Mr. Voting Rights Says Florida & Michigan Should Not Count
May 07, 2008 10:32 PM
Former President Jimmy Carter told Jay Leno on "The Tonight Show" today that the Michigan and Florida Democratic primaries should not count since the two states "disqualified themselves" by holding early primaries contrary to Democratic Party rules.
Carter's stance will not help Sen. Hillary Clinton's push, which she described this evening at a D.C. fundraiser, saying "that this issue about the voters in Florida and Michigan is a civil rights issue."
Carter has monitored elections all over the world, and worked for election reform in the U.S.
But he has also hinted he's a supporter of Sen. Barack Obama's presidential campaign -- and he had frosty relations with Sen. Clinton's husband.
Carter also said if superdelegates deliver the nomination to a candidate other than the one with the most pledged delegates "it would be a catastrophe for the party."

I am cracking up that you Obama folks are STILL trying to cause an arguemnt over Bill and HIllary Clinton.
Its like you are ADDICTED to calling them names like little children.
Obama has won the nomination.
Stop antagonizing the clinton supporters. Do you think the Clintons read this blogg?
Grow up.

At this point, this democratic nomination is only being disputed because of the name 'Clinton'.
If the fight was between Obama and any of the other ex-candidates, we won't be having all these back-and-forths by now. It would have been concluded a long time ago.

Florida and Michigan arent invalid votes.
They were simply not awarded delegates.
The votes were sanctioned in both states by the secretary of state.
The DNC stripped them of the delegates.
Since Obama is certainly going to be the nominee, the DNC can strip them of 1/2 the delegates or something as punishment, and seat the rest.

tomdavie - all good points. Obama will be the nominee and his issues will be grist for the GOP mill. But I still do not see the visceral laothing of Obama that I see with Clinton.
Either way... this has always been a race for the Dems to loose and they seem hellbent on doing just that.
I do hope they keep it up... I haven't had this much fun since FL2000.
Expect the HBO special next year Primary 2008 or Obama v Clinton, the Musical.

I still cant get over the fact that you people honestly believe Hillary Clinton will 'rally the base' of the GOP.
But Obama with his left wing idiology, his ultra liberal voting record, rev wright, michelle Obama and of course his bitter gate remarks WONT get the GOP together?
What do you think they are saying?
Cant have that LIBERAL Clinton !!!!!!!
We would much rather have the EVEN MORE liberal elitist Obama with the freaky preacher and angry wife !!!!!

This is funny as hell. I a MD resident new MI and FL was not counting. Nobody had a issuse until Hillary started to loss

Why do people want to blame the candidate who benefits from this blatant disregard for party rules? The wrong doing was caused within the state politicians' decision to ignore the effects upon their voters... when Obama is president, I hope he will begin legislature that will provide accountability... and if any politician pushes for actions that are knowingly going to harm the rights of their constituents... let them face the legal charges. These guys are off the hook because Clinton and her cronies in FL are blaming Obama... really, we need to look deeply at the motive behind their action and file charges against them. Nothing else comes close to making sense to resolve this. FL and MI you are out this go round... do not reelect those folks who didn't represent you properly and if you vote for Obama, you can bet you've got the best chance to end the politicians games of old.

The DNC should back the people of FL and MI in a lawsuit against their state representatives who alienated their rights to the election by refusing to follow rules. These representatives of the states should be held accountable and sued... in FL, isn't that somehow the GOP base that was behind it?

An Obama/Clinton ticket... now that would be interesting... I can just imagine the 3 am phone call with both of them slugging it out to pick up the receiver.
Any ticket where Clinton is on will rouse the sleeping GOP base, which has yet to coalesce around McCain.
By the way, Wright's book comes out in October... what timing. I don't think that Clinton would want it... she's now running for 2012!

So much for "the change we can believe in." I don't know about any of you, but I haven't noticed more racist (from both sides) remarks thrown around not just on blogs, but in the real world, in my city and in my place of employment. Obama and his followers have managed to make this world a meaner place. I hope we can all get past this.

If the Obama campaign had not blocked re-votes in FL and MI – the DNC wouldn’t be faced with this no-win situation of what to do with the FL and MI delegates. The voters of FL and MI didn’t break any rules - their state legislatures did. The Clinton and Obama campaigns didn’t break any rules – so they shouldn’t be punished.
What would be wrong with ignoring the illegal primaries and holding primaries that comply with the rules?
Obama likes to complain about “old politics”, but this is, by far the most damaging political move by either side.

TomDavie - Your fearmongering is interesting, but do you really think the President has that much influence? Congress has to pass the legislation -- how well do you think that's going to work? How much do you think Obama will help downticket nominees --- I doubt there will be a democratic surge in Congress (1. Local politics is even dirtier, look @ NC ads, and 2. people are just as disgusted w/Dems in Congress as repubs)

You people are out of control.
Obama has won the nomination.
We need to rally behind him.
I do think Obama almost has to offer the VP spot to hillary however.
I know Pelosi doesnt want him to , but I have looked at it 5 different ways.
Its the only way to guarantee a democratic victory in november.
So stop fighting about Clinton or Obama. There is no fight.
Obama will be the nominee.

OK ok, you win. Let Hillary win because if we don't you're gonna vote for republicans. You've got us all over a barrel with a gun to our heads.
Are you for real? You want to win by extortion now? So lessee you'd rather vote republican to continue to have 40 million uninsured americans, a tax cut for the rich, spiraling national debt, forced pregnancies, a hundred years of war in Iraq, war in Iran, oil companies llaughing all the way to the bank and Karl Rove and his buddies still in power...than vote for Barak Obama a fellow democrat who's ideas and policies are all very similar to Hillary's. Where does that blind hate come from exactly? Because Hillary lost fair and square, or because Barak is an educated black man and you're scared of black men? Tell the truth!

Obama haters, you all are at work, it's a pity that you all are now talking about Michigan and Florida, because it's evident that Hillary is loooooooooooosing!!!!, pity, get it in your faces will OBAMA be sworn in come January, all this cries is not need now, save it for the inaguration, because Obama is sure a winner, how do we trust Hillary with all her LIES, she chages everyday like a Chamelon, now she wants M/Fl to be counted, in her dreams, lets her bow out as a true states woman instead of making a fool of herself, and while we are it, When is she declaring her income Tax, or we have not gotten to 15 april yet??, that is how she lies, and she has lost it, I hope she will not go into a mental home after all this is over.

If Jimmy Carter isn't on the Rules & Bylaws Committee then what he thinks amounts to a small bag of peanuts.

You guys. I know you feel this way. I know you feel that Hillary is the better nominee and would make the better president. I cant agree more.
But Senator Obama won the nomination process fair and square.
If hillary had competed in those caucus's , and held his delegate count down to a 50 or 60 lead, I believe the fact she won all the major primaries and Rev Wright would have pushed the super delegates to her side.
But she didnt. She fell WAY behind. This isnt senators Obamas fault. In all fairness to him and his supporters, he played by the rules and won fair and square.
So lets just face the fact Obama will be the nominee. If he DOESNT offer the VP to hillary, he is going to have to answer as to WHY .
I think the Obama people are kidding themselves if they think they can kick Hillary to the curb rudely and offer her nothing at all. They need hillary to bring us voters back to Obama.
Never mind this 'would you rather have Mc Cain ' rationalle as to why we would vote for Obama.
1/2 of the entire party voted for Clinton. Its no small amount. If we feel as though Hillary is being mistreated in her exit, many will not vote for Obama.
It would be the same in reverse. If Clinton just BOOTED Obama out , the african american community would be furious. Almost certainly Obama would be offered the VP spot.
Perhaps there is another spot she wants instead, but Obama has to make a deal with her . He needs her to bring her voters back to the table. He was unable to win the blue collar vote, and needs hillary to campaign for him.
-he needs to pay off Clintons debt, and the money she loaned the campaign.
- he needs to offer her the VP spot or some other position she wants (if she even wants a position)
- he needs to let her go after universal healthcare , or something close to it. It has always been her baby, and he needs to let her have it.
