The George W. Bush Sewage Plant?
April 02, 2008 2:33 PM
NITYA VENKATARAMAN WRITES:
A grassroots team in San Francisco is sponsoring a November ballot initiative to rename the "Oceanside Wastewater Treatment Facility" the "George W. Bush Sewage Plant".
Not sure how serious to take this given the fact that members of the six-member panel include "Peaches Christ" a "Gender Illusionist" and businessman "Sister Porn Again".
Still, my most vocal knower of all things random (read: my mother) points out that there's a historical precedent for such local hijinx: During the Vietnam War, the Indian city of Calcutta (capital of West Bengal, which holds the distinction for the world's longest-running democratically-elected communist government) renamed the street where the U.S. Consulate is located Ho Chi Minh Sarani, or Ho Chi Minh Way.
Can you think of any others?

Well, let's see. After Ronald Reagan fired all the air traffic controllers, some pranksters renamed Washington's airport for him. And because he prided himself on delivering smaller and cheaper government, the same pranksters named the largest federal office building in DC (and most expensive in history) after him: the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center.
Makes me laugh every time I'm in DC.

Humorist Dave Barry once wrote a piece poking fun at East Grand Forks MN, which named a sewage treatment plant after him. Barry attended the grand opening.
The Dave Barry for President website is here: His candidacy has been unjustly neglected by the mass media, though the narrow-coverage media has given his run its due.

Jake,
This is for real. It is a prank with a point, and San Francisco has a long tradition of flipping the bird at Washington, DC.
Among us are two business owners, a showman and mayoral candidate, one of San Francisco's most popular drag queens, and dozens of community activists and politicos.
I'll be glad to explain how this came about. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go take a W.
