McCain Stumbles on Shiites v. Sunnis….Again

April 09, 2008 10:19 AM

During the Senate Armed Services Committee hearing yesterday, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., in his questioning of General David Petraeus, stumbled again on whether Al Qaeda is Sunni or Shi'ite.

MCCAIN: Do you still view al Qaeda in Iraq as a major threat?

PETRAEUS: It is still a major threat, though it is certainly not as major a threat as it was say 15 months ago.

MCCAIN: Certainly not an obscure sect of the Shi’ites overall...

PETREAUS: No.

MCCAIN: …or Sunnis or anybody else.

It took just minutes before the Democrats posted the video on Youtube.

Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean issued a statement saying, "As John McCain continues to get the basic facts on the ground in Iraq wrong, he makes it clear to the American people that he will continue the open-ended commitment to fighting President Bush's war in Iraq. One hundred years in Iraq is not a plan. We all honor the service and sacrifices of our brave troops and their families, who have done everything that has been asked of them every step of the way. Honoring their service means bringing this war to a responsible end, and the only way to do that is to elect a Democratic president in November."

(This comes roughly a month after McCain had a similar misspeaking moment, which you can watch HERE or read about in our blog post from March 18, "Err Jordan.")

The McCain campaign issued a statement acknowledging that “In the course of having a serious dialogue with our military leadership in Iraq about how Americans can formulate success going forward, John McCain stumbled on his words and corrected them immediately."

A couple years ago we did a Good Morning America report on the key government officials -- including House Intelligence Committee chairman Silvestre Reyes, D-Texas -- who didn't know basic facts about the Muslim world. (Reyes thought that al Qaeda was both Sunni and Shiite, but predominantly Shiite. Ugh.)

McCain's people say this is not remotely like that, this is just misspeaking, not ignorance. What do you think?

Can someone tell me what service and branch McCians son or sons are in. Not to take away from the servie the render to the country, but the fact is that his sons are out of harms wauy on a naval ship or even flying high above the skies where no one is shooting at them. The reason I bring this up is that I do not disrespect their committment to the US and the service of our country, but if you are going to use it in a political speech to further your political position as someone who knows what they are talking about, then let's tell the whole story. The men on the ground would think differently about those not on the ground and how much they are really puting into the fight. Please do not spin the "My sons are in Iraq". So please someone tell me that I am wrong and they are actually on the ground fighting the good fight. (Ex-Infantryman)

"How many average Americans can tell off the top of their head the difference between a SHIITE OR SUNNI MUSLIM or which one is part of AL QAEDA?

(Average American who DOES NOT ALWAYS WATCH/READ the news!)"

McCain's not your "average American" - he's a PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE, for Chrissake! And not only that, he's running as someone who understands the "Islamofascist" threat more than anyone else. Seems Howard Dean was right, McCain needs to master the basic facts of the situation before questioning Obama's or Hillary's readiness to lead. The two of them are 100x more ready to lead than "To the Gates of Hell" McCain.

Jason:

What are you smoking!

McCain has clearly cast HIMSELF as WARMONGER -- he voted FOR the bill approving Waterboarding as acceptable. He voted for action against IRAN! He was the one who made the comment "bombbombbomb, bombbomb Iran" and wants to see us stay in Iraq for 100 years!

But to the main question, I don't think that an "all those guys" comment can truly be called "corrected them immediately." And I don't think he "stumbled" so much as "bumbled."

John McCain would be a disaster for this country as President. He has made it clear over the last two years that he is a big fan of Dubya. Four years ago, I couldn't say this, but McCain's own actions have shown it.

That wasn't McCain's choice. That was the military's choice. He said he would have had no protection if it was up to him.

McCain is the one who chose not to have secret service protect him. McCain went with no security on his last trip to the middle east and europe.

Obama took secret service in May of last year while McCain still hasn't taken it.

Obama and Clinton have cost taxpayers over a 100 million with their protection. McCain is saving the taxpayers money.

To Owen,

I knew a lot about NAFAT-gate too.

Everyone has his or her own opinion, just like you and me.

Get the impression that if it were left up to ABC, they'd just anoint Obama as king, no questions asked. No need for any of this election silliness.

Owen McCain hates war. McCain voted against keeping troops in Lebanon.

McCain is not a neocon warmonger like the dems are distorting him to be. Neocons hate McCain and his anti torture stance.

McCain said he will withdraw responsibly and have the iraqis patrolling the roads and dealing with the insurgency.

Obama and Clinton both want to keep troops guarding the embassy and going after al queda.

McCain will have rules of engagements that protect our troops.

McCain will withdraw responsibly by handing over areas to the iraqis and our troops coming home.

McCain is one candidate who can unify our country by bringing our troops home responsibly. It is like Nixon going to China.

So you support Hillary and I'm an independent cool. Have you seen this? Read the extracts from the ABC news website below.
If only Penn were the end of the story. Guess who else supports the Colombia pact? Politico's Ben Smith scares up the quote (translated from Spanish) from June 2005: "I am in favor of the free trade agreement," said former President Bill Clinton (the one strategist who cannot be demoted).

This is where the (thick) rubber of the Clinton's financial entanglements hits the (icy) road of presidential politics. Huffington Post reports that Bill Clinton was paid $800,000 in 2005 by a group "tasked with bringing investment to the country and educating world leaders about the Colombia's business opportunities."

The Clinton campaign confirms the former president's support for the trade deal. "The acknowledgment adds new hurdles to the New York senator's bid to woo Democratic voters in Pennsylvania and elsewhere who believe free trade agreements have eliminated thousands of U.S. jobs," the AP's Charles Babington writes.
And it's not the only area where Bill Clinton, again, has his wife's campaign off-message. ABC's Jake Tapper reports that Clinton last year advised Steven Spielberg not to sever ties with the Beijing Olympics; Sen. Clinton this week made headlines by calling on President Bush to boycott the opening ceremonies.
Clinton's = Deceit. After all these info. The Solutions Express should be called the Double Speak Express, end of story. Hope you're still laughing, cause I am Hahahahahaha !!!!

If Sen. McCain knows who America is fighting in Iraq, he should prove it. Isn't five mistakes enough? He is clueless period. We need our $12b spent every month in America right here, right now. We need our troops back in America, these people are human and have families. McCain is nothing but a Cyborg.

Posted by: Owen | Apr 9, 2008 1:52:34 PM

Jason said "McCain has been to Iraq 8 times. He was breifed on each trip." I remember one of those trips. He was talking about how safe things were in Iraq, about how one could walk around the market place. And to prove it, he did walk around the market place: In full body armor, surrounded by a troup of soldiers, with two helecopers flying cover overhead. Yeah, sounds like he understands things perfectly.

Mr. McCain comment implies lack of knowledge. His personal history, however, from the Naval Academy to present, suggests an intelligent, highly skilled and disciplined soldier and civil servant. It would be reasonable to consider his fifty plus years of service as critically as the recent mistakes, errors or whatever preferred descriptive adjective(s) may apply. I don't have much confidence in Republicans in general, but I could vote for Mr. McCain. I don't think I could vote for either of the two Democrats. The party seems to have lost it's way in recent years.

You saw Obama's performance on FOX NEWS and it made you laugh, I guess you support McCain, right? I have news for you, you can vote McCain and see if you'll have a job (if you work) or pay your mortgage (if your parents don't pay your bills).
You guys expect too much from someone who doesn't have a clue about the economy. If you haven't noticed, this is the fifth time Sen. McCain has given the wrong info on who America is fighting in Iraq.
On the Democratic side, you have two strong candidates with good plans for the economy and with plans to withdraw our tired troops. On the Republican side, you have a Cyborg who wants to spend $12b a month in Iraq and let Americans die everyday. We need our $12b dollars a month right here, right now. Haven't we suffered enough? How many Americans need to die before we call it a day? It's because of this war that we can't stand up to China, we have borrowed so much money and we have to pay it back. Don't let McCain fool u guys, he is clueless and he belongs in a home period

Posted by: Owen | Apr 9, 2008 1:45:57 PM

At least McCain doesn't have any trouble identifying who the enemy is.

Jimmy Carter is preparing to meet with the leader of Hamas, an organization that the U.S. government considers one of the leading terrorist threats in the world.

Obama rejects trade with the President of Colombia and seems to like Hugo Chavez much better and can't wait to talk with that idiot in Iran.

If Obama gets elected our troubles will be coming home to roost.

Steve,

McCain's son just came back from serving in Iraq.

McCain has been to Iraq 8 times. He was breifed on each trip. How many times has Obama or Clinton been there?

McCain knows all the leaders around the world. He goes to nato conferences all the time.

Steve,

Obama mixed up the leader of canada and just yesterday mixed up iran and iraq.

Steve,

McCain knows far more about iraq than clinton or obama. He has gone on in length with imus about the differences between sunnis and shiites.

Gee Jason, I thought you would in same way respond to my 1:18:57 PM post? Or were those three Hillary posts meant for me? I hope not, I can't stand her. She will lie, cheat, and steal her way into the White House. She probably sold her soul to the devil and used somebody else's blood to sign the deal.
