From the Fact Check Desk: Former President Bill Clinton's Defense of His Wife's Bosnia Sniper-Fire Story

April 10, 2008 9:35 PM

Former President Bill Clinton offered this bit of revisionist history of his wife's Bosnia story in Jasper, Ind., today, one riddled with a veritable sniper fire of errors -- ones necessitating footnotes.

Watch the former President's misstatement-riddled explanation for his wife HERE.

"She took a terrible beating in the press for a few days," he said, per ABC News' Sarah Amos, "because she was exhausted at 11 o'clock at night (1) and she started talking about Bosnia and she misstated the circumstances under which she landed in Bosnia. (2)

"Did you all see all that? And oh, they acted like she was practically Mata Hari," he said -- referring to the Dutch exotic dancer accused by the French of spying for the Germans and executed by a firing squad during World War I -- "like she was making up all this stuff.

"And then the president of Bosnia said, 'Well, it was quite dangerous when she came, there were snipers in the hills all around,' (3) And then Gen. Wes Clarke, who was there trying to make the peace among the Bosnians, said 'Yeah, it was dangerous, let me remind you three of the Americans who were on my peace-keeping team were killed because they had to take a dangerous road 'cause they couldn't go the regular way.'

"And she had to go up into the cockpit with our daughter, in a bullet-proof area, and all the other people had to sit on their bullet-proof flak jackets (4) because it was dangerous.  So she immediately (5) said 'OK, I misremembered that, they didn't cancel the welcoming ceremony, but it was pretty dangerous.' "

In Boonville, Ind., also today, he told a different version, saying his wife, "one time late at night (1) when she was exhausted, she misstated and immediately (5) apologized (6) for it, what happened to her in Bosnia in 1995. (7) Did y'all see all that? Oh, they blew it up. Let me just tell you.

"The president of Bosnia and Gen. Wesley Clark -- who was there making peace where we'd lost three peacekeepers who had to ride on a dangerous mountain road because it was too dangerous to go the regular, safe way -- both defended her because they pointed out that when her plane landed in Bosnia, she had to go up to the bulletproof part of the plane, in the front. Everybody else had to put their flak jackets underneath the seat (4) in case they got shot at. And everywhere they went they were covered by Apache helicopters.

"So they just abbreviated the arrival ceremony. Now I say that because what really has mattered is that even then she was interested in our troops. And I think she was the first First Lady since Eleanor Roosevelt to go into a combat zone. (8) And you woulda thought, you know, that she'd robbed a bank the way they carried on about this."

(1) Her most glaringly wrong telling of the tale, on March 17, 2008, was in the morning.
(2) She actually told versions of the story several times. (And none was at night.)
(3) In an e-mail to journalist Eric Jansson, former acting Bosnian president Ejup Ganic said "we didn't expect snipers," though, "we still believed that some positions on the hills were occupied by radical Serbs, so I was worried about the overall safety."
(4) Not according to the pilot Colonel William "Goose" Changose (Ret.), who said, "nobody under my watch has ever directed anyone to sit on their flak jackets. ... We do not direct people to sit on their flak jackets."
(5) It wasn't immediate at all -- it was 11 days later, first in an editorial board meeting with the Philadelphia Inquirer/Philadelphia Daily News, then later in a press availability.
(6) She never apologized.
(7) It was 1996, not 1995.
(8) He qualified it with "I think," but then-first lady Pat Nixon went to a combat zone in Saigon, Vietnam, in July 1969.

One thing we must recognize: Both Clintons are monstrous liars; but while this is a fact, we must acknowledge that they only lie when they are awake - as far as we know. And usually they tell one lie at a time. Chelsea is a fast learner: She originally supported Hillary's lie about the "harrowing experience" in Bosnia. She was a little slow, but she caught up quickly.

The flak she's getting from the Bosnia story is not making a mountain out of a mole hill. Hillary LIED!! She told a blatant lie to make herself look good and she got caught! Both the Clintons are pathological liars. They will say or do anything to get back in the White House.I don't understand why people can't see that.

GO HILLARY !!!
Media - please stop making a mountain out of a mole-hill - that is what Bill Clinton was trying to tell you! This is the exact problem. We need to treat all 3 candidates with respect and report fairly - the media is really trashing Hillary!
Fox is the only media that reports the real issues on Obama and his radical "friends" - his background and judgment are just far too questionable to be President of the United States!

The Clintons have always been pathological liars. They lie so much that they cannot distinguish the lies from the truth. If you lie enough, eventually you will get caught. We want that in the White House?

I realize some of these are extremely nit-picky and only arguably misstaements, but it's excellent to see that you are now going to start holding the candidates to this kind of scrutiny and standard. I especially can't wait to see what you make of some of the McCain doozies. You'll no doubt be up in the high double digits for each paragraph. Just out of curiosity, when can we expect your first dissection of this kind for the other candidates and their surrogates?

as far as lies how about this WHOPPER - obama is not african american THAT IS RIGHT OBAMA IS NOT AFRICAN AMERICAN - he is ARAB AMERICAN - he lied to get into harvard - he is lying now -

Just how does this work? Obama is in PA for less than a month and he has already figured out the psyche of working class people.

He spent 20+years in his church but he had no idea that Pastor Wright held the beliefs that he espoused!

When OBAMA figures out his CHURCH --- then he can give us his opinion about working class people in Pennsylvania and other states!

I guess he thinks the people of PA are so stupid and slow they can't remember they had a job during the Clinton administration.

Folks, please remember that this man Bill Clinton will not only be the First Spouse if Hillary is president, their supporters expect that Bill will guide Hillary through situations in the White House. She has also indicated that he will be given the post of creating good will among the nations of the world toward the United States. I am sad to say this but he sounds disoriented when he talks. Do we really want this two-some in Washington leading our country?

Question to "typical": who is "WE" that you are "Demanding" on behalf? You mean Senator Clinton supporters?
Last night I checked, in Zimbabwe, Mogabe; who thinks he is "entitled to the presidency"; is demanding the same things.
Should we bow now when Sen Clinton appears?

Bill doesn't want her to lose, his butt's on the line. It's either the White House or divorce. He'll be cleaned out.

He just talks too much. No need to be so cynical.

Posted by: Juro | Apr 11, 2008 6:07:08 PM

I had resisted jumping to the conclusion that deep down he wants her to lose (as others have suggested), but the evidence is now just too great. A skilled politician -- which Clinton clearly is -- would never say anything so devastating about his wife the candidate unless he really, truly was working to undermine her campaign.

We demand an END to Media Bias!

We demand an END to Hate Speech!

We demand an END to Prejudice against Hillary!

We demand Florida & Michigan votes COUNT as cast!

We demand an END to Rigging of the Democratic Primary!

I support Senator Hillary Clinton for President as she embraces our struggles as her struggles. Her many years of experience, strength of character, accomplishments on behalf of the people, courage, compassion and willingness to fight for every American, are indeed qualities of a candidate who is ready to lead, and someone who offers solutions that are real and able to pass the tests.

...thanks bloggers, from the above, it could be simply summed up that the EXPERIENCE(s) is/are obviously so HUGE !

H & C (if I print their names it won't be posted) from Fox news, tried to cover the Rev. Wright story last year and the media refused to cover it. Now they won't cover the Underground Weatherman Story. Which H & C have been covering the last two nights. The media is in Obamas pocket and it's really sad that they throw these stories up over and over to try and deflect from the real issue. You never see them quoting Michelle Obama's every word. Especially since they reported her saying She was proud of America for the first time in her adult life and people were really ticked. Do you want a first lady who isn't proud of her country going around the world representing us. How do you think other countries will view her when they know she has made such statements.

Posted by: Annie | Apr 11, 2008 5:01:15 PM

This guy is a moron! Now he's told America that Hillary is 60 and if she gets exhausted at night, she can't remember things. What's going to happen to us if the phone rings at 3 a.m.? How the hell is she going to know what's happening at 3 a.m.?

Posted by: Betty | Apr 11, 2008 4:53:02 PM

I tried to post a comment and they wouldn't print it because I said Fox was more fair when reporting on Obama then the rest of the media. I also said that Fox has covered for the last two nights, the story about Obama being linked to The Underground Weatherman and this story being a screen because the media doesn't want to report anything negative about Obama.

Poster Sean O'Brien said something I agree with, Bill and the "subconscious...". No matter how much love Bill proclaims for Hillary, he continues to abuse her. For years he's abused her trust by being unfaithful. Now, knowing how she wants to be Pres more than anything in life, he gets out there and resurrects one of her most volatile errors, Bosnia, making it worse. Why would he do that? Because he is sicker than she is and he obviously likes to hurt her. Pennsylvania, do us a favor. Shut these 2 Clinton has-been narcissists down. Oh ya, treat yourself to watching Hillary "cackle" when she was asked about Bill's $800,000 fees going back to her campaign and a possible conflict of interest...it's a winner!!!

Bill's famous, "I never had sex with that woman", is proof positive how much they lie. Mark my words, if she gets into the White House (again) we'll NEVER know for sure what's true and what's a big lie. Is this what we want of a president?

Posted by: makemyday2day | Apr 11, 2008 2:01:21 PM

To me a lie has to be significant, not a mere misstatement of facts. Suppose Bill had said, "She had her yellow dress on" when, in fact, it was blue, it wouldn't bother me as it might still offend someone else who thinks all lies are equal and to be despised without exception.

For me, lying about consensual sex no matter how in-your-face still falls in the realm of lies that I can dismiss as unimportant without reflecting on a person's integrity. Clearly, makemyday doesn't feel that way.

On the other hand, I would find very much problematic a lie along the lines of "Saddam is developing WMDs" when this is a rationale for going to war. That would be an example of a significant lie, one I would not tolerate. Again, I know there are people who would disagree.

WHAT WAS ALSO INSULTING TO PEOPLES INTELEGENCE, IS THE FACT THAT HILLARY WENT ON J LENO SHOW TRYING TO PUT THE SPIN on this BOSNIA Lie, to make it seems LIKE WE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ARE THE CRAZY ONES that need to see a Psychologist. Because WHAT we SEE and HEAR IS NOT WHAT WE REALLY SEE and heard!

YOU CAN NEVER BET ON GETTING THE ENTIRE TRUTH FROM THIS Couple. I REGRET VOTING FOR HER IN Florida! THEY NEED TO GO, NOW!!

Posted by: Easton | Apr 11, 2008 4:15:26 PM

Add another inaccuracy to the list: The three Americans killed on that mountain were diplomats, not peacekeepers. They were there before the Dayton Peace Agreement, which paved the way for the introduction of the US-led peacekeeping force.
