...

The 3 am ad and now this ad demonstrate a willingness to tackle the serious issues facing our nation. To dismiss them as fear-mongering shows a weakness in her opponent that he is unprepared and unwilling to overcome his inexperience, further demonstrating that he is unelectable in a general election. Instead of attacking Clinton's solutions, Obama should be offering some of his own.

Her stunts to keep a long moribund campaign limping along and the old tired tactics it embodies from being consigned to the dustbin of history is particularly loathsome.

But I will not vote for her. I will leave it blank and move on but I won't vote Clinton. More issues that Obamabots declare out of bounds.Who told Obama he gets to determine which issues are legit and which are "manufactured issues?" Stop whining and campaign!
BTW--for those residing in the Obamashpere--the images in the video represent reality; we need a president who is ready to deal with it.
Democrats and Republicans--unite against Obama! America deserves better.

Well to me the increase in the price of gas is a lot more scary then seeing OBL image, for all we know he must be dead by now, but the increase in gas is a reality, home foreclosure is a reality, flooding is a reality, a fall in the economy is a reality.

Posted by: Mick | Apr 21, 2008 6:32:55 PM
and I love all the dems who would have trashed the republicans for using it ...now all think it is okay to use fear mongering...well the reason we need to fear is because Senators like you did not stand up and say "focus on Al Quaeda". Instead you gave permission to a whack job crook of a president and his cronies... and now you hint to the same power by saying you want to start an "umbrella of protection" against Iran on the US' dime to protect with "massive retaliation" on Iran...
Iran did not attack us...Iraq did not attack us...
so the only thing this ad should scare us into is to remind us who screwed up in the first place.

"So Osama Bin Laden is not important? Terrorism isn't a threat?'
No one who supports Senator Obama would deny that Osam bin Laden or that terrorism are not threats. However, give that the Democrats vehemently opposed such ads in the past, the fact that Hillary is now using those same tactics against one our own candidates- good old fear mongering - just shows how low she can go.

As far as I know it was a Clinton who let Osama escape in the 90's because Monica and the impeachment scandal took too much of his attention.
My prediction is that Obama's Pentagon will be able to track down Osama. He's the one whose major focus in our war on terrorists is on the Afghanistan/Pakistan border and on Taliban and Al Qaeda centers in Pakistan.
Obama will get the job done.
Posted by: Marian | Apr 21, 2008 6:18:33 PM
I think Hillary can't afford all these ads.
Her campaign will be bankrupt at the end of this month, her most expensive one
so far.
That will have a larger impact on voters than any of her expensive ads, I guess.
Posted by: Token | Apr 21, 2008 6:12:44 PM
I guess Hillary is a liar but Obama is a "lie". He lies about the year he was born, he lies about the Million Man March, he lies and lies and lies. And the American media says Sen. Clinton is the source. The fact remains, the Obama mafia formerly called Obama campaign committee says anything they want and Sen. Obama says he is not responsible. In my view, Bush does have a clone named 'Barak Obama'.
Posted by: Dr Hubert, Lt Col, USAF Retired | Apr 21, 2008 6:09:31 PM
Yes this is fearmongering. It is also prompted by the Clintons, their surrogates and supports who are truly terrified. They are terrified not by threats to America from outside the nation. They are terrified by the threat to their own political kingdom posed by Barak Obama.

This ad is totally appropriate and simply highlights the challenges we face in this country. We need to think about who we think is the best candidate to deal with all of the issues mentioned in the ad.
