Did DOJ Dismiss a Lawyer Because of a Rumor She's a Lesbian?
April 02, 2008 6:50 PM
Leslie Hagen, former liaison between the US Justice Department and a committee on Native American issues, received "outstanding" marks on her final job evaluation. But amidst rumors she's a lesbian, she was told her contract would not be renewed.
The Inspector General of the U.S. Justice Department is looking into the matter, reports Ari Shapiro at National Public Radio.
The senior counsel for then-Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, Monica Goodling, "had a particular interest in Hagen's duties," NPR reports. "A few months before Hagen was let go, according to one e-mail, Goodling removed part of Hagen's job portfolio — the part dealing with child exploitation and abuse."

Occidental College is NOT a junior college. You owe us all an apology.

Are we at all suprised? Remember that it is still completely legal in 33 states to fire someone based on sexual orientation. Why is it that state government is not held to the same standards as our federal government?

To Jamie, Hillary failed her DC bar exam.
McCain's IQ was tested at 133 in the Navy. That means it was tested in the top 2 percent range.
Obama went to a junior college and got into columbia because of affirmative action. Obama got average grades at columbia and then got into harvard because of affirmative action.
Hillary could never have passed the tests to become a fighter pilot. She is terrible mathemicatically. She didn't even know when her campaign was going broke. Look at the balance sheet of her campaign it is a complete mess. The Clinton campaign is committing credit fraud by billing credit cards for more donations without permission and ruining the credit for those people

Jerome,
I think someone should ask Heffelfinger, about why he thinks Hagen was fired.

The Republicans oust qualified Ivy-leaguers by hiring Monica Goodling...a student from PAT ROBERTSON'S televangelist "university"... which is a 4th tier college. (by the way a 4 tier college is the lowest educational ranking there is)
I love McCain, but we dont need another stupid president like Bush (who got into Harvard only because of his father's wealth and status) We need highly intelligent people like Hillary or Obama, who graduated at the very TOP of their class at Yale and Harvard Law.

Unfortunately, yarrr, this isn't NPR, but ABC. And we're talking about Hagen's dismissal, not Hefflingers.
Any thoughts on that?

Each one raved about her work.

From Wikipedia's article on Tom Heffelfinger.
""""""""
Heffelfinger was angry at the Department of Justice for putting him on a list for dismissal,[5] for, as Monica Goodling testified, his preoccupation with Indian affairs issues.[6] Heffelfinger strongly defended his work on Indian affairs issues: "The fact that some allegedly responsible official or officials in Washington at main Justice now believe that I should have been removed for spending too much time focused on the public safety of Native Americans is outrageous, and it's shameful."[7]
Circumstantial evidence suggests that Heffelfinger was targeted for dismissal by the Department of Justice as a consequence of his positions on tribal voting in Minnesota.[8]Heffelfinger's appearance on potential dismissal lists at the Department of Justice apparently fits a pattern associating the dismissed attorneys and voting issues.[9] Bradley Schlozman's name appears in this case, as a result of the political sensitivity of the tribal voting issue. Schlozman is a central figure to a voting and elections controversy in Missouri.

Way to ignore the elephant in the room NPR.

Jake,
Thank you for highlighting these LGBT stories. The gay soldier and now this one. it's important that these don't get lost. And that Goodling removed the portfolio parts dealing with children either means that she and the administration have made the age-old error of equating LGBT people with pedophilia, or they feared the public would. Either way it's sad. We lose great great people and their skills when we remove them out of fear, uncomfortability, or ignorance.
Keep up the good work.

where is the story about Mukasey using a pre-9/11 call that we knew about regardign the attack to justify an expansion of FISA powers? there was more than enough ability then to track the call and get a warrant, so what call? What did the Bush administration know when prior to 9/11 and why didn't they do anythign about it?
