Clinton Top Aide Working to Help Colombian Trade Deal She Opposes, Part II
April 04, 2008 1:53 PM
Last year, Mark Penn told the Washington Post that conflicts of interest like this would not happen.
"Penn said that he has been cleared of all client responsibilities, except for Microsoft, for the duration of the campaign but that he still relies on a team of about 20 employees to do most of the day-to-day work. Though running a major company and a presidential campaign at the same time would seem to provide a number of possible conflicts, Penn insists there are none," the newspaper reported.
More to the point, what does this do to Sen. Hillary Clinton's outrage about the Austan Goolsbee story?
During that kerfuffle, Clinton lectured reporters to "look at that story, substitute my name for Senator Obama. If some of my advisers had been having private meetings with foreign governments and basically saying ignore what I'm saying because it's only political rhetoric…"
That of course is not what Penn was doing. He was, for cash money, advising the Colombian government how to get the trade deal passed, how to build popular support for it in the U.S. and in Congress.
What would Clinton say if David Axelrod were advising Colombia on how to pass the deal despite Sen. Barack Obama's opposition to it?
Holding a press conference right now, I bet.

Listed below are links to weblogs that reference Clinton Top Aide Working to Help Colombian Trade Deal She Opposes, Part II:
HOW will Obama pay for all his promises if he still maintains the war in Iraq and does not withdraw the troops and cannot save the money spent on the war for other uses? Everyday we hear about a change to the Obama plan to bring troops home. Obama can't deliver what he promises. He promises something different every day. Deny, deceive and destroy.

I'd rather the relationship between Clinton and Penn than the one with Obama and Rezko.
Clinton campaign did not engage in talks with Colombia or with Canada. What Penn did was on his own and not in behalf of the Clinton campaign or anything to do with Hillary Clinton. Rezko is another story.

Both Clintons have a decade-long relationship with Mark Penn.
The same Mark Penn that has earned millions to represent anti-union interests and companies, resulting in loss of benefits - including health care and retirement. What a slap in "the face to Hillary and Bill's so-called "base", union workers and working-class Americans.
This is also the same Mark Penn that is now pushing for a free-trade agreement in a country where union workers have been murdered repeatedly; an agreement that has the potential to result in even more lost jobs for our working-class families.
Hillary Clinton knows exactly what Mark Penn represents, which is everything she "claims" not to.
If she truly cared about working-class citizens she would have "denounced" and "rejected" her relationship with Mr. Penn many years ago.
Hillary has repeatedly denounced Obama for relationships, yet puts this man, who is the epitome of anti-Democratic values and concerns, front and center in her campaign.
I feel so sorry for the working class in this country who are being duped by Hillary. What a price they will pay if this ultra-rich, hypocritical, in-bed-with-the-Republicans, power hungry, compulsive liar makes her way into the White House at the expense of the working poor who put her there.

DaCoach-Penn is doing HIS day job like I work the night shift. Penn apparently met with Columbian trade officials on HIS day job and NOT on behalf of Hillary Clinton who does not support Penn in any way shape or form according to Trapper's part 1&2. If I was Hillary, and I'm not, I would have gotten rid of that guy when I suggest she do so during the Iowa primary. Even I could see back then the terrible ground game Penn had in mind. I have not been proven wrong then or later. As a Clinton supporter I have written the Clinton campaign suggesting exactly what I write here.

DEMs is gambling their own presidency by trying to use an in-experienced and non-accomplished person to regain W.H...
No wonder Dems is called "liberal"....
Reps is more conservative and they believe you have to earn it by your solid records, your hard-works, your experiences, and achievements....
Americans will judge who they will trust to lead them in Nov..

Sounds to me like Penn is double dealing. If this is the case, he needs to resign or be fired! No excuses.

The funny thing is I make comments all the time about how Obama should start shaking up how he explains things in his rally and meetings and such...because I think they are getting boring...
the same policies, the same phrasing the same stances...
Now I understand why he does that...because he is consistent. That doesn't mean he is not open minded and smart enough to know he is setting a plan but unlike Georgie W. he realizes that openness and being able to adapt to problems is the best way to make his plan work...
Consistency of goals... openness of how to move them forward.

I don't get it. This is an article about an obvious conflict of service within the Clinton inner circle. So the comments in here are littered with Clinton supporters discussing everything but the article.
Go back to the time when NAFTA was a topic and Obama's alleged dust up was unanimously criticized by Hillary's folks.
Well, if you can't remain objective about politicians and their wrongdoings, you're no better than Bushies. Now you know why so many Obama supporters insist experience when wielded by politicians who try to serve special interests is not the type experience America needs.

I have no idea what you are talking about...I have not deciphered anything that "obama meant"... I have thrown some logic against the spin and anger coming out of the other side...
I say stop spinning doesn't mean I am explaining what he meant I am just trying to get the lies not to carry on the wind of the internet as they keep trying to do... ...and epithets.

dl-See? That's the problem. People here get frustrated and say things to get folks all up in arms. Next we have more garbage going back and forth. Usually intelligence can can win the day in most cases. So I try and ignore except for someone doing a personal thing on me.

GS
The problem is Hillary says she is against them now... the biggest problem with this candidate is "where is she when it counts?"
She seems to be so for or against something when it is about polling or votes...not when it is about the citizens.
NAFTA, the WAR, Michigan, Florida...
It's the worst kind of politician whose judgement has clearly been shown to reflect her best interests... in her judgements. She may be for or against these things when it counts in her heart but she sure only gets to action when it is safe.

Obama as the nominee=Republican Victory

Ok -
Hillary needs to shut the door on her way out. This will be a tipping point for the last part of her campaign.
She needs to step aside, and let the voters support the Dems vs. McCain so we can actually have a chance at changing our government.

Gang 2010 is still within the range of drawdown of Obama's proposal and he said #1 "we are going to be as careful getting out as we were getting in"
His proposal...is like Lincolns where every idea is at the table...no one getting paid for it...but he is the final decider...and GW and Hill are similar in the fact that there are no "disagreers" at the table (unless they are getting paid by lobbyists)...
Old politics...politics that work like molasses.

Obama has no exeperiences at all on ECONOMY and national security...
So please tell Americans how he can win over McCain???
Posted by: True Truth | Apr 4, 2008 3:42:36 PM
WCM-I vote for what's best for America first and the party a distant second. And with this democratic party in this state its in right now with Dean and his merry bunch of idiots who cannot even run their own primary I'm not going to put the safety of American in their hands, period.
Posted by: Dogsoldier | Apr 4, 2008 3:35:32 PM
I'm a democrat and remember.....
JOHN KERRY?
EVERY LIBERAL LOVED HIM!
HOLLYWOOD LOVED HIM!
DEMOCRATS LOVED HIM!
COLLEGE STUDENTS LOVED HIM!
AND WHERE DID THAT LEAD US?
Posted by: John | Apr 4, 2008 3:35:12 PM
I could care less whether Hillary stays in this all the way to the convention, as the outcome will still be the same. More power to her. She is vetting Obama and making him a more formidable candidate, every time he bounces back.
Obama will win the democratic nomination, and then he will easily beat McCain in November because of the following issues:
Economy/Jobs/Recession
Etremely unpopular Iraq War
Bush/Republican voter backlash
Overwhelming desire for change/hope
Real Health Care Reform
McCain is banking on American fears and security concerns to win him the election. That was the last election cycle issue in 2004. This time everyone knows it will be primarily about the ECONOMY!!
Posted by: rco | Apr 4, 2008 3:33:17 PM
That is exactly right...okay let's do that
"David Axelrod is being paid by Columbian officials to talk about how to make sure the Columbian version of NAFTA is passed."
what do you think the American people and Press would do with that? What do you think Howard Wolfson would do for days with that? What do you think Foxnews (your "unbiased" new source of news for election coverage... sorry threw up a little in my mouth...still flabbergasted by that one)
what would Foxnews do if David Axelrod was getting paid to help push through a new NAFTA type agreement?
and if you all say one more time the MSM is so biased...look even Hillary is in such her own universe she thinks Obama would be treated better with this situation...
I don't think anyone can ask the aforementioned questions and not realize (even if you won't admit it) that the Clintons don't realize how they have been treated incredibly gently by both the other side AND the MSM.
Posted by: dl | Apr 4, 2008 3:33:10 PM
Yes Obama LIES are coming out slowly but surely and they are not being covered enough. Wasn't Obama all about bringing the soldiers right away? He keeps deceiving the voters promising the world but its all talk and no action. What else you got for us voters?
Posted by: Persio | Apr 4, 2008 3:31:20 PM
WCM-Even if Clinton were to drop out tomorrow there is no change in my stance. And voting FOR Obama is not an option.
Posted by: Dogsoldier | Apr 4, 2008 3:29:55 PM
Let's just get this overwith and start fresh in another 4 years.
Posted by: molly | Apr 4, 2008 3:29:51 PM
Mike Medeiros-Perhaps we could also discuss Axelrod and his Move On attack dog organization the Obama camp use to attack Clinton with the full blessings of the Obama campaign itself.

Does Penn mention Hillary in these meetings?
Posted by: Don | Apr 4, 2008 3:23:55 PM
SuperDelegates,
Hillary Clinton needs to win the popular votes, Florida and Michigan voters need to be included in some format, and judgement should dictate the Super Delegate outcome. I'm a die-hard Clinton supporter, but I'd rather see the nomination go to Obama than to do a complete disregard of any Democratic voting basis in order to grant Hillary the nomination. If she doesn't make it then I'll support her in four years against McCain. Obama's unelectability is not a sufficient basis alone for Hillary to be granted the nomination. Democrats may need to learn some hard lessons, but we have it coming.

This Mark Penn story should be big news. With MLK and the weekend we'll see how much attention it gets.
Posted by: Mike Medeiros | Apr 4, 2008 3:18:46 PM
Jackt51-Bring it on? Well, perhaps we could start with the 80,000 troops Obama wants to leave in Iraq. Considering on Tue. Jan 30, 2007 Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama said Tuesday U.S. combat forces should be out of Iraq by spring 2008 to end “a foreign policy disaster,” but he stopped short of endorsing a cutoff in funds.
Posted by: Dogsoldier | Apr 4, 2008 3:16:29 PM
Simple math tells you that even basic plans to pull out in 16 months will in fact take us into the spring of 2010 if the pull outs start exactly on inauguration day. Where's the contradiction ?
Posted by: Mike Medeiros | Apr 4, 2008 3:13:02 PM
This nomination was statistically over after Texas and Ohio. The fact that she was hanging around hoping that some great calamity would befall Obama and she could swoop in an steal the nomination.
I find it a little amusing that since that time, Obama has weathered the Wright flap and actually INCREASED his polling, and Clinton has dodged imaginary sniper fire, had Bill Clinton harangue the very Super Delegates she needs, the "He cannot win" flap regarding Richardson (another "mis-recollection" that her campaign AGAIN had to correct), now this. The Clinton tax returns haven't even been released yet! During this string of gaffes her polling has plummeted precipitously.
I guess the moral here is: Careful what you wish for.
BTW - This would be HILARIOUS if the problems facing this country weren't so dire. Barack Obama WILL be the Democratic Presidential nominee, and I look forward to a spirited debate in the General Election.

After Clinton screaming for the media to cover the lie from Canada, found to be actually her aids doing the reassuring, I find it so enlightening to find that her aids are setting up programs that she is suppose to oppose....just like her 5 meetings where she was nothing short of a cheer leader for NAFTA....the longer this poor excuse for a woman is in the lime light, the harsher she becomes as the true meaning of "bad news" is stuck to her like glue.
Go ahead PA and vote for her simply because her Dad was born there LOL Lose more jobs because if Penn is heading this Free Trade Agreement? You can best the house she is behind him too or he wouldn't be THERE. She pushed NAFTA and now this...what more do you people need to see that perhaps Rendell is freaking nuts and should be locked away for the public good. I mean come it took that moron 16 years of running to get elected. The whole bunch stink.

Well, Dogbreath!
Bring it on!
Posted by: Jackt51 | Apr 4, 2008 3:02:44 PM
Well, did Penn meet Columbian officials on behalf of Clinton or not? That's a fair question, correct?
Posted by: Dogsoldier | Apr 4, 2008 2:50:33 PM
And yes without seating Michigan and Florida all this chatter is meaningless and the Democrats dont have a hope of regaining the white house.
Posted by: s.b. | Apr 4, 2008 2:37:22 PM
Unless Penn specifically talks about Hillary's policies, then it's not the same. What happened with Obama was that the guy actually talked about Obama's position on NAFTA. If Penn doesn't drag Hillary's name in it, then it doesn't matter.
Why are you acting like you don't know this?
Posted by: jose | Apr 4, 2008 2:37:15 PM
Non issue that her campaign team has day jobs that have been waiting for over a year and this race has gone longer than they expected.
Posted by: s.b. | Apr 4, 2008 2:36:05 PM
Thank you ABC for reporting on this.
You might also want to report that Penn represents the maker of Aquadots. (Major recall around Christmas because of the danger it posed to our children).
Hillary knows all this about Penn. Why does she have him as a senior strategist?

this is outrageous, ESPECIALLY given her hypocritical quote on the far less egregious (and ultimately specious) NAFTA-gate scandal.
Posted by: carpediva | Apr 4, 2008 2:29:02 PM
@ TKD
Keep laughing about disenfranchising voters, doesn't McCain have a lead over Obama in FLORIDA?
Democrats: "Good bye White House in 2009"
Republicans: "Thank you, John Kerry Jr. (a.k.a Obama)!"
Posted by: Don | Apr 4, 2008 2:27:08 PM
Soon, Hillary will announce that she has won the Colombian primary, and demand that Colombia be recognized as a full voting delegation to the national convention.
Posted by: TKD | Apr 4, 2008 2:20:21 PM
Jackt51-Get used to us little fella because we're going to Denver. And for the folks on our side, get real used to us because even if Hillary loses there will be no change here on this side. We've only just begun to fight. And this is fun!

Isn't this guy making enough dough from Hillabeans? Or is he high on her unpai debt list.
Well, it's all over but the shouting, now, anyway, but isn't it time for Mark Penn to go back to his day job??
"In December, according to an Associated Press tally, Clinton led Obama by 106 superdelegates. In February, her lead had been cut to 87. As of Thursday, it was 30."
