Obama May Declare Victory Before Winning

May 08, 2008 5:17 PM

In an interview with Brian Williams on NBC, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, said  that he may declare victory on May 20 after winning the Oregon primary (assuming he does) -- even though he will not have reached the magic number of 2,205 delegates.

“That will be an important day," Obama said. "If at that point we have the majority of pledged delegates, which is possible, then I think we can make a pretty strong claim that we’ve got the most runs and it’s the ninth inning and we’ve won.”

Except of course that this isn't a fight for a majority of pledged delegates. It's a fight for the majority of total delegates -- which includes superdelegates. And the number is 2,025. Not the majority of pledged delegates -- the majority of total delegates.

So to use a football analogy: Up by 14, Obama has the ball at Clinton's 10 yard line with 30 seconds left. Clinton has been arguing with the ref to include touchdowns and field goals that they ruled illegitimate. Clinton has been trying to convince the refs to go into overtime, and she wants to move the goal posts into the stands.

Now Obama wants the game to end early, and he wants the goal posts moved to the 10-yard line.

This strikes me as possibly a huge miscalculation.

UPDATE: The Obama campaign says that despite Obama saying on May 20 he may make the claim that his team has the most runs and "we've won," he was not talking about winning the nomination, but rather winning an "important metric" -- pledged delegates.

Obama may want to declare himself the winner but that is just more of his silly arrogance. There are way too many of us who have been Democrats voting a straight Democratic ticket for over forty years who will NEVER vote for him because he chose to inject racism into this campaign. I would not vote for a racist with a white skin and I will not vote for a racist with a black skin. It breaks my heart that he turned out to be the charletan that he is but when I saw through him I knew that I must do every legal thing that I can to see that he is not elected.

The reason Obama wants to declare himself the winner early is so the pledged delagates won't have the opportunity to switch to Hillary at the National Convention. Typical Chicago style corrupt politics as usual.

If Senator Obama declares himself a winner before he has the required number of voters' delegates, it shows his arrogance and complete disrespect for the election system. With his millions in campaign funds, he will be able to buy the superdelegates with the promise of funds or other favors. So far, the superdelegates don't seem to be very concerned about electing the most qualified candidate to move America forward. HERE COMES THE CHICAGO VERSION OF CLEAN POLITICS. SHAME. SHAME. Hope Clinton fights on for the average American family.

For all you so-called democrats who say you'll vote for McCain:
Go ahead! Vote for McCain!

You're probably the same people who voted for George W. twice, and got us into this mess we're in.
So, if you want to eliminate Roe v. Wade, and continue the deaths of our fellow Americans abroad, so be it.

How can Obama claim victory without Florida and Michigan? Really, they are in such a rush to get through this...can't wait until it backfires. There will not be the healing the Oabma camps thinks...even if Hillary gets on her knees and pleads her supporters to vote BO. I have never disliked a Presidenial candidate more and NOT BECAUSE OF HIS SKIN COLOR. If he were white going to a black hating, jew hating, country hating church with very close ties to pastor...I would not vote for the white guy.
I cannot believe that after Rev. Wright and all Hillary's important win states, he wins NC and they think they are back on track with middle America? NC is not representative of the electorate. Really amazing how Huckabee stayed in the race (far behind where Hillary is) and no one was so outspoken for him to get out. Wow they have treated her like s--- this whole campaign. Go to savagepolitics.com and see the truth about Obama. THAT will be why millions of Americans will never vote for him.

For all the great Hillary supporters on these ABC blogs (and we are many)...the funny thing is I've been watching all week and Obama didn't even have to declare himself the winner...the media has by acting as if we'er on to the General. News coverage is way down on future primaries, like they don't matter. They assume Hillary will win Tues. so no one is talking about that. Then everyone is waiting for the big Oregon win for Obama. There was an Oregonian blogger somewhere that said they are all excited and ready, but I feel the media is pushing this along. Also, let's see Obama debate one more time. I love watching him stutter.

Posted by: Debra | May 9, 2008 1:21:30 PM

gowestyoungman...you need to keep Hillary's request for a debate going. She out performs him at every opportunity and even HIS supporters know he is weak at debates. Clinton camp and Oregonians are asking for a debate and have given several dates, but I'm certain he's blowing it off now, presuming he has this nom. If he's so sure, why not debate her for the last time? Your local papers/press should be all over this. HE RUNS SCARED and just wants to ride this out.
The entertaining Rev. Wright will rear his ugly head again tho...it just better be before November.

If the Clintons and the SDs go against BHO after the pledge delegates have been assigned, what evidence do they have that party won't rip itself apart?

in the reverse

If BHO and the SDs go with the pledge delegates, what evidence do they have that the party won't rip itself apart?

I am from Oregon, and we are not giving up on Hillary-she hasn't given up on the american people and we are not giving up on her-keep fighting in Oregon to give Hillary a win

Posted by: gowestyoungman111 | May 9, 2008 11:40:41 AM

That would be a fatal mistake... Obama should declare no victory until he has enough delegates too say so, or go to the convention and get nominated.

What is the rush...

Very careful is the key word...

the media can be held accountable to their actions now... because this is the internet age and we can save every article they publish on and off the web. we can record their behavior and talk about it for generations to come.

if Obama loses the general election, the media will have blood on their hands. For helping shove his candidacy through the nomination process and not helping the American people vet what kind of candidate he really is.

Posted by: kissthesky | May 9, 2008 10:32:46 AM

and when RFK Jr threw his support behind Clinton, it got buried in the news, unlike Carolyn's announcement. What has Carolyn really done for the American people? Not much compared to RFK Jr.

Posted by: kissthesky | May 9, 2008 10:29:01 AM

yeah there's a media bias against Hillary and for Obama. after Hillary won indiana, the stories the media wanted to portray about it was the conspiracy that rush limbaugh voters were the ones who made her win. they forgot to mention in those articles the important development that the teamster union supported obama right before the election -- the very same issue they reported before the election but quickly forgot after the election because it didn't help their story about the limbaugh campaign.

Also, remember when Hillary went on O'Reilly? CNN had a lovefest for Michelle Obama that same night, giving her interviews and putting it on repeat like 3 or 4 times. She's not even running for president! It was one of the most unsubstantative things I've seen CNN do at an important moment in the primary election.

Posted by: kissthesky | May 9, 2008 10:27:23 AM

I used to want a combo-ticket-no more-why should Hillary and her supporters save his Butt. She has more to offer this country than he does-why should she take a posistion in an administration that will fumble its way thru some very tough problems-He won't get elected without her-and will ruin the democratic party for years if elected-so I say-if Hillary doesn't win the nomination-stay as Senator Clinton and disassociate yourself from his coming debacle.

Posted by: gowestyoungman111 | May 9, 2008 9:47:42 AM

The media is painting a picture much different than the true reality of what is going on.

According to Lou Dobbs Tonight the news has a favorable bias towards Obama and against Senator Clinton. Here are the statistics from his web site.

Lou Dobbs Tonight - Quick Vote
Lou Dobbs had a quick vote on his show tonight and the results were as follows:
Do you believe there is a media bias against Hillary Clinton and in favor of Barack Obama?

Yes 72% 13161
No 28% 5013
Total Votes: 18174

My community wants a Democrat to win the White House. There are just too many issues about Senator Obama that would be raised by the Republicans that he would never be able to defend or withstand.

If Obama is the nominee, not Senator Clinton, Democrats will not win the White House.

Please visit Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun Times, sites on the internet; especially “you tube” to see what the youth is seeing and hearing.

Reverend Wright, Obama’s Church, Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, Obama’s ties with Louis Farrakhan, radical William Ayers and Tony Rezko the Syrian criminal.
Read about the Million Man March, Black Power and Malcolm X.

This is serious. Save our youth from all of Obama's deception.

This is a new world of media outlets for candidates. People are watching and listening to all of it.

Obama is scary.

tomdavie, Hillary as VP will not bring the party together. I will grudgingly vote for a Clinton/Obama ticket, but never Obama/Clinton.

Hillary has proven that she is the smartest, most-qualified candidate. Women of a certain age have seen situations like these time and again in the work place. Where an inferior man gets propped up by a superior woman. Not this time.

Posted by: HoosierSue | May 9, 2008 9:40:34 AM

Just in case Obama needs a reminder-THIS is not a baseball game-its a presidential primary-in third world countries-like he grew up in-you can declare yourself the winner-here-you must get the required number of delegates to be the parties nominee-if he doesn't have them after our vote in oregon-he is only the nominee in his head-and his left wing supporters

Posted by: gowestyoungman111 | May 9, 2008 9:35:18 AM

This cocky elitist will never get my vote!

Posted by: HoosierSue | May 9, 2008 9:23:58 AM

All he need behind him is the banner
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED also.
This will have the same meaning as president bushes declaration.
It will not mean a thing. because he still will not have the number of 2209 delagates.

---It is what I hate about Obama---he is so sure of himself--too sure---thinks everyone is below him---he is really nuts ---coconuts----

Posted by: Jesse James | May 9, 2008 8:00:48 AM

Okay

Obama is MORE electable than Clinton...and less tied to old school politics that got us here. (her ceiling was low to begin with and her high floor has now dropped because of this primary we have seen this now not only in polls but elections). Her base is convicted and will fight for her until the death...but it was at 51% of Americans at it's height...that has now shrunk so far that she CAN NOT WIN. Obama has not.

It will come down to character on one level but not all ...and look at Obama's "character" numbers they are still (after all of this recent mud) still almost as strong if not stronger than McCain's.

Then there are the issues... a no brainer.

and for those who say 50% of Clinton supporters won't vote for Obama...that is hog wash...and anyone who keeps typing might as well say Obama is Godzilla...or the stay puff Marshmallow Man...because those are about as accurate.

Maybe 10-15% of Clinton supporters are going to be angry enough at Hillary losing to vote for a Pro-life...economic stale mate of a candidate as McCain...who wants to continue the foreign policy that is making us and the world less safe ( as much as theywant to portray the opposite...it's not hard to see we have fanned the flames of alquaeda)...

so all these arguments you all want to write are either just plain dumb or just plain out of not wanting to lose...I am pretty sure they are the latter.

Posted by: dl | May 9, 2008 6:37:12 AM

What I really believe is this.

Hillary Clinton is the best candidate. She is the strongest candidate.

Obama is the better public speaker, and had the far better team. He deserves the nomination.

Many folks are putting out this crud that democrats must win and republicans lose. Its the election cycle.

However, Al Gore won the 2000 election in reality, in spite of the Lewinski scandal.

Bush beat dukakis in 88 as well.

The problem is that both John Mc Cain and Barack Obama represent the weakest election candidates I have seen since Ford vs Carter.

Obama is deeply flawed on a personal level . The fact that he is african american means he needs to make an extra connection with whites to show them we are all the same.

But Obama isnt a populist, nor would he wear it well. He is a super star. A latte liberal. High minded, and high ideals.

But Obama has no experience, nor anything but a past that his handlers are determined to keep shut.

His pastor is a drastic problem that sheds him as different than other americans, no matter how he tries to spin.

His wife is angry, and reminds people of a young angry Hillary Clinton far more than Michelle Obama would ever want to admit to even herself .

And then there is Mc Cain. America already knows him. War hero, POW , old guy.

A long stand in the US senate and a mixed bag of signals. Half republican, half democratic.

But at least folks can Identify with him.

Obama will try to stay on course and call Mc Cain ' Mc Bush, and try to pin every failing of the bush administration on Mc Cain.

But it always come back to character, and whether voters can identify with the candiates.

I predict Hillary will win the nomination.

Posted by: Uma | May 9, 2008 5:12:33 AM

Senior Dems Constructed the Hillary-Stopper, a soft spoken black man who would take all of traditional support in the black community. Obama is a fraud, a smoothtalker with no policy but to keep a smart and focused woman, better prepared than anyone in the USA from getting to be President. These people gave us John Kerry when we could have gotten Howard Dean. Now it is Obama. Dems will always loose elections if they don't stop electing candidates who look good, instead of candidates with a substance and an agenda for America that win. Liberal polite snobs do not win! Obama has the Anatomy of Looser written all over him.

I have watched for eight years as the neo-cons tore our country apart.I was so looking forward to this election, because it was our chance to make things better.

I am an Independent but support Hillary, because she is without a doubt the smartest, strongest candidate. I have been turned off by the MSM treatment of her, by Obama and his team's arrogant dismissal of her candidacy, and by the disrespect the DNC has shown her and in retrospect the many Americans who support her.

This election has been an eye-opener. I have watched Ted Kennedy shamelessly pass his brother's legacy to an unproven candidate; while Jesse Jackson
as shamelessly passed DR Martin Luther King's mantle to a man who has done nothing for his people or this country. The topping on the cake was when we were told to believe the talking-point that the out-spoken, opinionated Michelle Obama was like the very reticent, soft- spoken Jacqueline Kennedy.

Obviously, the Democrats are too stupid
to win, because they think the American people can't see the writing on the wall. If they cannot support Hillary, I for one will without hesitation vote for McCain, an American hero and patriot.

Posted by: BJinChicago | May 9, 2008 4:31:04 AM

Unless Obama sticks Hillary on the ticket, he aint winning the presidency.

I myself have tried to get Clinton supporters to come to Obama, but they are just so differnt socially that they cant stand the guy.

There really is a huge social split in the party. Its not just about Obama being a democrat.

Electing a president hasnt been about the issues since 92. Then it was Clinton nailing Bush with the enconomy.

Its always about character. Its so funny , but there are so many folks who would never vote for Obama cause he is pro choice, and those who wont vote for Mc Cain because he is pro life.

It really comes down to simple values like that.

Obama carries himself like an upscale liberal. Wearing overalls and playing the banjo is not going to get him clinton democrats.

He must convince them he is better than a war hero. He can pin the economy on him , but again it was Bush's economy , not Mc Cains.

This is why there is no way for Obama to get the clinton democrats back unless he stick her back on the ticket.

He can then dispatch Bubba out to the sticks to stump rural folks. He is better at getting their vote than anyone except ronald reagan.

Posted by: tomdavie | May 9, 2008 3:16:28 AM

Axelrod and Obama must be hoping for a new cluster of losers to come out of the woodwork, along with the raised level of Hillary bashing by the media to get him through this.

So far, just about every Democratic loser has come out in support of Obama. Perhaps they think that by using Obama as a surrogate to defeat the Clintons somehow it will magically turn them into winners.

Kerry, Kennedy, Carter, Dean, Gore's campaign folks like Brazile, Kerry's like Shrum, Reid the ineffective Sen. leader that has not won a single legislative victory, Pelosi to whom the same applies, and on and on. All losers.

It doesn't work that way. Losers are losers, winners are winners. Even if the losers help defeat the only winners we have had period in the last 42 years, and the only 2 term winners we have had in the past 64 years; nothing changes for them.

They are still losers, and history has recorded them as such.

Obama will soon join their infamous clique, either in the primary or the GE.

Posted by: MC | May 9, 2008 2:55:42 AM

Under Winner-Take-All system, Hillary would have been the nominee.

Throw the caucus results out and Obama's real strength shows.

Barack McGovern Obama is simply not electable.

Posted by: Roger Miller | May 9, 2008 2:37:12 AM

catleya...Hillary is in Oregon tonight and they are all excited. I would love for her to do well, thou they are predicting it's Obama's to win.
I have to tell you, I am a registered Republican who was able to get a Democratic ticket on Feb. 5th, here in Calif. and voted for Hillary. I will support her all the way, for her work ethic, solutions, intelligence, and expert spouse in these troubled global times. (Michelle is no asset for BO). That said...if she was to be the VP, I would still have to vote McCain as he is Presidential material and Obama is not. Hillary would have to lead him by the hand (he copies whatever she says anyways if you saw any of the debates). I really hope Oregonians pressure him to debate Hillary....they have given him 4 different dates, yet he always runs scared. There aren't that many more states to campaign in so he HAS time. It would be a ratings getter, for sure. He has only debated her FOUR TIMES one on one....but they spin it like its 21 debates. Stay supportive...Hillary or McCain '08!

Posted by: Debra | May 9, 2008 2:22:42 AM

catleya...that one word is "fullos---"!
I can't believe Obama is really serious about declaring himself a victory today. He was walking around Capitol Hill like he's the man. He really is so arrogant. Why can't the Rev. come out and play again? Tell us the truth Rev...don't let us wait for your book in October.

Posted by: Debra | May 9, 2008 2:07:56 AM

Obama should let the game play out till June 3 so that Hillary can be seen to be utterly beatten. She wouldn't have any real or imaginary grounds for claiming that the party pushed her out of the race when she had even a remote chance of success.

Posted by: Drew Rocker | May 9, 2008 1:58:39 AM

I think the bombshell that is going to happen in October that could hurt Obama's chances of winning the general election is that Bush will attack Iran.
In that case experience vs. inexperience may become a much larger factor in the race. We have to remember there our polls that show that the American public when it comes to foreign policy trust the Democrats more than the Republicans. When asked though about specific candidates -Clinton, Obama and McCain- they go overwhelmingly McCain.

There are so many many more sources that will give ineresting news articles on Obama. All it takes is time and patience to look them up.

After you read all this information is Obama really the Messiah of the USA? He most certainly is not. On just one point who can vote for someone who Laundered $112,000 thru his Law that he received from Mr. Blackwell. Who can vote for some one who has lied to us so many times and played dirty politics, Who pulled the race card so many times and accused Hillary of doing all of this and she didn’t? Obama did all these dirty Politics as usual tricks. Who brushed Hillary off his shoulders like dandruff or the dirt he walks on. 9No respect for Hillary and No respect for Women)Obama did. Who flipped off Hillary? Obama did. Who has Lied more than any candidate running for President of the USA? If you guessed Obama your right!

Lets find out how Obama supporters have been bamboozled, lied too, manipulated, conned into such an emotional frenzies that all their common sense, logic and reason have been thrown under the bus like the majority of Americans who earn less than $250,000.
The formula:

1. Agitate to engage emotions by telling stories of wounded veteran, the poor and uninsured.

2. Give message or spew lies

3. Heal with feel good emotions by giving feel good quotes, tell joke, tell story with happy ending.

Everything in step 2 when the emotions are engaged becomes absolute truth with out question. Why because we are hurt emotionally (Step 1) by the peoples true stories at this point all common sense, reasoning and logic have totally been thrown under the bus. Step 2. Everything said becomes truth eve if a bunch lies has just been spewed. Step 3 Ensures that you feel good emotionally about the message or lies just spewed to you and again all common sense, reasoning, and logic are thrown under the bus again. This is the reason why Obama can only give prepared teleprompter speeches and Obama fails to answer questions from the audience or in Debates. He only knows how to speak using this formula in prepared speeches. Obama supporters, DNC and Super-delegates vote for Hillary and tell Obama the jig is up and tell Obama to end his candidacy for President of the USA.

I can't wait to see the defector DEMs numbers be the largest EVER in Nov., if Obama is the nominee. REALLY, it will be the other historic thing about this election. Hillary supporters are not just saying it either...they will strongly and maybe more silently do it...vote McCain. I know there is a website Recreate68 that is threatening riots if Obama doesn't get it, and everyone is all quiet now, because they believe this think is buttoned up. There could be an upset anyday. Wright could give another interview. There is BIG money to be made, for whoever has film of Obama in Wright's church during inflammatory sermons, or any info. I think Wright is in lock down mode and there are helicopters over his house all the time. I'm sure there is part of the Obama posse at all the doors to his house 24/7. It's not just Wright....there is SOMETHING out there and camp Hillary knows it. That being said, we all know enough, without another bombshell. IF NOT HILLARY, THAN McCAIN '08! Looking forward to next debate in Oregon.

It's amusing to note that since college is out the Obamabots, and their hateful divisive Internet spam has mysteriously disappeared up.

Hillary's supporters have valued her for her experience, dedication, and unrelentless fight for the common man. Many of us remember the 1990s when she worked tirelessly to implement universal health care for EVERYONE. We will be there for her now.

Posted by: Joanna | May 9, 2008 12:55:19 AM

I still think Hillary can win. She has very good reasons to argue that she's a better candidate than Obama, from what has been played out in the primaries so far. We shouldn't look at the so called delegates math because it's a flawed system which needs to be changed in the future.

First of all, caucuses should be canceled. I'm so surprised that this so undemocratic thing actually exists in the democratic party!!! This is the thing that has virtually killed Hillary. However, it does not represent voters much. All caucuses delegates should be canceled. Let all people vote! Then you will see that Hillary's a stronger candidate! Caucuses don't exist in the general election, so Obama might lose big!

Secondly, it should be winner-take-all, just like the general election. Hillary has virtually won nearly all the big states and swing states, yet Obama hasn't proven his electability in this aspect.

Hillary should definitely fight on until the end, because Obama will not want to lose the election and he's sent out signals that he might ask Hillary to be his running mate. In this case, Hillary should negotiate with Obama about the ticket. The deal she proposes should be clinton/Obama, not vice versa. Obama either accept the deal to be her VP, or Hillary run as an independent or even wait for 2012. So in the end, Obama might have to accept it because he will lose without working together with Hillary!!! Even if Obama doesn't accept it, the democratic party will beg him to accept to be VP because they can't afford to lose the party!!!

Hillary, you go, fight until August in the convention. You have so many adamant supporters lining up behind you. I'll not vote for Obama, never, ever!

Posted by: Cici | May 9, 2008 12:54:44 AM

How arrogant and presumptuous of Obama to coronate himself king already. In primaries held since Obama's judgement has been called into question by the Rev. Wright controversy, Hillary has won the vote in four out of the five big state primaries: Ohio, Texas, Pennsylvania, and Indiana, yet she's supposed to quit?

Posted by: andre | May 9, 2008 12:45:08 AM

Fontapa,
the racism issue is a genuine relevant issue. Even Obama has admitted that.

The fact is, America is on the brink of disaster right now after 8 years of George W with the economy and the war. If the republicans get the presidency for the next 4 years, who knows if there will be much of an America left. It doesn't matter whether it is racism or inexperience or (insert issue here) is the reason that Obama might lose... a loss is a loss.

Posted by: kissthesky | May 9, 2008 12:41:10 AM

people who think Clintons are nothing but powerhungry maniacs.... where have you been the last 16 years? The Clintons have done more for the average person in this country than anybody else since LBJ. Seriously... you republicans just don't grow up.

Let's not forget that the bush's and regean's were basically from the same allegiance. And let's not forget that some of Nixon's people became George W's people (cheny and rumsfeld)... it does not get more power-mongering than that.

Posted by: kissthesky | May 9, 2008 12:36:00 AM

If Hillary is not the nominee , it will be a disaster for the Dems. who can brace themselves and kiss up to the ultra-Liberals for another 8 Republcan years . McCain is a much more deserving candidate who will not bend to the likes of Hugo Chavez , Mamouth Amedinejad ( or whateva that nut is called) , like Obama . As for Hillary , you have run a great campaign , what a lady , I thought Thatcher of London was the Iron Lady , well , I was wrong , we have a more deserving one at that title now . Too bad she got stabbed in the back by her so-called friends and by the black community whom she helped a lot when her husband is the pres. and speaking of Bill , well , he got his problems , but at least , he did his job when Hired , so , that is fine with me , I don't mind having him a second time around in this needy period . I know a lot of Americans won't mind too. I say Hillary should go and run as an independent the way Joe Libberman did . Show the unappreciative Dems and the rest of the nation what you can do ....if Hillary is not the nominee, she should run as an indepedent and I bet she will still win . Screw the Dems. party ......Run as an independent....Hillary 08 ....

Debra -

You're deluding yourself if you think Obama would galvanize Republican support more than Clinton. There is no-one in America the Republican Party hates more that Bill and Hillary Clinton.

I'm guessing you are either extremely young, or you were living in a cave throughout the late nineties.

Don't you see, this is why Rush wanted folks to vote for Clinton. This is why the Republians, John McCain, and all the conservative independent groups have been attacking Obama non-stop and saying nothing about Clinton.

A contest with Hillary Clinton would be the wildest wet fantasy the Republicans could have ever dreamed of.

Luckily enough for the Democratic Party, a Hillary Clinton nomination is just that, a fantasy.

The numbers don't lie, even when coming out of Hillary's mouth.

WestCoastMessenger...are you sure about Oregon. I thought it was more liberal and leaning very left. Sounds like Obamaland. I will say the young guy I talked to in Hillary's Oregon office today sounded pumped up and ready to work hard for a win. THEY HAVE TO GET HIM TO DEBATE AGAIN. He looks like such a weenie when he dodges. If he's so ready to claim his victory...show some confidence and do televised debate. Oregon is going to press him on this and he can't claim no time excuse. There aren't that many states left to campaign in...maybe he wants another vacation break like his Easter in St. Thomas. Hillary was at church and working hard on campaign. This is one tough fighter and hard worker. HILLARY OR McCAIN '08. THERE WILL BE A SURGE IN REPUBLICAN SUPPORT IF OBAMA GETS THIS NOM.

Posted by: Debra | May 9, 2008 12:22:57 AM

Bishop, sounds like you are voting for Hillary because she is a woman. I am a 70 year old white woman who thinks Hillary will do anything to win the nomination. She has lied and can't be trusted. You can't fool an old woman like me. She does not have your best interest at heart. This is all about the Clinton legacy and their entitlement to the white house. Hillary will say anything to get your vote. How about the gas tax. I had to laugh about that, just pandering. And even when all the economists rejected it she still moved on with it. She reminds me of George W Bush. They are the cowboys that won't listen to anyone because they think they are right. We don't need this. I am staying home and not voting because McCain will not take this country forward either. I do care about the Supreme Court though.

Debra -

I didn't say Hillary didn't win big states. I saw a post that said Obama's delegate lead was due to overwhelming African American support in the early states.

There are a couple of problems with this.

There were several early states that he got a net delegate lead from that had very small African American populations, like mine.

Second, in the beginning of this campaign, his support amongst African Americans wasn't all that profound. It gained strength over time.

My other point is simple.

Hillary can't win delegates, popular votes, number of states, or any other measure of victory.

She now says she's running solely on the idea that Superdelegates might overwhelmingly flock to her side. (she'd need upwards of 7/10 of all remaining supers).

Her rationale for why they should overturn the democratic results of the entire contest?

She says white people won't vote for the black candidate.

That's it. That's her argument.

It's irrelevant how much statistical evidence there is to this rationale, the fact remains it is a DISGUSTING phenomenon on both sides of the issue.

Complete racial polarization is the opposite of everything the Democratic Party stands for. To tout it as your core campaign strength is appalling.

I don't care if it's effective in getting her the nomination, she should be just as repulsed by taking advantage of that polarization as she would an offer to have George Bush as her VP.

Some things transcend scoring political points and victories.

In short, if she has to take advantage of this repulsive racism taking place on both sides to get the nomination, she should do the decent thing and let the nomination go.

Hey moderator, can you sense how disappointed we, Hillary ardent supporters, are if she does not get the Democratic nominee?

And for the media and the Obama-stricken political pundits to suggest that we will all rally behind Obama once Clinton drops out of the race is nauseating ..

It will never happen ... Do you see that?
We are the Hillary supporters who really believe she would make a great President ... head and shoulders over Obama anytime, anyplace and anywhere.

We will never rally behind Obama, rain or shine.

"Typical White Person" here.....

I'm votin' for McCain if Clinton isn't the nominee.

Posted by: Ryan | May 9, 2008 12:16:16 AM

fontapaw...Obama had his lucky 11 win streak when he was still unknown and Americans were "hope"ful. I do think alot of the nation wanted a new face, especially a new face of color. Unfortunately, more and more of us started educating ourselves and his negatives grew and grew. Too late, he already won those 11 states. He's lost his new car smell and is a stinky lemon.
Wright, Rezko, Ayers, his wife, Hamas, the list goes on and on and Republicans are getting ready for some mud slinging. We all know the Clintons...no real surprises there.
They've done more for American people than Obmam in his 143 days working in the Senate. His resume is horribly lacking, so is his judgement.

Do not be distressed about your comments being deleted or not deleted.
Because it does not change anything.

All you have to do is vote MCCAIn in November, if Hillary is not the nominee and work between now and then to get as many as you know how to vote for MCCAIN.

A WIN for MCCAIN in November is all that counts ...

"Ok, that's it. ABC has silenced me for the last time. Consider me no longer a viewer once "Dancing with the Stars" is over."

Guys, can we have a partisan break for a moment? Cease-fire? Okay.

Can anyone tell me this is not the funniest single quote you've ever seen on this site? Not attacking him for being a particular supporter, but just thought the quote itself was hysterical.

Maybe its just me...

Posted by: fontapa | May 9, 2008 12:07:03 AM

We're still in it to win it. Hillary will prevail. Crush Obama in WV, Kentucky, and we're in for an Oregon surprise! (There is only a tiny AA population in Oregon, and Oregon's majority leans to right of center. Voting is already underway, started at the height of the Jeremiah Wright scandal. We shall see, we shall see.

Another foolish point full of holes...

Why would anyone only look at the last 10 votes in a nominating process to compare nominees?

Obama's won over 3/4ths of the contests so far. Over 30 contests. At one point, he won 12 in a row.

He's maintained a delegate lead for months.

Is this another Clinton tactic of picking meaningless statistics out of thin air?

"Well, if you only count votes taken on days when the moon is in the house of Aquarius, and you only count congenital idiots named Goober in half the states, and only Pediatricians in the other states, and you divide that by my social security number, and you thawed out Walt Disney's head and used it to play skee-ball, and took the best score 2 out of 3, and than pretended that number was my delegate count, then I'd be winning..."

You know I really don't think any of the Obama supporters get it being nice is not going to heal this thier are millions of women that are broken hearted by the way Hillary has been treated we know she can take the heat but it still cuts deep and the healing will be a long time coming all the nasty jokes all the put downs have really cut deep into some of our souls that is why this election is not going to turn out well.

Lopsided early support from African Americans is why he's ahead?

That's funny. My state is whiter than a boxes set of episodes of the Lawrence Welk show. We probably have more albinos than African Americans or any other non-white race here.

And guess what... Obama won our votes in a landslide...

How can you get excited about a candidate who's willing to say "choose me as your nominee, because white folks won't vote for the black dude"?

Even if it's statistically true, this racial divide is a disgusting phenomenon, and whatever the cause, it represents the antithesis of what the Democratic Party stands for.

How can you March into Battle with her?

"I can't win delegates, popular votes, states, contests, or any other measure, but if you choose the black guy, white people won't go for him, so superdelegates should overturn the results and give it to me"

That's seriously the leader you want to follow???

Posted by: fontapa | May 8, 2008 11:56:11 PM

jerome, hahawrong, DMK....I must admit the vicious Obama cult are not blogging as much...paid or otherwise. They must think it's in the tank for BO. I heard there is going to be a bombshell for BO in October...someone in Clinton camp was mentioned on Fox as knowing something. Wright's autobiography and book tour perhaps? October will be too late but I do feel Obama is sort of radioactive and ready to implode anytime.

Posted by: Debra | May 8, 2008 11:55:12 PM

First off, I think he's making a mistake by attempting to shut the process down before all the States are in and in doing so he certainly isn't going to win over those Clinton supporters very easily. I'm not surprised though that he would be looking at attempting to shut this process down by the end of May because I very much doubt that he wants too much coverage on the primaries in Puerto Rico. The mainstream media down there has covered the Sinclair allegations and I would think there would be a potential for that to hit our mainstream media. I've always figured Obama wouldn't let this process go to Puerto Rico because of that.

Posted by: alpaig | May 8, 2008 11:50:38 PM

Yes Debra, very catchy. However part of my concern is with the Supreme Court nominations. I honestly believe that Hillary's or Obama's picks will be similar.

Posted by: fivepin | May 8, 2008 11:49:33 PM

Mara - thank you for finishing my point. The party loyalty of AA's is exactly why Obama is doomed in Nov.
- He's leading today, due to lopsided support from African Americans. He hasn't galvanized the larger at-risk blocs.
- African Americans have a long history of supporting the democratic candidate. I don't know if any repub (maybe the Reagan landslide in 84?) carried the black vote.
- The benefit of Obama's lopsided support isn't relevant in Nov. He's tapped out that constituency. Let me say that again. He cannot squeeze any more votes from this demographic. And they were likely to vote dem. anyway.

I'm not trying to write off the black vote or take their loyalty for granted. I'm pointing out that today's benefit isn't news in November for the Democrats. Your numbers prove my point. He can't do better than either Gore, Kerry or Bill. And he's barely ahead in the race for the nomination with their lopsided (early) support.

Posted by: BoNama | May 8, 2008 11:44:03 PM

fivepin...not everybody is a party loyalist. I am a registered Republican who voted Hillary here in Calif. and have no problem throwing my support to McCain. In fact, I'm going into the
T-shirt business...$19.95...HILLARY SUPPORTERS VOTE McCAIN '08. Kinda catchy, don't ya think?

Posted by: Debra | May 8, 2008 11:43:47 PM

pt...you are deluding yourself if you think Hillary will bow out after Kentucky. Are you crazy? I called and spoke to a young guy in her Oregon office today and they (Oregonians) want a debate. They have offered chicken little four different dates...he's either too arrogant to respond or running scared to debate Hillary as usual. How long does he think he can dodge the tough questions in front of televised audience...not some soft ball interview with Tim Russert?
No, Hillary is not pulling out after Kentucky...if you think so, call her Oregon office who are all ready and waiting to fight on with her. She will probably lose liberal Oregon....but she doesn't run scared.

Posted by: Debra | May 8, 2008 11:36:23 PM

I finished with the democratic party.
I'm going back to republican party.

I will vote for McCain in november.

Now we see the Hillbots suggesting that
Obama is getting "uppity" since the
last 2 primaries. It's easier to be
called a feminist than a racist...watch
it you liberal sexists....Big Al and
Rev. JJ are watching.

If Obama loses West Virginia he should drop out.

Posted by: tomdavie | May 8, 2008 11:30:27 PM

I tell you one thing that will be fun. Watching MSNBC freak-out when Obama gets trashed. I have not watched MSNBC in 4 months but I think I may have to start just to see Keith cry.

Posted by: former democrat | May 8, 2008 11:30:08 PM

Nonsense. I watched the entire interview. The newsman parsed what Obama said - and cherry-picked one comment to make a case - and threw in a pretty dumb sports line along with it. There was nothing remotely arrogant about the interview, and Obama was completely respectful of Hillary Clinton and her decision to continue the race. "This strikes me as possibly a huge miscalculation." He didn't even say that he was assured of a victory - let alone a victory on May 20. And anybody who can read figures knows he doesn't need the goal posts moved anywhere. There were plenty of solid political stories to cover today - and this is just another bit of manufactured controversy.

I got my new bumber sticker:

DEMOCRATS FOR McCAIN

Posted by: Nicholas | May 8, 2008 11:18:31 PM

Jimmy Carter said on Jay Leno last night that the votes of MI and FL should count - in 2012! While Obama bashes Clinton, the loser democratic ex-president that supports Obama makes the rounds of tv talk shows like he's some kind of royalty. And Carter is just back from his meetings with Obama's good friends in Hamas. Carter travels all over the world to enforce fair elections, now we know what Carter is really doing - he's getting paid to throw elections! Obama might as well just declare himself president on May 20th, he already thinks he's president anyway, and if you disagree with him, then you are a racist!

Posted by: frisco girl | May 8, 2008 11:13:41 PM

Well that will be interesting if he loses a state by 40% the same day as he declares victory.

I'm sure disrepecting Puerto Rico will go over well in NY and other Hispanic states.

The man is so unelectable.

This proves the theory that most of the Obama supporters on these blogs are in fact paid for by the Obama camp, because now that he's the winner the office can close and take a vacation.

Let the truth be told!

LOL... I haven't noticed that. Or is it that the college kids are taking a break or something? After all, we all know that most of those Obamabots are college students..
