The Weather Underground - Ayres and Dohrn, Rosenberg and Evans
April 17, 2008 8:12 PM
Lotta talk, stemming from last night's debate, about the Weather Underground. Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, is friendly with a former member. Sen. Hillary Clinton's husband commuted the jail sentences of two former members.
Does it matter? Is it a stupid and tangential issue?
And who were they?
It starts with the Days or Rage.
"In October 1969 hundreds of young people, clad in football helmets and wielding lead pipes, marched through an upscale Chicago shopping district, pummeling parked cars and smashing shop windows in their path," says the promo for a recent documentary about the group. "This was the first demonstration of the Weather Underground's "Days of Rage." Outraged by the Vietnam War and racism in America, the organization waged a low-level war against the U.S. government through much of the 1970s, bombing the Capitol building, breaking Timothy Leary out of prison, and evading one of the largest FBI manhunts in history."
It appears that the documentary has been put on Youtube, where in piecemeal fashion you can watch Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7, Part 8, and Part 9.
**
What's the Clinton connection?
One former member of the Weather Underground, Linda Sue Evans, was in 1985 sentenced to five years in prison carrying a gun and for harboring a fugitive -- Marilyn Buck, who drove the getaway car during the Black Liberation Army's notorious Brink's armored car robbery in Nanuet, NY, where a Brink's guard and two police officers were killed. Evans was then tried for previous crimes. She got five years for conspiring to bomb the U.S. Capitol in 1983, since she had helped forge IDs for others involving in the bombing. She also was sentenced to 30 years on gun charges -- for using false identification to buy three rifles, a pistol, and ammo.
Evans served 16 years, but in January 2001 her sentence was commuted by then-President Bill Clinton.
Another former member, Susan Rosenberg was in 1984 caught in possession of 740 pounds of dynamite intended for use in terrorist attacks. She was sentenced to 58 years in prison. Rosenberg was also allegedly involved in the Brink's robbery.
In 2001, then-President Bill Clinton commuted her sentence, freeing her, in an action widely covered at the time as a pardon.
Asked today if Sen. Clinton thought it was wrong for her husband to free Evans and Rosenberg, a Clinton campaign spokesman refused to answer the question.
"The difference here is that Bill Ayers hosted an event for Senator Obama at his home when he was running for state senator," Clinton campaign spokesman Phil Singer said. "I can tell you that neither Linda Evans or Susan Rosenberg hosted an event for her, and I think that's why the question becomes relevant."
Singer added that, "Bill Ayers is unrepentant of what he did…and that is a difference, of course, between Linda Evans and Susan Rosenberg."
But when Evans was released after Bill Clinton pardoned her, she told the Austin American-Statesman, "I'm not repentant. That's for sure. I wouldn't go about it the same (violent) way." But "we still need solutions, and we still need justice just as badly as we ever did."
**
Ayres, whose relationship with Obama we've discussed before, is a Distinguished Professor of Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and founder of both the Small Schools Workshop and the Center for Youth and Society, which is how Sen. Barack Obama knows him.
But before he and his wife Bernardine Dohrn -- also a former member of the Weather Underground -- became what the Obama campaign refers to as (quoting Alexander Cockburn) as "respectable fixtures in mainstream liberal Chicago years ago" -- they were leaders of the militant group.
They went underground after a 1970 town house explosion in Manhattan killed three of the group's own members, after which they were indicted for crossing state lines to incite a riot -- the Days of Rage -- as well as for ''conspiracy to bomb police stations and government buildings," including the Capitol, the Pentagon, and New York City Police Headquarters. Those charges were dropped because of illegal surveillance and other examples of prosecutorial misconduct.
While Ayers and Dohrn were hiding from law enforcement, the Weather Underground participated in the bombings of the US Capital, the Pentagon and a State Department building. In 1981 Ayers and Dohrn turned themselves in to federal authorities, but all charges were dropped as a result of alleged "government legal misconduct."
In 1980, Ayres and Dohrn surrendered and pleaded guilty to possession of explosives. Ayres didn't serve any time; Dohrn did seven months in prison for refusing to cooperate with a grand jury investigation into the Brinks robbery. They married during a prison furlough.

So Obama asked the question last night -- which is worse, using this "guilt by association" technique, his being on a board with Ayres and having been to his house for.a key political meeting? Or Bill Clinton commuting Evans' and Rosenberg's sentences? Or is it all equally disturbing? Or equally irrelevant?
Power to the people.

UPDATE: This post has been corrected to reflect the fact that Rosenberg was not pardoned, her sentence was commuted, despite how the media covered it at the time.

Bottom line, Dems, Obama has a lot of connections to shady people. The "I know you are but what am I" defense of digging up some pardons from Bill's term doesn't cut the mustard. It's clear these people, while no pollyannas, were not at the same level as William Ayers. And as Clinton rightly pointed out, Ayers did hold fundraisers and raise money for BO. That's the part that stings and it's impossible to refute. If you democrats don't think the republicans will plaster this, along with Rev Wright's greatest hits on every 527 ad from here until November...I've got some Ocean Front property in Arizona I'd like to sell ya! Think about it. Be rational.

The Republicans want to combat Hillary Clinton, so 'brat boy' Hannity gave George the script for the attack on Obama. It's so obvious that no real issues were discussed on this debate. How many millions of dollars was wasted on this farce for bizarre news?
Why has no one reviewed a full version of a Rev Wright's sermon and made a critique of it? Who edited together this montage of clips so it appears that this was one complete sermon given by Rev Wright? Who presented this scandal piece? Why does white America treats all Americans like they were sheep and they know what we should be told to believe? GWB administration raised the terrorist threat levels to manipulate the fears a few years ago. Why is that not criminal?
Is white America afraid that The Million Man March was some radical move to undermine national security? Why are white men afraid to tell the truth when they are wrong?
Why are black men and women interrogated/profiled to the extreme just to perform in the same capacity of lesser performing white men and women?
When will America return to acting like responsible adults with a moral and ethical conscience? America needs to get rid of the spoiled brats that are running this country? There is a bull in the china shop and no one is acting as a responsible adult in handling the matter. We are paralyzed to allow this acting up in whatever manner. Where are the checks and balances for this Administration and its control of the media?

Obama truly has his work cut out for him. Hilary, George S. & Charlie G. poured it on as thick as they could. I'm surporised, although I shouldn't be that they "still don't get it". The world is changing and there-by-association the usual games of "polotics" is struglling to keep up the status-quo. People are in fact living with living or no hope for their present and future employement oppotunites, lots or frustration and worry over keeping their homes, and the ever-soaring price of gas, just to name a few. But you folks expressly took cheap shots at Obama during what you termed a "debate". SHAME, SHAME SHAMe!!! But hold up a moment......perhaps in the long run you've done Barack a tremendous favor. The more people see the lies continue to pour out of Hilary's mouth, the more attractive Obama becomes as someone of character. So I guess, on the one hand I should say THANK YOU Hilary. And Charlie Gibson and George S. please explain why you never raised the issue of NAFTA which is still a major concern to many Americans and why Mark Penn is still a "vigarous member of Hilary's campaign? The public or the portion of those who want change and some truth from our elected officials might wnat to protest the "so-called-debate" and not watch Charlie Gibson's evening new show or George S. Sunday morning talk show. I sure don't plan to watch either.

Here's my theory - CHARACTER does not matter to the Obama/Clinton kool-aid drinkers. But then again, why should we be surprised after Bill's fiasco in the Oval Office?????? This is the first time these two have been asked serious questions regarding their lying (Hillary) and the company they keep (Obama)!! Great job to both commentators!! And to those of you who don't think it matters who Obama associates with, for national security clearances, these ARE the issues that are carefully considered!!

You people who are backing this debate that just happened...
oh yeah I want the candidate that backs this debate when choosing a President... forget food prices, gas, protectionist cowboy diplomacy (and the situation it has put us in), the environment, taxes, divisive politics that destroy any chance of a healthcare bill being passed...
lets talk about scandal
lets rehash through several news cycles friends of friends
...but only scandals and "friends" that don't have to do with the long history or the Clintons and the tsunami of scandals that will be coming if Clinton was suddenly against an opponent that didn't put the party and the above mentioned issues ahead of their own win.
Lets talk about issues that have never been raised or "vetted" during this campaign... you know all those "vetted" issues with the Clintons...you remmeber the ones that are never addressed in any debate or public forum... because if Clinton were to get the nomination those issues that you all have now said those should be the focus of a debate...suddenly will be brought back in and bring the democratic party to it's knees.
If you think that this debate was important as it laid... then if you got your candidate... I would be worried about where this country is heading... ... you now say that those are the issues that a debate should be prioritizing...what do you think will happen if Hillary and the republiicans start having debates. She can't turn away from those scandals during the debates and say...we need to focus on healthcare...we need to focus on the war...we need to focus on the planet...when you all have been arguing for this type of debate being the right type of debate.
but all that matters is that your candidate win. Just dumb.

Charlie Gibson gave us the FIRST adult and intelligent examination of the candidate's personal ghosts. The fawning general media has chosen to overlook the critical elements of each person who would like to be given authority to command the "red button" of nuclear protection. Even George sounded like he is growing up. GOOD WORK.

This was the worst debate I have ever watched. Leave the debates to MSNBC or CNN. Of course, thanks to your nonsense, now there won't be anymore for awhile.

once again the pot calling the kettle black.
she claims he's dirty while all along hubby pardoned 1 and commuted the other.
i want to know on who behalf was the pardon and commuted was done for? wouldn't it be funny if William Ayres contacted Billy and asked him to pardon and commute them?
or even better yet if it was Hillary who was contacted ,and it was Hillary who pushed through he pardon

HoosierSue: You are so right about Obama. I am glad that George opened up the eyes of the public because a lot of us didn't know he knew the underground dogs that they are and going to their house. People cannot blame Hillary for anything that Bill Clinton did by commuting their sentence but I don't think Hillary would have done that. When the president is in charge the wife has no say so. There probably is more dirt on Obama that hasn't come out yet but it will and if elected the people will be kicking themselves in the butt. He is the worst candidate that ran for president of this country. And this generation of fools are voting for him. He is desperate to win PA and I hope the people wake up before its too late. Howard Dean wants Obama to win because he endorsed him and that's why he's after the superdelegates to vote now. The primaries are not over yet so he just has to wait.

George Stephanopolous should have told viewers that he worked for former President Bill Clinton.
Posted by: Ton | Apr 18, 2008 7:11:14 AM
This is perfect I ask everyone to scroll down this posting and look at which supporters sayISSUES...and which want to just play "gotcha"
This issue is bad for BOTH of them...and more for Clinton...but it is not what we should be discussing in this kind of detail crap...when we have two candidates who want to continue "cowboy diplomacy" and we are going down the tubes.
Posted by: dl | Apr 18, 2008 6:39:13 AM
of course people care that people dies but these are people that numerous people in all sides of the political debate have been involved with for the past few years...
and Sean Hannity (the pinnacle of the idea in today's day "How the he** did this guy...sorry, destructive 5th grade angry moron, truly... get to have a national microphone ...
and those of course who need an issue to push for their candidate and would rather focus on this rather than who wants to put American military bases all over the world and imperialize our military ...hello "umbrella" woman.
Why is this still not being discussed and debated... that the woman who is stirring this up says she wants a military agreement with numberous countries that agree to go under our protection if they don't pursue nuclear energy and it's potential military hints... against anything Iran does to them in a form of attack...hello we are not the worlds policeman ...that is how we got attacked in the first place...
WHY are wenot screaming about this... the buzz is so high about this stupid stuff that no one is listening to what she said at the debate. Do people realize what that idea brings financially, reactionary from the world...from the people who are starving in places that are harboring questions whether to join the terrorists?
This issue is a distraction...and I am starting to get angry now that people are like"IIII heard about this 4 months ago why werten't we talking about it then?" stop! we need to talk about the issues...not continue this stupid oold politics.

You want proof that ABC bombed this debate?? When the hot topic of all the news outlets is the moderators you know you did something bad... Enough said.. Get over it Hillary supporters. Obama will be the Nominee. Will you take a pledge with me?? I pledge that if by some miracle Hillary gets the nomination i will support her candidacy with word of mouth , volunteer and money. Can you pledge to do the same if Obama wins?? If you cant then you are not a real democrat and you help re-elect George w. Bush.

Did you hear Obama say, "We don't exchange ideas on a regular basis."
What ideas are they exchanging? Perhaps along the lines of when they worked through the Woods Fund to funnel money to the PLO through Khalidi?
Yeah. Those are great ideas.

I've known about William Ayers for at least 4 months now. Why has it taken so long for his name to come up in the mainstream media? Because they have been protecting Obama. Obama has many such troubling relationships throughout his life, starting with his Muslim schooling in Indonesia.
Obama links himself to a personal history and American icons that are meant to salve the populus mentality: Kansas, single mother, underprivileged grandparents, JFK, MLK, Lincoln, Bobby Kennedy. The truth is far from these Norman Rockwell platitudes.
Hillary isn't feeding the Republicans fuel. They already know all about Obama and are licking their chops, waiting to spring and attack, and finish him once and for all. The Democrats are fools if they nominate this man.

Hey ABC News guys!
What about asking John McCain if he supports government bailouts of wallstreet and big corporations since he has done so in the past with the "Keating Five".
Posted by: Geeaskit | Apr 18, 2008 6:02:30 AM
ABC News, Here is a real easy question for you to ask John McCain!
John McCain, "Do you or do you not support wholeheartedly G.W. Bush?"
Posted by: Boy Wonder | Apr 18, 2008 5:55:48 AM
If it is the job of ABC News to go after Obama then it is their job to go after McCain. When will ABC News ask McCain on his changing of positions on so many issues?
Posted by: boy wonder | Apr 18, 2008 5:50:06 AM
Since when did ABC News become a pimp for Fox News.? Is the budget so tight that you've had to outsource your research to Hannity? And talk about being out of touch and elitist: is 'doesn't everybody make more than $100,000'Charlie--with those oh so precious glasses--auditioning for a new reality show "The Rich and Famous Journalists of New York City"?
ABC News lost my respect last night.
