Rev. Wright Delivers Fiery Address to NAACP
April 27, 2008 11:28 PM
Speaking in Detroit, at the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People's 53rd annual "Fight for Freedom Fund Dinner," Rev. Jeremiah Wright took on his critics even while he spoke of a new, unified day coming.
You can watch the speech HERE.
Addressing a local Republican official who'd called Wright “divisive," Wright told the welcoming crowd in his keynote address, "I am not one of the most 'divisive.' Tell him the word is 'descriptive.' I describe the conditions in this country -- conditions divide, not my description."
Wright's appearance guaranteed more media attention for the former pastor of the Democratic president frontrunner, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, who likely had hoped the issue -- and Wright -- would go away. In more news that would no doubt trouble Obama, Wright mentioned that he was working on a book.
"I'm not here for political reasons," Wright said. "I'm not a politician." He said that might surprise in the crowd of 10,000 since "many in the corporate-owned media have made it seem that I'm running for the Oval Office. I am not running for the Oval Office; I've been running for Jesus for a long, long time, and I'm not tired yet."
Most of Wright's speech addressed the theme of the dinner, “A Change is Gonna Come,” talking about the differences between different cultures and races, saying "a change is coming because we no longer see others as being deficient…Different doesn't mean deficient."
"The black religious tradition is different," he said in comments that seemed to address the controversy about his sermons. "We do it a different way."
Wright discussed how different groups have seen other groups as "deficient." After saying English-speakers saw Arabic-speakers as "being deficient," Wright mentioned Obama almost as an aside.
"Please run and tell my stuck-on-stupid friends that Arabic is a language -- is a language, it is not a religion," he said. "Barack HUSSEIN Obama," he said, emphasizing the Illinois senator's middle name dramatically, "Barack HUSSEIN Obama, Barack HUSSEIN Obama. There are Arabic-speaking Christians, there Arabic-speaking Jews, Arabic-speaking Muslims and Arabic-speaking atheists. Arabic is a language, it is not a religion. Stop trying to scare folks by giving them this Arabic name like it's some disease."
The bulk of his remarks addressed, however, different groups seeing each other as deficient. He acted out the differences between marching bands at predominantly black and predominantly white colleges. "Africans have a different meter, and Africans have a different tonality," he said. Europeans have seven tones, Africans have five. White people clap differently than black people. "Africans and African-Americans are right-brained, subject-oriented in their learning style," he said. "They have a different way of learning." And so on.
After jokingly mocking the Boston accents of former Presidents John F. and Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., Wright said, "nobody says to a Kennedy, 'You speak bad English,' only to a black child was that said."
Wright said that he believes "a change is going to come, 'cause many of us are committed to change how we see others who are different."
Earlier in the day, Wright delivered two sermons at the Friendship-West Baptist Church in Dallas, referring to his "public crucifixion," according to the Houston Chronicle. Wright will address the National Press Club in Washington, DC, Monday morning.

Many black people are voting for Sen. Obama only because he's black, and some of them will support Pastor Wright no matter what he says, because they are hesitant to back away from supporting Sen. Obama. White for white vote for Hillary as well, but my feeling, not supported by any data, is that black people are using this ballot racism/retribution more than the whites are.
There is no black America, there is no white America - there is only America, one America.
Sen. Obama spoke on Meet the Press and said some more of his illogical, rhetorical play on words (me talk prettier than you) again by saying "I had a white Mother...it's in my DNA to bring the country together".
What nonsense.
If a Trinity member cannot see the racism in Pastor Wright's words, and conduct, at the NAACP and Press Corps., than they are not facing the man as he presented himself to the world.
The black people I have heard from have said that Rev. Wright is dismantling the progress we have all worked so hard to create (70+ years), that it could evaporate. A person close to both Wright and Sen. Obama comment that Rev. Wright is a "very sensitive man", thin skinned, so this lashing out at the NAACP and Press Corps., really just appears to be a wounded ego, bruised pride thing.
It's impossible for someone to watch Rev. Wright at both events and not form a personal opinion of his character.
It doesn't matter what Rev. Wright has done last week, month or year, or if he saved millions of lepers. What matters is what he said and did the past 7-14 days.
Obama is not to be trusted. No one talks about the cigarettes he throws out the car window, because he's an addicted smoker, those years in Chicago, and no one has done coverage (especially ABC News) on Alice Palmer and the very dirty tactics Sen. Obama used (a voting ballot with only his name on it) to betray the people to get elected. If anyone cares about what happened in Florida and Bush, read up on Alice Palmer. These 2 stories give faint glimses into the real character of Sen. Obama.

For all that Reverend Wright has said, no one has yet to disprove his claims or discredit his sources.
While it is unfortunate that Senator Obama's campaign may be hurt by this, I think Rev. Wright has raised the bar on the topic of race relations and how just raising the issue damages black AMERICA

Obama is not qualified for President because he lacks experience, he's over confident and out of touch, detached even. He is over reliant on his advisors and others who invested in his success to benefit theirs. His weaknesses in fighting for himself have showed (the recent Debate with Hillary), his dishonesty with Trinity Church has showed (Wright, Trinity website, black theology), his distracting preoccupation with race (Wife's thesis, Chicago politics) has showed, and his dirty tactics to betray the people he claims to represent "change" to has showed (Alice Palmer, 1996, Chicago).

If the best the republican pundits has got for dirt on Obama is Wright then that just shows how desperate they are. I have even gotten republican newsletters saying “should the right sit this one out” if they had something, you better believe they would be spinning it so much we would have forgotten about Wright. Wright is not WRONG or wrong for Obama but an easy target to promote hate mongering and the pundits are going to live to see the errors of their ridiculous accusations because truth stands up for itself. . . it doesn’t need any help from the Republicans or Democrats. Most people with an IQ higher than 80 can recognize the hype. Wright is a man to be respected and admired and have led many to the Lord not to hate or bigotry. The only thing Wright is guilty of is name calling and believe me we all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. Lest Obama is the second coming of the Lord he knew what he was getting into and I hope for his sake he knows that if the two are in a room in agreement for the Lord they should continue to pray together for each other and do the work they know best. Obama politics and Wright should keep on running for the Lord before he does get tired and bring as many people as he can for God. Remember this is the main reason our forefathers put separation of state and church in the Constitution. I will never be ashamed of Rev Wrights work as a pastor or Obama’s gift for bringing people together to talk about complex problems, his appeal cannot be taught as there are many others with qualifications that rival his but no one can put a price on popular appeal. Obama’s a praying man and instead of applauding him for it he is getting crucified for it, but for believers in Christ like me that is the same thing that happened to Christ and we are all the better for it. This race is far from over and Rev Wright had every right to defend his beliefs and reputation. If it was so dastardly and bombastic you would not get 1000s of well educated African American and races of all kinds to attend the church. It continues to be a beacon of inspiration for many and will be so far into the future long after Barack has taken office and leaves office. It is not a bunch of zombie like members like the Polygamist cult and the people that attend can think for themselves and considering the vast numbers of African American churches to choose from people are choosing Trinity United Church of Christ by the droves. Rev Wright has nothing to be ashamed of nor Obama. Finding God there is a GOOD thing. That is what faith is all about and keeping it when the going gets rough. Wright taught me that. I have the audacity to believe that Obama can do it . . . Obama taught me that!

I really dont see why educated people would even take anything this bigget says. Rev. Wright is a idiot for the comments that he made and he owes us all an apology.

Wright is an opportunist. Now he has a book on the way!
He looked the fool at the press corps event, playing to the crowd, shamelessly enjoying every second.
He behaved like a court jester.
Who is behind this man? It's a question that pops into my head when I see his next stunt; and his next. Have Hillary's people gotten to him...or McCain's?
Or is he so egocentric that he can not resist his 15 minutes of fame?
And the content of his message is shocking!
It's playing out as an American tragedy because once again, so much is at stake.
I think Obama could make a difference around the world on behalf of all U.S. citizens if given the chance.
I do not understand the lust for blood in this land. Hillary is a warrior as is McCain who rarely is seen without a decades old photo of himself clearly visable behind him.
More's the pity.

Confused,
I agree with you that Wright is not racist. But I do think he's prejudice. There is a huge difference between the two, and Wright would be more inclined to take the side of a black man over a white man no matter who is actually right. And from the manner of his speech and text, it's quite obvious that Wright is prejudice.
Wrightstinks,
You can't use Wikipedia as a source. So many bloggers do it and I don't know why. There are sooo many other sources that are far more credible and can be used in a college thesus or research paper. Here are one;
Its an encyclopedia. It used to be the main source of quick information, it came in a group of books that were all alphabetical and had numerous subjects that were bridged by real scientists and not your average joe shmoe web blogger.

Wright spews racial hatred and then accuses people of being racist and taking him out of context when they call him on it.
Have you noticed Barak Obama isn't giving a speech about not disowning him anymore. Instead he's hiding from the guy hoping he'll go away.
He'll never get elected. The problem is Barak listened to the guy for more than 20 years. He can't claim he didn't know. There's an old saying. "You are like those you associate with" He associated with Wright for 20 years.
Don't try to say "He was just one among 8000 members of the church" Barak is well educated and should have known to stay away from people like this.

Rightsux you went to wikipedia of all sources, you cant write an academic paper and use that as a source, so come again. So, i would be racist to say black people are more likely to have sickle cell anemia while white people are more likley to get Paget's disease

Confused and for those others who say Wright is not racist:
Here is the definition of racist taken from Wikipedia
Racism is a belief system or doctrine which postulates a hierarchy among various human races or ethnic groups. It may be based on an assumption of inherent biological differences between different ethnic groups that purport to determine cultural or individual behaviour.
Wright believes whites and black are different biologically. He also made fun of white speech, bands, rhythm and more. There is your proof.

what do you mean, what has he said thats racist? Do you have a tv? Do you watch it? How could you ask, "what has he said that is racist?" If a white person would have said any of the things that he's said against so many people including past leaders, presidents, cultures, and other americans, there would be fallout from every race and culture in the United States. But he is Reverend Right gets away with it because he's black. I don't know where you have been. Takin a trip to outer space lately?
See again i ask this and you cant put in quotes what he said that is racist, he talks about the dark days of America many white people had said this before. MLK took a stand about this issue ans was criticized for it he lost his support in the media. It didnt matter whose mouth it came from, look at your own comments he gets away with it because he is black. that is full of prejudice there but again this doesnt only go to you. You cant throw such a heavy word around so lightly because its convenient to discredit someone who you dont agree with. He has people of a different hue in his congregation. So, please come again.

My question is for the people who say that this man is racist. What is it that he said that is racist. Also to those who say he is anti-american, Thomas Jefferson says democracy cannot survive without dissent. This is a founding father saying that. If you dont like him thats your choice but to call the man racist is extreme. You may feel offended but he didnt put race into there you did? So, that is my question and i see every time someone ask to point to where he has said racist remarks the question is usually ignored anyway.
Assalamu Alaikum (May Peace be With You)

Jeremiah Wright is a lunatic!! all he is is an extreme racist pretending to give a point and saying,"im not racist". Ya, whatever man. Get some help. Now, I don't usually stand up for people, but when he calls people like, "Garlic Noses", and picking on Jews, thats when I get mad and say something. I know how it feels to be discriminated and mistreated because of my race. I am white and in high school and had to put up with being discriminated against because i lived in a heavily populated African-American community. But, as far as im concerned, Rev. Wright, or should i say, Rev. Wrong, is in a whole lot of crap with God right now. Preaching this kind of crap is not what God wants. Ya, people may say, "its freedom of speech". Well, if it were a white pastor or revrend, he would have been in trouble a long time ago. All in all Rev. Wright is a gigantic racist lunatic and i hope it really hurts Obama. GO HILLARY!!!

Wright is laughing all the way to his million dollar mansion...Thank you for your kind donations brothers and sisters, I'll be sure to put it to good use.

The REV Wright said that, Obama was saved, sanctified and filled with the holy ghost. Yet Obama believes it is perfectly ok for not just abortions but partial birth abortions? This does not coincide with what the bible teaches us. It more coincides with what the bible teaches about everyone that says Lord Lord will NOT reach the kingdom of heaven. Or they will be judged by the fruits they bear. If the news had not let it be known that he went to Wright's church for 20 years would the general public have even known this from his life style or speeches? I wouldn't have! He reminds me of a Chameleon... he changes his colors when he needs to succeed.

ABC News has committed it's front page and much more to mis-describing the speech that Reverend Wright delivered and no resources to making the actual speech available; with which individuals could make their own determination of its merits or lack thereof.
The link to outside servers (second paragraph) connects to servers that are unavailable; likely due to and over-load of connect attempts. FYI.

"And you know something, when Hillary gets into office, she will turn the other cheek and continue to fight for black issues and the advancement of blacks and all other minorities in this country without a second thought."
