Hillary (and Bill?) Loan Her Campaign $6 Million More

May 07, 2008 9:54 AM

The Clinton campaign reports today that in the last month Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, has loaned herself $6.425 million in the last month -- bringing her grand total of "loans" to her campaign $11.425 million, putting on in place to be the second biggest self-funder this election cycle, behind only former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

The loans were:

$5 million on April 11; $1 million on May 1; and $425,000 on May 5.

The dates are significant because she still felt the need to loan herself money even after her impressive win in Pennsylvania on April 22 -- meaning the $10 million she raised in the 24 hours after that win was not enough.

One other point of possible significance.

After her $5 million January loan was disclosed, Clinton said "I loaned the campaign $5 million from my money."

MY money, she said.

"The loan is from Senator Clinton's share of their joint resources," a Clinton spokesman told reporters, clarifying the point even further.

Sen. Clinton earned slightly more than $10 million (including an $8 million advance) for her memoir, Living History.

She has now loaned herself more than that -- $11.425 million -- meaning, presumably, she may now be lending her campaign funds former President Bill Clinton earned.

Their joint assets are their joint assets -- but she's the one who split the hairs on "my money" back in February.

More to the point, this news may give the media more of a reason than ever to inquire as to how the former President has made his money -- something he has been reluctant to discuss.

Why would we want Hillary as president to turn around our economy when she can't drum up financial support anymore and her campaign is so in debt?

We all know that she got big money from the democratic power elite and they are tapped out.

Sounds like Barack's supporters are more convinced he will win I guess.

She needs help. She should attend Gambler's Anonymous.

Posted by: Debbie | May 8, 2008 2:36:18 PM

No! She raised the money less than 24 hours after Indiana win. Or they're probably beginning to see the need for sincerety and frankness.

I wonder how much money Obama contributed to his campain. He is millon dollars maker too. So much money he collected are from those who are struggling to make living.

As an i who voted for her I just changed my vote---I keep hearing that she got a clear win in Florida and Michigan-- sure if you opponent isn't on the ballott orrr told not to campaign in those States then you are going to sneak in and get some votes. Are we really that stupid? My friend in Virginia is making little blue Monica
dresses with a cigar belt buckel, just in case she gets the nod!

So... why is it she keeps 'loaning' her campaign money??? IIRC when other candidates have 'self-funded' themselves, it has not been publicized as 'loans'. I'm guessing there is some 'payback' option with a loan... maybe when her campaign files for bankruptcy she can claim the loan as a 'loss' on her taxes??? Maybe the loan can sit until she resurects ANY campaign again and then she can first and foremost pay herself back??? There has to be some reason she has chosen to 'loan' her campaign the money, versus just giving it to the campaign.... Smells if you ask me...

One should question why she is not getting funding from these uneducated white and blue collar workers that are supposedly flocking to her... after all Obama seems to be getting plenty of funding from his college students and first time voters. Why is it that the suposedly uneducated white/blue collar workers aren't willing to put their wallets behind their votes the way the young or educated people are???

Why is is Clinton keeps saying Obama is an elitist and out of touch when she's the one able to loan her campaign more than $10 million???? How many of her supporters could loan anyone $10 million??? She's so out of touch with society and those she supposedly represents. She lives a very different life than most americans... Obama is way closer to the average Joe on the street... probably the closest of all three candidates...

Remember when President Clinton left the White House he was so much in debt he was asking for public donations to help pay his legal fees. Much of their accumulated wealth since then has come from his appeal on the speaking circuit.

This campaign so far may have done great damage to his appeal and his legacy. He may have also done enough damage to his relationship with blacks that he may no longed be welcome at his Harlem office. Now it seems that this campaign is cutting deeply into his bank account.

After his Presidency, they said he owed Hillary a lot. Well he is paying now and he is paying dearly.

If the Us presidencey was for trade, Mitt Romney would have won the republican nomination. Hill the Bosnian General it is too late and too little. The 109 million will not make it, the 800 000 from Urube in Colombia will not make it, the cheap gas holiday an idea stolen from McCain will not make it and old politics will not make it this time around. God bless America and God bless Obama. OBAMA08.

Posted by: BKMC | May 8, 2008 12:58:58 AM

Notice that when it's her money, it's a "loan" not a donation. She wants you to donate, but she "loans" her money. Sign of confidence ?

J,

Don't you get it, Obama is getting money from common people like you and me. most of his money is being given from Americans donating $50.00 dollars or less, a lot of people given him money.

You are just in a state of brain freeze.

you want the same old Problem State of American.

But, YES WE CAN

Posted by: American9 | May 7, 2008 10:22:25 PM

mpwdc, what do you mean Obama is a spoiler. So he ran against Hillary. He didn't split the party. Hillary supporters did. Most Obama supporters will vote for Hillary because we know McCain will destroy are economy even more. That should be your #1 priority unless of course you're not hurting. But I am. But please don't blame Obama for getting the votes. You are taking this way too personal.

Posted by: lisa | May 7, 2008 10:03:43 PM

How can you call Obama someone who "unites" when he chose to run this election cycle against the best woman candidate that we've ever had? His candidacy has SPLIT the Democrats right down the middle. If ANYONE thinks this Party is coming back together after August..no matter who the nominee is...they are wrong. The Party is cooked and McCain will be elected in November.I will never vote for Obama, the face of inexperience and unanswered questions. He is the "spoiler" of 2008.

Posted by: mpwdc | May 7, 2008 9:52:31 PM

We know that some of Bill's "speaking" engagements netting him big bucks from the Colombians. We know the Chinese have contributed heavily to his "foundation". We do need to now the rest if she stays in this race.

After all, aren't there laws requiring disclosure?

So, she has loaned her campaign a total of $11,425,000! This means that she would have to work in the White House for 28+ years to recoup the $400,000 annual salary of the POTUS!

Talk about Power Trippin'!

OBAMA/WEBB '08 & '12

steve
I hope obama does not want the clintons to campaign for him this fall.
don't you?
she should just go back to the senate and get on with her work.
and bill should go on with what he was doing.
she should concede, obama should do the show thing, and let her go on-and not have her around in the fall.

Posted by: justsaying | May 7, 2008 8:40:02 PM

To MPWDC
Does Hillary really care enough or is she just so obsessed with power or desperate enough for that power to put up her own money? You can't trust her. Don't forget. Her husband is the one that stared down the barrel of an international tv camera and repeatedly and deliberately bold faced lied to the entire world. Has everyone forgotten he was impeached in disgrace? She talks about Obama's relationship with his pastor. Look at the company she chose to keep!

If Hillary had this, blah, blah, blah. Obama has this blah, blah. This isn't personal but let it be said that, if your naive enough to think that Obama has the support of big-oil and Hillary doesn't than your just smoke in a chimney. Every politician has help from every avenue. Let's not make simple statements like, he has this and she has that. That's political rambling. Were not politicians, let's not be naive either. I'm not an Obama supporter or Clinton supporter, just an immigrant in Canada, who thinks Americans have been shafted by their Gov't. and elected leaders for too long. What once was a country to be admired has turn to a country in shambles. Of course it can be turned around, at this point all both candidates can expel are words, not actions. Good Luck to the USA.

If Hillary does not stay in the race the working class people need to move to Mexico or overseas. I for one will be voting Republican in the fall if Hillary does not get the nod. There is a first time for everything so I guess I will be changing parties.

Posted by: Reeda Hammons | May 7, 2008 7:20:06 PM

George McGovern's opinion counts for what? These current politicians (Pelosi, Dean and Reid) and people like McGovern need to let this finish out and shut up.

Posted by: J | May 7, 2008 7:07:17 PM

"Hillary won consecutively Ohio, Texas, Pennsylvannia and now Indiana."

There go the fact-challenged again.

Umm--there were the states of WY and MS in between TX and PA, not to mention Guam. (Oh, and not to mention that Obama won more delegates in TX, so....)

I know, I know--they're not BIG states, but I thought one of HRC's recent arguments was that ALL the states should be heard?

Here's the true consecutive string of wins...and they happened after Super Tuesday, Feb. 5th, and they were wins for Obama: LA, NE, WA, VI, ME, D.C., MD, VA, HI, WI, and VT.

So, if we all were more mindful of the facts, this race would have been over after March 4th.

Delegates nominate, and the math is not subjective.

Posted by: Rebecca | May 7, 2008 6:57:13 PM

This is the United States of America last I looked. She has every RIGHT to stay in this until EVERYONE votes.

Posted by: J | May 7, 2008 6:53:14 PM

I was wondering why we don't clearly point out the obvious. HRC, is using her own money to fund her bid for the Whitehouse? Do you not see the irony. If I stated that I was a person of solutions then let's see what her solutions are for raising money to continue her bid. As a presidential candidate, with a plan and not speeches, she should be able to clearly identify how much she needs for each state, how much she intends to raise through each avenue and follow through on it. If your a person of action and your running a deficit within your own campaign, how can you say your a fiscally responsible individual?

Posted by: SuperDelegateToBe | May 7, 2008 6:50:40 PM

We wondered why. During twenty debates Hillary smugly refused to answer hypothetical questions about security sensitive foreign policy issues in the middle east. But, in the last debate she suddenly jumped at the chance to tell the world her secret plan in the extremely hypothetical event that Israel (a country that has an A bomb) is attacked by Iran (a country that does not have an A bomb) and her answer was - nuke Iran. And now we know why.HRC's campaign is in debt for millions and millions of dollars! She needed to impress some rich Jews that are fixated on the security of the state of israel so that they would bail out her campaign. And this souless sick chick is prancing around telling people she is the experienced, best candidate. Let's pray she gives it up before she does any more damage.

Posted by: Madeleine | May 7, 2008 6:40:09 PM

Well I see that when a laymen asks a very pertinent question as to why would anyone in their right mind spend almost ten times what they could earn in salary to obtain the job as President of the free world, but I can also that it is these kind of common sense question that SCAR certain people that live in the world with Dorthy and Toto.

Sure wish the media would go after Obama for going into churches and making a speach about his candidancy then he and his supporters holding out their hands for contributions. This is one reason he became known and gained supporters. Churches are not to endorse political candidates or financially support them yet that is exactly how many politician get started with support. And of course, he also had the South Chicago fixer, Tony Rezko at his side for 15 years.

Posted by: Grammie | May 7, 2008 5:16:08 PM

Ruffhouse: The $400k is peanuts. The Clintons made $109 in 7 years after presidency. Most of that is due to his presidency. IF she wins, he can charge huge fees for lobbying to foreign governments, like CAFTA for columbia. Then after she's out of office, they can write books and go on speaking tours. BIG BIG BUCKS!

Posted by: X marks the spot | May 7, 2008 5:08:14 PM

To me the interesting part is Wolfson's statement that Bill and Hillary share their assets - meaning that the $800k he earned from the Colombian government to lobby for their trade agreement also went to her, a sitting US Senator who would vote on that trade agreement. That's an outrageous conflict of interest, and were she to vote on such a trade agreement it could be treasonous conduct. She should have separated her funds from Bill's for as long as she's in office and she sould abstain from voting - or even conferencing - on any matters where her husband has been employed as a lobbyist, and even on any matters involving persons from whom his foundation accepts a donation. One wonders whether she and he share funds donated to his foundation. She told Stephanopulos that they would not release the donor list. Why doesn't some journalist jump on this?

Posted by: Ivee | May 7, 2008 4:54:07 PM

When Hillary says she is loaning her campaign that money, if she loses do they have to pay her back? It's a bit confusing because first she says she's loaning her campaign, then she says she's giving herself a loan.

Anyway, why would someone spend so much of their own money to become President? Yeah, it's a great honor and responsibility but something is strange here. I get the feeling since she had a taste of it, she wants it so badly again. What, the power, status? I just don't get it. She says she's a fighter, but I question what she is fighting so hard for....meaning, does she have a hidden agenda? Is it that she is willing so hard to fight for us or fight to get what she wants? I don't know....seems like a big power trip to me, and maybe some kind of kickbacks. Can't see spending all those millions for a $400K position.

Posted by: Ruffhouse | May 7, 2008 4:46:10 PM

She looks on this as an investment, with a higher-than-market rate of return. Don't forget the kickbacks, book deals, etc. that politicians receive. She and Bill are now worth $100 million. Most of us, if we could afford to, would lend ourselves $11 million if we thought we could realize a 1000% return on our investment.

Way to go Hillary!

Hillary won consecutively Ohio, Texas, Pennsylvannia and now Indiana. Hillary also cut Obama's lead in North Carolina from 20% in February down to 14% in spite of ad overspending by Obama.

Wake up superdelegates!

Obama's top ten lists should be:
1. Wright told America I'm just a Politician. Oops...that is true.
2. I'm so eloquent...oops my writer wrote it.
3. This is my economic plan...oops I forgot to ask my advisers first and I'm waiting for Hillary's lead. I don’t want to be a Flip Flop on issues again.
4. Let's stick to the actual issue..oops, Michelle and Caroline should say that at CNN..
5. Come on Hillary's defectors and join me...oops do you think you can fool me I will defect also after I win and resurrect my loyal friends Wright, Rezco, and Ayers
6. Bitter and clinging - oops those are not in my dictionary, oops I got it from Wright.
7. Yeah, Wright mocked the Americans and I will lie by saying what he said is offensive….remember I'm a politician.
8. I'm electable…oops Hillary won the big states and has more electoral college votes to date that are crucial in November. Anyway, I fooled the superdelegates including the traitors.
9. Oops....I forgot what to say...where are my advisers.
10. Vote for Hillary...oops vote for me.

Before you can have CHANGE, we first need SOLUTIONS and that is HILLARY.
Michelle even brought Caroline with her. You can not fool us anymore. You are just all Politicians. Obama, Wright, Rezco and Ayers are all a disgrace to all American. After bitter remarks by Obama and Wrights mocking the American, then let's just forget about it. Yeah right. If this happened with Hillary for sure you are all jumping for joy. You can not fool us anymore and stop the lies...lies...lies...

Shame on those superdelegates that support Obama. They only think of their personal interest. If Obama wins, it will only be a repeat of Bush administration (a trainee who doesn't know what to do until he asks his advisers first). Wake up superdelegates!

Hillary won the big states and has more electoral college votes to date than Obama that are crucial in November. Wake up superdelegates.

She has the nerve to call Obama an elitist. $11 million, come on now.

Posted by: dia | May 7, 2008 3:29:45 PM

So Hillary lent her campasign over $11,000,000.00. What interest rate is she being paid, if any, for the money so-lent. If interest is being paid, then the taxpayers are funding her personal income. Poor Hillary, I hope she's noty down to her last few millions. Why doesn't her husband lend her any money?

Posted by: Almcxke | May 7, 2008 3:25:04 PM

I don't think Hillary came in respected. Her negative numbers were always great than 40%. I think she was feared. I think democrats fear she will do a General Sherman's scorched earth to the democratic party to win this thing (at least come out ahead).

Posted by: X marks the spot | May 7, 2008 3:18:11 PM

WHY, WHO, and WHERE is the money coming from to "repay the LOAN that SHE made", Hill/Bill keeps refering to. Is She replacing HER LOAN from contributions she keeps begging from voters?

Posted by: L1 | May 7, 2008 3:08:49 PM

It's simple, really. The Clintons want their power back. Hilary is pocketing every bit of voted leverage she can so that come convention time, she can negotiate for herself the Vice Presidency. A reasonable time after Inauguration, someone will mysteriously arrange for Obama to be assassinated. Hilary will become President.

Stranger things have happened...

Posted by: Visionary | May 7, 2008 2:49:13 PM

I agree with the other poster. "Turn off the lights, the party's over." Clinton has to win unrealistically in the remaining primaries to win. All Obama has to do is get 51% of the votes and split the superdelegates. Clinton has to win 85% of the delegates (with a split in the uncommitted superdelegates). Even if she got 72% of the available superdelegates and won every remaining primary as close as she did in Indiana, she can't win. Being out of money, out of momentum and running out of time, she should do what's right for her party, quit now and throw her support to Obama. The Iron Lady is rusted and it's time she ended her bid before that rust spreads to the rest of the party.

Posted by: Fatesrider | May 7, 2008 2:28:47 PM

Bravo! at least Sen Clinton put her money where her mouth was.
She is doing this because she really believes that she can win, thats the fighter in Hillary. Her supporters should donate more to her campaign so that she can continue the valiant fight. After all she did promise 30$ for the gas tax rebate and Guam statehood, regardless of the economic situation.and the loss of construction jobs and Highway safety. Sen Clinton will end her candidacy very soon, because the math is the math! Delegates and finances alike. If she wants to continue to fight, maybe she should join the Marines, being that she already had experienc with Sniper Fire.
Hopefully she goes gracefully, why are the candidates always the last to know, when it's over?

The fat lady is backstage and warming up

Posted by: wave06 | May 7, 2008 2:22:40 PM

Hillary has just got to do more. A summer Gas Tax Holiday is not enough, the people in North Carolina saw right through it. She needs to offer free gasoline and a free car to put it in. That should get her some votes. Of course she should cross her fingers behind her back when she says this.

Posted by: Johny | May 7, 2008 2:12:11 PM

Namako OH3 you've got a good point. Clinton came into this race fairly well respected. Now the people of New York must be wondering if they want this immoral, lying and corrupt person to represent them as a Senator.

Posted by: Johny | May 7, 2008 2:05:31 PM

I am certainly becoming more aggravated at the news media in general. They keep trying to beat Hillary Clinton's campaign down and completely ignore all the dirt around Obama and Rezko. The trial is still going on but many of Rezko pals have pleaded guilty and have testified against him. Even some reporters have been threatened for revealing factual truths about the Rezko/Obama connection. The mansion deal was a pay-off by Rezko to Obama for favors done. What favors? Obama was at Rekzo side the whole time and knew everything that was going on including 20 trips by Rezko back to Muslim countries and terrorist ties.
If Obama moves into the White House, America is down the drain.

What's the number these days for folks opposing Iraq? 70%? 80%?

and you really think John McCain, the biggest Iraq War fan since Bush himself, has a chance in November against either Dem?

And that doesn't even take into account how unpopular the rest of his policies are. He's got no support, no credibility, and no money. He's dead before the race even begins.

Posted by: fontapa | May 7, 2008 1:16:50 PM

Posted by: KJ | May 7, 2008 1:09:07 PM

I've been frequently reminded of the great Don Meredith, a color sportscaster on Monday Night Football opposite the late Howard Cosell, breaking into song early in the 4th quarter... "Turn out the lights... the party's over." Hillary, turn out the lights, your political career in Washington is over at the end of your current term in the Senate - the majority of educated New Yorkers can't be that stupid, now that you've exposed your greed for power at any expense on the national stage.

Posted by: Namako OH3 | May 7, 2008 1:00:01 PM

Let's look back before we look ahead. Hillary's campaign strategy and mechanics did not serve her candidacy as well as possible. From Penn to the internet the campaign was not savvy. In the end the primary activists will have their Obama candidacy and the Democrats will lose the presidential general election. Sensible Democrats who recognize Obama will lose should focus their efforts on electing Democrats to Congress. Thankfully we will still have three branches of government. We will need a strong Democratic majority in Congress that exercises it's constitutional role. Our government's system of checks and balances will be needed more than ever.

Posted by: j. | May 7, 2008 12:57:13 PM

Why does Hillary keep talking about "loans"? Who does she think will pay her back for irresponsibly remaining in this race? Here, America, is the kind of fiscal discipline this woman would exercise if elected.

Obama's campaign should not assume Hillary's debts! She should have dropped out already and everyone knows it. If she wants to stay in, she should do it at her own expense, not with the dollars of Obama supporters!

More things to watch:

Both prosecution and defense have rested in the Rezko trial. Note, Rezko presented no witnesses for the defense, instead resting on "presentation of the defense through cross-examination of prosecution witnesses."

I expect guilty verdicts in this case to most of the charges.

Thereafter there will be what is termed a pre-sentence investigation report. The sentencing range usually is point based and Rezjo can get reduction in points for substantial cooperation. Of course, the points will be "more substantial" for delivering the goods on significant political figures. There is great incentive for Rezko to deliver on this. I think the fact that he presented no defense essentially supports the defense strategy to seek mitigation of the sentence. Even after actual sentencing there is another opportunity procedurally for substantial cooperation. So, the decsion on that could come much later.

Just my musings and could be Obama has nothing at all to worry about, but . . .

1masterstroke,

Interesting abut McGovern. However, I feel that he changed sides about a month ago. Recall how he was dwelling on how bloodied he was after the primaries and no one (Obama) could win after that. I think it is interesting but honestly feel that he changed to Obama a while back.

Don't worry about these candidates of ours going broke. All they have to do these days is fire off a ghost written book and the money rolls in like the sea. I'm gonna bet that Hillary is making notes as we speak, for one about her campaign this year.

This news just came in on my RSS feed 20 minutes ago. Former Senator George McGovern who had declared for Clinton many months ago, just announced his switch and renewed support to Senator Obama. In his speech a few minutes ago McGovern stated, "He (Senator Obama), has won the nomination by any practical test." "It's time to unite the Democratic party." Watch the super delegates begin to declare, or switch, behind this announcement today.

Hillary loans her campaign fund 6.4 million. Don't worry she will get the little suckers that don't know better to donate into the fund and pay herself back. The other creditors will just be out of luck.

The Clintons have continually complained that Obama was given a free ride. But the issue of the Clintons and their personal finances is where a real free ride has been given. It is an issue what Bill has been up to to earn this money. Also, she can go on loaning herself money since she probably will demand the Obama campaign pay off her debt as part of any deal to get out. That's the Clintons for you. Make the mess and let others clean it up. No class these people

Hillary LOST BOTH states!!!. The 22000 margin she got in Indiana is far less than votes she got from cross-over republicans intended to prolong the fight.

BTW, too bad that Obama does not want to engage in a negative campaign. He could have shown the Hillary Bosnia lie footage over and ever again as she did to him on his “bitter” comments. If he did, she would be crushed a long time ago.

1master....Hillary still owes Connecticut from a Feb fundraiser...I don't think we'll see it.

Posted by: thetruth | May 7, 2008 11:24:00 AM

willow...I ran for state office. If I had more than $100.00( which I didn't) I would need to role to the state party. The rest I took( under $100.00)but the debt, if any was also mine. It may be different in the Gov race.

True...you are REALLY to be pitied. If Hillary had won I would have been REALLY disappointed, but I would NEVER vote for McCain...Are you crazy!!! You would not only be hurting your state but the country...just keep saying 4 more years...

I wonder just how many vendors are still waiting for Clinton to pay them. Maybe they could file a lien against Bill's next speech, that is, if anyone will have him after this despicable campaign. In response to poster George: It's obvious many of the Limbaugh and Hannity voter fraud advocates turned out to vote for Hillary, but there are many of us former Republicans solidly supporting Senator Obama. McCain's not the one.

The American media have reaped their evil seed they planted. the constant bashing of Hillary for almost 16 months now. We Hillary supporters are not blind and we are saying it today that , we are here to bring the American media to shame too. WE will vote McCain and in real large numbers the havoc has been done already by the American media and we will take this on to the very end . Whatever the useless American media says or the fear they will put try to put in our minds that we are voting for Bush or for war, we are not concerned. We will desperately vote against Obama and in large numbers. The DNC is a forgotten party already although the party is already in factions and we will make sure that the DNC never recovers from this for the next twenty years to come

Its my understanding that when a candidate loses/drops out, etc. all campaign funds then go to whomever he/she endorses for the job. So Hillary would have to endorse Obama and give all of her campaign funds to him. Oh Lordy, no wonder she wants to be broke when it ends. That's why they watch campaign funds so closely, because they have to ensure that campaign funds are sent to the proper place. Am I right? I'm not too sure, but it seems that I've heard this somewhere a few times.

I support your message of comfort to your fellow Hillary supporters,Cindy in NC.
But i have a question for you,if Obama proves you wrong,if he does a good job, delivering the economy, uniting people of different backgrounds and winning back America's lost international leading superpower image, would you come back here to re-write,confess your sins and commend him?
