Clinton Attacks Obama on Guns
May 04, 2008 4:13 PM
Her name may be "synonymous with gun control," as an NRA official recently told me, but Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, is attacking Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, on guns in a new mailer being sent to Hoosiers.
Check it out HERE.
On the front of the mailer: "Where does Barack Obama really stand on guns?"
On the back: "Depends on who Barack Obama is talking to.
"First, Barack Obama told a group in Chicago he favored a ban on the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns (IVI-IPO Candidate Questionnaire).
"Then, Barack Obama told people in Idaho he was for the 2nd Amendment, in order to get their votes (AP, 2/2/08).
"And just this month, Barack Obama accused people in rural places and small towns of being "bitter" people who "cling to guns" (Huffington Post, 411/08).
"What does Barack Obama really believe?"
- jpt
UPDATE: Our friend Ben Smith at Politico has some hilarious new details about the nonexistent German rifle used in the mailer.

Hillary as gun rights protector. What a joke! Another example of her phoniness...
Posted by: indy_voter | May 5, 2008 10:34:13 AM
Obama sat on a Board that tried to dismantle the 2nd amendment. Hillary wants to take guns out of the hands of children and leave them in the hands of hunters.
Obama on this issue like most issues has had conflicting views.
I could care less if a picture of a gun is the real deal or not.
Like most Americans I understand the difference between getting rid of assault weapons and getting rid of the 2nd amendment. I have no use for guns. I do want to maintain the right to bear arms in America.

Bill Clinton was always a closet 2nd
amendment advocate. Streisand thought
he carried a Howitzer. Hillary knew it
was a water-pistol....so did Monica.
The Secret Service pretended not to notice....."nothing to see here....."

Bill Clinton's gun had a hair-trigger.
Hillary now sounds right of the NRA.
Obama sounds left of common sense. They're all card-carrying lefties....
so you sort it out. By the way, I think
that Bill would agree that guns
never fed a hungry child...or some such
blather.

From Ben Smith at Politico:
Sen. Hillary Clinton’s mailing attacking Sen. Barack Obama’s record on guns appears to include a striking visual gaffe: The image of the gun pictured on the face of the mailing is reversed, making it a nonexistent left-handed model of the Mauser 66 rifle.
To make matters worse, a prominent gun dealer said, it’s an expensive German gun with customized features that make it clearly European.
“The gun in the photo does not exist,” said Val Forgett III, resident of Navy Arms in Martinsburg, W.Va. Forgett's company was Mauser’s agent in the United States when the gun was released, and it sold Mauser guns here again in the 1990s. “The bolt is facing to the left side of the receiver, making it a left-handed bolt action rifle, indicating whoever constructed and approved the mailer did not recognize the image has been reversed.”
Forgett said the error would be obvious to sportsmen.
“I find it laughable on its face,” he said. “It’s like a picture of Babe Ruth hitting right-handed.”
The gun's image in Clinton's mailing is above; a correct image of the gun is below.
Other rifle enthusiasts e-mailed Politico after an image of Clinton’s mailing was posted to this blog.
“I bet the Clinton folks did a mirror flip on the stock image to make it look more ‘aesthetic,’” wrote one, David Phillips. “What a latte-sipping, Gucci-wearing thing to do.”
The Mauser 66, released in 1966 and no longer manufactured, is a high-end hunting rifle that found military use as a sniper rifle. In Clinton’s mailing, it’s pictured with a double-set trigger, a customization that’s popular in Europe but “almost unheard of in the United States,” Forgett said.
“It’s a $2,200 German import — it’s hardly typical of what the average workingman in Indiana uses,” he said.

Yes finally someone with diplomacy and not your stupid cowboy style tactics. I'm for Obama. We need not to go to war with every country. I saw Obama on meet the press and he was very impressive.
Posted by: d | May 4, 2008 8:59:29 PM
Can we just finish the 2 wars we are in before we even think about Iran. My god, Hillary will have to reinstate the draft if that happens. Our troops are too thin as it is.
Posted by: lily | May 4, 2008 8:45:35 PM
“MR. RUSSERT: Would you respond against Iran?
SEN. OBAMA: It–Israel is a ally of ours. It is the most important ally we have in the region, and there’s no doubt that we would act forcefully and appropriately on any attack against Iran, nuclear or otherwise.”
NOTICE HE SAYS ANY ATTACK AGAINST IRAN!!!!!!!!!
Obama is a danger to the USA

To Countallthevotes. If Senator Obama really proposed then passed this tough gun legislation, half of his voters in his district would be in jail. Believe that this is just more political pandering on his part.
It is not the guns that are so bad, it is those who thinks they are a BIG MAN when holding a gun.
Honesty, strength, intergity, judgment and experience are totally lacking in Senator Obama. Vote Clinton.
Posted by: Irish Gram | May 4, 2008 8:08:44 PM
dear Omen
I am glad you are wanting to talk about and have me ask you about the issues
because you guy obama does not.
I have read his web site. I have gone and looked at his record also.
I'll be back in one hour and we can talk about the issues.
I have been asking obama supporters to talk about issues ever since I started writing comments.
I am sorry you think what I have written is garbage though, but so be it
i have a right to my opinion and if all you have to say about it is call it garbage ok.
Posted by: jgaw | May 4, 2008 7:52:57 PM
Omentum.
You keep claiming that Clinton 'insulted' you.
Clinton could say she wanted world peace and it would 'insult you' .
You keep trying to suggest that Obamas backers who listed all this crap on his website means Obama knows more about issues than Clinton.
Obama never talks about issues period. He talks about philisophical 'hope' and 'change' in broad strokes.
Obama has no resume. The american population doesnt KNOW him at all.
So questions about his past, and character matter a LOT about Obama.
Im sure once Obama has been around on a national stage 20 years, diggin up his past wont be an issue.
Obama practicing Black Liberation Theology for 20 years will cost him the white house.
If the republicans can swift boat John Kerry over a LOT LESS, they can crush Obama over these issues.
Posted by: tomdavie | May 4, 2008 7:51:55 PM
if in the beginning black people like everyone else had known earlier what they know about obama now he would not be in the lead.
the media let the american voters down,
obama and is crew played the race card first-they had to-to get the black support away from sen. clinton.
there was no advantage of sen. clinton to play the race card. obama and co. did first. and they did it in a real slick way.
if the young had come out and voted in 2000-bush would not have been in office.
if the young had come out and voted in 2004-bus would not have been in office.
if sen. clinton should win the rest of the primaries and it goes on and the super del end up giving it to obama-
we had better get ready to say
president mccain.
because the black clinton supporters will not vote for obama because of the way they have been treated by black obama supporters.
if you listen sen. clinton IS trying to help the poor and working class. obama does not have enough conviction in his voice to make me think he even believes what he is saying. is speaking is patterned like a black preacher=rev. wright i suppose.
all together now:
we all march with
president mccain
president mccain
president mccain
we all march with president mccain.
Posted by: jgaw | May 4, 2008 7:47:14 PM
Lol @ gloria with the tried and true: I used to support Clinton but now switched to Obama blah blah blah.
We Clinton supporters have seen absolutely nothing by obama to honestly suggest he is the better candidate.
In fact, since the wright story broke, voters are moving AWAY from him, not for him.
Hillary Clinton has been around for DECADES.
You have seen her act all these years, yet ONLY NOW decide she is a 'phony'
After all these years.
BS.
Why do Obama people INSIST on lying all the time.
15 year olds behind a computer who claim to be a 60 year old white woman. But then use 15 year old liberal logic to justify it.
Posted by: tomdavie | May 4, 2008 7:37:32 PM
obama' supporters black and white have it all sewn up.
If you are a black clinton supporter you are a sellout
if you are a white clinton supporter you are a closet republican.
and we understand obama supporters your frustration and why you must resort to when in conversation about sen. clinton and obama you reduce yourselves to the above statements.
who can remember all of the flowery things he says in his prepared, prepaid speeches-so no matter what the setting is all you can come away with is hope and change.
obama supporter to another obama supporter leaving an obama rally
1os-"didn't he give a great speech"?
2os-"yes, inspiring"
2os-"did you hear what he said about..
I missed the last bit"
1os-"yes, I heard it-it was hope"
2os-"oh yes, and change"
2os-"did i miss anything else/"
1os-"oh no-it was all about hope and change"-and he was brilliant.
2os-"yes he is just brilliant"
after the election
president obama;
obama supporters:
"I didn't know that is what he stood for, if I had know that is what he stood for I wouldn't have voted for him.
I don't go along with that"

West Coast Mess:
I'm impressed by your research skills!
I'm also amazed that Clintonistas have had even limited success in painting Obama as the "elite" candidate running against Hillabeans, who defines elite!
We'll see on Wednesday, Mess, which one of us is whining and which one is still winning! No tsunami is coming, though, sorry you'll be so disappointed!
Obama 2008 -- Yes, WE CAN!!!

I was a Clinton supporter and voted for her in our primary but now I am a Obama supporter. I think his ideas are what we need in this country. My X girl says everything that they can to get your vote. We as a country don't need assault weapons if you want to fire one join the Army and you can shoot until you get shot. As far as the gas tax is concern she can't get it pass and she knows it. Even if she could which she can't that crazy BUSH would veto it. We have got to get a footing on the economy and my X girl is using so call tough talk to pander the will of the people that are in need the most. The Wright controversy is being used by the media to keep the argument on the front burner to see which one can get the most ratings. The 20 years or so that he was there and the ranting of his sermons started after 911 so the media has shown us. If it was before then they would have played some of them. So it seems his craziest didn't start until then and maybe he has developed dementure.
Posted by: Gloria P | May 4, 2008 7:13:12 PM
jgaw,
You are right!! First we had the "Race Speech," then the "Addendum to the Race Speech" and now we are due the "Gun Speech". I think Obama did deliver the "Working Class Speech" in Indiana with the rolled up sleeves and "food stamps" plug. Note, working class people do not really qualify for food stamps, for the most part. Shouldn't someone on the Obama staff tell him that?
Posted by: countallthevotes | May 4, 2008 7:13:04 PM
Americans have a love affair with guns.
It's sick and obscene.
The proof is in the pudding...look at the number of murders there every year.
Oh I know....guns don't kill people.
Beatles said it well..."Happiness is a warm gun"
Posted by: Ascoli | May 4, 2008 7:06:49 PM
Obama believes whatever it takes to get elected. Just like Clinton. Just like Mc Cain.
It really comes down to character. You can have a guy with charisma, or a girl who is tough as nails and a fighter, or an old guy who has an honest and open approach.
Posted by: tomdavie | May 4, 2008 6:50:27 PM
We already know where Hillary stands on Gun theft. she is bound and determined to go down in history as the cause of the next shot heard around the world, remember what our founders did when the British tried taking our guns.
Posted by: Patriot2008 | May 4, 2008 6:46:24 PM
Obama isn't pandering...anyone who has ever lived in a big city, especially one as violent as Chicago, can have a difference of an opinion regarding gun control dependent upon the locale. Duh!

As americans we have many rights and one of them is to own a firearm, this will not change anytime soon. I grew up handling firearms my family were avid hunters, although I didn't really embrace hunting. What ever people think of the NRA they taught me how to safely and properly handle firearms along with my father. I am very glad I have the knowledge even though I do not own a gun today as an adult. I think taking the NRA firearm courses should reguired when anyone,..anyone wants to purchase any type of gun in this country. The NRA is a powerfull lobby, but I think they should help to make people become more responsible with there firearms.
Posted by: Jim | May 4, 2008 6:37:51 PM
Obama is pandering again. He is that kind of politician.
Posted by: cindy in nc | May 4, 2008 6:29:30 PM
well, it is according to who is asking obama,
and if you press him for specifics -
he'll make a speech about it.
I don't mean to be sarcastic
but-he told us a few years ago he was not ready to be president.
he should have stayed with that
if he wins my fear is
before it is all over with
we will all wish he had

N.B., the Obama gun history I posted from the Chicago Defender, 1999, used to be on Obama for President website. It was scrubbed from his site in Dec. or Jan.!

"What does Barack Obama really believe?"
Exactly.
Posted by: Leslie | May 4, 2008 6:20:29 PM
I hate guns, wouldn't have one if you paid me. But you can't win if you openly oppose them, the NRA is too powerful.
Posted by: Toad | May 4, 2008 6:07:51 PM
now watch and see, now that the nation has had a chance to see this, (jake, the whole nation does read your blog, right?)
obama will not be talking specifics to tell us where he stands on guns,
what he is going to do is attack sen. clinton on what she has said.
nothing original comes from obama.
if obama gets into the white house
he and his handlers will not have sen. clintons brain to work from-where will this country be? and where will we be headed? john kerry, dean, bradley as advisors? heaven help us.
did anyone see the picture of ayers jumping up and down on the flag?
this was 2003-not when obama was 8.
I am going to refuse to believe anyone would hate sen. clinton so much that they would rather turn our country over to an inexperienced unknown.
maybe obama would be a good president in 2012-after sen. clinton has cleared up some of the problems we have in this country.
It will be easier for her to do
than obama.
Posted by: jgaw | May 4, 2008 5:59:43 PM
Jackt51,
As I understand it you are also a veteran of the past failed Kerry campaign as well. It seems like you would have learned your lesson then not to place your bets on someone that is viewed as aloof, elite, and a bit too far left. I actually think Obama is not a bad guy now, though, since he has denounce Wright, and I'm willing to give him a chance on the VP ticket. By the way, you and Thinking are about the last ones standing facing the final Hillary tsunami. It's getting fun, don't you think.
Posted by: WestCoastMessenger | May 4, 2008 5:59:15 PM
jgaw,
Amen! What an eloquent posting calling it as it is. The unfortunate truth is our people aren't ready for prime time. To blindly throw their support to an inexperienced, untested and unknown entity, just because he's black, exposes our political ignorance and reverse racist attitudes. BOTH Clintons have done a LOT for Black people, and I guess it just proves the theory that no good deed goes unpunished! I sure hope our people wake up and see the only one "pandering for votes" is Obama. He feels "entitled" to the Black vote, although not doing anything to EARN it. His pandering for White approval puts Blacks on the back burner because we're such a sure thing! I DON'T think so!!!
GO HILLARY!!!

Obama and Gun Control, Blast from the Past:
His record isn't likely to win back the rural "pro-gun" voters who've fled to the Republicans in recent years, likely costing Gore the election in 2000. From the Chicago Defender, Dec. 13, 1999:
Sweeping federal gun control legislation proposed by Sen. Barack Obama (D-13th) would increase the penalties on gun runners who are flooding Chicago's streets with illegal weapons.
At an anti-gun rally held at the Park Manor Christian Church, 600 E. 73rd St., headed by the Rev. James Demus, Obama also said he's backing a resolution being introduced into the City Council by Alds. Toni Preckwinkle (4th), Ted Thomas (15th), Leslie Hairston (5th) to call for a "shot-free" millennium celebration.
Obama outlined his anti-gun plan that includes increased penalties for the interstate transportation of firearms. The maximum penalty now for bringing a gun across the border is 10 years in prison. Obama is proposing to make it a felony for a gun owner whose firearm was stolen from his residence which causes harm to another person if that weapon was not securely stored in that home. [!!!]
He's proposing restricting gun purchases to one weapon a month and banning the sale of firearms at gun shows except for "antique" weapons. Obama is also proposing increasing the licensing fee to obtain a federal firearms license.
He's also seeking a ban on police agencies from reselling their used weapons even if those funds are used to buy more state-of-the-art weapons for their agencies. Obama wants only those over 21 who've passed a basic course to be able to buy or own a firearm.
He's proposing that all federally licensed gun dealers sell firearms in a storefront and not from their homes while banning their business from being within five miles of a school or a park. He's also banning the sale of 'junk" handguns like the popular Saturday Night Specials.
Obama is requiring that all people working at a gun dealer undergo a criminal background check. He's also asking that gun manufacturers be required to develop safety measures that permit only the original owner of the firearm to operate the weapon purchased.
Additionally, he wants an increase of the funds for schools to teach anger management skills for youth between the ages of 5-13. Obama is also seeking to increase the federal taxes by 500 percent on the sale of firearm, ammunition [sic] -- weapons he says are most commonly used in firearm deaths

jrs,
as obama said, as soon as he got into the senate, he started planning his run for president.
the media did not do its job early on
obama gave broad reaching speeches
and left us to fill in the blanks
if we knew then what we know now about obama he would not be in the lead.
we all know sen. clinton and even with knowing all the things some think they know. she was still in the lead.
obama just got lucky.
if obama gets into office, we are going to regret it.
sen. clinton runs cirlces around obama
on the issues that face us.say whatever you want, there is no denying
she is the smarter of the three,
and maybe that is why so many dislike her. they know she is the smartest, and she should be president-know we need someone like her to be president.
but many are angry because she seems hard to trust.
well as she said today, and I believe her in her public life-she has tried to do whatever she said she would do.
and there is no denying she has tried to help level the playing field.
to my black brothers and sisters i want to say.
when tom joyner was on tv helping the hbcu'-raising money-who was there by his side-a clinton
when tom joyner was working with bill gates to get the needles and aids meds prices reduced, for a lot of black people in american and africa-bill clinton
when tavis smileys state of the black union (which happens every year-and in presidental years the candidates go)
who went-sen. clinton
when the black press wanted to interview
the presidental candidates who went-sen. clinton.
now for all the blind loyalty you are giving obama in voting for him-because you think he is the one
where has obama been when trying to help the special needs of the black community.
you all say sen. clinton has only done things to advance her politcal career.
I say that is not true-but if doing good is what that is to you then so be
it.
but where has obama been?
he has only done things to advance his political career.
and from what we know about him now
it has been not a road of change and hope but a road of where do i need to step next, and step on next (alice palmer) to get where I want to go.
what does barack obama believe?
about anything...hes a heartbeat away from the white house and we american voters still don't know.
you supporters obama have to be careful of the words of his that he has told you to defend him-because while you are defending him with words you heard from him-turn on the tv, and if need be he has already changed what he was saying.

I know no one who will vote for now even if they may have voted for him before. He is a loose cannon waiting to misfire again. Can't trust the guy. And why does he want to keep the gang members in his district in guns? Did these people help elect him? He keeps changing his mind when the wind changes direction. Say or do anything to get elected is his motto. Gotta have that power.

Hey Robert Hewson, -- Good for you bringing that up, at least Hillary has the "cojones" to face real unscripted town halls and answer direct questions from all people including the Obama supporters! Now, where is Obama? he went hiding from the debates because he was asked by ABC the direct questions his followers never answered to him. He still has a lot to answer but he chose not because he has no plans, no real ideas to solve real problems, instead of offering real solutions, all he does is attack every single proposal Hillary does and his campaign waste millions of dollars trashing her and distorting her records just to distract the people and let him avoid to answer the real questions. That's why he only goes to MSNBC or NBC or CNN, his favorite biased networks. How he can really lead the country when he really never ever been a leader even in Illinois, never fought for something in the Illinois Senate or i the US Senate, all he like is the backstabbing and back room politics...and of course give high level rhetorical speeches with teleprompter.
Obama is not good for the country. No record, no leadership proven, no agenda, no experience, he is all blah blah blah blah. We don't even know where is stand for!
Hillary 2008!

Tom, I am assuming that you are white, please do not try to educate people on the black churches because you watch Sean Hannity the other day. Obama has sponsored TWO pieces of legislation in his 4 years as a US Senator, TWO!!! They were both pretty meaningless bills if I remember right. This guy is not ready for prime time, all talk and the American people are caught up in his rhetoric because he is an eloquent speaker. Think hard about if we want this guy as the most powerful leader in the world.

Like "Thinking," I am also a veteran and a strong supporter of Senator Obama. And we are joined by many veterans.
While McCain will certainly have some veteran support -- perhaps from the same swiftboaters who pilloried him in 2000 -- more and more veterans are realizing that the Republican and Bush/Cheney policies of the last eight years have weakened our military and created horrible conditions for our returning veterans.

All you white OBAMA suckers, do not regret later and say you were not informed.
This is what Obama learnt in the church for the last 20 years. The pastor is a preacher of Black Liberation Theology.
Black theology or Black liberation theology is the theology of Elijah Mohammed, founder of the Nation of Islam theology of liberation
Black theology refuses to accept a God who is not identified totally with the goals of the black community. If God is not for us and against white people, then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him. The task of black theology is to kill Gods who do not belong to the black community ... Black theology will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy. What we need is the divine love as expressed in Black Power, which is the power of black people to destroy their oppressors here and now by any means at their disposal. Unless God is participating in this holy activity, we must reject his love.
To me this sounds like teachings of Osama.

And he will win! The ultra-left has hijacked our party. Pelosi, Dean, Kennedy and all the rest are bound to defeat the moderate Hillary.
She'll call for unity and guess what! All the bloggers and almost all Hillary supporters will follow her lead like lemmings. Never mind, she has to do it to continue her career. But what about all the folk with moderate principles? What will they follow the guy they now seem to intensely dislike?

That tells you a lot. Obama does not have the support of Veterans. Why should he? He surrounds himself with people that are anti-American, including his wife, Michelle, who thinks America is "mean" and was not proud of her country.
Obama should put his hand over his heart instead of standing there scratching himself like a fool.
