The Sword Falls on Penn: The Uribe Factor

April 06, 2008 8:53 PM

On Monday, Penn met with representatives of the government of Colombia to discuss how to get the U.S.-Colombian rade deal passed.

On Wednesday, Colomian President Alvaro Uribe issued a statement condemning Obama for his opposition to the trade deal: "I deplore the fact that Senator Obama, aspiring to be president of the United States, should be unaware of Colombia's efforts. I think it is for political calculations that he is making a statement that does not correspond to Colombia's reality."

Clinton had already stated her opposition to the trade deal, but Uribe did not mention her.

Wondered labor union leaders: what does Uribe know that we don't?

According to Marc Ambinder (The Atlantic) Penn is very much involved - in on staff calls with the press, etc.

That Clinton, everything's done with a wink and a nudge. It would be nice if all was done with a honesty and integrity, instead. Penn shouldn't have been around sweeping floors much less interacting with the press.

Demoted Hillary Clinton strategist Mark Penn may no longer have the coveted title of chief strategist, but he remains a key member of the campaign's senior staff.

Mr. Penn took part on the campaign's morning message call this morning, as usual.

This afternoon, he is also scheduled to be on a call with Clinton and other aides to begin to prepare for Saturday's presidential debate in Philadelphia.

Mr. Penn "is still going to be very much involved," a senior campaign official said.

Indeed, it is not clear precisely what Mr. Penn's title-change entails, other than a public rebuke, although the official said that "there is a difference between being in charge and being one of many voices.

So, Clinton, who says she'll restore our relations with other countries, fires one of her advisors for working with one of our allies????????

Does no one see the irony?

Boom, boom, boom another one bites the dust. I guess that's what u call getting rid of dead weight.

I would be complaining to FCC about media bias around the election and require for an audit.

Jack - You need to stop taking sides.

Hillary took anything but "decisive action" on Penn... She has taken decisive action on...well, nothing.

So please don't play her weakness as what is not. Mark Penn has been with this campaign for a long time with problems in this campaign and it has been like picking at a band-aid for fear of what it would feel like to rip it off.

This is not a person who should be leading our coutnry....

Hillary is not an executive manager!
Hillary is green behind the ears but not in her husbands wallet and greased palms!
and the problem is once again Hillary doesn't admit that she is a bonehead!

A memo from the Clinton campaign

"After the events of the last few days, Mark Penn has asked to give up his role as Chief Strategist of the Clinton Campaign; Mark, and Penn, Schoen and Berland Associates, Inc. will continue to provide polling and advice to the campaign," Clinton Campaign Manager Maggie Williams said in a statement"

So he "resigns"???

Yet he will remain an advisor???

wow

Hillary will have another bad week...

Its one lie after the other

I remember when the Obama NAFTA Canadian story was released she told reporters if you were to replace Obama name with hers the story would implode

Well now... It's you Hillary

It's you and your CHIEF STRATEGIST

then to lie about an ill women and her baby

How low can you stoop???

I don't really understand this article. What is a rade?

Posted by: Brian | Apr 7, 2008 3:32:43 AM

Never mind...it's everyone else that is spelling Colombia wrong, and since I read all of their stuff first, I was confused.

Posted by: Jade | Apr 7, 2008 3:27:32 AM

What does Uribe know that we don't? That Obama's going to be the Democratic nominee, not Clinton.

First it was announced the government of Colombia fired Penn. Then it was announded the Clinton campaign fired Penn. I would guess Penn told Uribe that Clinton's campaign was going to fold soon anyway, so it really didn't matter what her position was or wasn't. Penn may well be back on Colombia's payroll soon.

Working class must read about Hillary Clinton paying Mark Penn's consulting firm 10.8 million dollars. But how come she will not pay the small businesses she used for her campaign venues or will pay them late?

Mark Penn WAS the SENIOR STRATEGIST FOR THE HILLARY PRESIDENTIAL BID. Does anyone know why he has stepped down today? He was caught negotiating with Columbia to promote a free trade agreement. Does anyone know what that means? THAT MEANS LESS JOBS FOR AMERICANS AND MORE JOBS OVERSEAS.

Now why did he step down today? Because he was CAUGHT, that's why. While Hillary Clinton says she opposes free trade agreements let us BE REAL PEOPLE. She is going to promise everyone the moon and then she will NOT COME THROUGH like she has done in New York.

It seems very odd that her chief strategist had such a complete conflict of interest BECAUSE HILLARY IS REALLY FOR THE RICH AND WILL NOT CHANGE NAFTA AS SIGNED INTO LAW BY HER HUSBAND. AND BILL HAS A COMPLETE CONFLICT OF INTEREST BECAUSE OF ALL THE MONEY HE HAS ACCEPTED FROM FOREIGN GOVERNMENTS INCLUDING DUBAI AND COMMUNIST CHINA.

WAKE UP CLINTON SUPPORTERS AND REALIZE THAT SHE WILL NOT COME THROUGH AND SHE AND HER HUSBAND ARE RICH ELITISTS WHO JUST WANT TO GET BACK INTO THE WHITE HOUSE. HAVEN'T HER TAX RETURNS AND THE 109 MILLION THEY HAVE MADE SINCE HE LEFT OFFICE PROVE THIS?

PLEASE WAKE UP AND NOTICE THAT THEY ARE GREEDY SELF-SERVING POLITICIANS OUT FOR THEIR OWN WEALTH AND SELF-AGGRANDIZMENT. LOOK UP BOSS TWEED IN EARLY NYC AND READ UP ON HIM. THEN COMPARE HIM TO THE CLINTONS

Mark Penn ran for president of his Miami condo and lost that election also

Doherty,
I agree that Jake Trapper is doing a good job on exposing Penn. Hillary did a great job on taking immediate action to clear Penn out since he was acting contrary to her interests. The labor leaders will be happy about this outcome.

Don't forget that Obama placed Wright on Obama's campaign for a year after Obama knew the guy was defective before HE took action.

Thanks, Jake.

You're doing an excellent job. Looks like it is having some impact, too. We really need tough reporters like you, willing to do the homework and hold folks accountable. I look forward to what you'll be doing in the coming weeks and months.

Much appreciated!

Uribe attacked Obama because Hillary's Chief strategist was trying to lobby for Columbia when Obama would have NONE of that.

Obama criticized the Columbian government for their anti-union practices and horrible working conditions.

Posted by: Maritza | Apr 7, 2008 12:49:20 AM

The next thing you know Hillary or someone on her campaign will start accusing Obama of meeting with Uribe to promote trade agreements.

She will accuse Obama of doing what she just got caught doing. Like she did on NAFTA when the Canadians came out and said Obama's representative did NOT say anything different than Obama did in the debates. But the Canadian government DID say Hillary's representative contacted them and indicated "don't worry about NAFTA".

I've had enough. You can't trust this woman for one minute. I sure don't think Penn contacted the Columbians without being directed to do so. Ask yourself this, if the Columbians didn't believe they were getting the whole "Clinton package" why would they be so upset and discontinue business dealings with Penn's firm? Of course the Columbians thought Penn was delivering the whole Clinton package.

countallthevotes,

you must be completely desperate, insane or evil. If you have seen and heard that guy, as I did man weeks ago, there can be no doubt even in crooks like you that his 'story' is the greatest bullsh*t that ever appeared on the Internet. But the likes of you can USE it, for you desperately want to hurt Obama's great reputation. You are a piece of low life, I feel compassion for your parents.

The Sword fall on Mark Penn: Who cares???

As someone said over on Daily Kos earlier today:
"Tapper is often unfair and perhaps even petty... But he is an excellent journalist"

The "resignation" of Mark Penn was timed to prevent questions such as yours from making it into the news on Monday morning.

Clinton had already stated her opposition to the trade deal, but Uribe did not mention her.

Wondered labor union leaders: what does Uribe know that we don't?

Does anyone wonder why Uribe did not mention Hillay maybe Mark told him that once Hill is President, then she could help..I mean you know NAFTA she wasnt for it ..but of course not Publicly..
Now of course you hear her Publicly
The Queen of flip flop always changes the story.

John look at the title, there is no Obama there. The Colombain President is saying that Obama is opposed to the trade agreement but the news were saying that it is Hillary the Bosnian Commander in Chief who said she was opposed to that TRADE AGREEMENT. We are lost, where is the truth, WHAT SIGNAL IS BEING SENT BY PRESIDENT Urube of Colombia? GOD BLESS AMERICA AND GOD BLESS OBAMA.OBAMA08.

LeeLee07, enjoy your foxnews-unfair and unbalanced, do not forget that Foxnews is the right-wing conspiracy (ref; Hilary Clinton). Now Hill the Bosnian General has new friends including John McCain, Greta, Hannety, Bill Orally etc. God bless America and God bless Obama. OBAMA08.

Jake, well spotted again. This absolutely raises more questions about Penn's Colombia contacts. It certainly looks like he made the campaign an issue as well in his meeting with the Colombia government representatives. Why would he do so? At who's suggestion or request?

Fascinating questions, although they don't make you feel better about politics in general, and Clinton style politics in particular.
