Mr. Voting Rights Says Florida & Michigan Should Not Count

May 07, 2008 10:32 PM

Former President Jimmy Carter told Jay Leno on "The Tonight Show" today that the Michigan and Florida Democratic primaries should not count since the two states "disqualified themselves" by holding early primaries contrary to Democratic Party rules.

Carter's stance will not help Sen. Hillary Clinton's push, which she described this evening at a D.C. fundraiser, saying "that this issue about the voters in Florida and Michigan is a civil rights issue."

Carter has monitored elections all over the world, and worked for election reform in the U.S.

But he has also hinted he's a supporter of Sen. Barack Obama's presidential campaign -- and he had frosty relations with Sen. Clinton's husband.

Carter also said if superdelegates deliver the nomination to a candidate other than the one with the most pledged delegates "it would be a catastrophe for the party."

My rights as an American citizen have been violated. Just like "taxation without representation"...I say ban those from the Democratic Party who greedily allowed the earlier voting. It is not fair to the rest of us who got out and voted...only to have our votes not count. Neither a Democrat or a Republican can fix our mess.

catleya writes, "My 88 years old neighbor also keeps asking me if Hillary still can win .I always says "Yes" to her. We just hope DNC will see the reality, "

Translation....You're willing to lie to YOURSELF and 88 year old women. That speaks VOLUMES.

citizen voter:

You're a tad confused.

There was ONE candidate who DID campaign in Florida. His infomercials clogged the airwaves for several weeks beforehand.

His name was Barack Obama!

You can be as testy as you want about Hillary.... but SHE played according the the terms and conditions specified for candidates!

As for Michigan, BO was not required to remove his name from the slate. His poor choice! Again, Hillary played by the terms and conditions required of all Democratic candidates.

The DNC is is seriously flawed. It considers itself higher than the Constitution which is legally the Law of the Land.

The media too is flawed, operating under such tacky standards that one has to go abroad to find out exactly what's happening state-side!..Since when does a by-line authorize a writer to editorialize a news story?

And blogs like this just add sparks to the fire because intelligent relatively open-minded posters add actual on-topic facts perhaps one in seven!

But I believe that Hillary should be the candidate of choice and hope that sooner than later more of you will join her supporters in supporting this strong brilliant woman in her campaign to bring us economic welfare and universal health care as our President!

Hello from Florida - this is a reminder to the Hillary throng that it is a republican state so clamoring to count the delegates is only more pandering.

The Republican governer's name is Charlie Crist and he presides over a republican dominated House.

It would be unfair to count the delegates from Florida since there was no campaigning and that puts all the benefits in Hillary's camp since she had wide name recognition as Bill Clinton's wife.

Counting Michigan delegates where John Edwards and Barack Obama were not even voting choices would just plain be CHEATING.

If the citizens of FL and MI voted to move the Primary's date, then I hate it for them if their vote does not count. If they didn't vote for that action to take place, then what are they to do but go vote on the day their primary is held? If the DNC wants to punish someone in those states for moving the dates, punish the party leaders in those states. Punishing the voters is nothing short of marginalizing and disenfranchising voters. Just because that happened in 2000 doesn't mean it should become the norm. Every person has the right to have their vote counted, period. Otherwise, we take yet another step towards fascism and this time, it wasn't made by Republicans.

Posted by: Snarfeh | May 8, 2008 9:06:35 PM

Mr. Music...you're right Obama wasn't on the ballot, but MI is holding primary August 5 and they should re-do the vote then. This has to be settled and Newt was saying this would be a perfect situation. FL counts as Obama ran ads there for 2 weeks on cable and still lost.

Posted by: Debra | May 8, 2008 5:32:56 PM

Get a clue, Mr. Music,

The Democrat voters in Florida and Michigan did nothing to have their votes invalidated by the DNC. All they did was vote.

As for Florida, the primary date was moved by the Republican leadership, not the Democrat voters.

In addition, three other states also violated primary rules as to schedule, Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina. And, yet, they were given a pass on their "rules" violations.

Even the DNC and other prominent Democrat leaders have admitted on national television that their "rules" are pathetic and will be changed for the next election.

Defending the sham taking place in the Democrat party is without merit.

Right on Jimmy Carter! Clinton talking about counting Florida & Michigan is insane! It's sore loser taken to it's ZENITH! Do you think she would care for even one second about Florida & Michigan if she were winning?! They broke the rules they don't get counted! Everyone agreed to this before it started. Obama was not even on the ballot in Michigan! I mean for God's sake. It's preposterous to say "oh yeah, let's just count those votes now."

Jimmy Carter, the man who embraces Hamas...

Why would anyone put any credence in a President whose administration was a failure?

The candidate endorsed by the Georgia one termer will undoubtedly suffer the same fate as the inexperience of Carter provided for the United States.

Bearing that in mind, a Ronald Reagan Repulbican is out there waiting to pounce on any liberal, left-wing candidate the Democrats decide to annoint.

I wonder who that could be?

Posted by: Jayhawk | May 8, 2008 4:15:36 PM

CARTER knows about Catastrophes, HE WAS ONE. Not a very good president, a very stubborn one. He could be a real dangerous decision maker, I was a worried dem when he was in office!

Posted by: HP Boston | May 8, 2008 2:15:50 PM

Well, Jimmy Carter, who use to be my favorite ex-president, has lost all credibility. What do you expect from someone who sides with a terrorist group against Israel? And yes, I know Hamas was supposedly "elected", so don't bother going there. They're still a terrorist organization that has vowed to wipe Israel off the map. Jimmy Carter is mentally incapable these days.

I'm finished with the Democratic Party if they let Mr. Hope steal this election. Finished!

For the Obamarhoids:

Hillary WAS NOT THE ONLY CANDIDATE ON THE MI. BALLOT. Dodd and Kucinich were also on the ballot! STOP LYING YOUR WAY THROUGH THIS ELECTION.

Posted by: Vickie | May 8, 2008 12:35:50 PM

It's so nice to be a Republican! That's what I've been for years and 90% of my 49 years, I've voted accordingly. The only reason I voted Democrat this primary was because of Hillary Clinton and her "can do" work ethic. To those who feel experience, character, judgement and patriotism aren't necessary....go vote Obama in Nov. The rest of us Clinton supporter will be going to McCain. I can't wait to work for him in my city. IT IS NOT RACIAL....HE COULD BE PURPLE WITH HIS 143 days in the Senate and I STILL would never vote him. I know MANY other Republicans in my area that voted Hillary, but we're just as fine going back to McCain....because it seems the media has already crowned Obama the nom.
I think she should finish this out tho....someone might untie and take the gag off Rev. Wright. I do like his book will be out in October, unless Obama mafia bind and gag him again.

Does anyone care what Jimmy Carter thinks about the Democratic nominating process in 2008?

Seat Florida and Michigan already—it won’t change the delegate or popular vote lead enjoyed by Obama—so why is Obama and his surrogate Carter opposing that?

Sounds so much like the old (really old) politics.

I can tell each of us that take the time out to partake in these blogs is very passionate about politics, the future of our country and the future of ourselves and kids - This PASSION can fuel negative or positive energy, depending on who you are....

I respect that passion whether you are democrat our Republican. Please take that same level of passion but use it positively for the greater good.

It is only human nature to chose our own ( birds of a feather flock together). But we are equally capable of rising above the norm or the status quo or the misrepresentations. Put the anger, the racisms aside and realize that ppl like Russ Limbaugh is using this to tear us apart even further..

Don't be biased and vote for Hillary because she is a woman or because you are blindly following the clinton dynasty. On the other hand don't just vote for Obama because he's black.

Democrats can only win if we UNITE!!! If you don't believe obama is more honest than clinton vote clinton or vise versa....... but don't come in here tearing each other apart. We should promise ourselves as democrats that we will support democrats, not be Disenchanted if we ( hillary or obama) come in first or second on the ticket. Just know in either case we will have a win. And don't think for a minute that they won't reunite when the dust is settled, they are smarter than that not to....

These votes have to count the constitution trumps the DNC rules.
This is what we are about the constitution the Dems cried about how Bush has broken the constitution yet, they are willing to the exact samething.
I do know one thing Howard Dean must go

Posted by: Melissa | May 8, 2008 9:46:07 AM

One thing that I've noticed in the comments here, and it seems to be a prevalent theme throughout the different blogs, is that the tone of the Hillary supporters is extremely belligerent. They've adopted a "Hillary or No One" attitude.

A number of you have stated that if your candidate, Senator Clinton or Senator Obama, doesn't win or if either one is not included on the party's ticket you're going Republican or you're going to stay home. This is like the kid who brings the ball to the "School Yard" and then demands to play and WIN otherwise he'll take the ball home and not let anyone else play. How "adult" of you.

Well, with that threat looming over our heads perhaps the rest of the primaries should be cancelled and have Senator Obama concede to Senator Clinton because YOU DEMAND that she be The Candidate. Once again, can you be anymore juvenile?

Lets face it people, you are actually making a case for the continuation of the "Electoral College" system. Yes, this is a Democratic Party run-off and not the national elections, but, just like 4 years ago, most of you are voting "emotionally" as opposed to "rationally". To put it into perspective, lets not forget that the Ohio voters cried about their "Jobs" being sent overseas, yet they "Shot Themselves In The Foot" by letting "Yosemite Sam" have another 4 years.

If you go Republican, just to be spiteful, and vote for the "Maverick" don't cry about nothing changing for the better. Also, in case you didn't know it,"Maverick" wants to put more Scalias, Thomases, Alitos, and Roberts on the Supreme Court. Think rationally people.

One last note, to those of you that argue about one candidate having more experience(s) than the other, there is really NO JOB that prepares an individual for The Presidency. It is akin to being a passenger in a car during those days/years before you learned how to drive. You thought that there was nothing to it until you sat in the Driver's Seat. You soon discovered that there was more to it. The same holds true for The Presidency.

Senator Clinton, despite her years as First-Lady and New York Senator, is a Passenger and the same holds true for Senator Obama and Senator McCain. The Presidency, for whomever wins and it holds true for former Presidents, IS a Work In Progress. The only ones that have the experience are ex-presidents and we really don't want them back.

tomdavie:
Be clear on THIS!! Obama did not sneak his name off the ballot. All the candidates AGREED to pull their names off the MI ballot in agreement with the sanctions imposed by the DNC. Hillary Clinton put her name back on the ballot 2 weeks before the "election". Her MI Campaign Chair is our Governer, Jennifer Granholm, who, against HUGE outcry from voters, chose to move up the primary, even though DNC was clear that the election would be illegal and delegates would not be seated. They took this all the way to the Supreme Court in Michigan and lost. MOST of Michigan saw this a political ploy by the Clinton camp the disenfranchise the black voters in Detroit.

Posted by: Jeanne from Michigan | May 8, 2008 9:27:17 AM

My fellow Democrats, READ this carefully...

If you are reasonable people then this should make sense, but if you are biased toward one nominee or the other then you won't see the logic.

The objective is to not only win, but win fair. Agree? So if you are Hillary you would want those votes counted because you are down? fair assessment? If you are Obama you wouldn't to avoid potential change of the waves, right? This doesn't sound too fair in either cases. So here is what I'm saying.

Nobody knew the votes would come down to these two states. So several months ago when the energy was high in both camps we could have DRAWN at RANDOM any two states and take them out of the voting and it would be seen as FAIR, right?? Right! So bottomline is I respect FL and MI votes need to be heard, but the rules were breached and so we should see them AS RANDOM discarded states.......... If you asked Clinton months ago, she would have thought the race would be easy. The same may be true for Obama. SO fellow democrats be reasonable. The demographics overall doesn't support obama, so clinton should never be in this position at all.... Tell me you don't agree........ let's do the right thing treat the votes as ommitted and use the results as they are... Anything else will be seen unfair to a large percentage of people..... DON"T DIVIDE THE PARTY. DON"T DIVIDE THE PARTY.

Elsie.

I live in florida. Yes , we were highly dissapointed .

Look. We understood that we were not getting delegates, or they were in 'dispute' .

But nobody told us our vote WOULDNT COUNT.

If that was the case, there would have been no ballots. They wouldnt have counted the votes or recorded it.

Everyone who voted down here knew the vote counted and were proud of our support for Obama, Edwards and Clinton.

Obama blowing it off going 'no delegates were awarded so who cares' really angered a lot of folks.

Especially those who went out to vote for the guy.

We appreciated Hillary thanking us for our vote.

Look.

We dont expect to get delegates. Thats not the issue.

We do expect our voice to be heard.

Now that Obama has won the nomination, he should seat our delegates.

Case closed.

Michigan he should seat them too but thats another story since he snuck his name off the ballot.
