Surrogate Watch, Part 676

April 08, 2008 4:23 PM

Following Obama-backing Sen. Jay Rockefeller's impugning of Sen. John McCain's sensitivity because he killed Vietnamese from a distance -- "McCain was a fighter pilot, who dropped laser-guided missiles from 35,000 feet. He was long gone when they hit. What happened when they [the missiles] get to the ground? He doesn't know. You have to care about the lives of people. McCain never gets into those issues" -- come:

1) An Apology to McCain from Rockefeller

As reported in the State Journal, Rockefeller phoned McCain to say sorry. In a statement, he wrote: “I have deep respect for John McCain’s honorable and noble service to our country. I made an inaccurate and wrong analogy and I have extended my sincere apology to him. While we differ a great deal on policy issues, I profoundly respect and appreciate his dedication to our country, and I regret my very poor choice of words."

2) Another Call for Obama to Condemn the Remarks

On Fox News, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-SC, said, "I hope Senator Obama will comment on this. I hope he will step up to the plate and say, 'You know whatever differences I have with Senator McCain, this is out of bounds. I don't question his humanity.' You know, John McCain was a fighter pilot assigned his missions by the United States Navy and I can't think of a more noble thing to do for your country than to fight for freedom and to serve in uniform. So John will move on, but I hope Obama will comment on this."

UPDATE: Oama spox Tommy Vietor: "Senator Obama has a deep respect for Senator McCain’s service to this country and doesn’t agree with what Senator Rockefeller said.”

You are right. I am a shining example of change. No more patience for bullshit. How about that? Grownfolks need to start acting like grownfolks, not wasting time disecting bullshit. Whining and crying like a bunch of f*ckign babies. I mean, McCain the warrior is crying about old man Rockefeller bruising his feelings and you suckers are agreeing with that bullshit. So what is he exactly? A warrior or a bitch?

Rockefeller's statement was not a good one, and it will likely hurt Obama a bit. Not enough to matter, though, if it remains isolated.

The McCain push-back is what concerns me. Seems they think that ANY criticism of their candidate by ANYONE entitles them to get all whiney and crotchety. It was a simple statement that should not have been made. But bringing up again the Ed Schultz statement that McCain is a warmonger -- which he certainly is according to the definition -- may hurt McCain in the long run.

There are any number of reasons why McCain should not be president, including his age and his inflexibility, along with his quick adoption of Bush/Cheney politics in the run-up to this campaign.

As a Vietnam Veteran -- and a Veterans for Kerry coordinator locally in the last election -- I would prefer that Senator Obama and his surrogates not take pot shots such as the one Senator Rockefeller took today, no matter how much of it was justified. It just encourages push-back that we don't need.

It would be better for all of us if the candidates and their surrogates stick to the issues.

Obama 2008 -- Yes, WE CAN!!!

True Truth - We think Kevin is the best example of Obama's change he's bringing to America. Come on Kevin, more. More! More! You are so intelligent. More examples. Encore! Encore!

Posted by: Dogsoldier | Apr 8, 2008 6:53:14 PM

Kevin - Big speech to say you agree with Rockerfeller. Why not just say it then? So, your writing is an example of your intelligence?

Posted by: Dogsoldier | Apr 8, 2008 6:49:10 PM

Kevin,
You are putting a whip to our behinds? What are you doing, hitting the keys extra hard? Ouch, ouch. Oh, hurt me some more. How does that help your candidate Obama? Oh, yeah, you must be one of those unconventional threats that Rockefeller will be dispatched to deal with.

Is Obama too arrogant to apologize?

Please don't play dirty to your opponents....

Anger and hatred only show how ugly you are indeed.....And both are committed SINS under the name of God..

So please be polite and nice anytime...

Posted by: True Truth | Apr 8, 2008 6:47:48 PM

Kevin,
I don't understand why you even blog here. You've previously declared that Obama has already won and Hillary has already lost. Did you not mean that? Why don't you prove you meant it? Why don't you just take it easy for the next few months until Obama needs for you to step up to the plate again? Just relax, go take a long nap. You deserve it.

Jackt51 - I have no problem defending McCain from so ugly a statement as Rockerfeller's. Perhaps Rockerfeller hurt Obama more than McCain and I actually think you may suspect that yourself.

Posted by: Dogsoldier | Apr 8, 2008 6:37:52 PM

I can't wait to see the WHIPPING Obama and the Dems are in for in November.
These jerks never learn!
Seem to have amnesia about the last election every 4 years!

Posted by: East Coast Airforce | Apr 8, 2008 6:37:49 PM

New Yorker,
I see you have not spared the competitor McCain of your venom either, and I quote you as follows:

New Yorker blogged: "However, John McCain is getting UP THERE IN AGE; so may be that is his excuse for pandering his military experience of ALMOST TWO GENERATIONS AGO!"

OK, let's recount: You attack based on gender, you attack based on age, based on military service? These are the politics of change?
=======================================
Are Obama and New Yorker too arrogant to apologize? We're waiting......"
=======================================

Posted by: WestCoastMessenger | Apr 8, 2008 6:17:10 PM

Limbaugh - Having swiftboat flashbacks to the Kerry campaign?

Posted by: Dogsoldier | Apr 8, 2008 6:16:58 PM

Hey DogSoldier,
This is what the hypocritical New Yorker said about Ferraro:

"Maybe Mondale did select the congresswoman on the basis of her gender. Little wonder he lost, it was obviously a dumb choice!"

But New Yorker wants us to disregard what Obama's surrogates say. Hmmm, do you think New Yorker is trying to pull a fast one?
=======================================
Obama, forget what he says!
Hillary all bad, Obama all good!
Where's the koolaid?
=======================================

Posted by: WestCoastMessenger | Apr 8, 2008 6:11:06 PM

LT,
He's trying to change the way Washington does business. Historically, Washington has not done business with Obama. He wants to change that. He wants Washington to do business with Obama. He's going to partner with the Washington outsider, Rockefeller, to achieve this.
=======================================
Obama and Rockefeller, partners in handling unconventional threats of all sorts
=======================================

Posted by: WestCoastMessenger | Apr 8, 2008 6:08:30 PM

And Obama and his supporters have the nerve to say anything about Hillary or McCain when he has people around him like Rockefeller.

Posted by: Melissa | Apr 8, 2008 6:07:31 PM

New Yorker - Obama avoids personal attacks? That's simply because he's such a coward Obama has to get his surrogates to do the heavy lifting for him.

Posted by: Dogsoldier | Apr 8, 2008 6:03:56 PM

New Yorker,
Nice try. Weren't you on the bandwagon railing about Ferraro too? It's payback time, as Dogsoldier says.

Obama and New Yorker, too arrogant to apologize?
=======================================

Posted by: WestCoastMessenger | Apr 8, 2008 6:03:15 PM

This political correctness is meaningless and absurd.

Rockefeller owes no apology. McCain does not deserve one. The Obama campaign is foolish to even engage. This entire commentary is what's known as freedom of speech and the tolerance to allow it.

Everyone needs to enroll in Rhetoric 101 to distinguish between real, imagined, fabricated and false public discourse and fact. Most of these comments are worthless.

To quote Wm. F. Buckley and JFK: Move forward.

Posted by: hypatia | Apr 8, 2008 6:01:58 PM

One SENATOR makes a comment about another SENATOR and then apologized.
END OF STORY!

Obama HAS ALWAYS made policy statements, and HAVE ALWAYS AVOIDED critical personal statement about opponents!
Moreover, Barack Obama has made that policy clear from the start.

Over the campaign cycles, American politicians have been nasty to each other.

And that momentum of personal attacks has carried over to this campaign by supporters (from ALL sides) who are having problems changing their ways to match the more dignified stance of Senator Obama's!

Posted by: New Yorker | Apr 8, 2008 5:59:49 PM

Obama is too arrogant to apologize to McCain because obama thinks he does no wrong and if one of his endorsers or supporters "misspeaks" then so be it. The words didn't come out of obama's mouth so he feels he doesn't have anything to apologize for.
This so called person is the most arrogant SOB that has diddled this country in a long time - I think that G.W. Bush is more honorable that this piece of creepy horse pucky.
A president of the US who actually condones insults to the US veterans, who have given their lives for this country.
obama wasn't even in the military - he doesn't even say the Pledge of Allegiance -
This "person" cannot become the President of the USA. He will not be elected because he is unpatriotic, hates the white population, takes advise from the Reverend Wright and is totally Un-American.
John McCain is the next President of the USA.
Obama continues to divide not only the Democratic Party, but he has divided this Nation and put us back post MLK and before the Civil Rights Movement. Nice job obama - if you become president, how far back will you put the USA? You will put this country's needs behind those of your favorite African Country.
Get out of this race obama - you are not wanted here nor needed.

Posted by: Lou | Apr 8, 2008 5:59:14 PM

LT - That's not fair to the Obama side. Why thinking on their own is so . . . so foreign to them.
