Is Hillary's Much-Maligned Hospital Story Fundamentally True?
April 07, 2008 3:14 PM
The New York Times had a real attention-grabbing story over the weekend indicating that Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, had been irritating an Ohio hospital by telling a false story about a poor, pregnant woman denied health care.
“The hospital said, ‘Well, you don’t have insurance,'" Clinton said. "She said, ‘No, I don’t.’ They said, ‘Well, we can’t see you until you give $100.’ She said, ‘Where am I going to get $100?' The next time she came back to the hospital, she came in an ambulance,” Mrs. Clinton continued. “She was in distress. The doctors and the nurses worked on her and couldn’t save the baby.”
The Times reported that the woman in question was Trina Bachtel.
"Since Ms. Bachtel’s baby died at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital, the story implicitly and inaccurately accuses that hospital of turning her away, said Ms. (Linda) Weiss, the spokeswoman for O’Bleness Memorial said. Instead, the O’Bleness health care system treated her, both at the hospital and at the affiliated River Rose Obstetrics and Gynecology practice, Ms. Weiss said."
Because O'Bleness so harsly assailed the story, it has been treated like the whole story Clinton told was false, and it has fed into a meme -- started by her Bosnia sniper tale -- of her being less than truthful.
But a closer examination of the story Clinton was originally told indicates that while Clinton erred slightly in relaying the tragic tale, that doesn't mean it's not fundamentally true. On that, the jury is still out.
**
Clinton was first told the story of Trina Bachtel by an Ohio sheriff’s deputy, Bryan Holman.
The website NoQuaterUSA today pointed out what Holman's full story was -- and his full story is significant.
On Youtube one can watch the video of Holman telling Clinton the story.
“I’d like to tell you the story of a young woman I know that didn’t have health insurance," he says. "She worked in a little pizza place around here and she was pregnant worked for minimum wage. She went to the hospital. And the hospital told her she needed $100 up front, which she didn’t have of course didn’t make a lot of money . So they had billed her a couple of times for it. And uh, after getting pregnant she went back, like I say, she went back again, they told her she needed $100 she didn’t have . So they refused to see her because she had a bill and stuff and been there before."
Here's the key: Holman then tells Clinton that Bachtel (whom he doesn't name) then went to another hospital -- and that one would presumably be O'Bleness Memorial.
"So she went to another local hospital," he says. "And they seen her and stopped her labor and told her to come back in two days. Well, before she got back within those two days her baby died. So they life-flighted her to Co - to a hospital in Columbus and within 15 days she died. And they come to find out that they had misdiagnosed what the problem was. And it was a smaller hospital, didn’t have the needs to take care of what she needed at that time."
In other words, the hospital that denied Bachtel the coverage was not O'Bleness Memorial.
The larger point, says Holman to Clinton: "her family and them think that if she'd had good insurance and stuff and she was taken care of at the first hospital of course that had the medical means to take care of her that her and her baby of course would still be here. Its just you know the health insurance thing really needs to be addressed for people who you know work for minimum wage and different things.”
After which Clinton says, "I hear so many stories like that. People without insurance are more likely to be die than people with insurance."
**
The (Ohio) Daily Sentinel on August 5, 2007, printed an obituary for Trina Bachtel's stillborn son, Tray Dean Hutton, who was stillborn on August 1, 2007 at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens, Ohio.
Another Senitenl obit shows that Bachtel herself died at OSU Medical Center in Columbus.
The first question is what was the first hospital Trina Bachtel went to? It wasn't O'Bleness -- but Clinton never said it was. She told the story imprecisely -- sloppily, even -- but that doesn't make its general point untrue.
The second question is why was Bachtel denied medical care at that first hospital?
I'm trying to find out more about this story -- it's not always easy when health records are involved, not to mention a grieving family who may already have some issues with the media.
But I will try, and report back to you what I find out.

To questioner:
If your comment is directed toward my post, you'll notice I said NOTHING ABOUT RACE. Look it up in a dictionary. Bigot does not equal Racist. The group of bigots in this world is a much larger group of people. And the fascists who call Rev. Wright un-american are not racists either, they're fascists.
But of course to you anything about Obama is racist. "See what I mean?"
What apology do you want to hear? I'm sorry that you hate Obama.

There is so much hatred expressed by posters here toward Obama. Obama doesn't need to apologize for Rev. Wright. The reverend is an honorable American using his first amendment right to criticize American foreign policy. The chickens have come home to roost. This is true. Yet the "patriots" in this country want to crucify Obama for associating with Rev. Wright because they are offended that anyone would suggest America is responsible for how we are perceived in the world. The fascists claiming "America is great" are no different than the radicals claiming "Allah is great". Both are claim righteousness in killing the other side. Thank God for Obama, a principled and intellegent man who tells the truth even when the bigots in this country can't stand to hear it. He has revealed more about him than any other candidate, but the bigots in this blog haven't bothered to read his books or do real research. 30 second soundbites taken out of context do just fine for these ignorant folk. This country is filled with spiritually sick and wounded people. God help us.

i notice that none of those knowledgeable folk who said that Hillary lied on this issue, have apologized.
This, pretty much is the story of her campaign.
Someone would tell a tale, another would embellish it, someone else would embroider the embellishments.
None would retract it.
Now if the story were about B O, however, somehow "race" would enter the premises and his followers would become apoplectic, noisily defenseive and slanderously Offensive.
Which is why I say,:
GIVE 'EM HELL, HILLARY!!!!

Laura, to the contrary, it shows alot about OBAMA that Hillary supporters will vote for McCain instead of him. No one trusts or respects him enough to vote for him. With McCain we know what we are getting, with Obama we do not know one thing true about him. The unknown is sometimes scarier than the known. If Hillary is not the Dem candidate then more than, it is estimated 80% of her supporters will vote for McCain, not out of spite but because he (unfortunately) is a better candidate than Obama!

Dear Tired.....12:31:13. Funny how you can twist the one year time line. It's alittle more difficult to twist the four year Selma time line, isn't it?

Hillary Clinton is a compulsive liar. I do not want a president who is a compulsive liar. She lies and smiles when she lies to the american people as if lying to the american people come naturally. She lied about almost dying and about a woman being denied health care. She lied about sniper fire is disrespectful to our troops and to the voters who loved one's were killed. Stop lying enough is enough. If she can lie about possible death and smile while lying to th american people than that is scary. She is a compulsive liar and that is a fact. If you vote for Hillary than you must think it is okay to lie to the american people.

The only shame I see in this story is that Hillary told of just ONE person's experience ... even if there is some controversy over the accuracy of the details.
I'd gladly share with her my story for use all across the country, because I'm extremely angry about how a corrupt claims adjuster was allowed to make fraudulent statements to deny my Workers' Comp coverage after I was injured in the line of duty as a volunteer firefighter. Why was he not punished for committing this felony? Because Governor Schwarzenegger is determined to shift the financial burden from employers to injured workers.
Abuses are taking place every day throughout our nation. And people are being permanently injured every day by medical personnel who make mistakes. Hillary absolutely should call attention to the problems until the day comes that we have no more abuses and mistakes in our healthcare system. Our lives depend on it.

Dsmn staight, this is a true story!
Unfortunately, some people refuse to recognize the truth..
It just points up so poignantly the NEED for universal health care.
Obama's family is covered by great health care.
So is Hillary's.
But WE are not! and that's why I'm voting for Clinton.
GIVE 'EM HELL, HILLARY!!!!!

If you reallu want to know what type of president Obama would be just take a look at Mass. Gov. Deval Patrick,Axelrods first mess he sold to the public. Patrick is Obama and Obam is Patrick they read the same speaches "Word Don't Matter". Patric is totally out of his element he is not capable of the job of Gov. He just made a huge book deal when he can't get a bill passed in senate. The entire state of Mass. is having buyers regret. The presidency is too imprtant a job to take a chance on someone Axelrod sells to you. I wish ABC would do a story on how poorly Patrick is doing in Mass and conect the dots to see how poorly Obama would do as president.

It would not be possible for the campaign to "vett" this story because of HIPPA laws. In fact, I agree with the poster who said that the hospital itself may have broken some of those same laws when it released the name of the victim.
What does it matter about the details? Don't we all know a story like this one?

So Clinton's story is true? Well I guess the media "misspoke."

To those who are saying "she should have checked it out . . ."
Just TRY to get verified information on anyone since Patient Confidentiality went into effect. My daughter cannot even find out my room number when I am in the hospital - and she has power of attorney as clearly stated on my chart. It would not be possible (in fact, might even violate laws, depending on the state) for a political campaign to "validate" this story from anyone but a family member or friend. This was a sheriff's deputy making a public statement in the community where it happened! Why wouldn't she believe him?????

I work as a physician in a Catholic hospital in California. We have a law here that all pregnant women are entitled to coverage by MEDI-CAL for their pregnacy and delivery if they are not covered by insurance. This also applies to undocumented aliens who come from outside the USA to have their babies. There also is a law that no one who presents to an emergency room can be refused treatment for non payment. I am not sure of the laws in other states, but if a patient comes to our hospital with a problem, they must be seen and evaluated by a physician. The case in Ohio was tragic, but I think the real facts need to be discovered before we condemn the health care system. I feel people should have to bear some responsibility for the cost of their own health care. If the woman who died did not even have $100 to pay the hospital, how was she going to support a newborn baby?
The lack of health insurance is certainly a big problem for many people with large medical bills, but I am concerned about the government creating another huge entitlement program without the means of funding it. If you look at the Medicare and Medicaid system we have now, they are cutting back reimbursement every year and still running up huge deficits. It is so bad that many physicians are going to stop accepting Medicare and Medicaid soon because it doesn't even cover your overhead expenses.
Unfortunately, our healthcare system is very complex and has a lot of vested interests who don't want to change it. It may be that some safety net system for those who have no coverage is possible without making drastic changes, but it will be quite expensive and will obviously require some funding source.
I think the next President should appoint a committee of people to study the problem and propose several options for a solution. Then these proposals can be debated and agreed to by the American People and Congress with a plan for implementation and a stable source of funding. Unfortunately, I am not optimistic that this will ever take place.

Obama's comments led conservatives and media commentators to question his patriotism.
First Obama kicked his American flag pin to the curb. Now Obama has a new round of patriotism problems. Wait until you hear what the White House hopeful didn't do during the singing of the national anthem.
Dont get mad because the statement came out of Obama's mouth on how he doesn't like or will ever wear the pin.
Obama will be crushed if the nomonee!

NO NEED FOR FOREIGN POLICY FROM VP?
Last night at a fundraiser in San Francisco, Obama took a question on what he's looking for in a running mate. "I would like somebody who knows about a bunch of stuff that I'm not as expert on," he said
"Ironically, this is an area--foreign policy is the area where I am probably most confident"
"It's ironic because this is supposedly the place where experience is most needed to be Commander-in-Chief. Experience in Washington is not knowledge of the world. This I know. When Senator Clinton brags 'I've met leaders from eighty countries'--I know what those trips are like! I've been on them.
I've researched Hillary's trips, my estimation of her foreign travels is that they were sometimes quite a bit more than a dance, a briefing and a tour. What Obama's remarks last night in San Francisco reveal, however, is his self-confidence--to the point of cockiness--right now. This is exactly the same demeanor on display last week in Pennsylvania.

In October, Obama told Iowa television station KCRG that he decided to stop wearing a U.S. flag lapel pin during the run-up to the Iraq war because it had become "a substitute for, I think, true patriotism."
"I decided I won't wear that pin on my chest. Instead, I'm going to try to tell the American people what I believe will make this country great and, hopefully, that will be a testimony to my patriotism," Obama said.
Michelle Obama told an audience in Milwaukee, "For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country.
This is how Michelle and Obama think of our Country!! Do we really need more people to hate our country?

No, Hill's story was false. Sloppy reporting. According to the young woman's aunt, she did not go to the local hospital, because she owed them money and feared they would demand $100. She went to the distant hospital, which cared for her.
Hill's conclusion was: "People without insurance are more likely to die than people with insurance." But her story doesn't bolster that point. Even the insured run up unpaid bills. If the woman had gone to the local facility with pre-eclampsia, I suspect they would have worked out an arrangement about the unpaid balance, especially since she now has insurance and a job.
Use your head, Jake. This is not "fundamentally true." It's a tragic anecdote irrelevant to Hill's point.

It is really sad that this young lady died at 35. However, she did not die because she did not have health insurance. She had it and the hospital tried her. So how could the HRC's story fundamentally true?
Posted by: abc | Apr 8, 2008 1:38:11 PM
Why is it so hard to believe that a hospital would let someone die? It happens quite often unfortunately, especially if one is without medical insurance. It must have been a year or so ago - about the woman who lay bleeding on a hospital emergency room floor and no one attended to her - they just let her lay and bleed to death. Some hospitals have become a place to go to die, not to go to get better. And it is mostly because of lack of insurance. They are just as greedy as the oil companies, worshiping the almighty dollar. They don't give a hoot about people.
