Older Hoosier to Obama on Gas Tax Holiday: "A Lot of Us Are Nothing But Short-Termers Anyway"

May 01, 2008 4:17 PM

Sen. Barack Obama's stance against the federal gas tax holiday supported by Sens. Hillary Clinton and John McCain may have won him the support of editorial boards and been a factor in the defection/endorsement of superdelegate Joe Andrew, but at least one older Indiana voter isn't so impressed.

With a nod to Obama's complaint that the tax holiday isn't a long-term solution, in Columbia City, Indiana, today an older Hoosier said, "well, even if this tax that we pay on gasoline and the big oil companies would be paying that -- although it is a short term thing as you say -- why can't it be made this money that the oil companies to pay it into that fund that takes care of roads, bridges and stuff, and we can still get some relief on this gas, even if it is short term, and a lot of us are nothing but short termers anyway?"

Watch it HERE.

gjaw, we are the same age. I am sorry but the Clintons are not liked among politicians. And Hillary won't be the nominee. Bill disgraced the white house. Do you really want Bill back in the white house. Omg I don't.

after bill clinton left office everyone just wanted him to go away
and he did he got on about doing good where he could. a lot of people have their aids meds because of the work bill clinton has done-his foundation has HELPED more people that his critics can say it should not exist. he found a void in the world in the world and has tried to fill it.
and remember everyone else just wanted bill clinton to disappear.
I could get into some comparing of bill and jfk but will not.
so everyone just wanted the clintons to go away.
then 911-after 911 we were listening to the people in power and trying to make sense out of what had happened.
I can remember it plainly=a news anchor woman on cnn said-"we sure could use bill clinton"
yes he get a lot of money for speaking engagement-so what, that is the system we live in. but why are people willing to pay so much? maybe because they realize he is smart and they can make sense of what he says.
obama had a speech and got lucky
(just like with any other position he has run for-something happened he got lucky-never an out and right fair and square win)
Maybe obama will go on to be a great president. It still will never change the WAY he got there.
just being lucky-a president should never have it be able to be said they won POTUS because they "were just lucky"
and made a few good speeches.
sen. clinton is the smarter of the 3

lisa, it is a good thing I checked before goodnight.
I am 53 and I know what it is all about
I know exactly what the impeachment deal was really all about too.
and what i do know is
Sen. Clinton is smarter and more qualifed to be president than obama.
obama offers change-but he will be delivering the same old politics as usual. so the only change he will really make is he will be doing the same old, same old.
sen clinton runs circles around obama and mccain on the issues that face us today.
all of that stuff that happened in the past will not put a dime in my pocket over the next four years.
all of that was bills admin.
this is today and tomorrow =sen. clinton time.
you know all while all of that was going on-for me economically things were great.
so it did not faze my life one bit personally.
sen. clinton' run is all about our tomorrow
not bills past.
sen. clinton is smarter than obama and should be president.
obama is just lucky-and he should not be president.
it just goes to show the further "dumbing down" of our country.
when W became president over gore
we dumbed now a notch as a nation.
with either obama or mccain-we are dumbing down even more.
obama supporters will be happy
or mccains supporters will be happy
but the nation needed the smart girl this time.
when we had to chose between g. bush
and kerry-I thought-I wish there was someone else out there-not having anyone in mind.
kerry bush-we couldn't have had two more duller candidates running for president.
until we got to these two. obama with his empy talk and mccain with his nasty flip disposition.
with mccain and obama we have truly hit rock bottom when it comes to picking the best candidate for POTUS
and print this prediction off.
within 18mos to 2years of either mccain or obama' presidency and we will be wishing we had the smart one.-sen. clinton.

jgaw, It's not about the elites, Wright or Obama. It's about Bill Clinton disgracing the party, the white house and our country. Our politicians do not want the Clintons back in the white house....period. Look what they did with it. So that is why they are backing Obama.

Posted by: lisa | May 2, 2008 12:30:38 AM

Iam all for a third party,
Obama should not win the presidency as he maybe about to win it.
he has never won a political position just out and right because he WAS the best candidate.
and we should not have a president
based on what his win will be.
Time for a REAL third party.
the dem bigwigs have been in obama corner all along.
and the super d-will jump on his bandwagon because of what they can get out of him.
sen. clinton will owe them nothing.
she truly is for the people.
obama is bought and paid for.
if black people would just think right
they would not want the first black president to have won this way.
MLK is turning over in his grave.

sad commentary
for POTUS
John Mccain=War hero

Sen. Clinton= the smarter of the three

Barack Obama=just lucky

a pundit who is no friend of sen. clinton said tonight if what we know now about obama had come out back in Feb.
obama WOULD NOT have the lead he has.
now.

Sen. clinton has some political experience-she has a good command of the issue and how to solve them.

Mccain-has been around a long time and although i do not agree-he does have a political resume with some meat in it.

So why are we about to elect someone who has a flimsy politcal resume-who we still barely know-and if what we do know we had know 2mos ago-we would not have him.

So as serious as the times are in the world we maybe about to elect a president of the usa-who has run on hope and change-no specifics-he has shown he is a politician just as any of the others-obama will do and say anything he can to get elected.

and we are possibly going to vote for a president who all he really has going for him is:
"guess he is just lucky"
what a gip.

what a gip

irma,

I am with you!!! I was an Edwards supporter to start also. Dean and Pelosi make me sick. No matter how this turns out, I cannot reconcile their behavior with the "Democratic" Party. It is like a sesspool now and no matter who becomes the nominee that candidate will be tainted. It has very little to do with the candidates themselves either. It has everything to do with the Party "elders." How dare they really? How dare they try to anoint anyone our nominee!

Posted by: countallthevotes | May 1, 2008 11:27:28 PM

Here's my own thought. Remember how people were willing to start a third party and Ross Perot was as far as we could take that? I never considered it, I was a STRONG Democrat. However, I do know now, that if the DNC does not do the right thing by US, a third party is where Dems like me will flow. I just never thought it would be the Dems who would create a New Party. Just in case, I like "Populist Party" for a name. If Dean or Pelosi say another word about ending this, I say we take that third party idea SERIOUSLY, with Hillary as our first candidate, but she won't go for it. Then we could bring John Edwards back in.....we have the numbers.

McCain's vs. Hillary's Plan:

McCain was the first to propose a temporary suspension of the federal gas tax.

His plan would lift the 18.4 cents per gallon tax during peak summer travel months. It also would suspend the 24.4 cent diesel tax.

Clinton, who rejected a similar idea in 2000, said her plan is different from McCain's. She said the Republican's proposal would cost the government up to $10 billion -- money that is used to improve roads.

The senator from New York said she'd make up for the lost revenue with a "windfall profits tax" on oil companies, meaning their profits over a certain amount would be subject to a 50 percent tax.

Her plan also would close $7.5 billion in oil and gas loopholes as well as monitor prices for manipulation

Jake get a good night sleep and come up with something better than this.

Posted by: Tina D | May 1, 2008 10:24:33 PM

"The American Society of Civil Engineers says every dollar invested in highway infrastructure generates $5.40 in economic benefits through reduced delays, improved safety and lower vehicle operating costs. And the federal transportation department says every $1 billion in highway spending creates 34,779 jobs."

Source: Wired.com

Gas Tax Holiday Gimmick Pander plan = $9 Billion shortfall.

9 x 34,779 = 313,001 jobs
9 billion x $5.40 = $48.6 in lost or delayed economic benefits

The Gas Tax Holiday Gimmick is a dumb idea.

As Matt Ygelsias writes, how can we trust Clinton when she says she will implement some form of cap and trade, when she goes for this kind of pander policy?

Bottom line, we can't. It's not a "real solution" at all.

Edwards and Obama are right on the mark.

Clinton is the candidate of the status quo and Clinton vs. McCain = more of the same.

Peter Paul trial....

Why haven't you heard this on the news???---The media wont cover what the Clintons are so desperately trying to cover up! But will cover any little insignificant thing about Obama. You should know the privilege that comes with their "dynasty" and its just that---nasty, political games.

"with his mind on votes
and votes on his mind"

oh God no. please no more speeches.
I see he is trying to be what I guess he and his handlers think is typical white folks
looks like he is in a barn giving a rally- I wonder how many black people are there?
If none, look for him to go rolling down the street in the projects.
he cannot cut it. she is the smarter

Let's hope he doesn't try to give ANOTHER six-flag lecture! The last one was bad enough.

You know what friends one and all
(and I will call you all friends-because we are people here trying to sort this stuff out-some people are not engaged at all-or in it for all the WRONG reasons)
now, I am watching the second day of sen. clinton being on bill oriley show.
and I don't care what you say or all of that old stuff you bring up.
sen. clinton is just plain old flat out smart-first of all I could not believe it she went on the show-when I heard it I said 'OH NO DON'T DO THAT! but listening to her now-maybe she will not be president because the deck was stacked sky high against her but guess what, we will be the losers in the end.
obama cannot sit down and talk about all of these issues with the command that this woman can. mccain-maybe but they will give him softball questions.
obama cannot stand up to this kind of one on one questioning.
sen. clinton loses
the us loses.
most people want obama because he is the black candidate and we should just give it to him
most people want mccain because he is just the last rep left standing
sen. clinton is the smart one in the bunch-and should be president for it.
senator clinton loses
the US loses.
obama does not know the issues like sen. clinton does-she is smarter than he is.
if he is not giving a prepared speech he is stumbling and fumbling for an answer.
We should want the smart one to be the POTUS and for that reason only.
sen. clinton is the smart one.
