The Weather Underground - Ayres and Dohrn, Rosenberg and Evans

April 17, 2008 8:12 PM

Lotta talk, stemming from last night's debate, about the Weather Underground. Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, is friendly with a former member. Sen. Hillary Clinton's husband commuted the jail sentences of two former members.

Does it matter? Is it a stupid and tangential issue?

And who were they?

It starts with the Days or Rage.

"In October 1969 hundreds of young people, clad in football helmets and wielding lead pipes, marched through an upscale Chicago shopping district, pummeling parked cars and smashing shop windows in their path," says the promo for a recent documentary about the group. "This was the first demonstration of the Weather Underground's "Days of Rage." Outraged by the Vietnam War and racism in America, the organization waged a low-level war against the U.S. government through much of the 1970s, bombing the Capitol building, breaking Timothy Leary out of prison, and evading one of the largest FBI manhunts in history."

It appears that the documentary has been put on Youtube, where in piecemeal fashion you can watch Part 1, Part 2Part 3, Part 4Part 5,  Part 6,  Part 7, Part 8and Part 9.

**

What's the Clinton connection?

One former member of the Weather Underground, Linda Sue Evans, was in 1985 sentenced to five years in prison carrying a gun and for harboring a fugitive -- Marilyn Buck, who drove the getaway car during the Black Liberation Army's notorious Brink's armored car robbery in Nanuet, NY, where a Brink's guard and two police officers were killed. Evans was then tried for previous crimes. She got five years for conspiring to bomb the U.S. Capitol in 1983, since she had helped forge IDs for others involving in the bombing. She also was sentenced to 30 years on gun charges -- for using false identification to buy three rifles, a pistol, and ammo.

Evans served 16 years, but in January 2001 her sentence was commuted by then-President Bill Clinton.

Another former member, Susan Rosenberg was in 1984 caught in possession of 740 pounds of dynamite intended for use in terrorist attacks. She was sentenced to 58 years in prison. Rosenberg was also allegedly involved in the Brink's robbery.

In 2001, then-President Bill Clinton commuted her sentence, freeing her, in an action widely covered at the time as a pardon.

Asked today if Sen. Clinton thought it was wrong for her husband to free Evans and Rosenberg, a Clinton campaign spokesman refused to answer the question.

"The difference here is that Bill Ayers hosted an event for Senator Obama at his home when he was running for state senator," Clinton campaign spokesman Phil Singer said. "I can tell you that neither Linda Evans or Susan Rosenberg hosted an event for her, and I think that's why the question becomes relevant."

Singer added that, "Bill Ayers is unrepentant of what he did…and that is a difference, of course, between Linda Evans and Susan Rosenberg."

But when Evans was released after Bill Clinton pardoned her, she told the Austin American-Statesman, "I'm not repentant. That's for sure. I wouldn't go about it the same (violent) way." But "we still need solutions, and we still need justice just as badly as we ever did."

**

Ayres, whose relationship with Obama we've discussed before, is a Distinguished Professor of Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and founder of both the Small Schools Workshop and the Center for Youth and Society, which is how Sen. Barack Obama knows him.

But before he and his wife Bernardine Dohrn -- also a former member of the Weather Underground -- became what the Obama campaign refers to as (quoting Alexander Cockburn) as "respectable fixtures in mainstream liberal Chicago years ago" -- they were leaders of the militant group.

They went underground after a 1970 town house explosion in Manhattan killed three of the group's own members, after which they were indicted for crossing state lines to incite a riot -- the Days of Rage -- as well as for ''conspiracy to bomb police stations and government buildings," including the Capitol, the Pentagon, and New York City Police Headquarters. Those charges were dropped because of illegal surveillance and other examples of prosecutorial misconduct.

While Ayers and Dohrn were hiding from law enforcement, the Weather Underground participated in the bombings of the US Capital, the Pentagon and a State Department building. In 1981 Ayers and Dohrn turned themselves in to federal authorities, but all charges were dropped as a result of alleged "government legal misconduct."

In 1980, Ayres and Dohrn surrendered and pleaded guilty to possession of explosives. Ayres didn't serve any time; Dohrn did seven months in prison for refusing to cooperate with a grand jury investigation into the Brinks robbery. They married during a prison furlough.

**

So Obama asked the question last night -- which is worse, using this "guilt by association" technique, his being on a board with Ayres and having been to his house for.a key political meeting? Or Bill Clinton commuting Evans' and Rosenberg's sentences? Or is it all equally disturbing? Or equally irrelevant?

Power to the people.

- jpt

UPDATE: This post has been corrected to reflect the fact that Rosenberg was not pardoned, her sentence was commuted, despite how the media covered it at the time.

with all the phD's unemployed why this guy at UIC? is this a great message to send to this particular group of students? are they somehow expected to decide that violence = fame = career?

personally i dont care who senators hang out with, i assume it is the bottomfeeders, but who lets these types teach the youth? he'd be asking paper or plastic if it were up to me.

i just cant condone the type of thinking that blows monuments to dead policemen up. sure he can change and lead a productive life, however, if he'd never of done violence would he still have been hired? i doubt it.

arent 911 the first numbers you dial when there is any sort of trouble, from a crash to a broken bedroom window in the middle of the night? i do.

From the June 2008 issue of CRC Capital Research Center I read In "95" Ayers along with his wife Bernardine Dohrn held a fundraising event for state senate candidate Obama in their Hyde Park home. Then again in 2001 Ayers donated $200 to Obama's state senate reelection campaign. In a 2001 memoir, Fugitive Days, and in subsequent press interviews, William Ayers said he had no regrets about bombing New York City police headquarters, the Capitol, and the penagon in the 1970s. "I don't regret setting bombs," Ayers said of his terrorism in a New York Times interview that happened to be published Sept. 11,2001. "I feel we didn't do enough." When asked if he would do it all again he said, "I don't want to discount the possibility."

In Mike Evans book "The Final Move Beyond Iraq" page 1 of the introduction former Mayor Rudy Giuliani was asked why he rejected $10 million donation for disaster relief from Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal. He noted that when the prince had commented that the United States "should reexamine its policies in the Middle East and adopt a more balanced stand toward the Palestinian cause," thus suggesting the U.S. policies in the Middle East contributed to the Sept.11 attacks, Giuliani felt it would be morally irresponsible to accept the money.
"My thoughts"
Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani acted honorably in his decision.
Barack Obama showed no integrity and I have no respect for his decision to accept any donations from Ayers, I'm astonished Ayers and his wife arn't doing life. Barack Obama is an intelligent man and I don't believe for a minute that he wasn't aware of Ayers past bombings of the Pentagon, the Capitol and the New York city police headquarters.

Bill Ayer's was my child's beloved pre-school teacher in the early 1980's while he was working on his Ed.D at Columbia University. Far from being the "rich" kid, he went to BJ's Kids to offer to teach so that his child, Zayd could go to school. He, Bernadette and Zayd were living in a low-rent apartment and she was working in a children's clothing store. Like my husband, who was also working on his Ed.D at Columbia at the time, we were all just trying to get through the tough education process and take care of our children. We all knew about Bill and Bernadette's past association with The Weathermen. It was openly talked about and at that time, as opposed to now, we understood that young radicals, as they grew into adulthood and parenthood, were capable of change and living responsible lives of service to community. This was Bill in a nutshell. He was the most generous and loving teacher we could have possibly hoped for our precious child. So respected was he that he rose to become the Director of Education of the Day Care Center and an influential child advocate in New York City.

My buck stops with the Weather Underground. Everything else can be rationalized or equivocated...smoothed or readdressed.

But hanging out personally or professionally with former domestic terrorists whose actions have literally killed and terrorized people is completely unacceptable. Ayers hasn't renounced his previous behavior, he's said that he didn't do enough. And this is DEBATABLE?

Meanwhile Obama will lick his finger and stick it to the wind and wait to see what the real fallout is. And if it's major, he'll denounce Ayers like he did Wright and the koolaid drinkers will all nod like bobbleheaded dolls and say 'see, it's alright now..nothing to worry about'.

Bullfeathers. Elections are always filled with massive quantities of bovine excrement but this particular load of crap is a serious concern. This is not the sort of 'advisor', 'friend' or 'supporter' that I can get behind.

This is a huge problem and it's not going to go away.

Amy,

=When Hillary went on the attack for Obama's association with Ayers, Obama countered with the fact that her husband pardoned a couple of people from the same organization.=

So the logic here is that its not OK to pardon radical terrorists, but it is OK to be friends with one??

Do I have that right?

Hey "Reaganfan,"

During the Pennsylvania debate When Hillary went on the attack for Obama's association with Ayers, Obama countered with the fact that her husband pardoned a couple of people from the same organization. ABC news just simply ignored his counterattack. Typical for that evening, I think.

Alot of people have WW11 ties with family members who served. Hitler's dispectable acts & attitude have not yet faded away in history. I doubt that a person with so many anti-American assocciations, could not have similar feelings to this day. I have my doubts that Obama represents the Democratic Party values. He doesn't have the same walk as Democratics. His Quack also falls short. It seems prudent to vote for Hillary. If Obama runs in the fall, most democrates will most likely support McCain, and suffer in more failed Bush policies, than to knowingly vote for a person that we know so little about & most of it not good. Not good enough to be the Leader of the United States of America. Hillary would make a far better President, we know where she stands, no bad side effects.

More Hypocracy from the Clintons!
So Bill Clinton pardoned two memebers
of the Weather Underground before he left office!
Isn't that the group that Ayers belonged
to? Why didn't Stephanopoulus
bring this up in the debate?
He must have known about it since he
was part of the Clinton Administration!
This is not only proof that the Clintons
are hypocrites it proves that George
was "in the tank" for Hillary during the
debate and he should be Fired!

I want to thank ABC for the debate even though some commentators and Mr. Obama have complained. He looked quite sheepish and awkward trying to dismiss pertinent questions.
We have had 20 odd debates and the policy issues have been hammered to death already. In any event, this primary election was never based on policy issues. It seemed based on personality, likability, judgment and "trust and honesty". So the questions that were posed to both were extremely important.
It boggles my mind how Mr. Obama can dismiss every problematic connection as "guilt-by-association". All the connections were prolonged, deliberate, chosen, and in some cases, intense. And several of connections are also reflective of Mr. Obama's radical (not inspiring) nature. By flip-flopping and misleading on his connections, he has certainly unveiled, at least partially, his lower self.
This is the heart and soul of the election. But at this late stage only few will see what this man is all about. He and his surrogates seem to display a sense of entitlement to the Presidency (did he not accuse his opponent of the same? I guess he took this personal). Only "racists" will not vote for him, they claim.
Perhaps, he can gloat with his nomination. Even a possible win in the general election may await him. But he will be more a divider than a "uniter". Time will tell.

Ak - The debate was viewed by almost the entire country, from high school students, to my 95 year old mother as the worst debate in televised history. It was a travesty.

Most of it will be quickly forgotten - except for the fact that is brought back "guilt by association" and "red-baiting, the highlights of the McCarthy witch hunts. It's not only going to hurt Obama - who will whether the storm - it's going to hurt every American who works to find solutions to divisive issues, from inner city crime, to education, to peace in the Middle East.

Great debate ABC!! Of coarse, the only one's that didn't like it were the Obama supporters, that's expected. I was really getting bored with the one sided debates. Finally, a debate that moveon.org didn't own!

ABC...You've got a new fan!

If America is going to start guilt by association, I'd like to know where it begins and ends. Freeman Dyson, a brilliant physicist, who helped save Britain from Nazi air attacks and did genius-level work in quantum physics, has been accused by the American Enterprise Institute of being a communist. He sits on the Board of Sponsors of the American Bulletin of Atomic Scientists. Should the entire board quit? Are we going to implicate them? He's been invited to Davos. Should every influential leader on the planet, including Bill Clinton and Bill Gates, refuse to attend Davos because someone said Dyson was a communist? Charles Muscatine, is the father of one of Hillary Clinton's closest aides - Lissa Muscatine, who was her speechwriter, and helped work on her autobiography. Charles Muscatine was fired from Berkeley because he refused to sign that atrocious witch-hunting McCarthy loyalty oath. He sued and won his position back. Should Muscatine be fired from the campaign because her father was accused of being a communist?

HIllary could have answered the debate question in an honest, and honorable way - she could have said "this type of character assasination ends here." refused to re-ignite this sort of witch hunt and called it for what it was. But she did not. She tried to make political points off of it. Which shows again, the Clintons have absolutely no conscience.

Bill Ayers is not running for President. Obama is. If the press wants to start another McCarthy era - guilt by association - if they are that lacking in any moral compass, or any true patriotism, they better get ready. Because it's going to start hitting very, very close to home.

There are endless arguments that these attacks are fair game because the far right will bring them up. The far right will bring up anything. Witness the hapless attempt to link Woods with terrorists. A branch of far right kept a list called "Jews in the Clinton Administration." Is that the next question? Obama? Would you hire a jew?

Posted by: mara | Apr 18, 2008 3:46:07 PM

I think that what really upsets people about the Ayers/Obama connection is that immediately following the 911 attacks against America, Ayers was quoted as saying "I wish WE'D done more" - Rightly or wrongly, people have tied the attacks on 911 and this guy's anti-american sentiment together.

As a politician, Obama would have been expected to know about these statements. It's another issue reflecting lack of judgement.

Will his supporters care, will most Democrats be turned off? - not likely. But if Democrats care about winning in November, we should care.

I am tired of hearing how Obama's private life has nothing to do with the issues. If association with radicals in multi-form has no merit; then let me associate for the less aware. Social Security--I am about to collect and it isn't enough to live in the gheto on and I have paid into it all my working life---so much for socialized retirement. Socialized Education and the teachers pension fund is what Rezko is playing corruption with and helping Obama jump start his political career--so much for my desire to want socialized medicine----I can't afford it thank you very much. The gangsters and politicians are living too high on helping the poor and needy.

1. Whoever is trying to associate the Woods Fund with Arab extremists is delusional. I have the 990s from the Woods Fund. They give to Chicago community action and arts groups. They do not support global terrorism, and whoever runs this site should be ashamed for accepting such ridiculous claims. They are completely apolitical - on a national or international level. I am mystified why the network censors any link to an outside source, but allows outright lies to propagate.

2. I don't like Ayers, and I detest his wife, but Bill Daley, interviewed by another news source, said today Daley said Ayers "worked with me in shaping our now nationally renowned school reform program." "I don't condone what he did 40 years ago, but I remember that period well," the mayor said. "It was a difficult time, but those days are long over. I believe we have too many challenges in Chicago and our country to keep re-fighting 40-year-old battles." As a point of reference, Daley also defends his father, so I don't think you could label him a wild-eyed radical.

3. Ayers is rich. His dad was CEO of Con Ed and he went to an exclusive prepe school. Rich people are on foundation boards because they are rich and know other rich people. It's not complicated.

Posted by: mara | Apr 18, 2008 2:09:04 PM

Thanks Jake. Keep digging. It's outrageous for Hillary to keep slamming Obama for a tangential relationship with Ayres 40 years after his crimes, which happened, by the way, when Obama was EIGHT YEARS OLD.

There's a big difference between that and Bill Clinton freeing two convicted terrorists, one of whom was caught with 740 POUNDS of dynamite. For Hillary to keep harping on this issue is chutzpah of the highest order.

I think you're wrong about Ayers and Dohrn pleading guilty to possession of explosives, Jake. According to my research the government botched their case against the two. Dohrn plead out to battery and bail-jumping, got probation, and later served jail time for contempt of court. Ayers didn't plead to anything - his case was thrown out. Since suppressed evidence can be used against people outside of a criminal case, I don't think the government could have had much of a case against the two on any of the big charges or Dohrn would not have been admitted to the bar and neither would have been able to be hired as professors. Ayers is a professor at the University of Chicago, which is a government job.

If you want to play this game, what about our mayor out here in Oakland, California,Ron Dellums, who has endorsed Hillary Clinton? He's a former Black Panther -- before he became a Congrossman, that is, and got the local Federal courthouse named after him with the help of none other than Bill Clinton.

ABC, I am eternally grateful. I have seen how MSM has failed to run certain articles, or have buried them far from the front pages, or have only reported a fraction of a story or a piece of a quote, etc. if it was in any way, shape or form showing Obama in a less than favorable light. Most people don't know the half of the negative TRUE things about Obama because MSM refuses to publish them. KUDOS to ABC for trying to open our eyes!

This is not a black American over white American punishment. This is not a what is the lesser of two evils morality blunder. What needs to be seen from all candidates, future politicians, former, and present is that the past cannot be rewritten. What is done is done. Acknowledgement and acceptence through thought and decision made to redeem or protect former decisions is what should be seen. Truth of the past is written in stone, because we cannot do anything about it the American people can realize that we are not the red white and blue crusaders of truth, and we make many mistakes. As people lets put hubris aside and tell the truth and explain then move on. Enlightenment is key.
