Democratic Congressional Candidate: Obama? Obama Who?

April 30, 2008 10:07 AM

In North Mississippi, Democratic congressional candidate Travis Childers has been hammered by Republicans for ties to Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, in THIS AD from the National Republican Congressional Committee and THIS AD from Childers' opponent -- "When Obama's pastor cursed America blaming us for 9/11 Childers said nothing," the ad says.

Now Childers is pushing back -- by acting as if he's never even heard of Obama.

In a new TV ad launching today, Childers says his family "has heard the lies and attacks linking me to politicians I don't know and have never even met," the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports.

And Memphis's WREG-TV has an interesting report in which Childers distances himself quite a bit from Mr. Obama. Watch HERE.

"Senator Obama hasn't endorsed my candidacy," Childers says. "I have not been in contact with his campaign nor has he been in contact with mine."

Obama's campaign has tried to help Childers, as you can see on Obama's website.

Obama- Zero Experience Matters

Harvard Lawyer?

No.

He never argued a single case in a court of law.

Constitutional Law Professor?

Not according to the U of Chicago.

Obama was a Lecturer who never wrote a single article. Lecturers normally write articles too, but not Obama.

Illinois Legislator?

Not so much. He only passed legislation one year....and it was all written by other people. Again, he took credit for other people's hard work and moved on.

Senator?

Where's the beef? He was in the Senate one year before he started running for President.

Obama's never done anything, for any community. His preacher was a black leader and Obama tossed him out of his train once he was done using him.

Obama has no experience and no character. His church is not what he described and he just threw his own minister out like yesterday's garbage.

We are at war, and in the middle of a financial crisis. We need leadership not a pumped up resume, a lot of hot gas, and a treacherous ability to toss out his own chosen horrible associates.

Posted by: Experience Matters | May 3, 2008 10:07:04 PM

Obama would have you rip 2 stars from our beautiful American flag.

Obama won't even count active duty military from Florida or Michigan.

How can a guy who wants the country to salute a 48 star flag and throws his pretty crazy preacher to the dogs expect us to respect him?

God Bless our 50 United States of America.

He should have stood by his preacher too. He sat in those pews, gave that man $22,000, copied his sermon for his best selling book, used him for his 2006 speech at the DNC, and signed an oath to his value system.

He had that preacher marry him and baptise his kids.

Reverend Wright was a mess......but he was Obama's mess for 20 years.

Stand by your mess. I don't know if it's worse that he's so disloyal or that he chose such a church to begin with.

Either way. His character defaults are worse than Reverend Wright's by far....stand by Your Man Obama.

Posted by: Florida and Michigan Count | May 3, 2008 9:56:15 PM

What's worse, the guy who would have a preacher like Louis Farrakhan? Or a guy who would dispose of that preacher after using him for 20 years? Don't vote for either guy.

Obama went on and on about his minister forever. He copycated his sermon for one of his books and said I'm a Christian and you can tell from my church.

Now the minister turns out to have a strange belief system with a lot of terrible things to say about almost everybody.

What's worse....a guy who would turn traitor on his own minister of 20 years. A guy who he was calling his "uncle" and his "mentor" one week and then totally disowns him the next?

Obama tossed his crazy uncle out of the train after he got done using him.

If Obama could make someone feel bad for Reverend Farrakhan, there is something really traitorous and wrong about Obama.

I find it funny that none of the local politicians on the Dem/lib side and none of the Dem/lib Senators/congressman want to be associated with neither Obama or Clinton.

remember when the campaigning began, the Dem/libs stated they were afraid of Clinton winning the nomination for the libs because it would hurt them!

Pretty bad that the Dems/Lib politicians do not like their own front runners! So why should we!!

rs,
Edward Said wasn't a PLO leader. He was a professor of literature. Are the attacks on Obama really going to remain this stupid?

Posted by: rf | May 1, 2008 11:27:13 AM

This is silly -- the Mississippi 1st is a heavily conservative district that went for G.W. Bush in '04 by 30 points. Of course Travis Childers is distancing himself from Sen. Obama. He would be distancing himself from ANY national Democratic figure (save maybe someone like fmr. La. Sen. John Breaux or Miss. Rep. Gene Taylor -- hardly liberal boogeymen).

Posted by: Brendan | May 1, 2008 11:11:23 AM

They said Bill Clinton couldn't be elected. They said the same thing about JFK. If Clinton is the nominee there will be an army of freelance Hillary-haters waiting to step up to the plate to do the grunt work. She's had almost no negative press coverage recently because the GOP knows she's unlikely to be the nominee. Don't be deluded into thinking she's somehow immune from attack.

Posted by: Barbara Holmes | May 1, 2008 10:48:20 AM

Childers? Obama? Ooh! Ooh! I LOVE playing Six Degrees of Separation!!! Those Republicans always play the best Party games! Can we do Charades next? Please? Please? I want Bush to dress up in that flight jacket again. And Karaoke - we HAVE to do Karaoke! Everyone wants to see McCain do that "Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb bomb Iran" thing again. Then Pin the Tail on the Donkey. This is such a FUN Party! Do we get cake and ice cream and balloons too?

Posted by: Tom J | May 1, 2008 2:19:25 AM

We all know Obama made critical errors. But, he did not:
- sponsor unregulated trade deals(NAFTA)
-- massive unemployment
- authorize war in Iraq
-- 4000 brave soldiers died
and on on ...
He instead, oppose NAFTA and Iraq war.
OBAMA is the true patriot.

HRC CAN NOT BE TRUSTED.

Posted by: Jeff | May 1, 2008 1:50:27 AM

sounds like childers is smarter than a lot of politicians. he knows the sure way to lose an election is to be associated with obama.

if dean, pelosi, and the rest of the crooked "leaders" of the dem party don't figure this out and make obama withdraw, we'll not only have a republican white house but also a republican house and a republican senate.

there are only two good things about that - obama would be finished forever and pelosi would lose her speakership.

The RNC has purchased half-million dollars worth of negative ads so far. They are going to swift-boating democratic candidates all over the country, the ads feature Wright and Obama. We may lose the presidency and both houses because of Obama.

Posted by: tww | Apr 30, 2008 5:12:41 PM

If Obama doesn't run for President, he still will have relationship with Rev.Wright.

Posted by: Ati | Apr 30, 2008 4:58:34 PM

Q: why few Clinton attack ads?

A: why spend money when it's not needed?
OBAMA is the current leader and easy target - Although the tactic is not a good one & easily tossed aside.

I'd suggest a cleaner fight at this point - since mudslinging really doesn't do much good - especially when it doesn't have much to go on.

We really need to get focused on why we need to vote for someone not why not to vote for someone. The issues please - that are affecting most, if not all of us - Democrat and Republican and Independent [aka the rest of us not in the first two].

We need to look for what people bring to the table to help us - not this extra fluff. How one chooses to worship / or not - and who they're getting the message from - and what someone they know did during the candidate's childhood isn't important today - people change.

Lets move forward, not stay mired in the mud - lets look at the proposed changes and how we might play a role in helping to bring them about. The changes that need to be made are not all going to come from government. Many need to be changed from the people - taking an active role - pushing for those changes - in insurance, in work, in what we purchase.

Push Walmart and others not to buy from China and third world countries - don't shop there - get others to do the same - or only but american goods they do sell. write to walmart and get them to change their buying habits. The same goes for Target and other places you may buy things from.

If you have problems with oil - become a shareholder and buy gas from only one vendor. Organize / Join forces with others to do the same. Make your voices heard. (When they make profits, you'll at least get some of it back in dividends.)

All talk and no action - is part if what got us here. Complaining with no action is a waste of time and energy. Talk is cheap, action speaks louder than words.

A revolution is at hand - it can be peaceful - and orderly. Many have taken the first step toward being heard - register and vote. There are many other ways [non-destructive means] to get things done - make a change.

Change is also usually painful for most things. It usually comes at a price. What are you willing to do to make change happen? What are you willing to give up to make things happen that you feel need to change?

As a past Democratic President said, while campaigning for president ...
Don't ask what the country can do for you .... ask what you can do to improve the conditions you have problems with?

at least, Melissa, some people are OPEN to change..... like HILLARY CLINTON!

It's called "GROWING" and Hillary has.... into a wonderfully strong, bright, knowledgeable, woman who can think on her toes and speak without benefit of teleprompter.

I value these traits and I will vote for her because of them. But before coming to this conclusion, I gave my choices a lot of consideration.... so that I am SURE that, for me, Hillary is definitely the RIGHT CHOICE!!!!!

Posted by: questioner | Apr 30, 2008 3:24:58 PM

Melissa -

1. Are you the same person you were a few years ago? Most people do change over time, depending on what they have to deal with/witness. It's convenient for you to say HRC's changes are an act, but I'd rather believe that people (especially those going through the kind of crucible HRC did) do change.

2. Promises / proposals are defined according to a set of conditions. If the conditions change, the outcome will of course change. Holding jobs/Buffalo against HRC ignores the impact of funding/priorities in a Republican administration/Congress, ignores domestic and global economic conditions, and ignores reality. It's not as if she put her programs in place and they didn't accomplish the goals; she couldn't put them all in place because of circumstances beyond her control.

3. A one-sided perspective on health care reform is particularly galling. HRC made mistakes (which she's acknowledged) but republicans/lobbyists also spent fair amount of time and money lining up in fierce opposition. Blame HRC if you want, but also blame everyone else involved who put their interests above the "general welfare". At least she made an effort, put up a fight, and -when it didn't work - worked on smaller but related objectives and kept plugging away at the issue.

Imagine, the US nation is being led towards the abyss by a bungling bush; and the focus is on the HARMLESS RHETORIC of an old Black man?
All because of America's racist obsession!

All any intelligent mind has to ask is, "How really harmful can mere rhetoric of Right be to ANY American?" Who is bruised?

It's not like Mr Right is making threats of harm against the nation or against individual Americans?

911 demonstrates to the world that Americans will lull itself to sleep with non-issues when real threat to the nation arises.

Americans will be fast asleep, lights out, "when the bridegroom cometh"

Then you were never going to vote Dem in the first place, no matter who was on the ticket.

Lets face it folks, even if you think Obama is a secret commie fascist mutant space-man terrorist from Iran, and Clinton is well... I don't think some of the words I'd use would make it past the moderators... they've got nothing on the Slimefest 08 that is the current Republican party.

A vote for the Republicans is a vote to continue the Iraq war ad infinitim, to rob from the middle class and give to the rich, to keep Americans uninsured so long as it turns a profit for some fat shareholders, I could go on...

Tell me, honestly, do you think your preferred candidate stands for any of those things I just said? Do you honestly think the Democrat you hate so much stands for any of these things?

I despise the Clintons with the white hot intensity of a thousand exploding suns, but it'll be a cold day in hell before I'll vote Republican. TOTALLY the lesser of two evils there...

Doug - Chelsea's starting salary at McKinsey five years ago was in the neighborhood of $100K --- not unusual for a Stanford grad with a masters from Oxford going to work at a global consulting firm.

As for the usual litany of "illegal" things -- suggest your time may be better spent petitioning Congress for your share of the $70 million spent by Starr/Ray be reimbursed since clearly they were so incompetent as to head up a 6-yr investigation which turned up a horny president and a blue dress ... and nothing else! Don't forget to throw in some xtra $ for all the congressional investigations which similarly turned up ... nothing!

So Doug are you impersonating David Shuster now? Did you know sexism is bad? Just like racism is bad? Sexism seems to be okay with Obama supporters, just not sex out of marriage. And having friends that bomb the pentagon and police stations, and hurting the policemen working inside the police stations when the bomb goes off is okay. It's hard to understand what is okay in Obama world. One day Wright is okay, the next day, Wright is not okay. Obama is a flip flopper of major proportions. If Obama drops out of the race now, before the Rezko trial really gets interesting, he may save the democratic party from appearing more corrupt than the Republicans. But Obama won't do that - it's all about Obama. Not the American people.

Posted by: barbi | Apr 30, 2008 2:23:03 PM

Melissa - You brought up the war issue, I was merely pointing out all the ramifications of "getting out now." Since you clearly aren't prepared to discuss it, we'll drop it. If you're worried about the economy, tell me how Obama's proposed plans (identified costs exceed HRC's by about $100 billion) will be paid for? What's he giving up? What's highest priority so we know what the probable tradeoffs will be?

(PS - on the "screw em" comment - pls do remember that people in the room do remember the conversation differently, and that even the person who first wrote about it notes that:

-- He pointed out that everyone in that room back in '95 was angry about the Republicans taking over Congress. The only person who wasn't angry was Bill, who (as the HuffPo piece also explains) talked about the importance of reaching out to white southerners.
-- He noted that the Hillary from '94-'95 was a MUCH different person from the Hillary in Bill's second term. She had moved from ideological liberal to a pragmatic leader. He says his 2001 book, in fact, has a chapter on this transformation.
-- He is a Hillary Clinton supporter and has given Clinton money.

Thanks for sending out an alert about Obama.

We are living and working in Kenya for almost twelve years now and know his family (tribe) well. They are the ones who were behind the recent Presidential election chaos here.

Thousands of people have been displaced by election violence (over 350,000) and I don’t know the last count of the dead.

Obama under “friends of Obama” gave almost a million dollars to the opposition campaign who just happened to be his cousin, Raila Odinga, who is a socialist trained in East Germany. He has been trying to bring Kenya down for years and the last president threw him in prison for trying to subvert this country!

Posted by: questioner | Apr 30, 2008 2:21:31 PM

News that Sean Hannity will next bring up Obama's connections to Aiham Alsammarae, who has connections in Iraq with Rezko, and Rashid Khalidi, a former PLO leader. Also, Obama was connected with Edward Said, another PLO leader, in the late 1990's. The longer Obama stays in this race, the worse he makes it for ALL Democrats running for office. Nice to see that Michelle is out campaigning with him today! Politics of Political Expediency!!!

Posted by: rs | Apr 30, 2008 2:17:43 PM

Chelsea has proven herself to be as manipulative as her parents. She refuses to answer tough questions. Refuses to talk to the media. You can't have it both ways. You can't go out there and pimp your mother and not answer questions.

BTW, how did she get a hedge fund job that pays her $200K a year? Is that hedge fund guy a Clinton donor and fundraiser? Well that's like an extra $200K in illegal campaign contributions in my mind.

But that's not surprising. The Clintons always do illegal things: Whitewater, Travelgate, Filegate, Cattle Futures, Madison S&L, Rose Law firm conflicts of interest, Paula Jones, Monica Lewinsky, etc.

"The American government was "pretty much clueless on counter insurgency" in the first year of the war" Wolfowitz and his neocon allies were the American government. They planned and executed this disaster. Does he plan to apologize to the families of the dead? Doesn't this merit at least as much attention as where someone went to church?

Lois, in California:

I could not agree more. Obama was not vetted. The Clintons stated this a very long time ago and no one listened. Now the runoff from the DNC's tragic Obama fixation is hurting other candidates. This is just plain wrong.

Poor Childers is now being attacked over Rev. Wright!! Awful!!! Shame on the DNC for not doing their job.

I am sooo angry about this mess. I blame Obama and his campaign for even running this time. The DNC has enough problems. He is an untested, unvetted candidate. He may be refreshing but new to the game. He should have waited four years until he cleaned up some questionable associations and past affiliations before his decision. He just jumped head first into the run for president. Now, the Democratic Party is in jeaoparty of losing in the November if he is the nominee. I am a Hillary supporter but I'm a realist.

Posted by: MELISSA | Apr 30, 2008 1:38:35 PM

Melissa.... you're still bootstrapping on the McCain/economy question but not worth arguing about it. But, you didn't really answer the hard questions did you? You can conflate troops in Iraq/bin laden, but doesn't change the facts that there are concrete issues in Iraq that need to be considered. If not by the public, then by the Commander in Chief (to be!).

Posted by: Sandy | Apr 30, 2008 1:28:48 PM

If Hillary truly had a better chance against the Republicans than Obama, don't you think they'd be trying to damage her right now to tip the nomination to Obama? But they're not. They're being COMPLETELY SILENT on Hillary, and directly targeting attacks on Obama almost exclusively in the contested remaining primary states.

If this was about the General election, they'd be more nation-wide, and if they thought Hillary was more of a threat than Obama, she'd be getting hit right now.

And of course down-ticket folks are going to brace themselves against these attacks. Do you really think it would be any different with the shoe on the other foot?

Wake up. Obviously the Repubs have chosen their preferred candidate to compete against, a resounding Republican vote for Clinton that grows louder the more silent they are about her.

Remember, you are democrats. No republican should decide your candidate for you, and you shouldn't be buying into their tactics. Think!

Posted by: fontapa | Apr 30, 2008 1:24:25 PM

Sandy ,
no he said he didnt know economy because they had talked about it because the view claimed he never said that and it was proven he did... either way he worded it he still doesnt know economy and it shows when he wants to keep going with what is going on with the war in iraq - and it shows he knows little about the safety of americans on top of that- you dont think that other countries are going to let us have a endless amount of money we can get from them do you? do you think that with our men dying over in iraq is helping our stand against bin laden? do you think that a attack on us from bin laden would be easily resolved with our troops as it is now? they are tired and we have no money to launch a attack on bin laden and it only gets worse every day!!! and those are the things people are worried about.

Posted by: MELISSA | Apr 30, 2008 1:22:18 PM

Oh how we get amnesia during campaigns. The Clinton adminstration has produced more convicted felons and scandal than any other administration in history. Even as we speak they are being sued in the California Courts for their associations and fraud. I don't expect anybody to put any names or faces to the Clinton's past but pick up a history book and turn off your damn TV.

Melissa,

It is politics. Every one may lie and every one is "politically correct" unless the lies are caught...

It is democracy. Every one has his/her own right to support his/her own candidates based his/her own favor and knowledge. Unfortunately, at least 50% of dems won't share with your view so far...and currently it is not good trend for Obama either..

"Sen. Barack Obama continued accepting donations from oil company executives and employees last month even as he aired ads in which he stated he took no oil company money, his campaign finance reports show." yes EXECUTIVES AND EMPLOYEES - but either way that would be one against obama vs a million for clinton.. not really a victory!!

Melissa =

Actually what McCain has said is that he knows economics less than defense and national security, and that he's not as knowledgeable about the intricacies of economic relationships as economists and experts. Not quite saying he doesn't know the economy.

As for "getting out of Iraq", both Obama and HRC are twisting the truth to some extent and acknowledging that circumstances on the ground (in Iraq and the ME as a whole) will dictate final decisions. Also, they're glossing over the fact that it takes time to get troops/materiel out of a country -- it's not a few months, more like a few years. So you don't really know what they will do.

Of all of them, McCain has come closest to saying his true position - we'll stay there as long as it takes to get the job we need done done. No pandering timetables, no fake promises.

People who say "we need to get out of Iraq as soon as possible" should also consider what that means. Some troops/some equipment, all troops/equipment? Take out the Army and Marines, but leave ships in the Gulf and Air Force resources overhead? What's the world's reaction likely to be if the US pulls out and Iraq dissolves into civil war? What about Iran - let them go in or keep enough troops to keep that from happening? What will the ripple effect of civil war be on neighbors such as Turkey (NATO!) and Kuwait, or others (and on the price of oil then?) What about the "world's largest embassy" -- pull those people or leave them w/no protection?

You seem to have all the answers -- go ahead, share.

This is just the beginning the RNC has purchased half-million dollars worth of ads so far about democratic candidates around the country. Rev. Wright is the biggest disaster that has ever happened to the democrats.

This story broke on 23 April. It's among Obama-Axelrod's truth troubles somewhat eclipsed by the media blitz on Obama's on-again, off-again relationship with Jeremiah Wright. Alice Palmer's another one.

"Sen. Barack Obama continued accepting donations from oil company executives and employees last month even as he aired ads in which he stated he took no oil company money, his campaign finance reports show."

"Barack Obama still takes in oil money:

Vickie ,
thats what they said about bill clinton when he was running for the white house... only time will tell i guess- im just saying dont snub your nose at obama and claim that hillary is soooo much better because she isnt she is worse !

Posted by: MELISSA | Apr 30, 2008 1:09:08 PM

Melissa,

Hillary has a better chance of implementing her policies than does Obama. SHE can beat McCain. Obama can't. You can't implement your policies if you can't win the election and make it to the WH. Obama has no chance of winning.

Posted by: Vickie | Apr 30, 2008 1:06:49 PM

how did he lie about knowing bill ayers, he worked with him on a board and was friendly with him he wasnt charged with anything, was he? second of all that really doesnt work for hillary because her and her husband pardoned 2 of them that were convicted of a crime! next..

where is the proof that he said i have never taken oil money ? where is the proof that he took it?

Here are two: Obama's long-term relationship with Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn, not taking oil money.

Aside from his "church" troubles, that is.

church troubles are a bogus claim ..

now how about the money that hillary got from paul? how about her saying she didnt have anything to do with the "travelgate" how about her not admitting to asking the military to not look at her when they walked down the hall and she passed them? how about her failure to get jobs in buffalo? how about her health care reform failure? how about bosnia lie , soccer lie, who she was named after lie, the woman who died with out insurance lie
her not being for nafta lie, her being the first one against the war lie, not to mention the i didnt know my husband was doing other women lie....

they were not the whole story and it wasnt as bad as it seemed , wright is out to get obama now and he is going pretty far to do it.. what about the endorsement for clinton of the nut job who said that the widows of 911 were trying to get on t.v. they loved the fact that they lost a husband because that gave them the spot light...

HE is more for AA rights than others- i will give HIM that but what is in it for anyone else? HE is already showing Americans that HE has no problem telling them a made up story! HE doesn't feel bad about HIS lies and HE will lie when ever needed and sometimes when its not needed just for kicks...
IT IS NOT WRIGHT THAT BO is WEAK!

Sandy ,
first of all most americans want out of the war and are still wondering about bin laden, mccain doesn't know economy he said it himself.. he clearly doesn't understand that this war is putting us at risk not only economically but with a defense against bin laden- you think he has what forgave us ? no he is waiting for us to get all the money we can get from other countries use it for the Iraq war he is waiting until our troops are tired or killed in iraq and we are weak and then he wants to come in with the last blow to finish us off!! we need out of this war NOW we need to fix our economy we need to give our troops a small rest plan well and go after bin laden....

People don't want to be associated with Obama anymore.

Simple as that.

Whether he denounced Wright or not --- Obama is damaged.

The Republicans are ganging up on him not because he is a strong candidate--- ( they want you to think that he is stronger cause he is easier to cream than Hillary in the GE )
( doesn't help Hillary that Obama has more ( *** Bought *** )delegates---

If you are a Republican Candidate--- you want to go head to head with Obama. Cause winning is the name of the game.

And I also DOUBT that Rev. Wright would stay quiet. He is retired. He has a book coming out. He is beloved by his parishioners. He will speak again. And People will give him the attention he wants.

Will be get another speech from Obama again?

They hid in the basement to pray on the day Obama announced his bid for presidency, so that no one would see Rev.Wright. This was in the Bill Moyers interview.
