Rev. Wright Delivers Fiery Address to NAACP

April 27, 2008 11:28 PM

Speaking in Detroit, at the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People's 53rd annual "Fight for Freedom Fund Dinner," Rev. Jeremiah Wright took on his critics even while he spoke of a new, unified day coming.

You can watch the speech HERE.

Addressing a local Republican official who'd called Wright “divisive," Wright told the welcoming crowd in his keynote address, "I am not one of the most 'divisive.' Tell him the word is 'descriptive.' I describe the conditions in this country -- conditions divide, not my description."

Wright's appearance guaranteed more media attention for the former pastor of the Democratic president frontrunner, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, who likely had hoped the issue -- and Wright -- would go away. In more news that would no doubt trouble Obama, Wright mentioned that he was working on a book.

"I'm not here for political reasons," Wright said. "I'm not a politician." He said that might surprise in the crowd of 10,000 since "many in the corporate-owned media have made it seem that I'm running for the Oval Office. I am not running for the Oval Office; I've been running for Jesus for a long, long time, and I'm not tired yet."

Most of Wright's speech addressed the theme of the dinner, “A Change is Gonna Come,” talking about the differences between different cultures and races, saying "a change is coming because we no longer see others as being deficient…Different doesn't mean deficient."

"The black religious tradition is different," he said in comments that seemed to address the controversy about his sermons. "We do it a different way."

Wright discussed how different groups have seen other groups as "deficient." After saying English-speakers saw Arabic-speakers as "being deficient," Wright mentioned Obama almost as an aside.

"Please run and tell my stuck-on-stupid friends that Arabic is a language -- is a language, it is not a religion," he said. "Barack HUSSEIN Obama," he said, emphasizing the Illinois senator's middle name dramatically, "Barack HUSSEIN Obama, Barack HUSSEIN Obama. There are Arabic-speaking Christians, there Arabic-speaking Jews, Arabic-speaking Muslims and Arabic-speaking atheists. Arabic is a language, it is not a religion. Stop trying to scare folks by giving them this Arabic name like it's some disease."

The bulk of his remarks addressed, however, different groups seeing each other as deficient. He acted out the differences between marching bands at predominantly black and predominantly white colleges. "Africans have a different meter, and Africans have a different tonality," he said. Europeans have seven tones, Africans have five. White people clap differently than black people. "Africans and African-Americans are right-brained, subject-oriented in their learning style," he said. "They have a different way of learning." And so on.

After jokingly mocking the Boston accents of former Presidents John F. and Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., Wright said, "nobody says to a Kennedy, 'You speak bad English,' only to a black child was that said."
Wright said that he believes "a change is going to come, 'cause many of us are committed to change how we see others who are different."

Earlier in the day, Wright delivered two sermons at the Friendship-West Baptist Church in Dallas, referring to his "public crucifixion," according to the Houston Chronicle. Wright will address the National Press Club in Washington, DC, Monday morning.

Many black people are voting for Sen. Obama only because he's black, and some of them will support Pastor Wright no matter what he says, because they are hesitant to back away from supporting Sen. Obama. White for white vote for Hillary as well, but my feeling, not supported by any data, is that black people are using this ballot racism/retribution more than the whites are.

There is no black America, there is no white America - there is only America, one America.

Sen. Obama spoke on Meet the Press and said some more of his illogical, rhetorical play on words (me talk prettier than you) again by saying "I had a white Mother...it's in my DNA to bring the country together".

What nonsense.

If a Trinity member cannot see the racism in Pastor Wright's words, and conduct, at the NAACP and Press Corps., than they are not facing the man as he presented himself to the world.

The black people I have heard from have said that Rev. Wright is dismantling the progress we have all worked so hard to create (70+ years), that it could evaporate. A person close to both Wright and Sen. Obama comment that Rev. Wright is a "very sensitive man", thin skinned, so this lashing out at the NAACP and Press Corps., really just appears to be a wounded ego, bruised pride thing.

It's impossible for someone to watch Rev. Wright at both events and not form a personal opinion of his character.
It doesn't matter what Rev. Wright has done last week, month or year, or if he saved millions of lepers. What matters is what he said and did the past 7-14 days.

Obama is not to be trusted. No one talks about the cigarettes he throws out the car window, because he's an addicted smoker, those years in Chicago, and no one has done coverage (especially ABC News) on Alice Palmer and the very dirty tactics Sen. Obama used (a voting ballot with only his name on it) to betray the people to get elected. If anyone cares about what happened in Florida and Bush, read up on Alice Palmer. These 2 stories give faint glimses into the real character of Sen. Obama.

For all that Reverend Wright has said, no one has yet to disprove his claims or discredit his sources.

While it is unfortunate that Senator Obama's campaign may be hurt by this, I think Rev. Wright has raised the bar on the topic of race relations and how just raising the issue damages black AMERICA

Obama is not qualified for President because he lacks experience, he's over confident and out of touch, detached even. He is over reliant on his advisors and others who invested in his success to benefit theirs. His weaknesses in fighting for himself have showed (the recent Debate with Hillary), his dishonesty with Trinity Church has showed (Wright, Trinity website, black theology), his distracting preoccupation with race (Wife's thesis, Chicago politics) has showed, and his dirty tactics to betray the people he claims to represent "change" to has showed (Alice Palmer, 1996, Chicago).

If the best the republican pundits has got for dirt on Obama is Wright then that just shows how desperate they are. I have even gotten republican newsletters saying “should the right sit this one out” if they had something, you better believe they would be spinning it so much we would have forgotten about Wright. Wright is not WRONG or wrong for Obama but an easy target to promote hate mongering and the pundits are going to live to see the errors of their ridiculous accusations because truth stands up for itself. . . it doesn’t need any help from the Republicans or Democrats. Most people with an IQ higher than 80 can recognize the hype. Wright is a man to be respected and admired and have led many to the Lord not to hate or bigotry. The only thing Wright is guilty of is name calling and believe me we all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. Lest Obama is the second coming of the Lord he knew what he was getting into and I hope for his sake he knows that if the two are in a room in agreement for the Lord they should continue to pray together for each other and do the work they know best. Obama politics and Wright should keep on running for the Lord before he does get tired and bring as many people as he can for God. Remember this is the main reason our forefathers put separation of state and church in the Constitution. I will never be ashamed of Rev Wrights work as a pastor or Obama’s gift for bringing people together to talk about complex problems, his appeal cannot be taught as there are many others with qualifications that rival his but no one can put a price on popular appeal. Obama’s a praying man and instead of applauding him for it he is getting crucified for it, but for believers in Christ like me that is the same thing that happened to Christ and we are all the better for it. This race is far from over and Rev Wright had every right to defend his beliefs and reputation. If it was so dastardly and bombastic you would not get 1000s of well educated African American and races of all kinds to attend the church. It continues to be a beacon of inspiration for many and will be so far into the future long after Barack has taken office and leaves office. It is not a bunch of zombie like members like the Polygamist cult and the people that attend can think for themselves and considering the vast numbers of African American churches to choose from people are choosing Trinity United Church of Christ by the droves. Rev Wright has nothing to be ashamed of nor Obama. Finding God there is a GOOD thing. That is what faith is all about and keeping it when the going gets rough. Wright taught me that. I have the audacity to believe that Obama can do it . . . Obama taught me that!

I really dont see why educated people would even take anything this bigget says. Rev. Wright is a idiot for the comments that he made and he owes us all an apology.

Wright is an opportunist. Now he has a book on the way!

He looked the fool at the press corps event, playing to the crowd, shamelessly enjoying every second.
He behaved like a court jester.

Who is behind this man? It's a question that pops into my head when I see his next stunt; and his next. Have Hillary's people gotten to him...or McCain's?

Or is he so egocentric that he can not resist his 15 minutes of fame?

And the content of his message is shocking!

It's playing out as an American tragedy because once again, so much is at stake.
I think Obama could make a difference around the world on behalf of all U.S. citizens if given the chance.

I do not understand the lust for blood in this land. Hillary is a warrior as is McCain who rarely is seen without a decades old photo of himself clearly visable behind him.

More's the pity.

Confused,

I agree with you that Wright is not racist. But I do think he's prejudice. There is a huge difference between the two, and Wright would be more inclined to take the side of a black man over a white man no matter who is actually right. And from the manner of his speech and text, it's quite obvious that Wright is prejudice.

Wrightstinks,

You can't use Wikipedia as a source. So many bloggers do it and I don't know why. There are sooo many other sources that are far more credible and can be used in a college thesus or research paper. Here are one;

Its an encyclopedia. It used to be the main source of quick information, it came in a group of books that were all alphabetical and had numerous subjects that were bridged by real scientists and not your average joe shmoe web blogger.

Posted by: bqman | Apr 29, 2008 10:24:06 AM

Wright spews racial hatred and then accuses people of being racist and taking him out of context when they call him on it.

Have you noticed Barak Obama isn't giving a speech about not disowning him anymore. Instead he's hiding from the guy hoping he'll go away.

He'll never get elected. The problem is Barak listened to the guy for more than 20 years. He can't claim he didn't know. There's an old saying. "You are like those you associate with" He associated with Wright for 20 years.

Don't try to say "He was just one among 8000 members of the church" Barak is well educated and should have known to stay away from people like this.

Posted by: JD | Apr 29, 2008 9:59:54 AM

Rightsux you went to wikipedia of all sources, you cant write an academic paper and use that as a source, so come again. So, i would be racist to say black people are more likely to have sickle cell anemia while white people are more likley to get Paget's disease

Posted by: Confused? | Apr 29, 2008 1:49:08 AM

Confused and for those others who say Wright is not racist:
Here is the definition of racist taken from Wikipedia

Racism is a belief system or doctrine which postulates a hierarchy among various human races or ethnic groups. It may be based on an assumption of inherent biological differences between different ethnic groups that purport to determine cultural or individual behaviour.

Wright believes whites and black are different biologically. He also made fun of white speech, bands, rhythm and more. There is your proof.

what do you mean, what has he said thats racist? Do you have a tv? Do you watch it? How could you ask, "what has he said that is racist?" If a white person would have said any of the things that he's said against so many people including past leaders, presidents, cultures, and other americans, there would be fallout from every race and culture in the United States. But he is Reverend Right gets away with it because he's black. I don't know where you have been. Takin a trip to outer space lately?

See again i ask this and you cant put in quotes what he said that is racist, he talks about the dark days of America many white people had said this before. MLK took a stand about this issue ans was criticized for it he lost his support in the media. It didnt matter whose mouth it came from, look at your own comments he gets away with it because he is black. that is full of prejudice there but again this doesnt only go to you. You cant throw such a heavy word around so lightly because its convenient to discredit someone who you dont agree with. He has people of a different hue in his congregation. So, please come again.

My question is for the people who say that this man is racist. What is it that he said that is racist. Also to those who say he is anti-american, Thomas Jefferson says democracy cannot survive without dissent. This is a founding father saying that. If you dont like him thats your choice but to call the man racist is extreme. You may feel offended but he didnt put race into there you did? So, that is my question and i see every time someone ask to point to where he has said racist remarks the question is usually ignored anyway.
Assalamu Alaikum (May Peace be With You)

Jeremiah Wright is a lunatic!! all he is is an extreme racist pretending to give a point and saying,"im not racist". Ya, whatever man. Get some help. Now, I don't usually stand up for people, but when he calls people like, "Garlic Noses", and picking on Jews, thats when I get mad and say something. I know how it feels to be discriminated and mistreated because of my race. I am white and in high school and had to put up with being discriminated against because i lived in a heavily populated African-American community. But, as far as im concerned, Rev. Wright, or should i say, Rev. Wrong, is in a whole lot of crap with God right now. Preaching this kind of crap is not what God wants. Ya, people may say, "its freedom of speech". Well, if it were a white pastor or revrend, he would have been in trouble a long time ago. All in all Rev. Wright is a gigantic racist lunatic and i hope it really hurts Obama. GO HILLARY!!!

Posted by: Alex | Apr 29, 2008 12:31:30 AM

The REV Wright said that, Obama was saved, sanctified and filled with the holy ghost. Yet Obama believes it is perfectly ok for not just abortions but partial birth abortions? This does not coincide with what the bible teaches us. It more coincides with what the bible teaches about everyone that says Lord Lord will NOT reach the kingdom of heaven. Or they will be judged by the fruits they bear. If the news had not let it be known that he went to Wright's church for 20 years would the general public have even known this from his life style or speeches? I wouldn't have! He reminds me of a Chameleon... he changes his colors when he needs to succeed.

ABC News has committed it's front page and much more to mis-describing the speech that Reverend Wright delivered and no resources to making the actual speech available; with which individuals could make their own determination of its merits or lack thereof.

The link to outside servers (second paragraph) connects to servers that are unavailable; likely due to and over-load of connect attempts. FYI.

"Africans and African-Americans are right-brained, subject-oriented in their learning style," he [Wright] said. "They have a different way of learning."

But ... Obama's left-handed, which MEANS right-brained, doesn't it?? Must be his WHITE side. (This is all so darned dumb. Wright also said blacks have five tones and whites have seven. I think Mr. Wright was jiving these people -- none of whom is going to say a mumbling word, for fear of being labeled "racist" -- and more power to him for THAT.)

Posted by: Belle Starr | Apr 28, 2008 4:40:51 PM

vukasika,
The Clinton's have always supported black issues, nothing has changed today; Hillary's platform still puts minorities and those who struggle at the top of the list of importance in America. Yes, you are right, the black community didn't have to support Bill. They had a choice. They could have supported Bob Dole. I can promise you how much Dole would have supported the black community. The Clintons are the ones who are getting slapped in the face. And you know something, when Hillary gets into office, she will turn the other cheek and continue to fight for black issues and the advancement of blacks and all other minorities in this country without a second thought. You all should be ashamed!

"Africans and African-Americans are right-brained, subject-oriented in their learning style," he [Wright] said. "They have a different way of learning."
What? Are there genetic differences between white & black races? So, Rev. Wright, why does Obama speak English so eloquently? Is he a mutant?

Bill writes:
"I miss Jessie Jackson."

AMEN! If Jesse had followed his OWN politics, he would have endorsed John Edwards, instead of corporate fraud Obama, with his lukewarm "post-partisan" this and that, and his made-up biography, and it'd all be over by now.

Posted by: Belle Starr | Apr 28, 2008 4:28:32 PM

I find Reverend's Wright's behavior divisive and offensive. I am an African-American woman and a PK-Preacher's Kid. His behavior is a reminder of the divisive tactics and remnant behaviors of slavery. Right now he is doing a poor rendition of a house....

While he may have a right to want to lick his wounds for Obama the man. Where is the Christian counsel or compassion in his words? How do you seek to destroy as part of God's love and kindness. He is functioning on a carnal level. Did Christ, other than indicate that one of you will betray me, openly seek to prove his majesty on the cross. Then, who is Reverend Wright to feel as a Christian Minister that he is above the opinions of people.

The history of the black church is a rich one. In its pure sense it seeks to uplift the downtrodden, unite masses of people and to promote positive change thant can enhance the lives of people across the globe.

Is Reverend Wright above Ecclesiastes 3:1-8, to everything there is a season. Why is he so verbal now? Why in such a crucial time as this is he so public about his views?

He is acting as Mr. Wright-he has lost focus of the Wright Reverend.

We need change. I need to know my daughter can go to college. I need to know my nephews won't be forced into fighting in a war without cause. I need to know that I will have a pension when I retire. I need to know that education in America will improve. I need to know that violence against children will cease.

I don't need to know that similarly to the walk of most Christians, Reverend Wright felt persecuted.

I am outraged, disappointed and baffled by how we continuously do the work of our enemies and get in the way of the good works of a friend.

Obama's pastor said Blacks' Brains are different from Whites' Brains. This is racist and crazy.

He also said that Black children hop on desk-- this is so outrageous.

He make it sound like black children are frogs who can't control themselves in school.

Also how can you take out of context when obama pastor said the government invented HIV to kill off people of color? -this is racist.

Posted by: sb | Apr 28, 2008 1:31:00 PM

"If you listen to the original sermons in full, there's really very little to disagree with. It's amazing what a little context can provide."

Funny, Hugh Hewitt played them in their entirety, and there was a lot to take exception to.

Whereas Wright's defenders make this claim a lot, but never bother to provide any context. Just claiming it exists without bothering to try to show it.

And when the entire sermons are played? Context doesn't seem to help.

But it's certainly a popular defense. Quite a few comments in here try that defense.

How many of those actually show any of the "context" that would make Wright's statements acceptable? None.

Number of Wright's detractors who have made these sermons available in their entirety to show that "context" won't help?

Hugh Hewitt makes at least one... so that side seems to be in the lead.

So the resounding point being made is that Obama can't win because certain groups will not vote for him, because he's Black. DOES THAT MEAN THAT HILLARY ONLY WINS BECAUSE SHE'S WHITE? NOW BY A SHOW OF HANDS, WHO SAID RACISM DOESN'T EXIST! I WOULD HATE TO BE THE FIRST WOMAN PRESIDENT ONLY BECAUSE OF RACISM! I GUESS ONE GOOD WAY TO LOOK AT IT IS THAT WE ARE PROGRESSING IN SEXISM!

To tejasoutlaw:

You are really confused. Both candidates are slinging mud. The problem with the Clintons is they were so arrogant in the beginning of this race thinking they would win it easily, they didn't plan. They didn't underestimate Obama, they underestimated the people. Assumed it was in the bag. So many people know the game they play and how dirty they get when they are about to lose. It's gonna get even dirtier.
I'm a Democrat to the end but the Clintons should've planned better for this one.

James,

You apologists for racism and hate are truly astounding.

If Wright attended LBJ after a surgery, I'd say LBJ made a narrow escape through the grace of God.

And for the millionth time, Lee Harvey Oswald was a Marine. Serving in the US armed forces -- especially when the draft was in force -- is not a permanent get-out-of-jail-free card for racist lunatics.

It's a tired excuse. Please stop using it.

Posted by: ajmalkov | Apr 28, 2008 12:30:56 PM

Is America and any white person just pure evil just because of skin color?

Extremism speech distorts truth because it is motivated by personal agenda.

Why is no mention made of all the white people who have made the ultimate sacrifice so black people could have the freedoms they deserved?

I have white ancestors who died in the civil war trying to offer the black man, woman, and child their God-given right to freedom and to correct wrongs done to them. They were evil? They tried to keep black people down? Was that while they were gurgling in their own blood or when a bullet stole any hope of freedom or future from them or their families? Was that during the time they risked great harm or death to themselves and those they loved helping escaped slaves go north?

If we're going to talk history, it would seem the Reverand's view is, at the least, revisionist. We can't lump any one group of people together and label them because that is the height of ignorance. Yet, it would seem that truth is suspended when speaking of whites within this subject.

Much evil and much good is done by people of all different colors of skin. However, you cannot ask thinking people to suspend reality and substitute diatribe for truly thoughtful analysis and accuracy.

My ancestors thought freedom was worth dying for, so they died. This allowed black people to move forward. But let's not pretend it didn't cost white people anything.

People who won't vote for Obama are myriad in their reasons. Some will be racist; some will like another candidate's platform better; some will think a person who sits under vitriolic and extremism sermonizing for many years without turning away, may have agendas which are not balanced. That would be a fair reason to thoughtfully analyze the candidate and, perhaps, decide not vote for him. It doesn't make them "haters" but rather "thinkers."

At least today we are still free to ask these questions. I am guilty of being white but you will have to take it up with God. He created me this way.

Racism is an Autobahn of two-way traffic. I would advise anyone to exit and take a slower route of thoughtful, meaningful, and more enriching travel.

Posted by: A Thinking Person | Apr 28, 2008 12:23:45 PM

So, Jimmy the Greek from way back when, said that Blacks were physically built different (in a positive way) and he was called a racist. Wright says Blacks think differently from Whites and this is okay?? Is there proof of that? Obama needs to tell his uncle to keep his opinion to himself. Again, Rev. inspirational can't help himself, he has to insult at least someone in his speeches--this should get Obama votes in MA.

"Good lord, how much do we need to hear. Wright basically said that Africans have different brains than Europeans. All Africans are right brained; all Europeans are left brained. Had a white person said anything close to this, it would be a scandal.

Wright is a racist, literally. this man is a confused disgrace. Did you mention that Wright said Michelle would be the first black woman to sleep in the White House legally? OMG!"

hmmm the remarks on cognitive and adult learning were studies dating back to the late 50's and 60's. Africans and Europeans dont have different brains, let's get real!. . They have different ways of learning. Different is not dificient it is just different. I would also submit that this difference is readily evident in our childrens early learning as well. So many are categorized as ADD, instead of probably they learn different!

People will think what they want to, and hear what they want to hear. I myself know what i see everyday and know what it is like to be a minority living in america. What he has shared is mild compared to the speeches of MLK for his time. Taken in their proper context in the 50's and 60s those were HIGHLY INFLAMMATORY!

I have read many who apparantly had their minds made up about Rev. Wright before actually listening to any speech in it's entirety. I am not an apologist, i am an educated HUMAN BEING, who has lived in Europe, Polynesia, and Asia, with the God given ability to think and reason on my own. I will just say a few things here and leave you all to your lives.

First: The speech was humorous, and I had to laugh because it is such a good example of Different not Deficient. People are so narrowly focused on him that they still didnt get the message. Europeans have always viewed different as deficient. Especially when the African continent was the subject. Lest we forget, when all of Europe was in the dark ages, it was the African and Islamic cultures that were literate and versed in philosophy and the sciences. UUh yeah i think some missed that point.

Secondly: To the lutheran minister who was invited to speak at a black church. Good for you! However, sir with all do respect (which usually means watchout cause im about to DIS RESPECT YOU) you sounded like you were saying "some of my best friends are black, or gay, or asian" lol... Sir, the most segregated time in america is every sunday at 11am! That is a fact! You may not want to admit it, because in your world it probably isnt, but for many black christians of all denominations, being welcome to worship in a predominantly WHITE church is not something that happens on a regular basis. And no i am not talking about the deep south, cause quite frankly blacks gave up worshipping alongside white neighbors decades ago. no i am talking about in the north, midwest, west, etc. There are small pockets of diversity in some denominations, but that also reflects the communities themselves, as well as the social economic status of the worshippers. Would you not agree? I mean seriously, how many AME Bishops have you invited to speak at your services? Yeah I thought so. I served in the military for 20 years, and church on base was also reflective of church in the community. There was a separate GOSPEL Service. Ok in the military one could just not go out of their way to say BLACK or African American, so they say GOSPEL service. most understood that to mean a black service. Yet it was very diverse, and everyone was welcomed!.Look around your own communities and attend a black church service. You will find that you are WELCOMED and invited to come back as often as you like. Blacks dont try that with white churches, because they feel so out of place when they attend the services..one last thing on this, I have a friend who is from Scotland, and married to a Naval officer. I invited her to my church services, and she told me after, that "I have never felt so at home and like I belonged" it helps tremendously when you attend a service that the people in the pews and on stage look like you, and come from all walks of life, young and old. She felt that because the church's congregation was DIVERSE and it's method of delivering the message was Different!

lastly, did anyone actually think about what he was saying at all? I mean were you listening, and not trying to analyze or disect it? What was so Racist about his remarks and commentary? What was so polarizing? I found it to be informative and humorous, because it poked fun at AMERICA's own bias! A boston dialect and a southern drawl are so accepted in our society that when we hear a person speaking in ebonics (and no i do not support it) or PIDGIN english (they speak it big time in Hawaii and yes that is part of the united STATES last i checked) we look down on them as being less than or some what DEFICIENT..hmmm why is that? If you listenend to the speech at all, he was challenging this thinking. Different is not bad it's just different! Since when in america did that become a source of polarization? on second thought i already know the answer to that, when ships arrived at eastern ports carrying human cargo of a darker hue!

Lisa, Tee -

When this is all over, and historians look back on what happened during this campaign, I wonder what they will say...

All Hillary has to do is wait Obama out. His chickens are coming home to roost, one by one...

A Proud, Black Hillary Supporter
Rise, Hillary, Rise!'08

Krissyincarolina,
What racist stuff are you referring to?
Just what has Hillary, Bill or anyone else in their campaign said anything racist? Obama camp has cried racism, and they are the only ones play the race card. Jessy did well so we expect Obama to do well in the South. Was that the racist comment? Or was it Geraldine Ferraro that said he is lucky to be black and has taken full advantage of the situation. Obama said those same words himself.
Is he the only person that can comment on the fact that he is black and that it does have its advantages. Is he the only authority on race. Rev Wright caused his own problems, not the Clintons. Sounds to me like a little revers racism going on with you!

I feel that pastor Wright or any other pastor have the right to speak and preach what they want to preach.
That is there amendment right.
As any other pastor, preacher and Priest they have the right to voice what they want to preach. That is their message.

You as an American have the right to agree or disagree.

I do feel that racial comments as well, as forcing people to denounced their religion, beliefs, friendship is wrong and unjust.

When other political, high power European men were affiliated and involved with the wrong kind of people, no one told them to denounced their friendships, or step down from the political office.

NO, I do not feel that two wrongs make a right. But, no one has proven what Pastor right speaks has to do with what Barack Obama speaks. Pastor Wright's language has nothing to do with Obama's language. Ther are Two different MEN.
Who was not raised by Pastor Wright under the leadership of Pastor Wright.
The story I see is Pastor wright was taken out of context and his repuatation and chuurch attack and now he is on a mission of defending himself and the people who try to destroy him

NO one is making a big deal out of a woman drinking on world wide national TV. I feel drinking and drugs are wrong and especially with out teens and young people today. Seeing a highly status political person and a woman in a bar, drinking beer and taking liquor shots was not a good political move to me. Personally, I do not want a political leader that is kicking it with the "boys." Especially, When we have children and teens watching TV and are easily influence by our political future president being "cool" and children are hurting or dying behind a wheel or killing innocent people because they see Hilary Clinton drinking it.

But, no media played that all weekend or weeks to come. Do you ask yourself the question, "Who do you want to answer the 3 a.m. phone call????” and I answer "I hope they are not drunk!!!!"

I feel Obama is being attacked and because of the color of his skin and also being set up by the Republicans and Hilary Clinton party as well as
setting up the American voters up to destroy him by other peoples actions and not his own.

You have not found one thing in Obama life that makes him a bad person. He has done nothing but apologize to Hilary and Bill Clinton for other people actions, his pastor, his grandmother, his father, and...

Obama has no political right to what rev. Wright preaches, states, or speaks.
He is his pastor and not his political campaign manager. He is his friend. He is not judging him and he does not agree to what everything he says as much as he and America do not agree to what Hilary Clinton says and do to Obama.
But, Obama continues to forgive her and apologizes to her.
My personal opinion is Hilary is running scared and she is trying to scare America into believing what Obama is not.

Another question has anyone asked other presidents to denounced their friends, even the one that harm our country today and cause over 4000 deaths of our men and women and innocent children during this war?????

I am not surprise but ashamed that in this day and time the year 2008, we as black people are not black Americans and are still living under the racial political shame of proving we are American first and not black American people.

What message are we sending to our children today, black, white, red, brown, yellow, and all...?
Does racism still exist, is it o.k. to covered up the hidden and racial remarks to another person of color, a black man.
The remark made by the media, somewhat stated "I am glad to see he found a sport he know and not bowling and striking out, now a black man cannot bowl but he can play basketball. I thought Tiger Woods squashed those stereotypes when he played golf and never identify himself as black or white. that black people do not understand the political terms, but lets put it in the basketball sport terminology to explain it to the American people???, who?
that everything is still in black and white, and oh yeah gray is gray which is o.k. We don’t touch that area. Such as, the incident with drinking in the bar because everybody drinks and that make it o.k. Or dealing with president Clinton down faults of the sexual question the people asked Eventhough we as taxpayers paid for that investigation but that is not open for discussion, but that too is o.k.

I commend Obama for the man he is and does not allow this narrowed minded political mess that affect who he is, and that is a man first and a man trying to make a difference in this American world. As another man I most admire Dr. Martin Luther King that made History through non-violence and staying focused on the mission.

I feel Obama from day one because of the colored of his skin and his name and
Where he was born and running this political race for who he is, is challenge in itself for him to get out the gate, not even running the race. But I hope the American people see the roadblocks that the evil and devilish people are putting before him, and keep their eye on the prize.

As to Hilary who continue to make her racial comments about Obama preacher and Obama has more money, Obama want talk to me, Obama made the racial comments first, and Obama is not equal to her, (I do not remember reading or seeing her in any war, and the Ohio voting polls running out of paper and voting problems, does this sound familiar. As well as attacking Obama in every angle she can. Now, Who is complaining and cannot stand the heat.

Remember, Hilary Clinton was a republican first, she was born a republican, and come from a family history of republicans. Her negative attack system is not about the political warfare of our children and education, jobs, medical benefits, and bringing our troops home. It is about Obama warfare and by any means necessary she is going to see that he is destroyed.

I feel the people are getting tired of the negativity from Hilary, the emotional roller coaster, and all the complaining. She complains she has no money and complaining Obama will not sit down and talk to her after the 20th debate. I would like to know home many times has she talked to the republican side. Again, I asked whom side is she on. Does Hilary realize this fight against Obama is personal to the democratic American people as the people of color and after the election there is a tomorrow.
And the people will remember this, as it will go down in history, as we celebrate Dr. King legacy.

My thought today, I will always love President Clinton and he will always be my president, as Kennedy was my mother's president. They are real democrats.
But, I pray for Hilary and Pray Obama does not stomped to Hilary's racial and political tactics.

We need a better President than this and I know many will not vote for Obama because he is black, but i will not vote for a person because he is white, i vote for what is right in that person.
But, if Obama is not running against McCain for President, Hilary will not get my vote.

Another, Those supporting Obama-are so blind. He totally contradicts himself time and again. 1st, he states (wrongly I might add) that he was raised by his single mother. 2nd, He was raised by his grandparents (which is a fact). All you need to do is read his book. At least Hillary has the courage to admit error. She faces it, not runs away from it like Obama-who wants to seem like he is perfect -yet he was a drug addict. He says he quit smoking-yet he still smokes. He did not have a good relationship with his Mother. The book should have actually been: "dreams of my Mother" because his father was an absent figure. More things are gonna come out about him, that will destroy his character, his political career as well as his marriage unless Michelle did not mind.

Im so sick of this presidential race already, and im not a big political person. I personally hate all the bickering going on between Obama and Clinton. Just to let you know I am going to vote for Obama, not because hes black, but because I feel he is trust worthy and will do good for the nation. Im so sick of the race card being played. I wish we could totally get rid of all this labeling that we have in this country. Are you black, white, hispanic, rich, poor, etc. God dam it we are AMERICANS. Clinton and Obama should just quit bikering and focus on the country. I personally dont think Clinton is trustworthy at all, she did say If Iran attacked us or our allies that she would "Obliterate" them. Is it just me or is obliterate a very VERY VERY harsh word. She reminds me of the Elve Queen in Lord of the Rings, Galandira when Frodo offers her the ring. She becomes this very evil person. And says that all will find her beautiful and that all shall love her and all will bow down before her.
In all aspect of this whole political race I think its a disgrace to the country to have two candidates that bicker and dont focus on the BIG PICTURE. "Making this country great for all."

Bill Clinton did NOT comment as a racist or even close to being a RACIST comment. It's a darn shame on Obama but more so Jesse Jackson for making Bill look as if he was speaking in codes. Bill Clinton has done so much, as has Hillary. Now, they have buckled under pressure under Obama's campaign and Obama himself, that they need to be behind him because he is a "brother". They have turned on Hillary, those that supported her, then betrayed her. However, this is how you know who your true friends are-as your enemies. They will all have their Karma back to haunt them. Hillary is going to be nominated. Of course those that have the "audacity to hope" that Obama wins will be very disappointed that the Kool-aid they drank from was nothing but an unrealistic, unexperienced politician that needs time to be a better one. He is no different. Yea, this Wright issue is biting him on his bony arse. Obama is a fake, as wright is slowly laying it out there. Obama should GET OUT now, before he is destroyed-there is more to come out his closet.

vulaski,
i have not seen your name on this post before-so you did not read the comments of the aa lady who lived in the district obama rep. and see the long list of what he did not do for the people there.
sen. clinton had a new yorker in one of her town hall meeting-ask the question about the jobs-and sen. clinton gave what was an answer that satisfied the woman from buffalo. her answer made sense
Obama is not the one for the economy right now. and it is no getting around that.

I am a white woman who was strongly supportive of the Civil Rights Movement and continue to be dedicated to diversity and inclusion. I raised three sons to judge everyone as individuals and made sure that they knew who Dr. Martin Luther King was and knew about the struggles which occured in the civil rights movement.

When I went to work as a counselor in a middle school in inner city Kansas City fifteen years ago, I worked with some wonderful African American teachers and met wonderful people and their children. I am not and never have been in denial about how unfair things have been for them but I was disappointed that there were many who were teaching their children not to forget or forgive. Both groups of people need to work to understand and forgive each other.

I am a Hillary supporter but I do love the concept of a biracial leader who can bring us all together.

Posted by: JRoth60 | Apr 28, 2008 11:21:00 AM

I am a white Lutheran minister and had the pleasure of preaching at a prodominately African American church yesterday. However, there were people of all races there. Turns out we all clap to the same beat and sing to the same beat--the beat that is led by the Spirit. We also hear the same Good News--the same Gospel that points to the same Jesus and his cross. Turns out with Christ there is no longer Jew or Greek, slave or free, woman and man anymore. That is what a Christian is to confess. I invite Dr. Wright to come and see how it can be when people of all races get together for good.

How could not rotten to the core? How do you speak a postive message to your own souls when you mock people for they way that God made them? How do you ever have a single postive thing happen in your life when you are bitter and racist? To those of you mocking Obama for his race I pray for you. Nothing good will come to you until you put something into the universe. I am sure your lives are not going well. you can change it and stop rotting your souls. I honestly pray for you. I am so sad for you - you must be so miserable.

kissincarolina,
the clintons never started the race crap.obama and co. did.
they knew they had to get the race card in there somewhere to get the black support from sen. clinton.
there was no advantage to the clinton
to play the race card. only to obama
and if you are talking about the often refered to comment of bill about jesse winning sc. and obama doing well in sc.
how is that racist?
obama needed to get the black vote away from the clintons and some of the blacks wanted an excuse-not a real reason but an excuse to vote for obama-without knowing anything about him except his face is black.
once again explain to us how bill clintons remark about obama and jesse was racist?
and bill and hillary clinton have had a whole lifetime of really trying to level the playing field for all people especially black people.
obama as far as i can tell has done what he has done for black people for politcal positioning.
obama and what he has done for black people
barely come up to what the clintons have and even after all this is over will continue to do to help black people.
and i am aa.
the clintons have always tried to work in concert with the black establishment
obama and his crew can on the scene and said we do not want to hear from you what you have to say is old school.
he has caused a division in the black community-because hillary supporters had better be quiet-because obama supporters will threaten them-this i have witnessed for myself.
so your reason for deserting the clintons is of course your own but i just wanted to say-the clintons did not desert the black community and never will-no matter what clyburn says.
the black community deserted the clintons-and it is a shame.

Steve my point entire. 32 years married to Bill is not political experience. Would you allow your physician's spouse to diagnosis your children simply because he or she was married to a doctor for a number of years. Its just time together. But please in the true spirit of a Clinton support feel free to change the metric of how we measure candidate qualification.

Posted by: vukasika | Apr 28, 2008 11:10:13 AM

I do not appreciate Rev. Wright, even if some of what he says is grounded in truth. Retirement came just in time. He has had his say, and should shut up now, before any more damage is done. I look forward to either Obama or Clinton finally winning the race, and all of the noters before me finally getting together behind one or the other Democrat--for the good of our nation.

Posted by: Marcel Carroll | Apr 28, 2008 11:08:03 AM

jgaw nice try at spin. I did not state who did what. I stated very clearly that Obama has more time as an elected official. Please don't rise to half a challenge. Ask the good folks of Buffalo who she promised 50,000 new jobs but who have actually lost 80,000 jobs since she became their Senator.

Please allow me to throw a few pearls before you. Hillary has been an elected official for 7 years. Obama has been an elected official for 9 years. GW was in office for 5 years prior to his presidential bid and Reagan for 7 years before his presidency.

In am amazed at how many folks prefer to wallow in ignorance rather than allow a few facts to invade their brain.

That's right when you can not defend Wright or Obama - BLAME Bill and Hillary. Typical!

Two candidates are running against one another, so the answer is "no" we can't all get along. When there are two sides with different views there is going to be conflict.

You are CRAZY and making no sense.
What the heck are you talking about?

Posted by: sjd763 | Apr 28, 2008 11:01:20 AM

As long as we keep letting race and racism divide us we all will get nowhere. Yes - I am black and firmly supported Hillary until they started the racist crap. How dare they spit in the face of the group that gave them the strongest support. I do not think they can be trusted. I cannot support her and I am sad about that. hillary need to remember that when the clintons we in the white house they brough the heat into the kitchen from their actions and scandals. It was black people that helped them down the heat down. It is the clintons fault that they lost the black vote. I cannot imagine anything that she could do to regain trust. I NEVER thought the clintons woudl use race to win an election - NEVER. It is a very painful lesson. The black church rocks! Stop by a
