A Response to a Conservative's Question About HBO's "Recount"

May 26, 2008 8:26 AM

Over at the conservative Newsbusters, Brent Baker says of HBO's "Recount" movie, which first aired last night, "the weirdest moment came in a scene of a protest held outside the Florida Supreme Court in Tallahassee. A man, holding a Bush-Cheney sign, chanted: 'Peter Jennings and Tom Brokaw have bald spots! Peter Jennings and Tom Brokaw have bald spots!'"

It was indeed weird.

Weirder still when I heard it myself in real life eight years ago.

The scene came from my book about the recount.

(Here's the page in question, courtesy of Google Books. You may note that in real life the guy chanting the impugning of Messrs. Brokaw and Jennings's hair had a bald spot himself. And he wasn't holding a Bush/Cheney sign, but rather was hyping the conservative website Newsmax.com.)

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: it was all so weird down there, the reality can sometimes seem over-the-top.

What a terrible movie. I watched the whole thing to see if it would become a fair depiction of that account. NOT!!!

Can all ABC reporters plug books on this site?

Ilene - Like all libs your argument makes no sense!!

I find it funny that libs can not forget that their candidate lost in 2000 fairly and legally, because Pres. Bush got more votes in Florida but yet the libs forget about the enemy who killed 10000 Americans from 1996 to today!!

How Disgusting!!

I could have sworn that both Obama and Clinton agreed NOT to count Florida and Michigan since those states moved the dates of their primaries ahead of schedule. Which of the two is going back on their word?

What is astonishing that there is no mention of the fact that 7 newspapers, including USA Today did a recount months after the debacle was over and found that Bush actually did win. No mention of that anywhere is this movie (even after it was over) that should have been called "Al Gore's rendition of the Recount".

If you watched Recount last night and you still believe that Florida and MI should not be counted, then I don't know what to say to you. How can you support a candidate that is playing the same game the Bush team did 8 years ago? How can you support this and call yourself a Democrat?

How can a bunch of newspapers prove something that did not happen. The newspapers used a standard of recount which was not used.

With any question issue, if you change the deffinitions, you change the outcome. The myth that Gore won is, just that, a myth.

Didn't several newspapers for a consortium and prove that Gore really won the Florida recount?

It's funny; as I sat and watched recount last evening, it reminded me of how I felt during that time. I was so pissed off and I thought to myself why did I even bother to vote if my vote did not count, and here we are almost eight years later and the DNC has allowed itself to get in a position where they are disinfranchising voters how
ironic I cannot believe that they did not think about this when they decided to disinfranchise the voters in MI and FL instead of penalizing the state party with some type of fine or something, it should have never even come to a discussion about the people loosing their right to vote and have it count, this is their fault and their fault only. The candidates should not have even been asked to sign off on this mess. I am done with the DEMS after 22 years I have realized that they are not the party of the people, they had the nerve to send me a survey/donation letter, I kindly told them about themselves and exactly where they could go. They tried to use Hillary's name on the letter because they got my name from her donor list, that will not work, not now not ever. This movie reminded me of just what these people in these two states probably feel about their voices and their votes not being counted, it is a miscarraige of justice and democracy.

Jake,

Just wanted to say, I don't know if you are a Republican or Democrat. Or if you are a Clinton conspiracy theorist or if you think Obama is a Muslim...that is what is so great about your blog!

Keep up the great work. Hard to find these days but I find you to be a true journalist.

Yes JR, I think they did.

I came to an article about Recount, and there's anti-Obama blog postings? LMAO

Give it up losers. You are nothing but McCain supporters trying to stir the pot and give your guy a chance. Oops, here comes Bob Barr!

I voted for Bush in 2004. I'm voting Obama in 2008 and feeling d-mn good about it. What does that tell you about your precious base?

Posted by: LR | May 26, 2008 11:13:20 AM

Where would Obama be if the news of all his past with Ayers, Wright, guns and religion had came out earlier in the voting process.

The Demo Party is a laughing stock. Hillary should just run Independent and let the Demo party of which I have been a member since Jimmy Carter days....go by the wayside.

I will not be involved with an unAmerican machine anymore. I will vote for McCain or independent if O wins the Demo nomination.
