Arianna: McCain Told Me He Didn't Vote for Bush in 2000

May 05, 2008 6:38 PM

Arianna Huffington writes that Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., told her several years ago that he didn't vote for George W. Bush for president in 2000.

"Not true," says a McCain aide. "Consider the source."

Arianna's story: "At a dinner party in Los Angeles not long after the 2000 election, I was talking to a man and his wife, both prominent Republicans. The conversation soon turned to the new president. 'I didn't vote for George Bush' the man confessed. 'I didn't either,' his wife added. Their names: John and Cindy McCain (Cindy told me she had cast a write-in vote for her husband).

"The fact that this man was so angry at what George Bush had done to him, and at what Bush represented for their party, that he did not even vote for him in 2000 shows just how far he has fallen since then in his hunger for the presidency. By abandoning his core principles and embracing Bush -- both literally and metaphorically -- he has morphed into an older and crankier version of the man he couldn't stomach voting for in 2000."

Whom do you believe?

Another point I nearly missed...

Either way. McCain loses. If it's true he voted for Bush both times, then his bluster about being a Maverick all those years is shown to be a lie, and the Dems have another peice of evidence of his support for the least favored president of all time.

If it turns out Huffington is telling the truth, then it shows that his cozying up to the Right Wing has been all for show, and he alienates them.

Perhaps, if Huffington was trying to score political points with this revelation, it doesn't matter at all what the truth is. Simply pushing McCain to talk about who he voted for was guaranteed to damage him one way or another.

Another preview of the rough ride he has ahead of him. Everything he says will be a balancing act, trying to please Bush's old base without looking so much like Bush that he alienates the center and left, and vice verse.

That's the secret Dem weapon this fall, but nobody's covering it quite like that.

Well, we should ask ourselves which one's the politician? Another question, who stands to gain the most from this issue?

McCain is the politician here, and he's desperate to erase his "maverick" image so the Right Wing will embrace him, so he's not likely to fess up if the story is true.

Huffington has more publicity than he does these days. Her site has broken some pretty significant stories these days, she's been on several talk shows, and her book is out and getting lots of attention. In short, she doesn't really need the publicity, so if this is some sort of stunt to generate interest, it's not really neccessary.

She wouldn't risk the bad press she'll get if she's shown to be a liar on this story, and McCain really has a strong motive to cover this story up and lie.

I'll go with the Bush Clone for $500 please Alex.

Whether this is true or not, it gives Huffington the opportunity to feed the fire; the idea that McCain would be just "8 more years of Bush" (terms used by Dean of the DNC)is grossly exaggerated by the liberals.

I believe McCain. I can't stand that woman Arianna. Talk about SHRILL!! I cannot stand to hear her voice.

I will vote, for the second time in my life, for an American. Either Hillary or McCain pass that test for me. Obama may grow to be an American some time in the future... Remains to be seen. As it stands now, few Americans are ready for a cabinet that will likely include Jesse Jackson and Louis Farrakhan.

Ms. Huffington is the left-wing (convenient) equivalent of Mr. Limbaugh. Both say provocative things for money. Both could not care less for people.
Both are quite self-serving.
The only difference is Mr. Limbaugh mostly accepts that he is in it for the revenue but Ms. Huffington portrays herself as The Savior thus several notches lower than Mr. Limbaugh.

Wasn't Everybody Stepping on American Flags?

Marathon Pundit finds a photo of Obama's friend, donor, and former fellow board member Bill Ayers, stepping on an American flag.......

Eh, it's a long time ago, right?....

It was the '60s. .....

Every young person did things they regretted back then.......

Oh, wait, this photo is from 2001... the same year Obama served together on the board of the Woods Fund and Obama accepted a campaign contribution from him.

I voted for President Bush not once but twice. The only way I would ever vote for John McCain is if Hillary wins the nomination. A proud Republican who cannot wait to vote for Obama!

Do you really want to end the war?

Then bring back the draft. It is obscene that we are waging a war of such import without a draft.

It would be no surprise, as McCain's feeling toward Bush in those days was well known.

As for Arianna, who married a rich gay man, and then divorced him and took all of his money, well, just wave a few dollars in her direction, and she'll vote for whomever you like.

I had dinner with Arianna and John McCain together in bed. I read it on the internet, so it must be true!

WOW !!! this place sounds like the haven for extreme right wing apologists. With all the hell republicans put us through right from GWB Snr to his son Doubya "Nukila weapon" Bush, I never thought that anyone in his right senses will even consider any republican again in the white house anytime soon.
You are all the same. If you vote McCain in November, then America is cursed for ever because we will keep moving from country to country fighting these irresponsible wars and wasting innocent lives especially those of our children, at the slightest excuses.

oh yeah, im sure we ALL belive arriana huffington on this... she would NEVER try to start controversy with the conservatives.. lol
very weak attempt.

Please don't give this woman any coverage. She covets attention.

She was a regular on Keith Olbermann and I only watched to see which of the two would hyperventilate themselves to death first. I lost interest. Post when it happens and I will read it here at ABC.

Rush Limbaugh also collects dirt of other people and succeeds. I hope the Repubs in this blog lambasts him for the same acts!!!!

I have to give John McCain a little more credit than I've been giving him, but I'm not surprised that he didn't vote for Bush. The Bush campaign said some pretty nasty things about John and Cindy McCain throughout the Republican primaries of 2000.

Fortunately we still have a viable candidate in the running as the replacement of GWB. Of course that candidate is Hillary, she is the only candidate remaining in the race with experience and intelligence. She is the only qualified choice that we have this election. If she doesn't get the Democratic nomination she will either run as an Independent or as a running mate with McCain.

I understand that several of the Republican leaders prefer her over McCain so she might be the nominee and McCain as the VP. Counting Florida and Michigan she has garnered more popular vote than any of the other candidates in the running, regardless of party affiliation.

Hillary '08 - No yes we can here...just yes we will!

The truth is the man whom I so admired and voted for in previous elections has become a stooge for Bush. He is such a disappointment to me and all the other military vets like me who counted on him to remain true to his principles. Amazing he has any puppet followers still out there.

McCain didn't vote for Bush? In my eyes that's a huge plus!
Oh, and with the claim of "thirst for power" - like your boy Obama, who is just that a boy - inexperienced and certainly not in the position to run the nation at this time - isn't?
What's the rush Obama, I seriously don't understand? So little experience - could it be you knew if Clinton would win, you'd have to wait 8 more years and by then you'd actually have a track record?

"Consider the source", is a very good response to the likes of Huffington.

Her "Post" is nothing but an incestuous, political tabloid magazine where the politically connected go to rat each other out.

It's like watching a rat eat his own tail.
