Obama May Declare Victory Before Winning
May 08, 2008 5:17 PM
In an interview with Brian Williams on NBC, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, said that he may declare victory on May 20 after winning the Oregon primary (assuming he does) -- even though he will not have reached the magic number of 2,205 delegates.
“That will be an important day," Obama said. "If at that point we have the majority of pledged delegates, which is possible, then I think we can make a pretty strong claim that we’ve got the most runs and it’s the ninth inning and we’ve won.”
Except of course that this isn't a fight for a majority of pledged delegates. It's a fight for the majority of total delegates -- which includes superdelegates. And the number is 2,025. Not the majority of pledged delegates -- the majority of total delegates.
So to use a football analogy: Up by 14, Obama has the ball at Clinton's 10 yard line with 30 seconds left. Clinton has been arguing with the ref to include touchdowns and field goals that they ruled illegitimate. Clinton has been trying to convince the refs to go into overtime, and she wants to move the goal posts into the stands.
Now Obama wants the game to end early, and he wants the goal posts moved to the 10-yard line.
This strikes me as possibly a huge miscalculation.

UPDATE: The Obama campaign says that despite Obama saying on May 20 he may make the claim that his team has the most runs and "we've won," he was not talking about winning the nomination, but rather winning an "important metric" -- pledged delegates.

"You're probably the same people who voted for George W. twice, and got us into this mess we're in."
No, actually we voted for the Dem candidate, not Nader, not Kucinich. For Gore and Kerry, and we got burned with who the party picked for us. Now we have a candidate that will fight for the agenda we've been waiting for, and she's been told to "go away, your slip is showing, again." I won't vote for McCain, but I won't vote for Obama either, I can't have that on my conscience.

I hate how people keep saying Obama is African-American and needs to make a connection to the white voters. I hate how people keep saying Obama is a racist in a black skin...
Are you people stupid? Obama is HALF AFRICAN AMERICAN and HALF WHITE. If anything, he's the least likely to be racist and the most likely to understand both sides of the race issue.
I wonder how anybody can seriously believe anything you people say when you don't even know the simple facts...

I HAVE STARTED TO DISLIKE OBAMA :), and it is quite difficult for me to dislike people in general.
Obama and his team are demonstrating a high level of meanness and lack of respect for others. When he trailed the superdelegates, their team were totally against the concept, now that they are leading, they love it. Before the vote of people meant something but their team is chicken and can not see that Hillary may indeed lead in the popular vote.
More importantly, Obama is totally overrated. :)
Do we really want another idiot in the white house? :) .... Or another loser such as Kerry so that McCain goes to white house?
Between Obama and McCain, my democrat vote will be casted for McCain!

Obama may want to declare himself the winner but that is just more of his silly arrogance. There are way too many of us who have been Democrats voting a straight Democratic ticket for over forty years who will NEVER vote for him because he chose to inject racism into this campaign. I would not vote for a racist with a white skin and I will not vote for a racist with a black skin. It breaks my heart that he turned out to be the charletan that he is but when I saw through him I knew that I must do every legal thing that I can to see that he is not elected.

The reason Obama wants to declare himself the winner early is so the pledged delagates won't have the opportunity to switch to Hillary at the National Convention. Typical Chicago style corrupt politics as usual.

If Senator Obama declares himself a winner before he has the required number of voters' delegates, it shows his arrogance and complete disrespect for the election system. With his millions in campaign funds, he will be able to buy the superdelegates with the promise of funds or other favors. So far, the superdelegates don't seem to be very concerned about electing the most qualified candidate to move America forward. HERE COMES THE CHICAGO VERSION OF CLEAN POLITICS. SHAME. SHAME. Hope Clinton fights on for the average American family.

For all you so-called democrats who say you'll vote for McCain:
Go ahead! Vote for McCain!
You're probably the same people who voted for George W. twice, and got us into this mess we're in.
So, if you want to eliminate Roe v. Wade, and continue the deaths of our fellow Americans abroad, so be it.

How can Obama claim victory without Florida and Michigan? Really, they are in such a rush to get through this...can't wait until it backfires. There will not be the healing the Oabma camps thinks...even if Hillary gets on her knees and pleads her supporters to vote BO. I have never disliked a Presidenial candidate more and NOT BECAUSE OF HIS SKIN COLOR. If he were white going to a black hating, jew hating, country hating church with very close ties to pastor...I would not vote for the white guy.
I cannot believe that after Rev. Wright and all Hillary's important win states, he wins NC and they think they are back on track with middle America? NC is not representative of the electorate. Really amazing how Huckabee stayed in the race (far behind where Hillary is) and no one was so outspoken for him to get out. Wow they have treated her like s--- this whole campaign. Go to savagepolitics.com and see the truth about Obama. THAT will be why millions of Americans will never vote for him.

For all the great Hillary supporters on these ABC blogs (and we are many)...the funny thing is I've been watching all week and Obama didn't even have to declare himself the winner...the media has by acting as if we'er on to the General. News coverage is way down on future primaries, like they don't matter. They assume Hillary will win Tues. so no one is talking about that. Then everyone is waiting for the big Oregon win for Obama. There was an Oregonian blogger somewhere that said they are all excited and ready, but I feel the media is pushing this along. Also, let's see Obama debate one more time. I love watching him stutter.

gowestyoungman...you need to keep Hillary's request for a debate going. She out performs him at every opportunity and even HIS supporters know he is weak at debates. Clinton camp and Oregonians are asking for a debate and have given several dates, but I'm certain he's blowing it off now, presuming he has this nom. If he's so sure, why not debate her for the last time? Your local papers/press should be all over this. HE RUNS SCARED and just wants to ride this out.
The entertaining Rev. Wright will rear his ugly head again tho...it just better be before November.

If the Clintons and the SDs go against BHO after the pledge delegates have been assigned, what evidence do they have that party won't rip itself apart?
in the reverse

I am from Oregon, and we are not giving up on Hillary-she hasn't given up on the american people and we are not giving up on her-keep fighting in Oregon to give Hillary a win
Posted by: gowestyoungman111 | May 9, 2008 11:40:41 AM
That would be a fatal mistake... Obama should declare no victory until he has enough delegates too say so, or go to the convention and get nominated.
What is the rush...
Very careful is the key word...

the media can be held accountable to their actions now... because this is the internet age and we can save every article they publish on and off the web. we can record their behavior and talk about it for generations to come.
if Obama loses the general election, the media will have blood on their hands. For helping shove his candidacy through the nomination process and not helping the American people vet what kind of candidate he really is.

and when RFK Jr threw his support behind Clinton, it got buried in the news, unlike Carolyn's announcement. What has Carolyn really done for the American people? Not much compared to RFK Jr.

yeah there's a media bias against Hillary and for Obama. after Hillary won indiana, the stories the media wanted to portray about it was the conspiracy that rush limbaugh voters were the ones who made her win. they forgot to mention in those articles the important development that the teamster union supported obama right before the election -- the very same issue they reported before the election but quickly forgot after the election because it didn't help their story about the limbaugh campaign.
Also, remember when Hillary went on O'Reilly? CNN had a lovefest for Michelle Obama that same night, giving her interviews and putting it on repeat like 3 or 4 times. She's not even running for president! It was one of the most unsubstantative things I've seen CNN do at an important moment in the primary election.

I used to want a combo-ticket-no more-why should Hillary and her supporters save his Butt. She has more to offer this country than he does-why should she take a posistion in an administration that will fumble its way thru some very tough problems-He won't get elected without her-and will ruin the democratic party for years if elected-so I say-if Hillary doesn't win the nomination-stay as Senator Clinton and disassociate yourself from his coming debacle.

The media is painting a picture much different than the true reality of what is going on.
According to Lou Dobbs Tonight the news has a favorable bias towards Obama and against Senator Clinton. Here are the statistics from his web site.
Lou Dobbs Tonight - Quick Vote
Lou Dobbs had a quick vote on his show tonight and the results were as follows:
Do you believe there is a media bias against Hillary Clinton and in favor of Barack Obama?
Yes 72% 13161
No 28% 5013
Total Votes: 18174
My community wants a Democrat to win the White House. There are just too many issues about Senator Obama that would be raised by the Republicans that he would never be able to defend or withstand.
If Obama is the nominee, not Senator Clinton, Democrats will not win the White House.
Please visit Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun Times, sites on the internet; especially “you tube” to see what the youth is seeing and hearing.

This is serious. Save our youth from all of Obama's deception.
This is a new world of media outlets for candidates. People are watching and listening to all of it.
Obama is scary.

tomdavie, Hillary as VP will not bring the party together. I will grudgingly vote for a Clinton/Obama ticket, but never Obama/Clinton.
Hillary has proven that she is the smartest, most-qualified candidate. Women of a certain age have seen situations like these time and again in the work place. Where an inferior man gets propped up by a superior woman. Not this time.

Just in case Obama needs a reminder-THIS is not a baseball game-its a presidential primary-in third world countries-like he grew up in-you can declare yourself the winner-here-you must get the required number of delegates to be the parties nominee-if he doesn't have them after our vote in oregon-he is only the nominee in his head-and his left wing supporters
