Clinton's Poverty Czar Proposal

April 04, 2008 10:49 AM

Later today in her speech paying tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., at the Mason Temple in Memphis, TN, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, will announce that in her administration she will create a "Poverty Czar" -- "a cabinet level position that will be solely and fully devoted to ending poverty as we know it in America."

When he bowed out of the race, Sen. John Edwards, D-NC, indicated that his endorsement would be strongly tied to a candidate's willingness to push his signature issue.

"They have both pledged to me, and more importantly through me to America, that they will make ending poverty central to their campaign for the presidency," he said. "This is the cause of my life. I now have their commitment to engage in this cause."

But neither Clinton nor Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, has made fighting poverty a major issue on the trail, with a few here exceptions here and there.

Until today.

Yesterday, it should be noted, Martin Luther King III wrote an op-ed in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution calling on Clinton, Obama, and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., "to take a vow that, within the first 100 days in office as commander in chief, he or she will appoint a cabinet-level officer whose responsibility will be to make a measurable impact on eradicating poverty and allow more Americans to move up into our middle class."

The person that would fit into that position nicely (though I would NOT call that position title "poverty Czar")-----would be none other than the fabulous John Edwards.

With the state of the union;

Give me a break; a Czar will not fix the problem. Does the word Czar come from the German NAZI command of years past?

At present this country is about to slide into a depression. Recession was months ago, when George W., and McCain were too much in denial to admit it.

Let's look for a solution: The number one cause and the number one solution I think was spoken by another President, when he stated: "The only thing to FEAR is FEAR itself", the Bush Administration (which will continue with McCain) has offered only FEAR in the last 8 years.

Hillary offered fear with her "Who do you want to answer that phone at 3:00 am".
Solution is what Obama offers: That is unity and fixing the problems here at home
Will bring the economy out of this mess.

This will stop what was produce and designed to make a few people RICH (Halliburton and BIG OIL). No surprise that the President is tied to big oil and the V.P. is tied to Halliburton.

But if you have not been beaten enough, bled enough, by loosing your jobs, loosing your homes, loosing your freedom, loosing your privacy, loosing your civil rights, loosing your right to due process. Then you should vote for McCain or Hillary.
Maybe, I say maybe you will loose enough, bleed enough that you will come to your sense and see that there is a better solution:
That been OBAMA for PRESIDENT.

Are we all not sick-sick of hearing about appointing "a Czar" to take care of this or that problem. What a non-solution! What we have gotten for our problems is "Czars" that get lots of publicity, spend lots of money and provides nothing but a distraction.

If I hear about appointing one more "Czar" I shall "puke-puke-puke".

no-doubt, this is the story of way to many americans across this country, and it should not be.
and hillary is the only one of the three who has a plan to change that.
cover the mother as well as the child

I've heard Hillary Clinton tell the story many times in speeches, and it rarely fails to bring a horrified gasp from the crowd: An uninsured and pregnant Ohio woman, working for minimum wage at a pizza parlor, is turned away from a hospital because she can't come up with $100. The baby dies, and so does the woman. Clinton talks about how this woman haunts her, and how stories like this show the moral imperative--and the urgency--of fixing a badly broken health care system. (You can see a video here.)

Except, it turns out, it didn't happen--at least, apparently, not the way Clinton said it did. There was indeed a tragedy last August in Athens, Ohio, in which a woman, Trina Bachtel, gave birth to a stillborn baby and subsequently died herself. But the New York Times reports this morning that the hospital involved says Bachtel had coverage, and received treatment. And here's the remarkable part, given how important this story has become to the overall narrative of the Clinton candidacy:

Linda M. Weiss, a spokeswoman for the not-for-profit hospital, said the Clinton campaign had never contacted the hospital to check the accuracy of the story, which Mrs. Clinton had first heard from a Meigs County, Ohio, sheriff’s deputy in late February.
A Clinton spokesman, Mo Elleithee, said candidates would frequently retell stories relayed to them, vetting them when possible. “In this case, we did try but were not able to fully vet it,” Mr. Elleithee said. “If the hospital claims it did not happen that way, we respect that.”

Hillary Clinton is far from the first politician to find herself in this kind of embarrassing situation. Remember how hard Al Gore got hit after the first debate in 2000, when it turned out that in his description of the very real problem of overcrowded schools in Sarasota, Fla., he used the wrong verb tense in telling of children who were forced to stand in their classrooms?

What is astounding here is that for all the research that the Clinton campaign has spent scouring and scrubbing the opposition, they didn't put a bit more effort into looking at what their own candidate is saying.

Like I have said before she has a great story telling abilities ..
I wonder how true the Czar will be?

We need to address the issue of poverty since our poor have almost doubled in the 7 years of Bush.

I think this would be a good way to come at the problem in addition to the major adjustments in the economy, employment area, healthcare and education.

Sadly I think that Hillary is putting together her strongest agenda items...the things she believes in most...like health care and gay rights and the poverty agenda...to get Obama to make campaign promises in these areas.

That way if she fails in the primary she can try to force Obama's agenda as president to really try and get some change.

All along at her own expense she has been trying to make him a better candidate. Now she's trying to get him to step up to the plate on issues.

Kind of amazing. Not a "Hail Mary" pass but a different game so late in the primary season.

DON'T BE DUPED !!!

Large numbers of Republicans have been voting for Barack Obama in the DEMOCRATIC primaries, and caucuses from early on. Because they feel he would be a weaker opponent against John McCain. And because they feel that a Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama ticket would be unbeatable. And also because with a Clinton and Obama ticket you are almost 100% certain to get quality, affordable universal health care very soon.

But first, all of you have to make certain that Hillary Clinton takes the democratic nomination and then the Whitehouse. NOW! is the time. THIS! is the moment you have all been working, and waiting for. You can do this America. “Carpe diem” (harvest the day).

I think Hillary Clinton see’s a beautiful world of plenty for all. She is a woman, and a mother. And it’s time America. Do this for your-selves, and your children’s future. You will have to work together on this and be aggressive, relentless, and creative. Americans face an even worse catastrophe ahead than the one you are living through now.

You see, the medical and insurance industry mostly support the republicans with the money they ripped off from you. And they don’t want you to have quality, affordable universal health care. They want to be able to continue to rip you off, and kill you and your children by continuing to deny you life saving medical care that you have already paid for. So they can continue to make more immoral profits for them-selves.

Hillary Clinton has actually won by much larger margins than the vote totals showed. And lost by much smaller vote margins than the vote totals showed. Her delegate count is actually much higher than it shows. And higher than Obama’s. She also leads in the electoral college numbers that you must win to become President in the November national election. HILLARY CLINTON IS ALREADY THE TRUE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE!

As much as 30% of Obama's primary, and caucus votes are Republicans trying to choose the weakest democratic candidate for McCain to run against. These Republicans have been gaming the caucuses where it is easier to vote cheat. This is why Obama has not been able to win the BIG! states primaries. Even with Republican vote cheating help.

Hillary Clinton has been OUT MANNED! OUT GUNNED! and OUT SPENT! 4 and 5 to 1. Yet Obama has only been able to manage a very tenuous, and questionable tie with Hillary Clinton.

If Obama is the democratic nominee for the national election in November he will be slaughtered. Because the Republican vote cheating help will suddenly evaporate. All of this vote fraud and republican manipulation has made Obama falsely look like a much stronger candidate than he really is. YOUNG PEOPLE. DON’T BE DUPED! Think about it. You have the most to lose.

The democratic party needs to fix this outrage. I suggest a Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama ticket. Everyone needs to throw all your support to Hillary Clinton NOW! So you can end this outrage against YOU the voter, and against democracy.

I think Barack Obama has a once in a life time chance to make the ultimate historic gesture for unity, and change in America by accepting Hillary Clinton’s offer as running mate. Such an act now would for ever seal Barack Obama’s place at the top of the list of Americas all time great leaders, and unifiers for all of history.

The democratic party, and the super-delegates have a decision to make. Are the democrats, and the democratic party going to choose the DEMOCRATIC party nominee to fight for the American people. Or are the republicans going to choose the DEMOCRATIC party nominee through vote fraud, and gaming the DEMOCRATIC party primaries, and caucuses.

Fortunately the Clinton’s have been able to hold on against this fraudulent outrage with those repeated dramatic comebacks of Hillary Clinton’s. Only the Clinton’s are that resourceful, and strong. Hillary Clinton is your NOMINEE. They are the best I have ever seen.

“This is not a game” (Hillary Clinton)

Sincerely

jacksmith...

thank you bea,
I think she is always on the mark, and really knows the pulse of the country.
Hillary will be a great president.
people were hoping to find some things in their taxes that would be fodder for more of the rumor mill. they have not.
i heard something today by one of the talking heads that I have been thinking for a while. While obama is receiving the support of black people without the benefit of them completely vetting him. he is not offering them anything-and I am an african american supporter of hillary. he is quite skillfully avoiding the black people-he did not attend the tavis smiley state of the black union. and he did not go to memphis today. I think he is trying to avoid appearing to black. it is a horrible thing to say-but I think it is horrible to appear that way-which he does.

Posted by: jgaw | Apr 4, 2008 8:49:21 PM

HRC did give a moving MLK speech today. I thought her idea of appointing a person to deal with the issue of poverty was a good idea. I also agree with the many other posters here that Obama will announce something similar. He does indeed copy Clinton on policy issues. As for FOX news, I agree that they do give the best overall coverage...even though at times their Republican agenda is apparent they do in fact admit to it. MSN on the otherhand is a disgrace. Matthews and Olberman are disgusting. Why can't they give fair coverage to both Democrats and make an attempt to let voters make up their own minds. I think it is backfiring on them because we are forced to go elsewhere for our news. Once you hear a halfway balanced report you see clearly that Obama will have problems in the general.

Posted by: Bea | Apr 4, 2008 8:30:04 PM

so james and jay, why are we not hearing more about the lack of work obama has done?

Posted by: jgaw | Apr 4, 2008 6:05:03 PM

Jackt51, you are correct this time.. Yes, it is Colin Powell..

How do you think whom AA would vote for if Powell were VP in REPs...

Posted by: True Truth | Apr 4, 2008 4:25:01 PM

How soon will Obama announce his ground breaking idea of a "National Policy Czar" and spin that he would consider John Edwards for the position? Obama has never had an original idea, and his whole campaign is follow Hillary singing "Anything you can do, I can do better, I can't do anything unless I copy you"... Great proposal Hillary. As usual, she offers solutions Obamanations, not Democrat dividing, race baiting speeches.

Posted by: Jackt51 | Apr 4, 2008 3:08:29 PM

Great for her! You watch- the Jr. Senator will follow Clinton's lead shortly and announce something similiar.
Doesn't anyone else notice how much he has copied her so much?
She was the first one to use the phrase" Will bring home a brigade or two a month"..next thing you know he is using the same language.
A good metaphor for all three candidates left standing is thus- if the country were a classroom:
McCain is the Principal
Clinton is the Teacher
Obama is the Student
...I trust that the teacher has the best knowledge of what's going on in the classroom and how to run it!

Posted by: Evelyn | Apr 4, 2008 2:49:45 PM

"More of the same old, same old ideas! How about trying something new!"

Why are people so critical? She has defined a problem and proposed a solution. Perhaps the solution was adopted from someone else's idea, but she recognizes the value in it and as willing to put something on the table to address an issue. What is that "something new" Obama is proposing? The "she can do no right" bit is getting old, especially when you bash her and offer up no contrast from the Obama campaign.

Posted by: LOM | Apr 4, 2008 2:32:47 PM

jozy, you're the one still selling that logic and frankly it's not selling. Frankly, that doctor argument is getting old and it totally does not apply to politics.

Posted by: echo | Apr 4, 2008 2:17:14 PM

TT and echo -

you both need to read about what Obama has done prior to this Nomination cycle.

As for Hillary, her thinking is because she has been married to Bill she is electable. So based on that logic -since my wife and I have been married, and since she is doctor - I guess that makes me qualified to do surguries? Come on down - I'll fix your problem then!

Posted by: jozy | Apr 4, 2008 2:06:10 PM

True Truth, where is Obama's plan?

Just wait, the copier needs to warm up still. Soon enough, you'll be hearing a plan from Obama which is actually a copy of Clinton's.

Posted by: echo | Apr 4, 2008 1:59:48 PM

Where is Obama's plan? What kind of accomplishments has he done to American thru his life?

With his little experience and his little accomplishments, how can he be entitled to be CIC for the most powerful country???

He is unelectable is not because he is black, is because he has no background and experience to earn such honorable title.

If Colin Power runs for president, more people will vote for him... He is much more prominent figure from AA...

Obama is not even one tenth of Power in terms of experience and leadership...

Posted by: True Truth | Apr 4, 2008 1:42:59 PM

I got the feeling that Obama supporters will just die if Edwards throws his support behind Hillary. This irrational behavior of the Obama supporters is very very unhealthy.
They need to get a grip of themselves!

In case you have not figured it out by now, Obama is the weakest of all the candidates still running for the office. His numbers are up there because the media is propping him up for now.

Raising and spending the most money does not mean a thing in the general election. There is no amount of lip stick you put on a pig, it's still a pig.

Posted by: SO1 | Apr 4, 2008 1:34:30 PM

I said in a earlier blog that Edward's would be perfect for FIMA and it could put an enfaces on poverty. If she want a czar, Edward's would be perfect. I also said I have a feeling Edward's wants to endorse Clinton. He needs to do it before PA.

Posted by: Tina D | Apr 4, 2008 1:22:42 PM

So Hilliary's answer is create ANOTHER government program, on top of the myriad of other government programs to curb poverty. Uh, how she will pay for this (printing money) is going to cause inflation which will cause more employers to NOT hire, while devaluing the purchasing power of the money they do have. Typical, empty, vapid "idea", to fix a problem that makes it only worse, and restricts what can be done for you, on the whim of the BIG government BEAST!

Posted by: xyz | Apr 4, 2008 1:15:42 PM

Dear Moderate Dems.
What we have got to face is-the far right has had the media people doing their bidding for a long time
so the dems had to come up with media to counter that-this maybe why we have cnn in obama's coat pocket.
What we mod. dems will need to do is get the independent party up and going strong-and get rid of these partisian
crazies. Moderation in all things is the best way.
in my view what we always get with the far right is war and poverty.
what we always get with the far left
is poverty-poor people get poorer
and the far left does whatever they can to help them....get poorer.

Because, really, the various Drug Czars since that became the "thing to do" have done little to change things, and what they have done has often been draconian in nature!

More of the same old, same old ideas! How about trying something new!

I continue to be puzzled about the media support of obama, while blatantly trashing Clinton and McCain.
Chris Matthews on air, was asked for backup on a comment made by obama, and Matthews'response was that he would check obama's "scripture". Really!
I have also switched to Fox News because I feel they are the most centered in their reporting. Fox News IS NOT IN LOVE WITH OBAMA AND FOX NEWS DOES NOT HAVE VISIONS OF OBAMA AS THE MESSIAH. Fox News sees him for what he is, a politician and nothing more.
It would be a good idea if everyone recognized this.
If obama gets the nomination, it will surely be the end of the democratic party. McCain will win by a landslide. Obama will kill his political career. Clinton will survive and will be offered and very powerful position in Washington and will continue to work for the people of the USA.
Obama is history. Thanks to the media and the cult followers who label obama the saviour.
What a terrible election process and what a terrible candidate. A snake oil salesman that is capturing the minds of the weak. He offers Hope and Change and is not capable of actually making either happen.
What a pathetic nation the USA has become. We allow the media to elect our president, we allow the media to imply he is a holy person, we allow the media to make personal and terrible comments about Geraldine Ferraro, while obama made the exact same statement to the Chicago Tribune several years ago. Where is the fairness in this? Why has it become so acceptable for the obama campaign to turn this race into a racial issue and be allowed to get away with it. Why is it acceptable to allow the media to influence a person's voting thoughts in such a flaunting manner? I am so sick of the media particularly MSNBC, Keith Olbermann and of course the body tingling Chris matthews. Where in the world did this person come from? Are we sure he isn't related to Adolf Hitler?

Obama will be copying her sooner that
48 hours.

It is is so funny.-one of those funnies that you start laughing and end up crying-because so many people have fell for this guy-and think he has the substance to be president.
because he has such a short politcal resume' all his surrogates, the media, and his supporters can do is tear down her history of work.
but her record will always stand.
this woman has done some good work for this country, and no amount trash talking, character destroying by obama surrogates, supporter, and the media will change that.

I'm not a big fan of Hillary but this is an excellent idea. She is obviously trying to appeal to Edwards but it is a throwback to LBJ's War on Poverty and Great Society programs. For those haters out there, just because your candidate didn't think of a good idea doesn't mean it isn't GOOD just grow up already geeze. Oh and SoliderMan, they have been talking about social work for young people, not just Obama. However, I don't understand how their suggestions are anything different from Americorps, Teach for America, etc?

Posted by: Gonzalo | Apr 4, 2008 12:49:01 PM

Hillary is proving everyday that she is on point with what matters to Americans- THE ECOMONY. If Obama ends up the Dem nominee-- you can bet many Clinton supporters will write her name on the ballot and cast their vote for Clinton. How can any American vote for Barack--who attends such a prejudice and un-American church?!! I can not stomach it. The media may try and shove Obama into being the nominee but true Americans will vote otherwise.

Posted by: Patriot | Apr 4, 2008 12:23:52 PM

It's funny, but even though I am a democrat, this election cycle I also started watching Fox (along with the other cable news networks) for the first time. I am not denying they don't have conservative spin, but they are up front about it and present their editorializing as such. MSNBC, on the other hand, has seriously made me sick to my stomach. They have turned into an unabashed Obama propoganda machine.
I also wish there would be more reporting on the Rezko connection. One of Rezko's business partners, Auchi, embezzled from the UN's oil for food program. This week, Auchi severed his ties with Rezko, but earlier, he gave him a $3.5 million loan. Where did that money go? For Obama's house?
I also wish the news would report on Obama's book Dreams of My Father. There are some very worrisome statements he makes in there that cast a different light on his friendships with Wright and others.

Posted by: Tim | Apr 4, 2008 12:23:37 PM

Before appointing a poverty czar, perhaps she should pay her campaign bills to small business, schools, and charity organizations.

By the way, this election is not about Black versus White, it is about American citizens getting involved in government and taking it back from the special interests. I'm a white republican who donated to OBAMA in March. It is only my second donation to a candidate ever (my last was to Senator Fitzgerald (R) of Illinois, another independent thinker who tried to make Washington better during his term). I hope that I can volunteer this year for OBAMA for President.

Posted by: Klangguth | Apr 4, 2008 12:22:40 PM

GS:

I started watching FOX for the first time lately. I have learned more about the candidates than I had a year watching CNN. Also, started watching ABC more since they broke the Wright scandal. Hoping they will do an investigation on the Tony Rezko mess.

On FOX last night, the showed proof from the Chicago Tribune in 2005, where Barack Obama in an interview with the paper, had said himself what Gerldine Ferraro had said about him in her statement.

FOX maybe a little on the right, but they do research the facts, they are fair with air time. FOX is also hard/honest/fair with all three candidated.

Posted by: justin | Apr 4, 2008 12:17:26 PM

Hopefully, she can think of a better title, but this is an excellent idea. As an Edwards supporter in the Iowa caucus, I've been leaning toward Clinton and her views on health care and women's issues, plus the cabinet position to end poverty have won her my support.
I hope John and Elizabeth come out and support her before North Carolina.

About time Hillary get on board.

Obama's been talking about college students doing social work for several months.

Maybe if Hillary's adviser Mark Penn would stop telling foreign governments how to get trade deals passed in Washington we wouldn't be in this mess. Hillary talks about helping America, but behind the scenes, her advisers work to ship jobs away from America.

Posted by: Dan | Apr 4, 2008 11:37:59 AM

As an Edwards supporter, I think he will endorse Barack Obama, because that the trend in the party. The DNC, Dean, Pelosi, has all but declared Obama the winner.

However, if John Edwards really cared about poverty as started. He would endorse Hillary Clinton. Their agendas and plan are the same. Their health care model were the same.

Frankly, if you want to see the effects of poverty, come to Barack Obama district in Chicago. Barack never did anything here in Chicago to combat poverty here. I am sure his polished campaign will say otherwise. But Barack failure as a community orgainzer.

It will be interesting to see if Mr. Edwards will endorse either of them. I will be quite surprised if he will endorse Mrs. Clinton. Several of her opponents (all of them men) have endorsed a fellow man.

This is ultimately men vs woman race whatever it is claimed to be: such as "it is not against women, but against this woman" etc.

Mr. B. Obama seemed to be a toy used by "big white political boys" to maintain their power and control.

Let someone who has lived in poverty be the link to fight against it - not someone who's husband makes 47mil a year.

THis has been an issue that Hillary Clitnon has talked about before doing. Nothing new, it's a part of her Katrina rebuilding plan. To place one person in charge to combat poverty in America. It's just a shame it doesn't get more attention by the media.

Will John Edwards be that person? Yes, I if she is elected. If Barack Obama is elected he'll be Attorny General. John Edwards is holding out for the highest bid.

Just like Bill Richardson did. James Carville is a very smart man, his metaphor exposed why Bill Richardson was so "inspired" to stage direction an endorsement for Barack Obama. Richardson dropped out of the race with campagin debt. Barack Obama has donated the most money to the super delegates than any candidate. Politicains are "inspired" to endorse by thier wallets! I have a vision... $$$$$$!

Edwards doesn't want to be the "Poverty Czar" as much as he cares about that issue.... I think the AG role is more apt if anything at all...and Obama's administration is a much better fit for him.

At this stage of the game she woud say anything and all this she has promised what in hell is it going to cost us we don't make 41 mil a year??????

Edwards will probably be the Poverty Czar as he annouced yesterday that he was not interested in a V.P. slot, but a position that would further his cause, whether in be in or out of government.

A great idea. It wasn't hers but a great idea none the less.

...and what exactly will the "Poverty Czar" do exactly...different than what we don't already have in this country.

Appointing a "czar" does not mean anything more than hiring another level of bureaucracy.

It is our weakest point as democrats...we establish committees and "czars" that suck up more budget but can be redundant or pointless without details and programs...

Details and Programs first...then czars and committees to implement them.
