Clinton's Iran Threat Contradicts Previous Position on Making Such Comments
April 22, 2008 9:50 AM
Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, told Chris Cuomo on GMA this morning that should Iran attack Israel with nuclear weapons, "I want the Iranians to know that if I'm the president, we will attack Iran...In the next 10 years, during which they might foolishly consider launching an attack on Israel, we would be able to totally obliterate them."
The comment seems to contradict previous statements Clinton has made on the subject -- not so much about her willingness to attack Iran, but about the wisdom of discussing such a move.
During a debate on MSNBC last October, moderator Brian Williams asked Clinton what her "red line" would be "concerning when to, if to attack Iran? What would make it crystal-clear in your mind that the United States should attack Iran?"
Clinton at the time wouldn't answer the question, even when pressed by Williams, who had to come back at her after she gave a lengthy non-responsive answer.
"Respectfully, Senator," Williams said, "same question though: Do you have a threshold…?
Clinton would only say, "I want to start diplomacy….I am not going to speculate about when or if they get nuclear weapons."
Her current remarks are quite a contrast from that cautiousness.
Moreover, at the AFL-CIO candidate forum last August after Sens. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, and Chris Dodd, D-Conn., got into a heated exchange about Obama's pledge to attack targets within Pakistan -- with or without the Pakistani government's permission -- should he as president get actionable intelligence of high-value al Qaeda targets in that country.
Clinton at that time scolded her colleagues for having the discussion.
“Well, I do not believe people running for president should engage in hypotheticals," she said. "And it may well be that the strategy we have to pursue on the basis of actionable intelligence -- but remember, we’ve had some real difficult experiences with actionable intelligence -- might lead to a certain action."
Clinton said then that she thinks "it is a very big mistake to telegraph that and to destabilize the Musharraf regime, which is fighting for its life against the Islamic extremists who are in bed with al Qaeda and Taliban. And remember, Pakistan has nuclear weapons. The last thing we want is to have al Qaeda-like followers in charge of Pakistan and having access to nuclear weapons. So you can think big, but remember, you shouldn’t always say everything you think if you’re running for president, because it has consequences across the world. And we don’t need that right now."
So what has changed other than her desire to appear tougher than Obama?
It would seem to me that her threat to Iran is a direct contradiction of her refusal last October to engage in speculation about when she would take military action against Iran, as well as a contradiction of her pish-poshing last August about engaging in foreign policy hypotheticals.

List all the people who've been involved in such an exchange who have later said: "Wow. It's a REALLY good idea to engage in hypotheticals. Totally win-win. If only I had thought of this before."

Is she serious or just desperate for the Jewish vote.
One thing's for sure...foreign policy statements like that must not be political spin. You can't threathen nuclear war one day then deny it the next. Bi-polar people shouldn't be in high places.

Hillary is quite familiar with obliteration...seeing how she does that quite often with the truth.

Couple these statement with her voting FOR the Kyl-Lieberman Amendment, paving the way for a war with Iran and one has to wonder what she really wants. It seems more and more to be to attack Iran and not simply defend Israel. She also said she'd "build a nuclear umbrella" for all of our allies in the region. So, fine, we can all agree on Israel. But what about Saudi Arabia? Are we willing to nuke Iran over Saudi Arabia? People need to pay closer attention to her foreign policy. It's scary. She wants a war with Iran.

She did not say if I am president I will attack Iran. Only if Iran attacked Israel world she approve of it. I am sure and I would hope Senator Obama would do the same.

Lou,
As you know the official Israeli policy is that they don't have nukes. Which is why this false, you attack Israel with nukes, we will nuke you back is being floated.
Secondly, every Presidential campaign has to prove their bona fides of being the Commander in Chief. As in you attack a country we protect, don't expect me to do nothing. A standard that is higher for a woman, if you have any intellectual integrity.
Third, all the countries of the world know what is said for the masses doesn't apply with reality.
Fourth, Iran hasn't attacked another country in hundreds of years. Which makes the whole point moot to people who really know this. And Hillary herself has stated as much just last night to Keith Olbermann, that she didn't think it was like Iran to do such a thing.
Fifth, Israel would have to ask for our assistance, as all of our allies must do. That isn't a change in US policy either.
Sixth, Halliburton sold Iran the centrifuges to enrich the uranium so this whole saber rattling is a ruse from the very beginning. Much like the third point made.
Seventh, if Iran does get bombed by the neo-cons, it will be because of an oil pipeline they want to put through the country into Afghanistan and not nukes.
Eighth, if Iran doesn't comply there is a map redrawing the Middle East in which they lose ground. They are being pinched and are trying to save face. The fact of the matter is that the Bush Family has had ties with Iran since the October Surprise of 1980, Iran/Contra, etc. In which they have benefitted with money, arms, spare parts for military equipment. Just last year the GAO reported that more parts required for the jets that only Iran have, where sold. Indicating another type of deal was struck.
So sorry if the saber rattling on Iran doesn't impress me.

All joking aside, Senator Clinton's foreign policy scares the h*ll out of me . . . her penchant for "shading the truth" coupled with her obsession with appearing "strong" could well prove a lethal combination for this nation. Yet the media continues to whistle by the grave yard talking about flag pins and bitterness. I have seen the enemy, and it is the media.
P.S. When is Senator Clinton going to denounce and reject Ed Rendell for his glowing praise of Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam? Oh yeah, that's just a phony issue that only applies to the black candidate with the funny name . . . my bad.

OBAMA SAID HE WOULD NEGOTIATE WITH IRAN.
CLINTONS SAID SHE WOULD BOMB IRAN.
OBAMA SAID HE WOULD NEGOTIATE WITH IRAN.
CLINTONS SAID SHE WOULD BOMB IRAN.
Sounds like McCain: "BOMB, BOMB, BOMB, IRAN"

Hillary seems to be unpredictable. Her positions change so frequently and create a lot of contradictions. The problem with Hillary is that she wants to prove that she is tougher than her male conterparts. This can lead to irrational decisions like her vote to invade Iraq, or her recent vote to give Bush the green light to attack Iran.

This is unbelievable! And some might what her to answer the phone at 3AM, but do you really want her to have her fingers anywhere near the Button? Couple this with her statements on China......... and we have either someone who will saying anything to get nominated or we have a very dangerous person totally out of touch with the realities of a global world. If she gets elected she will have us in a war within months or (regarding China) completely devastate our economy. Which ever she is, I am not feeling comfortable trusting the future of our country to her judgment.

There is no such formal U.S. policy. A nuclear attack on Israel by anyone in the region would certainly put the commander in chief in the position to request from congress the authorization to a measured response. There are no treaties or guarantees that this response would or should be a counter attack with nuclear weapons. The Israeli's have their own nukes with which to respond. HRC's comments on this subject are irresponsible and stupid.

Your knowledge of Middle East history is astounding. While I do not support all of the thinks that Carter has done recently, he is the president most responsible for offering Israel real peace through the Camp David accord. Nuclear deterrence led to run away defense spending until the Soviet Union went bust.
Sounds allot like the path this country is on right now.

I can hear the attack machines winding this one up right now. Talk about unelectable. If it wasn't for the statewide machines of Ohio, PA and the Democratic National Committee weak stomach this candidate would have been sent packing.

Nuclear deterrance worked during the cold war. Clinton's strategy is a hell of a lot better than Obama's plan. BO is going to sit down and chat with Holocaust-denying Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Maybe he can invite his friends Jimmy Carter and Michael Moore. I'm sure they will have a heart-warming conversation. Maybe Barack will even believe what Ahmadinejad tells him. Then we can all sing kumbaya.
Wake up America! Obama will be the second Carter administration. He is weak and completely unfit for the job.

I have been reading another site and people from PA are writing in and saying the voting machines are not work right or not working at all and that.... OBAMA'S name is not on some ballots...I AM SURE HILLARY AND BILL ARE NOT BEHIND THIS ONE... RIGHT.... ABC can you check into this...

Psst....
The is the same US policy we've always had.
The US will protect Israel, and if some country sends nukes, we send them back.
Even on Keith Olbermann last night she said that she didn't think Iran would attack Israel.
The people who are trying to float this stuff probably don't even know when the last time Iran attacked any country.
Which makes the whole point moot, they are not like Saddam or Israel for that matter, who have attacked their neighbors repeatedly.

Quite frankly, I a more concerned about her offer of the same umbrella to the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Kuwait and others in the region. These countries while on the surface may seem friendly to the U.S., are not anything like us from form of government to idiology. This seems like more of a payback for the Clinton library and the other 109 million reasons. I do not want her near the White House.

Hillary has lied since she started the New York Senate campaign. She has taken over a million dollars from criminals and lied that she didn't when they went to jail. Hillary has also had fraudulent campaigning with money as well. She and Bill made over $110 million dollars and lets not forget that they had tax cuts for the wealthy (including she and Bill). Barack has made some bad decisions and at least he is not lying about his decisions and I can accept the fact that he is willing to admit to wrong doing and Hillary have lie after lie after lie. If it wasn't for Sinbad being on that plane in Bosnia, we would have fallen for the OkeyDoke. Check these links out. story and voters will know that Hillary and Bill are in the illegal drug game and much more and will do anything to get back in. And that is destroy the Dem Party. Let's go PA, NC, IN. We need you! We all love you! We are in this crisis together we can make it out together. I think Barack isn't perfect but he offers the BEST proposal for us. It is whats best for us, we have to start somewhere. BUSH have torn our nation apart and now WE must put it back together. It takes a VILLAGE to get through tough, rough obstacles. So let's give our man a chance to prove himself in the White House and maybe we will realize that we need each other in order to get beyond all the dept we have encountered, even our loved ones in IRAQ. We love you guys and we know you want to come home. We all appreciate you militants for protecting us and our country. YOU ARE THE BADDEST MILITANTS IN THE WORLD!
A Strong Barack Supporter!

Now Hillary is talking about "obliterating Iran." Doesn''t she realize that she it talking about killing millions of innocent men, women and children? She is already partly responsible for the death of about a million Iraqis and the dispossession of millions more. Has she no humanity in her at all?
The only war she has seen is her fictional account of her "corkscrew landing in Bosnia and dodging bullets as she ran across the tarmac.” I believe this woman is truly sick.
GO OBAMA

Hillary is willing to obliterate all the innocent women and children of Iran for the reckless actions of Iran's dictatorship?? That will show them! I didn't realize she was such a warmonger. This is more hawkish than George W. Of course, she would never do it. she is just saying and doing anything and everything she can to get elected. It is the Clinton way. We should see it for what it is. You can always count on the Clintons for one scandalous statement or action after another. Another proven Clinton way. Of course, the whole time they blame it on the right wing republicans and a biased media.

Doug, first of all Clinton went under the same Communist Law professor as Obama!
Also Bork was rejected because he was a Constitutionalist, not a right winger and under Reagan the Senate was controlled by libs that want judges that ignore the constitution ie Activist Judges!!
Do not insult Bork
It is funny how Hilary supporters attack obama and Obama supporters attack Hilary, when both your candidates are Flawed so much. Though Hilary is better then Obama because she at least is not a racist!
yes anyone who plays the race card is a racist!!
