On Chelsea, Monica, and the Scandal That Dare Not Speak Its Name
April 01, 2008 10:30 AM
At N.C. State yesterday, Chelsea Clinton was again asked by a student about her father's conduct as president, i.e., l'affair Lewinsky.
The question came on the heels of a question asked Chelsea last week by Evan Strange, a student at Butler University, as to whether her mother lost credibility by initially blaming the controversy on a "vast right-wing conspiracy."
Chelsea curtly told Strange that it was none of his business.
Strange, a self-described Clinton supporter, insists he was not trying to cause trouble. (Watch him explain himself HERE) He supports Clinton and his friends always ask him about the scandal, he said.
This week, Chelsea, speaking at the Talley Student Center, was asked by freshman Bryce Davis about her response to Strange.
"It's none of your business," Chelsea said. "I'm sure there are things in your family that you don't think are anyone's business either."
Davis started to walk out, and Chelsea told him she didn't think anyone should vote for or against her mother because of her father.
"I'm not leaving because of that," Davis said. "I have a class."
Watch the exchange HERE.
In the N.C. State student newspaper, Davis explained himself further.
Chelsea's "father, at the time, was the president of the United States, and one of his primary duties as President was to be chief citizen," Davis said. "[By acting as] chief citizen, he should be a model citizen for the United States….I was not trying to embarrass Chelsea Clinton in front of my peers and I felt that when I left the meeting after my question, people felt that I was storming out of the building. In reality, I had a 12:30 p.m. class that I was five minutes late to."
Certainly there are more polite questions to ask someone than about when her father cheated on her mother.
That said, the Clinton campaign is trying to have it both ways -- using Chelsea as a spokeswoman, a surrogate, to advance Sen. Hillary Clinton's candidacy, but not subjecting her to the rigors other spokespeople -- including Cate Edwards, Meghan McCain, and the Romney boys -- have agreed to go through.
Chelsea's rule is that she doesn't take questions from the media, but she takes them from "real people."
Now she's deciding she's not going to answer some of the real people's questions, too.
If only questions about her father's extra-curricular activities were just a personal "none of your business" type deal.
They're not.
They tend to become huge scandals that distract from the more important work a president should be doing.
Clinton defenders say that's only because we live in a world with a vast right-wing media apparatus and a compliant, bottom-feeding media. Even if you buy that notion, this is the world we live in. Given that, it's nothing short of astonishing that we've made it this far in the campaign with few serious questions to Sen. Clinton about the impeachment of her husband.
Obviously, Sen. Obama won't touch it with a ten-foot pole. I'm not sure the Republicans will be that chivalrous.
When a senior adviser to Obama in Iowa raised the specter of Monica's stained GAP dress last week, the Clinton campaign pounced, pointing out the hypocrisy of Obama's supposedly clean-campaign invoking such a personal attack. Obama denounced the comment, the Iowa adviser took it back.
Fair enough. But I don't think it's unfair to ask the Clinton campaign if they can assure the American people that nothing like impeachment -- nothing that a normal family would be able to shrug off with "none of your business" -- will happen again.
Maybe Chelsea will never have to come up with a better answer than "None of your business." But I don’t know that her parents will be able to use that. Unfortunately, it became all of our business in graphically-footnoted detail.
The only time I've seen this question asked of Sen. Clinton was during the Politico/WJLA interview of Clinton two months ago.
A reader asked: "How could we be sure that some new business or personal scandal involving Bill Clinton won't erupt which the Republicans will use to blow your agenda and your administration right out of the water?"
Clinton's response: "Well, you know, I just can assure this reader that that is not going to happen. You know, none of us can predict the future, no matter who we are and what we're running for, but I'm very confident that that will not happen."
"None of us can predict the future"??

I don't recall the Kerry girls being asked about their parents divorce. I don't recall the Bush girls being ask about their fathers many failings. I guess it's just fair game to go after any Clinton. The leftwing democrats will look back with regret on the way the Clinton's were treated.

@ Glenn
If old recycled stories can help you win the White House.
Republicans are praying Obama is the nominee.

Bill Clinton sex scandal had disgrace the White House. This will hunt Hillary all the way to the White House. She was in the White House when the cheating was going on.She knew Bill had been cheating on her. There was claims that Bill had many black mistresses, plus a claims he had a black baby name Danny William back in 1986.The Republicans will use this agenda to blow this right out of the water.

Chelsea should work with the Clinton campaign to come up with a good answer to this question. It isn't going away. There will always be people who think it is a "fair" question.
That being said, I'd like to remind all of the posters who have said that Rev. Wright's actions shouldn't be a reason to have issue with Obama, should apply the same reasoning here. We're assessing the candidacy of Hillary Clinton, not Bill.
If Hillary's decision to stay with Bill is a reflection of her character, than Obama's decision to stay with Trinity and support Rev. Wright is a reflection of his character.
You can't have it both ways.

I think being associated with a church that legitimizes a terrorist organization (hamas) is worse than an affair. was anyone really hurt in the affair? no. does hamas kill innocent people? yes.

Let's get real! How was that rude young man's question helpful to any of us making a choice? Was Hillary to be blamed because her husband said he didn't have an affair and she chose to trust him? Is not a wife supposed to trust her husband until proven otherwise? This boy obviously believes in the hang the victim club! Any boy who would ask a young woman about her father's infidelity is no gentleman! If he were my son he would have to answer to me for that disgusting display

@SteveC:
You are reading too much into my comment. I am not comparing President Clinton and Reverend Wright. I am merely saying that guilt-by-association politics is a bad idea because the opponents of your views will always find another of your associates who is a 'bad apple'.
I am not sitting in judgment of President Clinton or Reverend Wright. I do not know either man. I think President Clinton on the whole is a good man and I also assume that if Reverend Wright was the satan projected by all of these comments that we would have heard of him long ago. I do not defend his sound bites as they are disgusting, but imagine if someone boiled your life down to a few sound bites (not of your choosing). I would hope that there were plenty of people willing to say you are an upright guy in spite of those things. Again, I don't defend his comments or Senator Obama's association with him. But I take Senator Obama at his word just like I took President Clinton at his word. I hope Senator Obama does not disappoint me.

There is no reason to ask Chelsea Clinton about her father - go ask Bill Clinton himself at one of his events! We have had much evidence in the media lately that male politicians have a hard time keeping their pants zipped around women (and men) who are not their spouse. Please provide evidence that Hillary suffers from the same affliction as the men, otherwise it seems that we have the best argument yet to put a woman in the White House. Is Michelle going to start answering questions about her husbands' drug use and past sexual behavior or is that off limits because Wafflebama is The One!

@ Emmanuel Winner
I've never heard these cowards ask Bill or Hillary about the Monica affair.

Some people will focus on the great things JFK did during his Presidency, others want to know about his affair with Marilyn Monroe.
Same thing here.

Chelsea is a surrogate. She needs to deal with the same issues all other surrogates do. The Lewinsky scandal does raise problems concerning character and electability. Yes, she needs to address the issue, any surrogate does.

We voters have the right to remind the world about Monica as long as Bill Clinton stays in politics. We care about the judgment, character and honesty of our President and he was lacking all of it.
Bill Clinton stared right into the camera saying he did not have "sexual relations with that woman". We knew he was lying and the blue dress is the ONLY reason he finally admitted to his lie. The reason I choose to remember it is I don't like to be lied to and I don't ever forget it.
If Clinton had just admitted his affair with Monica, it probably would not have been such a big deal in the end. He would not have perjured himself and would not have been impeached. BUT he chose to lie. His track record all along showed a compelling argument for him being a womanizer and he chose to lie to all of America under oath. Hillary defended him with the right wing conspiracy theory. So, yes I think questions pertaining to that sorted scandal are the public's business. Bill Clinton made them public business.
Hillary has been caught in numerous lies recently. Her platform of an implied co-presidency was false proven by her first lady calendars, her Bosnia sniper fire story a lie proven by video, freedom treaties in Ireland debunked, and last but certainly not least NAFTA where again her calendar and video showed she did support it. The story of Hillary (not Obama) saying one thing in the debate about NAFTA and telling the Canadian government not to worry was upheld by the Canadian government for goodness sake. Again, I personally don't like to be lied to and I will not forget it.
I support Obama in this election. I can tell you with abolute certainty who I will NEVER vote for.
Before all you Hillary fanatics jump all over me, let me say these are my thoughts and I can express them freely on this blog. Post your thoughts and I will read them. But do not keep attacking fellow bloggers with your fanatic rants. I believe you have no way to defend your candidate given the current state of her campaign so you choose to personally attack the other bloggers. We would be better served to simply state our thoughts and discuss our views on the candidates and issues but not each other.

@hopespring52:
Agreed that it is a bad question and she should not address the infidelity. But the question will be continued to be asked and refined until it comes out "Please comment on President Clinton's impeachment and the events that led to it." The 'none of your business' retort just won't work. I really think she needs to get ahead of the issue and stop the question before it gets asked ad nauseum.

I'm tired of reading all this BS that the Clinton's feel entitled to the Presidency.
HELLO?
THE SUPER DELEGATES have said they are going give it to Obama not to offend the African American community.
Just because you're a women, a Clinton, African American, or biracial does not make you entitled to the Presidency.
The superdelegates need to pick the candidate who can beat John McCain and who will deliver on his/her promises!

Correction, of course, Chelsea's father was caught cheating on her mother.
Posted by: hopesprings52 | Apr 1, 2008 1:10:30 PM
Note to the student who asked the question: he's looking for a "model citizen" to be president. What is a model citizen? And if you're looking for a perfect person to be president you ain't never going to find it. Btw, none of our greatest leaders were perfect. Secondly, candidates choose all the time what they will and won't answer. Bush was asked about cocaine use. He told us he didn't want to talk about it -- he made alot of mistakes before he was 40.
Hillary's father was caught cheating on her mother, she should be excused for not wanting to talk about it, don't you think?

@John:
You're right and there is nothing wrong with saying his middle name. Hussein is not a bad word. But there is a problem when people say it to imply he is un-American just because the name is not Anglo. Especially because when it is done in that way, it is basically telling Arab Americans (or anyone with a 'different-sounding' name) that they are not "real" Americans.
I wish Obama would just say "My name is Barack Hussein Obama, and what is your point?"

Chelsea is no longer a child. Her father's behavior and impeachment had the entire world turned in to watch. Ken Star, and everyone else involved wasted our time (to include the former Presidenet) over a piece of (you fill in the blank). And the entire time we watched the trail of a former President, our enemy Bin Laden was plotting a hit on the WTC. The entire time Bin Laden was hitting our war ships at port, and embassys in other country's, and we were hooked to the TV, on the lastest lie told, and who was going to pay for it. These questions should be asked. It is not a family personal thing, when it took tax payers money to fund the investigation, and impeachment action. If we elect HRC, we might as well just give McCain (who doesn't deserve it), the White House before November. The Clinton's are an easy win for the Republicans, they already know how to bet them.
The younger Americans are asking the right questions, and God Bless them for doing it. We didn't. We were satified with false peace (we're paying for over and over again in blood) and prosperity. What's your stock worth today, your home? Did we spend our prospertiy on a WAR! The former Clinton Adminstration was good, it left the party unable to reelect another Dem President following all those glory days, because Bill had no self control. 21st Century American doesn't need anyone with the last name Clinton as Chief Citizen again, and we don't owe them anything.

If you can't say Obama's middlename or Barack H. Obama then you definitely can't ask about Monica.
