Stormy Weather

April 10, 2008 10:34 AM

An argument pushed by the campaign of Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, is that Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, has not been fully vetted.

As Clinton-backing Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell told us last week "she's been really well vetted, all the bad stuff is by and large out there, and there are no surprises. With Sen. Obama I think the right now he may run, a little stronger in some areas -- not the key states -- but in some areas against Sen McCain, but understand that he hasn't been vetted." Rendell said there was 10% about Clinton that "we don't know yet" and "about 50% about Barack Obama that we don't know yet."

Which brings us to William Ayres.

Ayres is Distinguished Professor of Education and Senior University Scholar at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and founder of both the Small Schools Workshop and the Center for Youth and Society.

He also spent the 1970s as a fugitive from justice, as a member of the Weather Underground, after the domestic terrorist group, preparing to attack an Army base, accidentally exploded a Greenwich Village townhouse killing three of their own members. Ayres later married feather Weather Underground member Bernardine Dohrn, then on the FBI's 10 Most Wanted List.

''I don't regret setting bombs,'' Ayres told the New York Times in 2001 upon publication of his memoir about that era, "Fugitive Days." ''I feel we didn't do enough.''

As celebrated members of the Chicago liberal world, Ayres and Obama have some connections.

They served on a board together when Obama was a state senator. Ayres donated $200 to Obama's campaign in 2001. They sat on a panel together in 2002 called "Intellectuals in Times of Crisis." Obama went to Ayres and Dohrn's home in 1995 to be introduced to some of the more influential liberals in the area by the state senator he was preparing to succeed, Alice Palmer.

(Palmer, who changed her mind about not running for reelection for her state senate seat after being defeated in a US House race, was later unable to get on the ballot because Obama challenged her petitions to do so, in some hardball Chicago-style politics, a whole other interesting story.)

"Bill Ayers lives in his neighborhood. Their kids attend the same school," Obama senior strategist David Axelrod told the Politico. "They're certainly friendly, they know each other, as anyone whose kids go to school together." (Ayres' kids are actually much older than Obama's but Dohrn is still active at the school.)

"We can relitiigate again and again these 40-year-old battles," Axelrod said. "He thinks what was done then was wrong and outrageous, and he believes that you can’t defend the indefensible – but he’s looking forward, he’s not looking back."

"Senator Obama strongly condemns the violent actions of the Weathermen group, as he does all acts of violence," Obama spokesman Bill Burton told the New York Sun when asked about the connection. "But he was an eight-year-old child when Ayers and the Weathermen were active, and any attempt to connect Obama with events of almost 40 years ago is ridiculous."

Is that enough for you? Perhaps it is. Perhaps you think this is all a silly political smear.

But should Obama get the nomination, what will moderate and swing voters in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Missouri think of it all? Will they think Obama is able to transcend partisan divisions if he's been supported by Ayres?

The proverbial Republican attack machine is chugging along on this -- see THIS CLIP from last night's "Hannity & Colmes" on Fox News, featuring Karl Rove making much hay out of this connection, however tenuous, and Ayres speaking at the University of North Dakota saying he doesn't regret anything he did against the government.

There is a tendency in the Obama campaign to not take these types of stories seriously. That is a "perfect world" approach to politics. In a perfect world, some might argue, we would be debating policy in Iraq, the economy and health care. We wouldn't have discussions about whether Al Gore claimed he invented the internet, or George W. Bush got a DUI in the 1970s, we wouldn't talk about Swift Boat Vet for truth claims that contradict official Naval records.

But that's not the world we live in. Yes, the mainstream media is complicit in that, but there are other forces at play. Paid TV ads, the internet, cable news, talk radio -- sources of information, and misinformation that have an impact on the electorate, necessitating that the mainstream media cover stories having an influence on the election even if they did not originate in the mainstream media. We of course are obligated to fact check them and deal with them responsibly and the mainstream media does not always rise to the challenge.

But campaigns have to know how to deal with such stories as well.

Former Sen. John Edwards, D-NC, has not endorsed Obama precisely because he worries Obama is not tough enough to deal with attacks such as these, such as the fact that this Ayres story is still out there, with very little pushback from Obama -- or even, frankly, any acknowledgment as to why some voters might not like the idea of Obama being friendly with a man such as Ayres.

This Stevenson-esque (Adlai, not McLean) regard for fighting these stories is likely a reason we haven’t seen a stampede of superdelegates over to Obama to end this never-ending primary season.

What do you think?

The character of the person is no longer important ot the Americans. There are pieces to a puzzle, and Obama's story...quite a bit are missing. Months ago, as I was doing my homework, mapping things out, who the candidates are...WHO THEY ARE...I did not, and still cannot find pieces to the puzzle who Obama is. In my opinion, for years, these certain group of people (who do not like or care about USA), groomed Obama to get in the oval office, so they can ease their way in destroying the United States of America inch by inch. Honestly, how was he able to finance himself through college, then Harvard? without student loans? How can someone very new in the political arena, for 4 yrs, and last 2 spent campaigning for a presidential seat? Candidates are required to disclose contributors to their campaign, Obama didn't turned in half of it. How did he get away with this? Who's responsible for allowing this to happen? Money talks, and I believe quite a few took the risk to the road of corruption..or is there something out there already 'REALLY BIG" that these people are forced to comply. SCARY...VERY SCARY! With this note, I stand brave, and I would like to be proven wrong...so, if there folks out there, common folks like myself, if you have found the missing pieces to the puzzle...prove me wrong.

HopingForABetterWorld said: False: Can we get on to issues of substance now. Please republicans stop weaseling out of debate on the real issues Americans care about like the economy, the occupation, health, education for our kids etc... What's that John is proposing $300 billion dollar bailout to the mortgage industry that conservatives hate and liberals see right through? Anything else???

Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid today, asked for another 300 billion goodie bag. The 300 billion Mr.McCain proposed, would come from the 700 billion already allocated, a few weeks ago. Mr.McCain also stated that he would rather see it for mortgages, then to the big boys in the big corporations.

I agree....this whole bail out isn't good....but we must remember, if we blame Bush for this...more Democrats signed onto it, then did Republicans. Why? We also need to keep in mind...Obama signed on, as well as McCain.

TradeMark 310, You don't sound to rational..I am not a small town person and I have done my research. Black or white has nothing to do with this election. I know each candidates proposals and I happen to think that big governmnet isn't the way for people to reach the American dream. Universal health care is scarey too(more government intervention and means more taxes). Did you know that 40% of the people DO NOT pay taxes? Obama wants to tax the people who supply the jobs to the other 55%. Every middle class person strives to be in than upper 5% but won't get there if the rich take there businesses out of the country because they won't let the government take 50% of their hard earned dollars. If they do stay, they will have to hire less employees because they can't afford salaries. Less jobs create a bad economy and so on and so on..Get the picture? I also care that when I did the research, I found that it wasn't just the ASSOCIATION that Obama had with the radicals(Rev. Wright, Ayres, Rezko, Flager, Rashid Khalidi, and yes it is all true, check it out)it was the PARTICIPATION with all....You need to be informed and that can be done by getting the facts yourself. Don't read blogs and biased material, get the facts.....

Mr. Mueller, Ayers probably is friendly but not open or he would step forward and fess us to his wrong doing. He injured serveral people when he bombed the Capitol, Pentagon and the NY Police Dept. He is an unrepentant domestic terrorist that never apologized for his actions, only said he was sorry he didn't do more. Stood on the American Flag in 2006 on the front of Time Magazine. And yes you are right about the Vietnam War, it was horror. Horror that John McCain had had every bone in his body broken to protect our freedom back home!! Yeah, The freedom of speech you just had, bad mouthing him, he paid the price for you to have it!!! And please, The Woods Organiztion funnels money to Acorn and they are both supposed to be a non partisan group which support Obama and some of our tax dollars go into those groups and so they should be non partisan. But, why wouldn't they support Obama? The Obama camp only donated $800,000.00 to Project Vote which is affiliated with ACORN who is now being investigated by the FBI for voter fraud. Obama's association is a problem but it's the participation with Rev. Wright, Bill Ayers, Tony Rezko, Flager, Acorn, Do you see a pattern here????? That is called POOR JUDGEMENT and when he makes excuses or lies about his connections, which he has, that is called CAN'T TRUST!

Lisa, You said Obama has faced many issues that those of us whom are middle class and low income are facing and that he as fought through oppression, low income, ailing family, minority. Well, I have been poor and too, upper middle class, and myself, husband or not one of our 4 now grown children(all who have high paying jobs now) were ever able to go to the finest schools that Obama has gone to. Where in the heck did he get the money?? Never heard if it came from grants or scholorships and he himself said he wasted time doing cocaine and not caring to do anything when he was in high school so you can imagine his grades upon graduating, so that would mean no scholorships, or grants and shouldn't have been let in from merit so explain, how does this education work?? My boys who are now engineers, one a chemical and the other electrical(who got his masters from UCLA in just one year)worked their behinds off, never got into prestigious schools as Obama who was a goof...Too many unaswered questions about him, sorry, and that has nothing to do with the fact that he is black..I do not object to a black man being our president, he just has to be the one that is deserving. Why not Colin Powell? He would have my vote tomorrow!!! Obama has no experience..He only served in the Senate a year before he was on the campaign trail for president... Catering to leftwing radical groups do not make you good presidential material. Check out Acorn and all his ties to this group who is now being investigated by the FBI and how much money his campaign has donated to this group that has been committing voter fraud and just so happens in mainly the swing vote states. I know alot of people say you shouldn't judge someone by association with others but hey, there are too many in his life that have turned out to be America haters(Bill Ayres who is a domestic terrorist and not 20 years ago, as late as 2006 standing on the flag on the cover of Time magazine), Reverend Wright (G--Damn America and his hatrd for white people! Would that be racist?), Farhacan,(don't even know and don't care that I can't spell his name correctly, who call Obama the next Mesiah)Rezko(dirty realestate deals),and the priest who spews hatred once again towards America. SCAREY

Does it really matter which party? I mean really. Clinton, whom posed as a democrat in order to become elected as the nominee for that party and later won the election under those pretenses, spreading his republican ways while posed as a democrat. History is full of these instances. It is a fact that no one is swayed 100% in any direction, there will always be some points that we whom hold party ownership see differently than those whom we elect to speak on our behalf.

The bottom line is that their will always be points we do not see eye to eye on but as I listen to the bickering and name calling and unbecoming behaviors I can not help to think about a time not so long ago when there was black listing.

So I am curious to know if all of this propaganda has a point. Propaganda in the fact that even though these things may be true, I do not see much rebuttal.

During the Senator Joe McCarthy era, with all of his right winged thoughts leading him in the direction that he thought was right. We forget the controversy that followed him and the outcome of him being removed from the Committee of Unamerican Behavior as well as him being publicly reprimanded.

This leads me to try to remember a time where Nixon got the choice to resign as president because of Watergate. A very famous scandal that had to do with parties drudging info up on opponents.

This has got to stop. It get to a point where one want to hear about what a candidate is going to bring to the table rather than the short comings of the opponent they are running against. Tell me what you are going to do to change my life not what you feel your opponent is lacking and how this person does not measure up.

I feel that this is not new politics, such as we are suposed to believe it is. We are not ready to turn a new page, and we are not ready to practice new politics.

McCain is wanting us to believe that things are going to change, that he is not like all those stuffy old politicians of the past yet he is reverting to the old ways of doing business, with all of his smear tactics.

So whom are we suposed to believe some one that is open about the things they have done or someone trying to deceive us and scare us. The current republican camp is becomeing more conservative as time passes this is just the era we are in. I think that if McCain is a strong enough candidate then why does he need to win pointing out the pitfalls of Obama. Why spend so much time and effort on pointing out all the ways he does not measure up.

Obama is everything we as the majority of the people can relate to. He has faced many issues that those of us "whom are middle class and low income" are facing right now. No experience is what the other party is claiming, but how can this be when he has fought through oppression, low income, ailing family, minority. All of these statuses in which the majority of us are facing. I think first hand knowledge of knowing what it takes to transcend above and beyond stereotypes and become a better person not because of money but from character. That is what we need.

I just think that even after 100's of years of wanting equality we as Americans are not ready for that. No matter how hard we fight it will always come down to pointing out each others differences. Lets try electing on each others merits. Rather than turning a blind eye to scare tactics and claiming that is just the way we do business. Accountability is a major factor and from where I see it Obama has corrected issues of concern as well as been very open to explaining his "less desirable behaviors." While McCain has continued to ambush him with more, never taking accountability for his grade school bully antics.

As far as the experience thing goes, no one except those that have been in that position of president has the experience. America does not want experience, because if they do they would have nominated Clinton, She was the only one with experience of the presidency.

And as for the Dixie Chicks or anyone else that chooses to express their opinion, whether or not others agree... is that not what America is all about, the freedom to express. As a matter of fact that is what the campaign is based on freedom of expression, freedom of speech, or does that have a limit as well?

This is just one persons opinion, whose tiered of all the negative tactic. To embrace true change one must be willing to stand up against the social flow of things and do what is right, not continue the same way of doing business. Lets write in Al Gore!

Posted by: Lisa | Oct 12, 2008 1:06:40 PM

Good Grief! The Dixie Chicks?? That is a group full of disrespect who uses their celebrity status as a means to degrade the USA! Even when Clinton was in office and did those deplorable things in the Oval Office, I gave him respect because he was our President, Our Commander in Chief. Anyone who would take on such a huge task for so little money shouldn't be critized until you have walked in his or her shoes... I believe the hatred all started with the Dixie Chicks!! And that saddens me because I was one of their biggest fans. You're better off to keep your mouth shut and let people think you're stupid then to open it and remove all doubt!!!

Posted by: cccajjj | Oct 12, 2008 12:53:56 AM

I don't have any objections to freedom of speech and free thinkers. That is part of what makes this country what it is. What I hate about our society is the fact that people do not educate themselves about what is truly going on (as best we can) and are so close minded. Our society is screwed up not only in part because of our leadership but because of the narrow minded thinking of people today. Of hateful people who refuse to take a step back from what they've been told their whole life and think about a different perspective. Everyone can have an opinion and a belief. If you are not capable of having a respectful discussion and taking a walk in someone else's shoes just to try and broaden your intellectual capacity then I believe you are a part of what makes this country full of hate with an inability to move forward. Look at the people who treated the Dixie Chicks the way they did when they spoke out about Bush. Now the majority of us are saying the same thing about him. They went as far as to make death threats to those women. How incongruent is that thought process!! People in this country don't think before they act or speak. Have your thoughts and feelings about what people say or do but to extend hateful acts says a lot about your character. Have a little self respect and respect for human life.

I did some research...Obama and Ayres go back 20 years. Michelle went to work for a law firm where Bernadine Dohrn(Ayres wife) worked and Dohrn was her contempory!!!This was back in the 1980's....Obama was appointed by Ayres to be the executive chairman of the board of the group "Chicago Annenberg Challenge" to distribute $50 million for education which Obama gave to radical groups like ACORN. Acorn is now being investigated by the FBI for voter fraud. Obama started off by training the people who work there and was also their attorney before he ran for office. Obama's campaign also donated several hundred thousand to this organization all over America. Guess where all of this voter fraud is happening? All swing states....No concerns for associations??? So much info to report and no room to write....

Good grief> Obama says that he "picks his friends carefully." He's either a liar or a fool. In fact, he's clearly both.
All I want to know is why Ayers and his delightful little wife, Bernadine, aren't awaiting an Obama presidency so he can pardon them and get them out of prison instead of being professors at otherwise prestigious institutions. These two are murderers.
Obama doesn't just "pal around", he works hand in glove with and accepts money and support from Ayers.
I wouldn't say that Obama has bad judgement. Heck, he hangs around with people whose ideas and proclivities and hopes for change are the same as his own. THAT'S what bothers me about Obama.

Obama and his people keep avoiding the truth.

You are absolutely delusional. Don't let the truth get in the way of a good story.

The McCain campaign did not respond Saturday to a request for elaboration on Palin's use of the plural "terrorists."

Verdict: False. There is no indication that Ayers and Obama are now "palling around," or that they have had an ongoing relationship in the past three years. Also, there is nothing to suggest that Ayers is now involved in terrorist activity or that other Obama associates are.

Keep trying to distract and throw mud in your opponent's eye. Especially when you look at the slime that you are trying to defend. Your parties candidate is a loser and the only way you can defend him is to attack the other guy. After all its the republican way.

Obama and his people keep avoiding the truth. They accuse McCain of supporting Keating, but Keating was not trying to blow up government buildings or kill people. One comment by trademark310 stated he was voting for Obama and what do we think of that? Well, I think that makes him a radical hugger as well! Obama states he was only 2 yaers old when Ayres was doing his thing, well I was a small child during WW2, but I did not grow up wanting to be friends with Nazi's. Obama could have resigned when he found out, but he didn't, did he?

I was told as a young boy: That in order to talk about someone else's house being dirty, make sure yours is clean. McCain and Palin need to check themselves out before they sling mud at Obama. We do not live in a perfect world, and we ourselves are not perfect. Both Mccain and Palin have so much dirty laundry in their closets, shovels wouldn't clean it out you will need a back hoe. I have heard Obama talk about things he has done in the past that he is not proud of; what hs McCain denounced from his past. The bottom line is that negative connotations serve no useful purpose; how you deal with present matter is what is important. Each week I pray that both McCain and Obama be granted the wisdom to use their intellect and influence to straighten out what has been going wrong in the past eight years.

Ayers will most likely have a lot to do with Obama's decision making if he becomes President. I fear that if Obama is elected as our leader, we will become a Third world country by the time he is out of Office. I'm supposed to clap now that he wears the American Flag pin, right?

Posted by: Janet | Oct 9, 2008 10:51:15 PM

You small town people keep asking people to make up their own minds? OK, I made mine up, I'm voting for Obama. What do you have to say to that? What name will you call me? Who's influence am I giving into?

If you are "scared" of what Obama will do, you are predjudice. You feel unsafe with a non-white at the helm. Ten to one odds say your parents used to say racist stuff when you grew up. And you want Obama supporters to "think for themselves"?
You middle American people have no perspective, you think all of America is like you, and those that are different are to be feared. Oldest story in the book, wake up and stop telling us rational people to "think".
