The McCain Hezbollah "Connection" *
April 30, 2008 8:37 PM
The campaign of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., removed a man from his Michigan Finance Committee today.
It started after conservative writer Debbie Schlussel called Michigan businessman Ali Jawad not only a supporter of Hezbollah -- a group the US State Department labels a "terrorist organization" -- but also claimed he was a "key agent of the terrorist group in the Detroit area."
After Schlussel started asking questions the McCain campaign removed him from the finance committee for a May fundraiser.
"Apparently he is a well known member of the Arab-American community in Dearborn," a McCain staffer tells ABC News. "He is also a known Republican donor and former Bush finance committee member. When these rumors surfaced he notified the campaign and we removed him from the finance committee. The guy never raised a dime for us and he isn’t even a contributor."
Yes, that's right, the McCain campaign said they removed him because of "rumors."
Jawad is president of Armada Oil & Gas Company and founder of the Lebanese American Heritage Club.
In 1997 he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor insurance fraud. Prosecutors accused him of submitting names of non-employees to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan to receive health insurance benefits and claims. He received two years of probation and he paid approximately $6,000 in fines and restitution.
In this 2002 story, Jawad is quoted saying he "rejects talk that Hezbollah is a terrorist organization that should be shunned by the United States and other governments. 'Killing innocent people -- we reject that,' he said. 'Hezbollah does not fit this category. It has protected its people.'"
Read Schlussel's story -- she lays out many charges against him.
You will note in one photograph in Schussel's story, Jawad is sitting at a table with Michael Rosen, a lawyer and policy advisor with the U.S. Office of Terrorist Financing and Financial Crimes of the U.S. Treasury Department, and Andrew Arena, Michigan FBI Special Agent in Charge, and formerly in charge of Counterterrorism for the New York FBI.
This all seems a little odd to me.
Is there anyone out there who thinks McCain supports Hezbollah? Was McCain truly offended by the notion that an Arab-American businessman with sympathy for Hezbollah supports him? Or was today's move just to deprive Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, of some future rebuttal?

* I don't mean "Connection" literally.
UPDATE: I spelled Schlussel's name incorrectly in this original post. Apologies to her; it has been corrected. Moreover, Schlussel says that there was more to the conclusion of USA v. Makki et al, than the small fine I reported. More than $252,000 was ordered to be repaid, most of which came from or Armada Oil, and one associate was sentenced to 8 months in prison and about $75,000 in fines and restitution.

Racism at it's worst. This guy was fired because he is an Arab-American. Apparently it's not OK to be racist against whites or blacks or Jews, but it is OK to be racist against Arabs (who ironically ARE white). Look what this Iraq war has done to our country...and people wonder why the Arab countries hate us.

The problem isn't this guy. The problem is that McCain clearly has early onset dementia and can't remember from day to day what he said the day before yesterday. The Bush/McCain/Clinton Axis has one goal: to protect its wealthy clients. Obama has one goal: to do the most good for the greatest number of working class and middle class America. You choose. As for me, a conservative and progressive white guy with guns and religion, it's Obama in November. Period. He's the only one willing to shift the playing field so that we have a chance at fairness.

I think the problem with this association analysis is that it assumes that a politician can account for what a pastor or a fundraiser believes to be true.
During Clinton's impeachment, Larry Flynt created a ground swell to report everybody's indiscretions: Republicans and reporters alike. How many left Congress because a past or a current kinky episode was about to unleashed publicly? Outing these people was vindictive, but it worked on the assumption that those who live in glass houses should not cast stones.
There are probably 10s or 100 of links between figures the media can either make unsavory or are unsavory and each candidate for U.S. President. At the end of the day, will we be fighting over who has the biggest boogie man in their closet? Why is the smallest common denominator slanderous character ruining smear, racial fear, or condemning queers?
Aren't we better than that as a country?

The Obama thing was based only on a comment by some guy in Hamas and McCain blew it up. By those standards this IS a connection.

Everyone likes to make so much of Obama's "scandals" -- they ALL have associations that raise one's eyebrows. Hillary particularly has SO many scandals and dirty dealings in her background that it is truly amazing that her supporters seem blind to them. All those dirty pardons, her brothers involved in backroom deals and taking cash for pardons, Whitewater, Norman Hsu, etc. Her background is absolutely ridden with unethical and even criminal acts. Oh, and close ties of her own to "terrorist" organizations.
Defend Hillary's own indiscretions before you start throwing rocks at someone else. And if you say that Bill's indiscretions, and those of her "supporters" like Norman Hsu, don't reflect upon her, then you must concede that Rev Wright's indiscretions, and Bill Ayers indiscretions, and Tony Rezko's indiscretions don't fairly belong on Barack Obama's shoulders. If you're going to burden Obama with scandals that aren't his own, then Hillary must share in the scandals of her associates and relatives as well. Her "claimed" experience is inflated and fabricated, and she has so many instances of ineptitude, failure and criminality in her own background -- no one should take her seriously as a presidential candidate.

Spock,
Let me educate you, if Senator Obama had ties to any terrorist organization he would not be a Senator? Do you honestly believe that our government hasn’t conducted thorough back ground investigations before granting them access to sensitive if not classified information.

What's with the hysterical anti-Obama posts? Get a grip. Get some facts. Get used to this phrase:
President Barack Obama
You will hear it for the next 8 years.

Quoting from A Clue to Hillary "As long as military might is regarded "right", Our national image suffers shame. And currently there's no end in sight, While dissenters are assigned the blame." This clue also applies to John McCain, with his determined desire to "stay the course" - the Bush policy.

Umm lets see was this guy ever convicted of or admitted to terrorist acts? NO
This is just a distraction from Obama's direct ties to terrorists and Hate mongers!!

As long as America depends on two things to live a better live! like GAS and fighting terrorism , we will always need the Arabs, whether is senator McCAIN or senator OBAMA or senetor H. CLINTON OR their best freinds in town both PRESIDENT BUSH AND VICE PRESIDENT CHENEY.They kiss chins every time they meet and exchange SWORD.
Now leave senator McCAIN ALONE, HE IS TOO OLD FOR THIS KIND OF POLITICS. THANK YOU.

Debbie Schussel is not a "conservative writer". She is an hysterical anti-Arab bigot and huge neo-con. She makes David Horowitz look sane, and that's saying a lot.
McCain's guy sounds like a typical Republican thief, but for people like Schussel, his sin wasn't stealing money in the past, his sin is breathing while being Arab. Guess McSame doesn't want any Arab taint in his campaign.

I do not know where the US elites are heading when they describe Hezbollah or Hamas as terrorists which turns to be orders to kill the the majority of the Palestinian people and the majority of the shiite community in Lebanon.A new discrimination is being founded ,a shiite is accused if he thanked God for his health
Posted by: salim mosa | May 1, 2008 5:51:16 AM
you mean McSame is in the bed with his Islamic terrorist associates and releases stories regarding Hamas endorsing Obama. Talking about hello pot this is kettle. In other words if he would not have gotten exposed he would not have released the him from his finance committe.

McCain's side merely took a card off the table that could have been picked up and used against him later on.
It's akin to poker playing where one deprives another of "good" card, although I do hope some of these candidates, or people they surround them with, can think more like chess where the best chess players are the ones who can think fifteen moves ahead of their opponets.

Certainly hope that Hillary Clinton is our next President then McCain is
second best.
Senator Obama is the most corrupt politician ever to run for a high office in the last 100 years. He is a fraud with radical views. He would never been elected in the first place except for the support of bad people. His character is in the sewer.

Jake,
I know you did not mean "connection." LOL
The photo op is odd, I agree. There could be an explanation and it would be reasonable. I don't intend to post it. Think, Jake. You can figure it out. I know you can.

In the landmark civil fraud case against Bill Clinton in Los Angeles, where the former President is charged with defrauding a Hollywood dot com millionaire to help Hillary Clinton obtain more than $1.2 million from him for her 2000 Senate campaign, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Aurelio Munoz ruled on Friday, April 25 that Hillary Clinton would not be required to testify in a sworn deposition as a material witness in the case until AFTER the November election!
Equally surprising as the ruling was the judge’s request to Hillary defense lawyer David Kendall to “say hello to his ( Judge Munoz”) friend Bill, also a partner in Kendall’s law firm”
Same Old, Same old

Belle Star -
How long have you worked for the Republican party? I've read your posts, and they're all over the map, but the one common thread is Pro-Republican spinning.
This thread has NOTHING to do with any supposed misdeeds of Obama. It was John McCain's campaign that's jumped all over the Democrats for Carters behavior, and attacked Obama for a supposed terrorist endorsement.
You see, Johnny One Note ("The terrorists are coming, the terrorists are coming!") in deciding to "McCarthy" people with guilt-by-association politics, he opened the door to being accused himself of any unsightly connections. Now, thanks to him, everyone and their uncle in this campaign season will be scrutinized for any possible excuse to "force" the campaigns to fire them or repudiate them.
It's just foolish. Bet he's wondering if this was poor judgement on his part to open that door. Wouldn't be the first bad judgement on his part.

After purer-than-thou candidate Obama jumped all over Jimmy Carter for talking with Hamas (who endorsed Obama), what else could McCain really do? It's the same as Obama dumping his precious preacher when the media hopped on THAT. They're both disgusting.

It is very hard to predict who will win this fall. What is the connection between Mr. Obama and Blackwell money laundering scheme? Is this just some baseless smear?
Also, AP reports that Mr. Obama voted three times for gas tax holiday as an Illinois Senator. Now, he is criticizing his opponents for favoring such a tax holiday.

I'm absolutely positive that you and all your MSM buddies will abide by your rubric, and brand it w/ the IOKIYAR imprimatur.
McCain gets yet another pass.
And you call yourself a journalist - the First Amendment weeps.
