Surrogate Watch, Part 676

April 08, 2008 4:23 PM

Following Obama-backing Sen. Jay Rockefeller's impugning of Sen. John McCain's sensitivity because he killed Vietnamese from a distance -- "McCain was a fighter pilot, who dropped laser-guided missiles from 35,000 feet. He was long gone when they hit. What happened when they [the missiles] get to the ground? He doesn't know. You have to care about the lives of people. McCain never gets into those issues" -- come:

1) An Apology to McCain from Rockefeller

As reported in the State Journal, Rockefeller phoned McCain to say sorry. In a statement, he wrote: “I have deep respect for John McCain’s honorable and noble service to our country. I made an inaccurate and wrong analogy and I have extended my sincere apology to him. While we differ a great deal on policy issues, I profoundly respect and appreciate his dedication to our country, and I regret my very poor choice of words."

2) Another Call for Obama to Condemn the Remarks

On Fox News, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-SC, said, "I hope Senator Obama will comment on this. I hope he will step up to the plate and say, 'You know whatever differences I have with Senator McCain, this is out of bounds. I don't question his humanity.' You know, John McCain was a fighter pilot assigned his missions by the United States Navy and I can't think of a more noble thing to do for your country than to fight for freedom and to serve in uniform. So John will move on, but I hope Obama will comment on this."

UPDATE: Oama spox Tommy Vietor: "Senator Obama has a deep respect for Senator McCain’s service to this country and doesn’t agree with what Senator Rockefeller said.”

You can tell that the republicans are salivating at the prospect of an Obama nomination because Fox News this past week has stepped up its attacks on Clinton.

Will the DNC be able to focus on winning in November or will they promote Obama - who will be responsible for the third straight presidential loss - in an election that would have been the Democrats to lose. We'll see.

jake51...

McCain knows exactly what he is doing....Hillary has not been allowed to attack Obama or question him on anything..media bias..McCain does not want to get in the same position..

He is setting the tone. Obama insisted on Federal Financing...broken promise.

Everytime Obama attacks and it will be every day just like he attacks Hillary every day...McCain will shake his head and say...."Barack this is not the "politics of hope" I'm disappointed"....McCain is the adult...Obama is the petulant child..STRATEGY

Then McCain turns the Republican attack machine lose on him in September...and he'll shake his head and say...I warned him to stop these attacks and keep his promises now the dogs are lose..And McCain will shake his head and say I really tried early on to stop Obama from these shoddy and false attacks.I am totally against these types of attacks, but since Obama didn't take them seriously when they were against me...I can't stop them when they are against him.....Strategy

The Republicans are thrilled that it looks like Obama may get the nomination...they know the story that is not getting told in the mainstream media...they can't wait to start the ball rolling.

Did McCain and Hillary vote for the War?

Did Obama make the statement?

Answers 1st question: yes 2nd question: no

Let's be accountable for our actions; shall we?

Obama already made the statement that he disagrees with Rockefeller, to apologize for Rockefeller would be making a statement that Rockefeller was speaking for him which is not the case.

Nothing rude in my statement if they want to vote like they did then should be able to take the criticism. Nothing like personal responsibility.

Why do I have to respect these guys anyway.

Posted by: Thinking | Apr 8, 2008 10:12:53 PM

@ thinking

That is just rude and very disrespectful. I think Obama should apologize for every time he has said he has always been against this war and this war shouldn't have be waged because he was singing a different tune in his book and when Kerry was running for President.

Talk about pandering for votes!

McCain and Hillary have to give personal apologizes but Obama sends his spokesperson to do his job!

McCain wants a personal apology, perhaps McCain, along with Hillary ought to give a personal apology to the families of the over 4000 men and women killed, and over 30,000 wounded, and the all the military that keep going back 3-4 rotations, riping apart their families, for a war of choice.

I detest Bill and Hillary Clinton. But, I do have to admit, she is getting the short straw in media coverage. So much is out there about Obama that isn't being reported. So very much.

But at least Hillary is staying in and, in so doing, is shredding the party. Good news for people who care about issues rather than assertions.

Kevin claims to be a staunch Obama supporter, but also claims he'd vote for Clinton, according to one of his posts yesterday. He pretty much did the same thing yesterday, deteriorating into a blabbing fool and then checking out.

In all seriousness, how do people hang on to the idea of hope, change and a new kind of politics but can't seem to engage in healthy debate and avoid denigrating everyone and their brother who is not in support of Obama? Are they listening to their candidate at ALL?

Whining and crying like a bunch of f*ckign babies. I mean, McCain the warrior is crying about old man Rockefeller bruising his feelings and you suckers are agreeing with that bullshit. So what is he exactly? A warrior or a bitch?

Posted by: Kevin | Apr 8, 2008 6:56:58 PM

Rockefeller's statement was not a good one, and it will likely hurt Obama a bit. Not enough to matter, though, if it remains isolated.

The McCain push-back is what concerns me. Seems they think that ANY criticism of their candidate by ANYONE entitles them to get all whiney and crotchety. It was a simple statement that should not have been made. But bringing up again the Ed Schultz statement that McCain is a warmonger -- which he certainly is according to the definition -- may hurt McCain in the long run.

There are any number of reasons why McCain should not be president, including his age and his inflexibility, along with his quick adoption of Bush/Cheney politics in the run-up to this campaign.

As a Vietnam Veteran -- and a Veterans for Kerry coordinator locally in the last election -- I would prefer that Senator Obama and his surrogates not take pot shots such as the one Senator Rockefeller took today, no matter how much of it was justified. It just encourages push-back that we don't need.

It would be better for all of us if the candidates and their surrogates stick to the issues.

Obama 2008 -- Yes, WE CAN!!!

This political correctness is meaningless and absurd.

Rockefeller owes no apology. McCain does not deserve one. The Obama campaign is foolish to even engage. This entire commentary is what's known as freedom of speech and the tolerance to allow it.

Everyone needs to enroll in Rhetoric 101 to distinguish between real, imagined, fabricated and false public discourse and fact. Most of these comments are worthless.

To quote Wm. F. Buckley and JFK: Move forward.

Posted by: hypatia | Apr 8, 2008 6:01:58 PM

One SENATOR makes a comment about another SENATOR and then apologized.
END OF STORY!

Obama HAS ALWAYS made policy statements, and HAVE ALWAYS AVOIDED critical personal statement about opponents!
Moreover, Barack Obama has made that policy clear from the start.

Over the campaign cycles, American politicians have been nasty to each other.

And that momentum of personal attacks has carried over to this campaign by supporters (from ALL sides) who are having problems changing their ways to match the more dignified stance of Senator Obama's!

Posted by: New Yorker | Apr 8, 2008 5:59:49 PM

Obama is too arrogant to apologize to McCain because obama thinks he does no wrong and if one of his endorsers or supporters "misspeaks" then so be it. The words didn't come out of obama's mouth so he feels he doesn't have anything to apologize for.
This so called person is the most arrogant SOB that has diddled this country in a long time - I think that G.W. Bush is more honorable that this piece of creepy horse pucky.
A president of the US who actually condones insults to the US veterans, who have given their lives for this country.
obama wasn't even in the military - he doesn't even say the Pledge of Allegiance -
This "person" cannot become the President of the USA. He will not be elected because he is unpatriotic, hates the white population, takes advise from the Reverend Wright and is totally Un-American.
John McCain is the next President of the USA.
Obama continues to divide not only the Democratic Party, but he has divided this Nation and put us back post MLK and before the Civil Rights Movement. Nice job obama - if you become president, how far back will you put the USA? You will put this country's needs behind those of your favorite African Country.
Get out of this race obama - you are not wanted here nor needed.

Every night all three candidates should go on television and be told what their supporters said during the day and then give them a chance to denounce the statement. When is this going to stop. Sen. Posted by: J | Apr 8, 2008 5:09:08 PM

Roxanne, Obama has to apologize because if you are going to gain the benefit of someone making a sales pitch for you, you have to be responsible for what that person says. McCain very responsibly denounced a conservative radio host (who at the time supported him) in Cincinnati a while back because he made a big deal about Obama's middle name. If Obama is not able to denounce the comments by Rockefeller, which are much more offensive, then to me that establishes him as someone who has less character in this respect than McCain.

Posted by: sdust | Apr 8, 2008 4:57:34 PM

Don't hold your breath waiting for an Obama apology. The man never apologizes for anything.

When are Obama supporters going to wake up and see him for the phony that he is. He plays dirtier politics than anyone I have seen in a very long time. The politcs of hope, change and a different atmosphere in Washington are a joke. Hey Obamaites - you've been bamboozled, the old okey doke has been pulled on you.

People with "deep respect" don't make extended comments like those. His statements do not lend themselves to, "I said something slightly different than what I meant." It wasn't a poor choice of words for Rockefeller, it was a poor choice of votes that put him into a position where he could say something so stupid.

Seriously, is his head so in the sand that he doesn't know about McCain's time up close and personal with the enemy? If nothing else, McCain should know what the repercussions are on our service men and women for being in harm's way.

Posted by: seah | Apr 8, 2008 4:52:16 PM

Why do any presidential candidate have to apologize for the remarks of others? We have something called the freedom of speech and unless the candidate says something out-of-line, they shouldn't have to constantly make any sort of concessions. What Rockefeller said is probably true and I am certain that McCain suffers from sort of psychosis (AS ANYONE WOULD!) for not only dropping bombs, but being tortured. He needs to be evaluated by psychiatrists and I am not trying to be condescending...how many times (he did it again today) does it take to confuse sunni and shia before we all realize that he is mentally unstable? God bless him!
