Ickes Elaborates on Clinton's Plan to Move the Finish Line
May 06, 2008 9:10 PM
This actually could ultimately prove to be the most important development of the day.
At the Indianapolis Motor Speedway today Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, not only continued her aggressive outreach to white working class voters -- she indicated she wanted to move the finish line of her race.
Right now Democratic Party rules state that the candidate who first secures 2,025 delegates will be the nominee.
But hold the phone -- today Clinton said that number is actually 2,209.
She's counting Michigan and Florida -- states that held contests contrary to Democratic National Committee rules and were penalized as a result.
She's counting Michigan -- where Obama was not on the ballot. He removed his name, as did every other credible * Democrat except for Clinton.
Senior Clinton adviser Harold Ickes elaborates on this "new math" to Politico's Mike Allen.
By counting Michigan and Florida, Clinton when the primaries are over on June 3 will still be behind, Ickes said.
But she will be “substantially less than 100 delegates behind” Obama.
“We don’t believe that this party is going to go forward into a presidential race without seating both Florida and Michigan,” Ickes said.
“The Obama people keep talking about 2,025, which implies they don’t intend to seat Florida and Michigan,” Ickes said. “We think that’s a mistake on the part of the party – it’s foolish.”
You know what's funny?
There's a guy named Harold Ickes who was on the DNC's Rules and Bylaws Committee who voted last year to strip Michigan and Florida of their delegates for violating the rules.
I mean what are the odds?

People who say "ignorant young people" are voting for Obama are wrong. People with college degrees are voting for Obama. Guess why.

I read Obama supporters defend him from his relationship with Rev.Wright.
The reason is economic issue is more important.
I don't even know what and how he will make our economy better.

obamazied,
MY not supporting obama, is not because of the preacher wright, that is about midway of the list. top of the list is I have listened to him and looked at his plans and I do not think he will make a good. president.
I have attended a black baptist southern church all my life and I have never heard any preacher preach what wright does.
but as I said, rev. wright is not the reason i am not supporting him
I do think he lied to us about hearing the sermons. and i do not believe him when he say he has denounced him. i do think it was for political reasons.
therefore making him like any other old politician.
i did and do not know obama-from the political people he has associated with in the past and from his marxist mom. and his dad politics-i think obama is to far to the left for our country.

DanielforHillary, I am mature and consider myself wise and I voted for Obama. Can you please tell me why you would vote for McCain. Have you considered the war, the economy, the supreme court. There are vast differences on these issues between the dems and republicans. With that in mind how can you vote for McCain.
Posted by: lisa | May 6, 2008 11:02:26 PM
jgaw, I checked Wikipedia and you just have the ability to write-in your choice of President. Except you're really votig for electors, so it would take a massive vote for a write-in to somehow get electors to vote for that person at the convention.
All in all, many like me will bail. Let the ones who care about who's on the ballot vote.
As I read these posts, and I have read many these past few weeks and months, I regret that this has racial overtones. I would have preferred it be Ayers or Rezko on the ballot so it had nothing to with race, just anti-American and corruption as Obama and his associates have. Maybe a crazy minister like Hagee or Robertson or any of those others who are just as bad as Wright.
So picture the radical Ayers when I say I'm bailing on the Democrats. Has nothing to do with race, I could care less. Has to do with Obama and Wright and Ayers and Rezko and Auchi.
If you think most Americans will overlook the radicalism of that bunch, you're in for another McGovern '72 treat with Obama. One state won.
And McGovern was a war hero.

I will not say obama is stupid.
but he is underqualfied.
I would have voted for him-if he had proved to be half as smart as sen. clinton. but he has not. I do not think even obama believed that second speech he made about rev. wright.
I believe more will come out in the ge about him. because the msm has been so in the tank for him. they failed us.
and the fact will remain-between obama and mccain-which ever one of them that gets into office-we still will not have the best in there to lead us.
so we will muddle and fuddle through another four years, while this country goes further in decline.

Al, apparently you are quite ignorant. The reason some democrats will vote republican is because maybe the republican has more expierience and knows his stuff. Unlike a certain democrat who talks big talk but can't do anything in reality. John McCain is better than Obama.

jgaw:
Your comment is ironic that your biggest argument against Obama is against your main point in the argument: that we need to focus on the economics. You'll notice that nowhere does Obama tout his link to Wright's church. Sitting in the church for 20 years, no matter how heinous, does not constitute a bad economic policy.
If you want to talk economics, think about how Hillary is supporting cutting the gas tax, and how hundreds of economists, even Nobel prize winners, are against the plan. Don't bring the irrelevant topic of Obama's church into the discussion.

I cannot speak for the Michigan race, but here in FL, our votes and our delegates should be seated. None of the candidates campaigned here, but there was record turnout for both parties (FL is a closed-primary state). The voters of FL made the clear choice for Hillary. Given the important property tax issue that was on the same ballot in FL, no one can say that there was not a true outcome to the Democratic race.
Regardless of how the DNC set up the system, they were aware of the potential problems from the start. They knew that there were Floridians who were ready to challenge the DNC in court.
Hillary will far better represent the Democratic party.

The reason Hillary Clinton will not drop out is because since the race is quite close, she wants everyone t weigh in their vote so the results will be more factual. Her democracy is what we need in a president. She is not selfish, quite the contrary, she cares for the country. If Obama wins the nomination, the party won't unite behind him. He is such a stuck up brat who thinks he knows everything. John McCain will have him against the wall. If Obama can't really and powerfully"tell Hillary Off in a debate" why do many people continue to believe that Obama will be better against John McCain. Honestly I believe its just racial loyalty and the ignorance of the younger voters that is helping Obama win. Well, the more mature and wise Clinton supporters will vote for John McCain, the 2nd best candidate. Now thats sad when a republican is considered better than a democrat. Obama is so stupid!

Anyone and I mean anyone who is a REAL Democrat whose candidate loses and then say they are going to vote republican_NEVER were democrats in the first place. Who needs traitors. You won't be seeing republicans vote democratic come November. That is because they are loyal and loyalty is what this is all about. Someone has to win every horse race and Hillary is just lucky she is not like the philly who lost more than a horse race....OBAMA and all Democrats in 2008

Susan, your argument simply does not make sense.
What is it that makes you think you know what is under Hillary's skin, but not what is under Obama's skin? How about what is under McCain's skin? Is that better than what is under Obama's skin?
Just because you vote the way you do, does not mean you can apply it to pro-Hillary voters in general. A better reason to support Hillary would be "because of her health plan", not "because I am afraid of what's under Obama's skin". Doing so would be complete ignorance and a disgrace to other pro-Hillary voters who support Democratic policies, and not just what's underneath someone's skin.

Eric | May 6, 2008 10:37:55 PM asked:
"Is she that selfish that she'd sacrifice the Democratic party's chances in November rather than drop out in a distinguished manner?"
YES, SHE IS!!!!

earl, have we forgotten ALREADY, obama has sat in a black seperatist church for 20 years, and has had the nerve to tell us he has heard nothing of what we have heard from rev. wright.
the things that are said at the state fo the black union meetings-have been mush-compared to that stuff he has gone to church and listened to.
the state of the black union is televised every year for all to see.
and as I have said-the clinton' have a long list of trying to level the playing field for black and others.
where has obama been.
I will also say, the group that he has aligned himself with the exteme left of the dem. party-has never really tried to empower black people. what our people need right now more than anything is economic power. and just putting a black man in the white house will not get it. sen. clinton has the plan to help level the playing field.

Oh Yes, we will vote for McCain or write Hillary's name in for POTUS. No way is Obama going to get our vote. For most of us, our vote for McCain or writing in Hillary's name will be the last thing we will do as Democrats. We will then leave the Democrat Party. On November 6th, Obama, Michelle, Dean and Pelosi will be left standing and dazed, holding empty kool-aid glasses in salute to the new President of the United States, President John MacCain.

Sorry Tapper, but for you to say that: "She's counting Michigan, where Obama was not on the ballot. He removed his name, as did every other Democrat except for Clinton" is not true, Democrates Kucinich, Dodd and Gravel were on that ballot. There was also a space of those who did not prefer any of those candidates. You can check this website for that fact.

I'm an independent who has for the most part always voted Republican (yeah, I know, I really blew it last time!). I want to vote for Obama because I want a change in Washington--any change! HRC is Bill's wife and nothing more. She talks a lot and bobs her head a lot, but most of all she lies a lot, and I won't vote for her. If she is your candidate, I (a 60 year old white female)will vote Republican again since she isn't that much different than McCain (who I also don't like.)Either that, or I, like many young people and blacks, I will just stay home. Obama is bringing out the voters--not HRC or McCain. She will not beat McCain, but Obama can.

Earl I find if my posts are too long people don't read them. lol I hope Hillary supporters will realize that we can't afford to have another republican in the white house. I just don't understand what they are thinking. And we haven't even touched on the Supreme Court. They have taken this very personally. I voted for Obama but will vote for Hillary just to get us back in the white house. Hopefully they will rethink who they vote for. We can't afford another 4 years with McCain.
