Obama's College Trip to Pakistan
April 08, 2008 8:27 AM
At a fundraiser in San Francisco, Ca., Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., claimed he had more world experience than his rivals, Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., and introduced a new bit of biographical information.
"Foreign policy is the area where I am probably most confident that I know more and understand the world better than Senator Clinton or Senator McCain," Obama said, according to the Huffington Post.
"It's ironic because this is supposedly the place where experience is most needed to be Commander-in-Chief. Experience in Washington is not knowledge of the world. This I know. When Senator Clinton brags 'I've met leaders from eighty countries' -- I know what those trips are like! I've been on them. You go from the airport to the embassy. There's a group of children who do native dance. You meet with the CIA station chief and the embassy and they give you a briefing. You go take a tour of a plant that [with] the assistance of USAID has started something. And then -- you go."
"You do that in eighty countries," Obama said, "You don't know those eighty countries. So when I speak about having lived in Indonesia for four years, having family that is impoverished in small villages in Africa --knowing the leaders is not important -- what I know is the people...I traveled to Pakistan when I was in college -- I knew what Sunni and Shia was [sic] before I joined the Senate Foreign Relations Committee."
This last part -- a college trip to Pakistan -- was news to many of us who have been following the race closely. And it was odd that we hadn't hear about it before, given all the talk of Pakistan during this campaign.
So I asked the Obama campaign for more information.
Apparently, according to the Obama campaign, In 1981 -- the year Obama transferred from Occidental College to Columbia University -- Obama visited his mother and sister Maya in Indonesia. After that visit, Obama traveled to Pakistan with a friend from college whose family was from there. The Obama campaign says Obama was in Pakistan for about three weeks, staying with his friend's family in Karachi and also visiting Hyderabad in Southern India.

I find this trip to Pakistan by Obama to be much more interesting than his place of birth. It is very unlikely that Pakistan would have allowed entry to anyone traveling on an American passport during those tumultuous times. If Obama had instead entered Pakistan on a, say, Indonesian passport as an Indonesian citizen his American citizenship would have been forfeited. I would sure like to get a look at Obama's U.S. passport records...

What a shame Obama claims he wants to fix this country. Sure it needs help, but not from the likes of a guy who supports a racist church, has too many questionable ties to terrorist countries, ties to questionable people, who gives ACORN 800,000 to recruit democrats who don't even exist. It's just too easy to cover tracks. America needs to wake up and choose the lesser of the 2 evils. Time to vote seedy, anti-american political people out of Washington. Why isn't this all being explored?? Good question. I suppose Obama would cry racism! Well I think we could throw it right back at him! Better do it sooner than later! In the mean time, dig deep and get yourself informed! I did and I will no longer be voting for Obama.

Obama in '08 is the only choice to make now that 72 year old McCain has chosen his running mate.

First, it is not a college trip. It is his personal visit to Pakistan.
He stayed there for 3 weeks when it was under turmoil.
Nothing less a education in one of the religious schools is a reason to stay for 3 weeks in that country.
Why saudis go there. It is for the religious education and training.
Muslims from West who had an inclination on the extreme religion visited there other than relatives.

It all sounds very innocent, "a college trip to Pakistan".
Pakistan was in turmoil in 1981 and ruled of martial law. Millions of Afghan refugees were living in Pakistan, while the Afghan Mujahedeen operated from bases inside Pakistan in their war with the Soviets. One of the leaders that based his operation in Quetta, Pakistan was Usama Bin Laden (The Sheik).
Pakistan was on the banned travel list for US Citizens at the time and all non-Muslim visitors were not welcome unless sponsored by their embassy for official business.
The would be only a few reasons a young Westerner of the Muslim faith would travel to Pakistan in 1981:
To Participate in Jihad, which is the duty of every "True Believer".
For religious education in a Wahabbi sect, Saudi funded, Madrassa.
In order to purchase drugs from the drug marketplace.
Pakistan was not a tourist stop nor the place to hang out with someone's family in 1981.

heres a good one, while HRC is blasting Obama on his remarks she does a little oops of her own:
"If we are striving to bring people together — and I believe we should be — I don’t think it helps to divide our country into one America that is enlightened and one that is not"
Odd that she would use those words isn't it?

I lived in another country from the ages of 4-12, I have relatives in other countries, I've visited at least 5 other countries. I think that may qualify me to be Ruler of the World!!

The more I find out about this guy, the more scared I get about this country's future if he's elected. I can't believe the way the media is pouring the koolaid and so many are drinking it hook, line and sinker. People - think for yourselves. We know nothing about this guy. I was watching Bob the Buildier with my son last night and who knew Obama stole his slogan YES WE CAN! He's an arrogant phony

For me what is more important is to look at the facts and analyze objectively. I still do not understand how anyone voted for the US to invade Iraq when the facts were looked at. In that Obama has Clinton and McCain beat.
After NO Foreign policy knowledge Bush anyone would be better.

I cannot help but wonder whether he and his wife are true patriots. I have not "ever" wondered whether any other leading contenders for our president have been patriotic. Does anyone have a picture of him saying the allegiance to the American flag--if so, can you please publish it? He has no substance and I am truly worried that he could become the president of our United States of America.

"Jackie" said, " . . . as well as being involved in negotiations in many "hot spots" like Ireland where no one denies she was instrumental in uniting women from both factions." Uh, I and the Irish people involved in the negotiations deny that she was instrumental. She hosted one meeting -- sort of a tea.
I think the important thing is that his experience in distant country is not the rarified meeting and photo op with the powerful, but a chance to live with (even for only three weeks, in the case of Pakistan) other people to cumulatively understand their needs and motivations. Other countries' leaders often spend a great deal of time as young people going to school in other countries. Ours don't. So, what we end up with is leaders who substitute American high-handed desires (or at least those of its largest corporations) for what the world finds acceptable, which is one reason why Bush burned through our affinity "capital" so quickly after 9/11. Obama understands that starting wars and dropping bombs isn't "just fine" just because it's little brown people who are on the receiving end of American ordnance.

did obama have visas for these countries he visited?
what nation's passport did he travel on.
this was when obama left occidental college because he wanted to be a dentist and thought it was a dental school. occi-DENTAL!

I think Obama has reached a point where he believes he can say anything and no one will question it.
As First Lady Hillary Clinton played a major role as ambassador for the President as well as being involved in negotiations in many "hot spots" like Ireland where no one denies she was instrumental in uniting women from both factions.
Obama's college trip is not experience...His time in Indonesia as a toddler does not assure he knows the people there.
Is Jake Tapper the only one in the media that will mention this? Because how sad is this. If Hillary brings it up she will be accused of attacking Obama....and in the text of this little talk, as always, he is hammering her.
So exactly what is it about being first lady that does not count as experience? The whole attitude that 4 years representing America and meeting with world leaders is not experience surely smacks of sexism!
Obama's aggorance is wearing thin.

I have read from the Clinton supporters. Its easy to tell that they are full of lying wonders like their candiate of choice.Really who's unelectable or electable?

I have been to Jamaica 3 times! Count them - 3! I should immediately be appointed Ambassador to Jamaica!

So Obama stayed in Pakistan for three weeks...that DOES NOT qualify him in the area of foreign policy. I have been to Moscow and stayed there for three weeks before journeying on to the Urals. Does this make me an "expert" on Russia? Hardly!!!!
