McCain Stumbles on Shiites v. Sunnis….Again
April 09, 2008 10:19 AM
During the Senate Armed Services Committee hearing yesterday, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., in his questioning of General David Petraeus, stumbled again on whether Al Qaeda is Sunni or Shi'ite.
MCCAIN: Do you still view al Qaeda in Iraq as a major threat?
PETRAEUS: It is still a major threat, though it is certainly not as major a threat as it was say 15 months ago.
MCCAIN: Certainly not an obscure sect of the Shi’ites overall...
PETREAUS: No.
MCCAIN: …or Sunnis or anybody else.
It took just minutes before the Democrats posted the video on Youtube.
Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean issued a statement saying, "As John McCain continues to get the basic facts on the ground in Iraq wrong, he makes it clear to the American people that he will continue the open-ended commitment to fighting President Bush's war in Iraq. One hundred years in Iraq is not a plan. We all honor the service and sacrifices of our brave troops and their families, who have done everything that has been asked of them every step of the way. Honoring their service means bringing this war to a responsible end, and the only way to do that is to elect a Democratic president in November."
(This comes roughly a month after McCain had a similar misspeaking moment, which you can watch HERE or read about in our blog post from March 18, "Err Jordan.")
The McCain campaign issued a statement acknowledging that “In the course of having a serious dialogue with our military leadership in Iraq about how Americans can formulate success going forward, John McCain stumbled on his words and corrected them immediately."
A couple years ago we did a Good Morning America report on the key government officials -- including House Intelligence Committee chairman Silvestre Reyes, D-Texas -- who didn't know basic facts about the Muslim world. (Reyes thought that al Qaeda was both Sunni and Shiite, but predominantly Shiite. Ugh.)
McCain's people say this is not remotely like that, this is just misspeaking, not ignorance. What do you think?

McCain is the most honest of the three people running. But I'm finally learning a little about where he wants to take the country and it's sounds like more of the same if not worse. He wants tax cuts for corporations, including big oil; major changes to health insurance, including those of us who already have insurance; a "win" in Iraq, which can only mean that we spend more American lives to build an Islamic government; views on domestic issues that don't square with what most Americans believe, and a little faking with the evangelicals. I like that he's sometimes brutally honest, but I just don't like his policies and I don't want my daughter to have to pay for them for the rest of her life.

Ihave always advocated that presidential candidates should have a psychological evaluation.McCAIN( killed abel) is living proof that it is very much needed.

Obama stumbled on Iraq/Iran....I'm sure he knows the difference....perhaps it's all about alliteration

This is only fair to discuss, along with 100 Years, because the other two would have been pilloried for these constant mistakes. These are not misstatements. They could be lack of knowledge, which trashes the 'experience' angle McCain once had.

The impetus behind McCain's war making urges are clear, ignorance of the facts and a possibly senile mind steeped in bigotry. Let's not forget that he "hated the gooks."
Sunnis, Shi'ites, doesn't matter...right Mr. McCain? All that matters is that we send our servicemen to kill them. After all, they're all Muslims, my friends.
God help the United States of America. We need it.

good lord, spock! How old are you 90?
Your views on war are archaic at best.
I remember going to Vietnam because if we didn't fight them there, we'd be fighting the "sanpans coming up the Rio Grande!!!" The domino theory may be alive and well in your brain, but it was disproven many moons ago!
Support the Troops! Bring them HOME!!!
Obama 2008 -- Yes, WE CAN!!!

I hope it's High School b/c one can go to college become challenged and grad. with honors!....Anyway, regarding the story, the guy is old. A couple of more stumbles and his age will become revelant as it should

McCain...
Do we really need a President who finished 894th out of 899 in his graduating class?
I don't think so. It would SO nice to have, just for a change, some intelligence in the White House.

I am not a McCain supporter, but the first time he made the mistake, I didn't take it seriously - everyone misspeaks. But, right now, the count of the number of times he has made this error is at FIVE. You would think he would have been careful about this after having Joe Lieberman correct him in front of hordes of cameras. Imagine if Obama or Clinton made this same error FIVE times and that too, in front of Petraeus and their other colleagues. McCain would be hollering from the rooftops about their lack of knowledge and experince, blah, blah. He SHOULD NOT be held to a different standard.

Jason you said that McCain's son has served in Irak and he went there 8 times but still he cannot make a difference between shia and sunni, between AlQaeda and Iran. What a shame, can he learn at all? His brain should be too old for him to learn anything anymore. Next time he will be viiting Irak he should invite his beloved friend "Hill the Bosnian General" so she could hlep him to understand the difference between Suni-Shia-AlQaeda-Iran-Snipers. God bless America and God bless Obama. OBAMA08.

McCain is a great American and a soldier of a different era. His shoot first and then think about what was said is becoming very common. When he stacks up against the an agile and sharp democratic nominee like Obama and enters a one on one debate he will certainly not shine and then it will become apparent to his most closest supporters that he is not going to be the best president for 2009 and onwards. He looks like the person who people will say after he has gone that he was not in his prime when he reached his seventies. McCain will serve well as a senator and should continue that role.

Obama stumbles on "Iraq/Iran" No one takes note! No stories are written...no youtubes are played...Some of us saw it...some of us read it . before you hid it...
We are not yet a tabloid democracy. Read and research... then ask yourslf what they are selling you today...If it's Obama you decide!

As far as the media goes with Obama, the FEC should investigate it because they are campaigning for Obama, they actually go out of their way to denounce the negative truth about Obama while going out of their way to lie about McCain!!
The MSM is a failure the worse is MSNBC followed by NBC, CBS, CNN, New York times which are traitors, majority of papers in California, Massachusetts.
So please tingling up my leg!!

Ed S - From above it looks like that is from the error a month ago!
Do you even know what is going on in Iraq, we are letting them choose their own government, they voted it in. We are there now so it does not collapse by the forces of Iran, and Al Qeada before they can walk.
At this point we have met a majority of all the benchmarks set forth. there "congress" has done more then ours.
The Libs in our congress sit by doing unconstitutional investigations instead of coming up with a workable free market plan to help the economy, why is that it is because the libs want a recession or depression to occur!
Ed S - Is not it the object to achieve Victory!! McCain has more of an understanding then any lib.
Obama does not even know the difference between Iraq and Iran or Pakistan and India, Terrorists and Hardworking Americans So please!!
Appeasement and talking to our enemies does not work, look back thru Carter and Clinton years!
Peace thru Strength is the only way!!
We did not start this war but by God's Will we will win it!
Every lib congressman and protester has blood on their hands, as is proven with the Harvard Study that every time a lib congressman/senator opened their mouth violence increased.
Note in comparing to Vietnam - A north Vietmanese General was interviewed he stated that after the tent offensive the North was ready to give up, but reports of America media and congress (libs at the time) saying America lost kept the North going.
Today in Iraq the enemy is listening and is trying to defeat us politically the same way in Vietnam!
Iran Ayatollah says Obama is their man!!

Rosie O'Donnell yesterday said she was afraid of "the little Republican" (Elizabeth Hasselbeck)..."she scared me."
Rosie O'Donnell months ago on The View:
"Don't fear the terrorists...they're mothers and fathers too"
This is why in the end, Americans keep returning to the GOP in droves (despite the indoctrination by the mainstream media)...
Democrats don't know who the enemy is, and they haven't in a long, long time.
McCain knows who the enemy is. Democrats like Hillary & Obama do not.
McCain is your next president. Get use to it.

WestCoastMessenger, the media has been for Obama from day one. They'll report a few things to make it look "fair" but they won't report the big things, the things that could really damage Barack. And if you think it's bad now, just wait till the general election campaigning starts.
But McCain will still win. Americans are gullible for a while, but they're not stupid enough to vote in a radical leftwing Black Panter-esque black guy. They're just not.

Who cares? I'm more concerned about Obama not answering the questions about the 2nd amendment and where he stands.
Posted by: Jo | Apr 9, 2008 2:39:10 PM
I should vote for Obama because McCain doesn't know the difference between a SUNNI or a SHIITE, but what about Obama's camp desperately trying to label McCain as a "warmonger"?... I'll wait for the debates.

Anyone that tries to prop up the CIA line that Shias and Sunnis will never work together is just plain ignorant ...
Ever heard of Hamas ...
From Wiki "Hamas (حركة حماس; acronym: حركة المقاومة الاسلامية, or Harakat al-Muqawama al-Islamiyya or "Islamic Resistance Movement"[1]) is a Palestinian Sunni Islamist[2][3] militant organization"
From Wiki "According to the US State Department, the group is funded by Iran"
So according to the US State Department Shia Iran funds Sunni Hamas ...
Please keep trying to prop up that lie folks ...

If the press is now going to go after McCain like this, sparing no mercy, in a similar manner as they have treated Hillary Clinton, it speaks volumes about how they'v comparatively handled Barack Obama with kid gloves.
What about Barack? Where's the vetting. What is the press afraid of?
