Mr. Campaign Finance Reform Exploited Campaign Finance Loophole

April 27, 2008 12:48 PM

The New York Times today takes a gander at how, during the dark days of Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign last year, he used a corporate jet owned by the company his wife Cindy heads.

The campaign used it for seven months -- from August through February -- paying $241,149, which the Times reports is "approximately the cost of chartering a similar jet for a month or two, according to industry estimates.

"The senator was able to fly so inexpensively because the law specifically exempts aircraft owned by a candidate or his family or by a privately held company they control," the newspaper reports. "The Federal Election Commission adopted rules in December to close the loophole -- rules that would have required substantial payments by candidates using family-owned planes -- but the agency soon lost the requisite number of commissioners needed to complete the rule making.

"Because that exemption remains, Mr. McCain’s campaign was able to use his wife’s corporate plane like a charter jet, while paying first-class rates, several campaign finance experts said. Several of those experts, however, added that his campaign’s actions, while keeping with the letter of law, did not reflect its spirit."

So I'm curious. Just who put that specific exemption in the law in the first place? McCain worked on campaign finance - did he put it in for himself? Off the top of my head, I can't think of anyone else who would have been able to use it back then.

Let's see.....When McCain was shown on the news broadcasts carrying his own baggage through the airports in the early part of the Rep primaries the press derided him. When McCain tries to save people money, he is derided.

McCain can't seem to win with the press.

It makes much more sense, in a person's pocketbook, if McCain uses his wife's plane then asks people to donate to his campaign.

Now, it all makes sense why the old Geezer stopped barking at Obama at public campaign finance reform.

I do think this gives him an unfair advantage. Although I don't know what can be done about it.

Sorry - the article itself says the conduct was LEGAL. Ergo, there was no "rules violation." I feel weird as a lifetime Dem defending McCain, but after the media's snowjob on Hillary, I'm even more sensitive to b.s.

"Seems like he was trying to save money, and there was a rules violation of some type. It's unclear what harm was done. The matter is worth inquiry but doesn't rise to the level of serious misconduct. It's doubtful the media will give the issue serious airtime. There will be other opportunities to question Mr. McCain's suitability for the job he seeks."

"McCain talks about integrity but here is a man who has committed adultery"

LOLOLOL What, do you believe all the gossip the NYT spews out?

EXPLAIN

" and currently he openly violates the campaign laws he wrote"

Posted by: tony | Apr 27, 2008 2:53:06 PM

What has this got to do with Obama?

McCain talks about integrity but here is a man who has committed adultery, had been involved in one of the biggest scams in banking history as one of the Keating Five, and currently he openly violates the campaign laws he wrote. He has been lying and cheating all of his life.

yawn. this is a snore. the nyt is trying hard, but failing to smear mccain. no one cares about this. it's stupid. he didnt break the law. so your point is? this like saying the government wanted to change the law to make the tax deadline march 15, but could not get the votes, and mccain continued to file april 15....how dare he!

Posted by: tony | Apr 27, 2008 1:50:36 PM

There's that and the fraudulent way he got on the ballot without any signatures... John McCain is a fraud... And his campaign finance bill has harmed free speech in America. Why else can't you see "Hilliary the movie", where she is on tape knowingly violating election law, anywhere but online. Yup, John took care of that for poor Hilliary. No wonder she loves him SO much. They deserve each other, America DOESN'T!!!
