McClellan On Bush's Version of the Truth: From Cocaine Rumors to Destructive Partisan Warfare

May 28, 2008 8:34 AM

Scott McClellan's new memoir on his White House days is harsh.

The decision to invade Iraq "goes to an important question that critics have raised about the president: Is Bush intellectually incurious or, as some assert, actually stupid?" the former White House press secretary writes. "Bush is plenty smart enough to be president. But as I've noted his leadership style is based more on instinct than deep intellectual debate."

In 1999, at a hotel suite "somewhere in the Midwest," McClellan recalls the Bush mind when dealing with rumors that the then-Texas governor had used cocaine.

Writes McClellan: "'The media won't let go of these ridiculous cocaine rumors,' I heard Bush say. 'You know, the truth is I honestly don't remember whether I tried it or not. We had some pretty wild parties back in the day, and I just don't remember.'

"I remember thinking to myself, How can that be? How can someone simply not remember whether or not they used an illegal substance like cocaine? It didn't make a lot of sense."

And yet, McClellan concludes, "I think he meant what he said in that conversation about cocaine. It's the first time when I felt I was witnessing Bush convincing himself to believe something that probably was not true, and that, deep down, he knew was not true. And his reason for doing so is fairly obvious — political convenience…"

Bush "has a way of falling back on the hazy memory to protect himself from potential political embarrassment. In other words, being evasive is not the same as lying in Bush's mind...It would not be the last time Bush mishandled potential controversy. But the cases to come would involve the public trust, and the failure to deal with them early, directly and head-on would lead to far greater suspicion and far more destructive partisan warfare."

Scott is, or was in serious denial. Bush has always been a liar, about every aspect of his life. If it weren't for his name and parents, he'd be sitting on a curb in Austin, Texas with a brown papper bag between his legs.
This "W" has been a loser all his life.
He's not a TEXAN, but likes to pay one!

no draft?
have you not heard of the "stop-loss" program?
that my friends is a back-door draft.

Geevil,

"enough with the anti-war crap. there is no draft."

Look up H.R. 393. I doubt it will go anywhere, it got crushed in 2003. What worries me is that it is sponored and cosponsored by Democrats.

Everyone here is playing the lying blame game. They all lie, but so far Barack's "gaffes" haven't killed 4,000 American soldiers.

Susan Graves - I had Bush figured out in 2000 too. I went to high school with rich kids like him. Never had to answer for anything, and daddy's connections always kept them out of trouble. I was in the Marines at the time and it was popular to root for Bush. I knew he had a grudge with Saddam. I knew he would go back. Nearly every white male I encountered throughout the 90s complained that Clinton didn't. People in the military supported Bush because he would give them a raise. My response then was "What good is a raise gonna do if you're dead?" .........and sure enough, 7 years later we have THIS.

With the enormous amount of evidence that Bush and his administration lied to the American People, for over 7 years and ended costing us thousands of American lives, trillion of dollars, and depressing our economy and our respect around the world, how on earth can anyone defend him or his policies. But, that is exactly what McCain is doing. Obama is not perfect, he like the Clintons have made mistakes, but you can't say that he has caused the needless death of thousands of Americans. Bush holds that batton, which he want to hand off to McCain. Wake up people!!!

"Obama has already told more lies than Bush could ever dream of."

I'm sorta speechless over this comment...

I mean, even Bush supporters couldn't think this is true, could they?

McClellan at least had the integrity to come forth and admit what most Americans already knew about Bush & his GOP. I'm not surprised at all to hear about this Bush, Cheney , Rove & GOP corruption that has screwed over this nation for the last 7 years. Also...it will come as no surprise that the White House’s only response to the book will be to take cheap shots that accuse McClellan of being disgruntled or disingenuous. Since they have no moral compass or integrity to stand on...and since the record of Republican corruption and treachery against the USA these last 7 years speaks for itself...they really do not have a leg to stand on in their defense against the content in McClellan's book. If Dana Perino and others loyal only to the Bush Crime Family & the Republican Party had any sense, they would simply keep their mouths shut and quit accusing McClellan of being a disgruntled person. The more you complain about McClellan’s book, the more obvious you make your own sins against the USA.

Jack

I love the way you focus in on the really pertinent facts. You should be a philosopher!

"being evasive is not the same as lying in Bush's mind..."

well, how "plenty smart" is that to be?

What it is is plenty entitled.

Some rich kids never have to grow up to be responsible for the consequences fo their actions, do they?
All McClellan was supposed to be is part of Bush's cleaning unit.
Now we get to see just what it is that he was really tossing into the trash.
I don't care whether he remembered snorting.
I care that he can't remember enough to give anyone a reason for why we are in Iraq today.
And I care that we are a country feckless enough to have let this happen.

How much more definitely capable of malfeasance can a president be?
What does he have to do, aim at live Iraqis on the White House lawn before we hold him accountable?

Oh, how brave they all become after they have finished their term of service - but where is that moral courage when they are in there aiding and abetting the super villains? All these ex-bushies, like Colin Powell, could have made a world of difference and ground the war machinery to a halt had they spoken up when it mattered - and millions of lives wouldn't have been destroyed. Better late than never, I guess. Heroism is dead. The republic is lost.

What a disgraceful presidency! As the regime crumbles, the once repressed insiders are coming out. What else can you say about Bush, but The Worst Ever, a Miserable Failure. Right up until November of 2006 and the whipping the GOP took, Bush was still saying everything was going fine in Iraq and that Rumsfeld and Cheney were doing a terrific job. It was the most obscene propaganda I have ever seen, for an unnecessary war that has left 4,000 Americans dead and run our country into the ground.

Maybe bush should check the arrest records, in 1972, of the Harris County Jail, Texas, when, as Governor of the State, he was taken there for cocaine possession. Instead of having formal charges filed against him, as most other Texans would have been, he avoided jail time through an informal diversion plan involving community service with Project P.U.L.L., an inner city Houston program for troubled youths at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center in that city's dirt-poor Third Ward. This "community service" was arranged by his father.

Later, in a clintonesque manner, Junior, in 1989, under persistent questioning, said that he had "not used cocaine in the previous seven years". He went further to deny that he had used cocaine "since 1974".

In fact, Bush has refused to answer the new FBI standard, about any drug used after the age of 18. He has refused to answer whether he could have passed the FBI test when his father was vice president during the eight years from 1981-1989.

...and, if William Degan were still alive, he could testify to his filming of Bush, at a Florida airport, with two kilos of coke in hand. However, Degan was sent to Ruby Ridge, by Bush Sr, where he was killed in the Randy Weaver shootout.

Does this jog anyone's thinking, besides that of Bush's former press secretary, McLellan...?

Posted by: Marc | May 28, 2008 10:55:41 AM

It's strange how McLellan exposes and defends Bush at the same time. I would say the book lends itself to some really convoluted reading.

Now, if only Fallon would write a book as well.

geevil - no he hasn't. You're nuts.

Posted by: Rondell | May 28, 2008 10:20:36 AM

really - is this book required? did anyone in the world believe iraq was necessary or that katrina could not be better handled..... i mean the world knows that bush is a just dumb - plain and simple..... the beauty of it is that he had two terms as president - WOW!

Posted by: Manu | May 28, 2008 10:16:30 AM

geeville, your phrase "lack of ethics and truthfullness and the willingness to lie and mislead the Public" yields no hits on a search. Does one need to listen to Limbaugh to pick this up?
