Obama Being Used by GOP Against Down-Ticket Dem

April 22, 2008 8:13 PM

Supporters of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, used to brag about how the GOP used to try to tar downticket Democrats by associating them with Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY.

The implication -- Clinton is toxic, Obama is magic.

Apparently no longer.

In two different TV ads for a Louisiana special election for a U.S. House seat, Republican groups are assailing Louisiana Democratic state Rep. Don Cazayoux by tying him to Obama.

The National Republican Congressional Committee tries to tie Cazayoux by tying him to Obama's "radical agenda on health care." Watch HERE.

The relatively new conservative group Freedom's Watch tries the same thing HERE.

Obama was an apparent help to Rep. Bill Foster, D-Illinois, in his special election. But there's a difference between Illinois and Louisiana. And there's a difference between then and now.

I am a rural, small-town American. I’m not bitter. I don’t carry a gun but I do believe in the Holy Bible and God.

Hillary won in Pennsylvania, despite being outspent by Obama's “mega bucks” and bombardment on TV, radio, internet ads, phone calls, etc., etc., because we believe Hillary to be the better candidate --- pure and simple. True Americans cannot be bought!

Hillary was GREAT in the Pennsylvania debate --- Obama did quite poorly.

OBAMA HAS REFUSED TO DEBATE IN NORTH CAROLINA. He apparently can only read a pretty scripted speech from a teleprompter --- And he wants to run our country??? NO WAY!

Does he plan to have Jeremiah Wright spewing “God Damn America” from the White House? It’s bad enough he did it in a church of God.

Are Obama’s frequent visitors going to be their anti-American, terrorist friends: bomber Ayers, Farrakhan, Rezko, among others?

We need someone to show respect to ALL Americans, regardless of where they live.

GOD BLESS AMERICA --- HILLARY 2008!

i find it so funny, in a sad way - the superdelegates are trying to save their hides, i.e., their jobs, by trying to figure out who to support. they think they'd better support obama or they'll be called racist. so they do.

then the truth about obama finally starts to come out. now they're associated with a racist, anti-american, terrorist-connected, hamas-endorsed, loser. what to do? what to do? if they stick with him, they're screwed. if they back out, they have african-american voter problems. what to do? what to do?

it would've been so much simpler if they'd simply tried to do something honest in the first place, like go for the most electable person, or the person who's best for the country, or the person who won their state, or the person who won their district, or whatever. but they tried to do a political calculation. and it's backfiring.

poor, poor, politicians...

I would love a Clinton/Edwards ticket! Health Care and the peoples needs would be top agenda items; no doubt.

You libs are something else you guys through racist at each other and sexist comments at each other, cry when you get asked a tough question, cry when your candidates true position is shown and blame it on the Republicans.

Now which party has the main stream media in its pocket - The Libs
What party has Billionaire George Soros with 50 Million dollars on the side to put out hit pieces on McCain - the libs
Which party meets behind closed doors with their elitist billionaires - The Libs
Which party has close associations with Terrorists - The libs

But that all is the Republicans fault they push the libs into the arms of terrorists!!

Jackie, Are you serious? I am sick and tired of the Clintons and their supporters trying to portray themselves as innocent victims of attacks by their so-called enemies...The fact is they are equally or more to blame for the negativism in this campaign. I used to support the Clintons when they came under Republican "attack". No longer....they are no better than the worst Republicans. Trying to portray them as victims of negativism is typical Clinton spin on the truth or at the least blatant hypocrisy. But then again the Clintons hypocrisy knows no bounds. I have lost all respect for both of them.

Why shouldn't the GOP go after an easy target? Obama's patiotism is questionable. He spends time with radicals that hate America. He uses his church then sells them out. He falls apart under pressure. He can't win big states even though he has millions of dollars.
Obama may have fooled millions of people but not PA...and not me.

I will vote for McCain if Hillary loses.

Posted by: cindy | Apr 23, 2008 10:44:17 AM

BO won all republican states because they want to screw up demo.

Only idiot thinks he can win those state in general election.

Black helped him win some other state, but they are too few in general election to make a difference.

Posted by: RHC | Apr 23, 2008 4:57:26 AM

Poor Obama followers, do you actually think you will part of Obama agenda if he wins?

Maybe if you play obama speeches backwards you can get your mind back, or at least your common sense.

Unless you are on his Dance*cough*Card you are nothing.

Posted by: seah | Apr 23, 2008 2:56:25 AM

The deal is Obama and his campaign have been relentlessly negative. It is the height of hypocrisy....For almost 20 years the Republican hate machine has battered Clinton...they were almost successful at making her a cartoon cariacture of evil...

As a campaign tactic Obama has exploited this from the beginning...

Posted by: Jackie | Apr 23, 2008 2:47:59 AM

Well Obama, the vote showed that the voters of PA are far from poor little bitter souls. The only bitter people I've seen thus far are the bitter little racists and America Haters that inhabit Obama's so called "church" in Chicago.

Posted by: Political Realist | Apr 23, 2008 2:12:17 AM

I also have said this before too.

If Kerry, Kennedy, Dodd and Pelosi INSIST on ramming Obama down our throats all to get CRUSHED in a general election we should win easily, I want all their heads on a stick.

Looks like the working class people have a strong fighter in their corner and they gave her the knockout over the elitst canidate who just does not connect to them. Well I don't want to gloat but it is a happy time in HillaryLand and she showed she can take a licking and still keep on ticking! Well it is on to IN and beyond!

Cheers to you Hillary and I and all other Hillary supporters will have a drink of whiskey and toast the next president of the U.S.A. and the first woman President, Hillary Clinton!!! This Ones For The Girls!!!!

It's a beautiful thing. Check out the scoreboard on ABC News Politics page. It shows that Hillary leads the overall popular national vote by over 100,000. More Democrats have pulled the lever for Hillary than any other candidate, Obama included. How about them apples. The Obama Zombies are in for a rude awakening before this is all over!

Obama can't win the big states. Do any of you Obama supporters think any democrat is going to win Wyoming or most of the small states that Obama won.

Posted by: Tina D | Apr 23, 2008 12:51:45 AM

In February Obama's team projected Hillary would win PA 52-47. She appears to have won 55-45. That is good for her, but not huge in and of itself, in the big picture.

Obama people...America is starting to understand (since the media has shed some light ) that if Barry wins...America loses. Get a grip. People thinking about America, send your comments to democrats.org. Let Nancy and Howard know what you think about their rush to end this nomination.

Reading the below guess who is our worst enemy?

Clinton can't win but is intent on taking down the party, finding faults vs. strenghths, using 9/11 fear tactics all for what?

6 delegates!

We're all going to regret this,

Posted by: Tired of Hate vs. Hope | Apr 23, 2008 12:26:00 AM

DL,
Be honest, Obama outspent Hillary 5 to 1. All pundits said he would have to pull within 5 to show that he was effective. He failed. This is a win for Hillary, a clear loss for Obama, beyond the delegate count, beyond the popular vote, although Hillary upped it by a nice sizable number. On ABC News, as they include Michigan and Florida, Hillary now leads by over a 100,000 popular votes. If the DNC seats these states, then the populars get counted and Hillary holds the natioal lead. I think it all rests on whether a) she can turn the national polls back again, which she has a good shot at it, and b) whether she can take Indiana, which she also has a good shot at. If she loses the latter then the tidal wave of supers will go against her, but if she wins, she will get their notice.
========================================
SuperDelegates, Hillary is getting stronger and stronger, Obama is getting weaker and weaker -- he just can't close the deal, despite the many millions (what a waste).

DL,
Good luck with McCain. I work with lawyers all the time. It's an easy target to say they lack character. Most of the lawyers I know do the right thing, as I believe Hillary does. Probably Obama tries to also, with a few exceptions as well. However, I don't see the negative qualities that you see in Hillary. I see her toughness and her advocacy for the right issues, year after year, without fail. McCain, he's a Republican, and he adopts the wrong position on just about everything.

the supers know that barack can win without most of Hillary supporters with the numbers as they are shaping up ...but I can tell you Hillary absolutely by the numbers can't win without Baracks...
and you see those numbers of who will support which caniddate change with whomever is on top.

The supers know this...but we will keep fighting for this woman to have her rightful dight for the coronation she had groomed for 15 years....

you all don't realize big state wins in primaries absolutely and uiunequivically don't matter unless they are HUGE margins...Hillary almost never has HUGE margins... even after she pulls out every thing she can.

and this is a woman who has not one of her scandals brought up besides the ones she and her husband presently keep making.

and yes westcoast messenger for the first time as of tonight because of her statements on Iran and how dirty I think she is I realized tonight that as much as I think financially we will get hurt and that McCain is pro-life... we need to make a serious change in people who think these kind of politics are okay. We as a country have lost our moral center when these tactics and old school politics can be used like this because they think it is their right.

I will campaign for Mccain... it's not about being bitter but my issues are close enough (I lean on the independent side of the dem aisle)that I much rather have a person like mcCain that has some character rather than Hillary...hands down.

As a Californian who proudly voted for Hillary in her landslide win in our state, I want to welcome PA to the major states of CA, NY, TX, AZ, FL, MI, and Ohio who have all voiced their support for Hillary. Obama can have his wins like Idaho and Iowa and North Dakota and Mississippi. He can't fool us voters in the largest states who are far from bitter and do not agree with Obama and Wright that God should Da*n America. God Bless America!

Posted by: Political Realist | Apr 23, 2008 12:02:08 AM

PA democratic white male voter....very happy with tonight's outcome....PA is a smart state...lots of top tier univerities, medical centers, and blue collar workers. We, with Ohio, Massachusettes, New York, and other democratic states have spoken tonight. I don't want to hear any more whining from Howard Dean or Nancy Pelosi. They've lost a lot of their consituency.

Posted by: PGHPAVOTER | Apr 23, 2008 12:01:32 AM

Alison,
Nice try in an attempt to reverse this outcome. Every pundit I heard leading up to this said she's got to win by 10 points to validate her continuing campaign. Guess what, she won by 10 points! Obama claims he closed the gap. At what cost? And still no close? I'm willing to bet he finally caved in and even paid the street money to try to close this and still got stomped.

and obviously Sam would say that ... Her campaign has only made it here from FOB's. They were even telling stories about all the campaigns where Hillary won in the past tonight...only they were talking about Bill...they forgot ...he actually isn't the one people are voting for.

if anyone thinks they are entitled without reason (lol) outside their royal status it is obvious to the impartial it is hillary who does anything and says anything and so does her buddies Terry and Lanny because "it is her turn GD IT!" (stomp your feet a little with that) .

No one buys the Obama thinks he is entitled for no reason...obama supporters may ...because he has risen above and done the impossible...he has taken down (although still fighting) this crooked old pair who think they own the party.

It is about them not the party is why eventually someone will take them out of the political scene. You are blind if you can't see she is a whack job playing fighter with her bullet dodging stories and obliterating and massive retaliation stories...

If she is ready to lead on day one she might want an instruction book of the things she has portrayed herself as to keep them straight...I don't thinnk people in NH are happy at all with her aggressive and fiscally unsound statements about Iran.

Posted by: dl | Apr 22, 2008 11:53:39 PM

Republicans are whooping it up tonight. What a victory for Rush and Limbaugh. Congrats to Hillary's supporters for her home state victory. On to Indiana and North Carolina. Should be a lot more fun for Obama, in states that favor him! I wonder what Hillary will do now?

You got it backwards--
Ask your "girl" - why is she

(b) No mathematical way to win the pledged delegates
(c) No mathematical way to win popular votes (forget Florida - I live in Florida)

If Hillary was the "inevitable" - why is the only available way for her to win nuclear? (and not just Iran)

Nice try -- but send the Message - it's over Hillary - and in 2012 your party will not forget the "low road" you took in the name of your own ambition

For what they are doing to the democratic party, for their feeling they "own" the party, for her inherent belief that Barack Obama cannot win and the way she is transmitting this---She disgusts me

Funny, I was talking about Clinton.

But if you want to address the Republican party.

I'd say Iraq, Katrina, the skyrocketing national debt, stagnant wages, the mortgage crisis, and a failure to create jobs is a good way to define the Republican Party in the Bush years.

Fact is, Barack Obama opposed the war in Iraq and said something pretty smart asbout it:

"I know that even a successful war against Iraq will require a US occupation of undetermined length, at undetermined cost, with undetermined consequences. I know that an invasion of Iraq without a clear rationale and without strong international support will only fan the flames of the Middle East, and encourage the worst, rather than best, impulses of the Arab world, and strengthen the recruitment arm of al-Qaeda.

I am not opposed to all wars. I’m opposed to dumb wars."

Sounds prescient and smart.

Clinton said nothing of the sort in 2002.

Let's examine the Obama record on Iraq. He SPOKE against the war before he started to vote and vote and vote, always to fund it and fund it and fund it. So did Hillary. Their records are identical. If you want someone that is not contaminated by the war vote, I guess you can throw away your vote with Nader. No matter what, nobody wants a spineless wimp in charge, so your choices are Hillary, if you are a Democrat or Independent or a Clinton Republican, or McCain if you are an extremist Republican. Good luck Kid.

Clinton voted for the war in Iraq, the AUMF, and against the Levin Amendment which would have given Congress a hand brake to use against the President.

The war in Iraq has cost us in lives and dollars lost. Our economy is in tough shape and the price of oil has gone through the roof.

If Clinton is so competent, why did she vote for the war in Iraq w/o even putting a "hand brake" on the President?

Posted by: kid oakland | Apr 22, 2008 11:33:23 PM

Mr. Obama has received overwhelming support from a single source. It has been sufficient to keep him in the lead and the likely winner in the primary. It will be more difficult to win in the GE without support from other groups. It's hard to believe, but the Democrat Party may have squandered the opportunity to win back the WH. It should have been easy given the dismal performance of the current administration.

Posted by: texasdemocrat | Apr 22, 2008 11:30:03 PM

Doug,
You are the spinmeister of the evening, definitely. It's a REALLY BIG WIN for Obama, in your eyes, because he didn't lose by 20. This is the guy you want to put in charge of the nuclear trigger. Hillary wins huge despite being viewed with high unfavorables. What does that say about Obama? It says he's relatively pathetic when it comes to a key state like Pennsylvania.

How can Obama claim superdelegates follow the state's pledged delegates when Clinton won MA but Kennedy/Kerry went with him. Same for New Mexico and Richardson. You can't have it both ways. Either the superdelegates can INDEPENDENTLY pledge whomever they please (as the rules state) or ALL must follow the state's pledged delegates. I know the new math is difficult for the Obama youngsters to comprehend but try to keep up.

They won't even have to chew him up. He is that easy of a mark.

Obam CANNOT win the nomination with "pledged" delegates. Do you OBam supporters understand that? I doubt it.

Posted by: geevill | Apr 22, 2008 10:14:59 PM

As NBC's Chuck Todd points out tonight, Clinton's chances of winning the nomination based on pledged delegates is effectively over tonight.

If Obama keeps his pledged delegate lead to around 150, Clinton needs to win 70% of them on May 6 -- and if not, 80% of them after May 6.

That's more than next to impossible.

What does this mean? A renewed focus on the vote? A focus on the
automatic/superdelegates?

A focus on the race holistically?

Obama's still won twice as many contests as Hillary, won more of the popular vote, has a nearly insurmountable lead in delegates and has outraised her by some $40 million or so.

Posted by: ambinder | Apr 22, 2008 10:08:37 PM

Here is some tonight's truth, behind the smiling facade of the Clinton campaign:

" NBC News’ Andrea Mitchell quoted senior Clinton advisers as saying their analysis of interviews with voters as they left the polls indicated that Clinton would not get a big victory. The atmosphere was tense inside the campaign because it appeared Clinton would not get a boost of momentum from the night’s returns, Mitchell reported.

The senior advisers said that coupled with the campaign’s serious financial problems — the latest Democratic filings with the Federal Election Commission showed that Clinton was running in the red, while Obama had $42 million in cash on hand — the results meant they would have to work to find a new rationale for Clinton’s remaining in the race, Mitchell reported."

Mr. Obama supporters please don't touch Charlie from ABC he is my favorite news anchor, Obama didn't do good on that last debate it is not ABC's fault, Mrs. Clinton was also asked tough questions and she answered them pretty well. God, thank you for Pennsylvania for voting for the rest of the people of the United States who are struggling with economic hard times, and for the people who are about to lose their jobs and homes. Mrs. Hillary '08.

After Wright (!), Bittergate, the ABC debate (patriotism... flag pins... weather underground...) Hillary is NOT able to hold on to her lead in PA, and YET people call her a STRONG candidate?

Incredible. If there is anything AMAZING about this race it is Obama's incredible powers of recovery. Today he has the biggest lead in RCP National poll so far, an average of more than 10 points... AFTER Wright, bittergate, the ABC debate etc.

Obama is a gutless wimp with a glass jaw. Clinton will fight to the end.

Who wouldn't want to face a waffling waffle eater instead of a never-say-die opponent?

If Obama wins the Democratic ticket, he won't win the big states and he won't win the red states either. It will be a landslide for the GOP machine.

So Pennsylvania goes for Clinton. Unbelievable. If most democrats think she's untrustworthy then why did they vote for her? We are screwed.

By the way she won't when the nomination
because no matter what her flight of fancy it's all about the delegates, not electoral college votes, that's the general election.

By trying to bully the superdelegates to vote for her because she has won the big states in a democratic primary,
she's trying to advocate a "tyranny of the majority" and that goes against our representative democracy, sorry Hill!!! Go Obama!!!

Ask yourself who the republicans want to win. Who have they been ragging on the past few months. Hilery. Why? Because they are afraid of Obama.

Posted by: cw | Apr 22, 2008 9:33:32 PM

The fact is that Obama can't win the big States, the states that are critical to the General election, he was most of the State where the Republicans will win in November. So his argument is flowed!
He is a whiner and a quitter that only speaks with 200 millions dollars to buy his megaphone.
If he is the nominee McCain will the next President!

I don't think McCain is ready to what Obama and his network has in store for him on the internet and beyond.
Everyone thinks Obama will have the toughest time in the GE.
I am looking forward to it. He plays a different game. HIs political game is pretty damn good for a rookie. He's like Lebron James or Kobe Bryant outta high school.
Watching his campaign switch gears and move so efficiently gives me a taste of what kind of organization he would demand in the white house.
A lot of our problems are that we have a very outdated way of doing things in the government. That I think would change immediately.
Bottom line: With Obama as President the Yes we Can is believable. Because if he Could, I Can, You Can, We all Can fix this country.
The GOP will come after him with whatever they have and he can fight off the same old politics. Especially if the People decide they won't go for that! No No!! They have divided and conquered us for decades now.
Obama '08!!!

If Clinton was the frontrunner they could easily have tied the Democrat to her.

This is just plain stupid.

At 8:45 p.m. Fox News declares Hillary the winner in Pa.

Go Hillary!!!!!!!!!!!

Obambi is a losing proposition, we lost before with Gore and Kerry for listening the left wing side of the party. We got Bush, now will be McCain!
Even the GOP is saying today that Hillary will be a more formidable candidate.

Posted by: Kate_Oregon | Apr 22, 2008 8:46:46 PM

This is the dirty secret that people don't want to talk about. Months ago, the congressional races were the democrats to lose. That's looking less certain now if Obama is at the top of the Democratic ticket.

Posted by: s. valenti | Apr 22, 2008 8:43:10 PM

Stephanopulos must have written this.

This would have happened no matter what. If the GE had started, McCain would have attack Obama by now.

ABC Sucks.

Posted by: Right on Day1 | Apr 22, 2008 8:40:25 PM

The GOP is sure that Obama will be the DNC nominee, that's all there's to this.

Clinton might be out soon (she's broke) and then they'd have to make new ads.

Posted by: greg | Apr 22, 2008 8:40:16 PM

ABC, would Clinton help the down ticket candidates? The answer is a big NO. Did Stephanopulos write this piece? he is really trying hard to help his candidate..

Posted by: Jim | Apr 22, 2008 8:33:40 PM

Tony - yes we are. With BHO as the nominee we can kiss our chance goodbye

Posted by: Chipo1965 | Apr 22, 2008 8:32:43 PM

Some things have emerged about Obama that makes him less attractive than a month ago. Rev. Wright hit the headlines...that has really had an impact!

we're screwed
