Hillary, Nutcrackers & Sexism
May 30, 2008 11:52 AM
ABC News' Claire Shipman took a look at sexism and the campaign of Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, this morning on GMA.
Claire also made mention of the Women's Media Center and its video "Sexism May Sell, But I'm Not Buying It!" which you can watch HERE.
For a counterpoint, check out Peggy Noonan's "Sex and the Sissy," where she writes, "If Golda Meir, a woman of not only proclaimed but actual toughness, heard about Golda nutcrackers, she would have bought them by the case and given them away as party favors."
For the record, the other day on Fox News Channel Clinton campaign chairman Terry McAuliffe said he owned a Hillary Nutcracker. Is that sexist?

"Yes, if she runs as an independent she'll get elected."
In what universe will this woman be president? ROFLMFAO! Newsflash: SHE IS FINISHED IN POLITICAL LIFE.
Posted by: Tammi | May 31, 2008 3:47:29 PM
I have seen very little about her comments that she was thinking if not chosen she'll run as an independent. This is the worse group of candidates I have ever seen we would be better off with Ron Paul or Nader than any of the three. Obama shows us more every day that he is not qualified; if elected he'll blame all of his failures on whites. McCain will have us in Iran and Clinton the lesser of three evils. At she'll understand we cannot afford to leave Iraqi, we should never have been there but with a Saddam Hussein at the helm Iran or Al-Qaeda will have access to the oil. Yes, if she runs as an independent she'll get elected.

Peggy Noonan is an idiot.

This sophomoric name calling and bickering is sad. Given the state that George Bush will have left this country in, I hope that Democrats will rise above the petty crap that I see here and come together to elect a Democratic president in November.
When I was a kid, my Grandmother used to call this kind of stuff "cutting off your nose to spite your face." Want four more years of death and mayhem in the Middle East? Leave the party and vote for McCain. Don't care that 47 million Americans are without health care? Vote straight Republican! Delighted that lobbyists are running the country while the middle class disappears, donate to the GOP! Not concerned that one of our "moderate" Supreme Court Justices is 88 years old and will be replaced by the next President? Volunteer to go door-to-door for McCain.
We all need to get over it and get on with it. The future of the country's at stake with this one. I don't think that future needs to be decided based on Obama's pastor or Hillary nutcrackers.

questioner,
Please back up your argument with fact by listing how Obama has "dug a crack in the racial vista of our country so deep..." You went on to talk about angry coworkers, but nothing else.
thanks.

@la: "And you describe this man as 'a horror' lol then you all wonder why people tell you how transparent that is.
You actually imply that he has done nothing to be where he is? But a first lady is somehow more qualified."
Let's take that apart and see if we can untangle the spin.
1. I didn't say 'he' is a horror. He is a likable guy even if arrogant and aloof. I said 'the horror' because his associates and their positions plus the pile on from the Middle East put Pelosi and her Pranksters on a day-glo bus to hell. They can't lead. The electorate will tire very fast and the downticket races will reflect that. IOW, woody weeding time for the DNC.
2. He hasn't earned this nomination. On that I agree. Pelosi's Amazing Money Machine bought his delegates and his ability to outspend 4 to 1. Nothing in his legislative achievement says he can. Then there are those pictures of Hillary Clinton in the green zone with John McCain among thousands of others showing she goes where the crosses grow and comes back with the facts. Say what you will about Bosnia, she was there.
What I am saying is 'THIS' first lady is far more qualified, and THIS Senator is the strongest candidate. That the Pelosi cabal in the DNC chose to use all their resources to destroy her says clearly we need to push them out of power and that they feared her as an executive more than they wanted Obama. I can and have speculated as to why that is so but history will tell.

We in Europe cannot believe what is happening in the US.It is a horrible campaign, Obama is withstanding the racial and is never losing his "cool".He is truly "President material.
We believe people are actually voting for Bill Clinton, the """Fixer" as they see him.
Times have changed since his Presidency, And I am afraid this time,He wii also cook with water. It gives us here the impression the Clintons insist on becoming a second Kennedy family. aw

Obama has dug a crack in the racial vista of our country so deep, it emanates a political stink and generates a sense of outrage in many citizens.
I work with people of most colors (not green) and many ethnicities and this topic has popped up often in our conversations.
Many of them were pro-BO to begin with but have for the most part trickled down to a pitiful few.... not only because of his sexist attitude and countless verbal gaffes.... but mainly because of his picking at the open wound of racism.. and scratching at it so that it never heals!
He is surly, intolerant of anyone who interrupts his train of thought, unable to express himself without the aid of a eleprompter; in this regard, infact,
B O is pretty much like George Bush!
I DO NOT THINK THAT the perpetrator of our current racial issues..... is the same person who can best heal us!
Which is why I will be voting for HILLARY!!!
Posted by: questioner | May 30, 2008 2:28:14 PM
@la: "this crap is more important???"
Yes. Where past performance is the most important predictor of future performance, yes.
No one owns those issues you are bringing up. Everyone has a plan. In the case of the Democrats, the plans are close in nature kind and objectives. Some are not achievable because they go too far too fast or cost too much. People know this. It is part of the campaign.
So in the end it comes down to who do you trust to do their very best. Character assessment is precisely how most make that decision. Hillary comes out ahead and that is why she is ahead in the popular vote and her lead is widening. The Democrats woke up out of the sleepwalk and paid attention to Obama too late because they didn't take him seriously and they already know her or think they do. The $40 million character assassination done by the Republicans had a lasting effect.
Now they are wide awake and seized with a horror of what seems unavoidable. They have not only set up the weaker candidate for nomination, but one who's associates guarantee a scandal a week for years to come. So we get four and the Republicans get another twelve and that is the BEST we can do.
It didn't have to be this way. Maybe we learned something but history indicates learning is lost one generation after it is found.

People who vote for McCain are nuts!
Has anyone read his health care policy?
It basically takes the burden off of business to supply insurance and forces people to fend for themselves. There's no power of group purchasing using that method.
The tax break he proposes will not begin to cover the cost differential for a family of four.
Do you think business is going to raise your pay as they recoup the savings?
(It's actually illegal to take away insurance and then raise an emplyee's pay to compensate, but that's a whole other issue.)
The cost of health care for the Average American will skyrocket under this plan.
Granted, if the Dems are smart, the Congress will never allow this to happen. But health care for those who really need it will never happen under McCain. He will have the power of the veto.

Posted by: Jo | May 30, 2008 1:32:10 PM
You think far left democrats were shocked when Kerry won in 2004?
Just wait and see the look of shock on their faces when Mccain wins in 2008.
Oh yes, and remember the big rally Obama had in Oregon? The one they say had 75,000 people? What the Obama-loving media forgot to mention is that a very popular Oregon based band (The Decemberists) played a free concert.
Most were there for that. Oh yes, the little things they media leaves out so you will get a different perspective is hilarious.
But we find out, baby. We find out!
Posted by: Jo | May 30, 2008 1:31:22 PM
Then what about wyoming and montana wich he will win we are makiong sure of that Iowa.. the list goes on
Posted by: Joe | May 30, 2008 1:31:00 PM
The DNC has sat back and abdicated control of the primary process to the misogynist press. These few mental midgets will shove Obama into the nomination. The sheep dressed as super delegates, afraid to stand up for what is right, will follow Nancy and Reid to the Obama “Hope Bandwagon”. When it crashes and everyone sobers up from the love fest, we will have four years of John McCain. That’s what happens when the stupid misogynist male press terrified by a smarter woman, takes control of what is supposed to be a Democratic process.
This is not about sexism. It is about misogyny. This national hatred of women has been unveiled for the whole world to see what men in power in the US think about powerful women.
If anyone thinks that this is just about Hillary, this one woman, you are in for a surprise. It's going to be baaaaad!

BIG FORK... Hillary....
Posted by: Joe | May 30, 2008 1:28:36 PM
New voter,
I'll answer that. Because most people found out these things AFTER he won most of these primaries.
A few like Oregon and North Carolina he won because Oregon is far left and NC has many many blacks.
But he would have never won Missouri or Iowa, etc. etc. if people had known.
Thanks for asking. Glad to inform you.

I think the do nothing plaster a botox smile Nancy Pelosi should just shut her big mouth up.She has been in the tank for Pasotorbama for months and claims to be neutral.Dem nomination will be decided by the popular vote not her math, wish she had used some of her skills to keep the economy going and keep gas prices down or achieve anything of note in the congress.

Joe,
You continue to amuse us. The draft scare was used by Kerry. They said there was a secret draft plan in the works that would be implemented in April 2005.
Uh, what happened to that? Oops, unfortuantely for you guys that scare tactic won't work again.
LOLOL. You can't make this stuff up.

The latest rounds of video of yet ANOTHER of Obama's supporters and one of his spiritual advisers. (Obama once flew him in to one of his events AND he earmarked 100,000 to his church)
Tap, tap, tap. That's the sound of another nail going into Obama's coffin. This guy is toast, just get out the butter and slap jelly on him.

Krissy K.: Don't be so sure about that "failsafe;" there is no way McCain will appoint pro-choice justices. And you really, REALLY need to look at his health care plan if you think he makes a nice substitute for Hillary Clinton. You like the last 8 years? Welcome to more of the same if you vote for this guy...

And sadly the abortion issue isn't a scare tactic he will apoint conesrvative judges that will over turn roe v wade then it won't be left to the states it will be banned.. Also I hope you like the draft because thats whats going to happen when mccain is pres. Hope you guys don't have 16 year old kids cuz the will be in Iran by then.

Joe, Joe, Joe, you think people will see this new video of Pfluger and only look at it through the lens of Hillary Clinton?
No, they will look at it at yet another example of how disgusting and sick this church is. All the talk of white supremacy and how whites OWE blacks everything is NOT going to go over well.
And no one wants to put a black man in office who will have a lot of power, who listened to this kind of crap day in and day out for 20 years.
It's basic. Not surprising you don't get it, since you're stupid enough to support Obama.
Posted by: Jo | May 30, 2008 1:15:50 PM

Well JO....politics are tough...and you need to be tough to survive. Obama did survive Chicago politcs to get into the Senate. That took a lot for a white/black man. Saying he isn't tough enough is contrary to you saying Chicago politics are tough...so goes the race. Remember, no one said he is in yet. We still have a convention and a few more primaries. Hillary may surprise us...
Posted by: newvoter | May 30, 2008 1:10:05 PM
Hi, my name is Barack Obama. I come from the dirtiest cesspool of politics called the Chicago Political Machine.
And I want to clean up Washington DC! I couldn't clean up my own backyard, because I played dirty to get elected, but I want to clean up everything now!
LOLOLOL. This guy is the biggest joke to ever come down the pike, and idiots are falling for it.

Posted by: Joe | May 30, 2008 1:08:35 PM
Obama's other mentor and spiritual guide and friend Father Pfluger is making the rounds today.
Obama cannot survive a Round Two of this.
Obama's team is hard at work scrubbing his endorsement and name off of their website, but we have video and it's too late.
The busiest people in the world lately have been the people who work on his blog. All that scubbing off names (Black Panters, Rev. Wright, Pfluger, etc.) is getting to be a full time job.
Like I said, when the conservative 527s get finished with Obama he couldn't win dogcatcher.

Posted by: Joe | May 30, 2008 1:06:23 PM
newvoter, that's politics?
Well, then why did Obama's team have a hissy fit when CNN contacted them saying they were going to air the segment?!
They KNOW it looks bad and so does everyone else.
By the way, it's called dirty politics and it's the Chicago way. So how is this man who learned politics the dirty way going to clean up Washington DC?
Answer: he's not.
Posted by: Jo | May 30, 2008 1:03:45 PM
I'll tell you what I see as sexist are all these women saying hillary or Mccain. Then they say it's because they don't trust obama.. We all know thats BS and you are trying to get your woman in in 2012 at wich point we will be in a world war, have scores of conservative judges outlawing abortion. A failed tax code at wich point Hillary wont get elected(again) because there are far better women fit to be president than her. And that will come to light here shortly.. Shes a lying self centered you know what!

The chicago senate stuff all you are talking about. That woman who Obama kept off the ballot was the one that encoraged him to campain. He told her if I'm in it im not going to quit. Then she decided to go up for reelection so he burried her..... BIG DEAL!! He plays by the rules! Don't hate the player hate the game!

Lois and other Hillary supporters. I am too, but PLEASE don't sit this one out as you're helping Obama that way. Give Sen. McCain every vote you can to keep BO AWAY FROM THE WHITE HOUSE. I have not given up on Hillary, but if forced to do so, I will work for McCain to elect him. Never Obama as POTUS.
Posted by: Debra | May 30, 2008 12:55:25 PM

"I spoke of sexism early on in my comment piece but
no one believed me."
Lois Mardis | May 30, 2008 12:50:56 PM
The thought process appears to be thus:
1) This is the year that Hillary was going to surmount the sexism in American politics and win the Presidency for all those 90 year old women who remember when they couldn't vote, and for all the frustrated boomer grandma aged females who are pissed off that their daughters don't "get it" and are voting for Obama anyway. They had this one in the bag. Hillary was inevitable.
2) Didn't happen.
3) Ergo: Sexism won.
4) All that remains is to discover and document the proof of #3).
End of discussion.
I still don't believe you. I find this allegation to be ridiculous on its face. I figure that one of the main demographics in which one is likely to find real sexism still rampant is among the "white, working class, Joe SixPack type" voter, the guys with high school diplomas makin’ less than $50K a year.
Guess who's been winning that demographic?
This is not to say that some sexist remarks haven't made their appearance during the campaign, but Hillary's demise is most certainly NOT the result of "sexism". Ya'll stoking the wrong grievance here.
Posted by: Lee C. ― U.S.A. | May 30, 2008 12:55:02 PM
Ok heres the thing.... I think if Hillary won these nutcrackers wouldn't be an issue. Hell she'd probably be handing them out. There is two ways to take them one way is to say that they are sexist and hurt her. The other way is to say they are sexist and prove that she is one tough cookie. You know crackin the nuts of a male domminated establishment. I personaly thought it was funny.
Posted by: Joe | May 30, 2008 12:54:57 PM
The media is starting to do it's job...sorta. Last night on CNN Anderson Cooper there was a segment on how Obama became a state senator. It was EXTREMELY enlightening!
There were two candidates that were running against him in the primary that he knew he couldn't beat. One was a long time social activist and popular woman named Alice Palmer (black) who was the incumbent. Obama took in a team of lawyers and went through her list of names on her petition and if they had any errors (like cursive instead of printing their name) he had it thrown out! He ended up getting enough signatures thrown out to get her off the ballot!
THAT is how he won. By eliminating the competition through his team of lawyers.
Guess who the black social Chicago activist Alice Palmer is supporting? Hillary Clinton!
Puts a whole new face on the man who is Barack Obama, and it's an ugly one.
Posted by: Jo | May 30, 2008 12:54:39 PM
It was the right wing blogs that had the most issues with Hillary Nutcrackers when they came out.
The Golda comment is dead on. If Hillary had won, she'd be handing the things out at christmas.
Posted by: The Commander Guy | May 30, 2008 12:52:16 PM
I spoke of sexism early on in my comment piece but no one believed me. It has backfired and will be an issue in this upcoming election. If a black man or woman wasn't running for president, none of the back and forth on race and sexism would exist. Race and sexism will divide the Democratic Party this November. I don't see it bringing the party together to win. It is a historic primary with only one winner. And who ever wins will lose the other half of the electorate. The writing is on the wall. I'm a Hillary supporter and I will be sitting this one out. I thought I would never say or do such a thing but Obama is untrustworthy and there are signs he will not be a good president.

By making a race and gender issue of the ongoing process she has solidified her hold on her own half of the Democratic Party support, thereby ensuring that, in the end, she still wins significantly even if she loses the nomination. Of course, she knows she has lost sight of even the second place on the ticket, but she also knows that she does not need to keep an obvious eye on what she really wants while making a play for it; and, as long as she is able to keep going, she is hoping to force somebody's hand into giving her that place on the ticket...if not directly on the ticket, then somewhere power proximal. The induced reactionary temperament of her support ensures that she can keep going as long as she wants.

Why would Hillary bother mocking B O about his poor debating skills?
I have never heard that she did, please "cite" when that was supposed to have occurred!
B O on the other hand has publicly snubbed Hillary at the State of the Union convocation and has "dusted her off" the bottom of his shoe.
Was that not derogatory enough of him?
No! So he goes out and grabs another one of his wierd religionists to join his paid posters in perturbing the ever-growing anti-B O population.....
Obama's association with unsavory characters is not only allegedly "boneheaded"... but also fundamentally questionable for someone running for the highest office in the country.

Hillary owes much of her success to the fact that she is female and women voters endorsed her candidacy. Now that she is losing momentum she is calling foul due to sexism. She can't have it both ways. She needs to step down with grace instead of whining that things are not fair after she gets behind.

Did GMA analyze how often the Clinton camp overtly played the gender card themselves and asked for people to vote for her because she's a woman?
Or analyze how often the Clinton camp overtly challenged Obama's manhood?
She has run a VERY sexist campaign, and has gotten a free ride from the media on this for quite a while. Meanwhile Obama hopes to hang onto her supporters, as she seeks to alienate them from him so she can run as the 'I Told You So" candidate in 2012.

Why are women their own worst enemies? Every time a woman reaches a new pinnacle of achievement, other women are often foremost in tearing that person down? Is it jealousy or do they think that by joining in with the misogyny they'll become part of the club? Peggy Noonan calls Hillary insulting, manipulative, prissy, sissy and (most telling) "not butch enough". Well everybody has an opinion but I'll ask you this. The whole world knows the name Hillary Clinton, d*mn few know Peggy Noonan.

To answer your final question, Jake, permit me to ask another couple of questions: Does Mr. McAuliffe own a Barck Obama "Forget-'Em-All Doll" (tm): you pull its string and it disavows all knowledge of prior embarrassing associations with longstanding "friends?" Does he own a John McCain "GI John" (tm) doll which promises to stay in Iraq for the next ten years or until Armageddon, whichever comes first?
