Rachael Ray's Scarf Arouses Conservative Ire

May 28, 2008 12:23 PM

Dunkin Donuts has canceled a TV ad featuring cutie-pie cook Rachael Ray because in the ad, draped around her neck, is a black and white silk scarf with paisleys that some conservatives objected to because they thought it too closely resembled a keffiyah.

The Boston Globe has more details.

Says Dunkin Donuts: ‘‘In a recent online ad, Rachael Ray is wearing a black-and-white silk scarf with a paisley design. It was selected by her stylist for the advertising shoot. Absolutely no symbolism was intended. However, given the possibility of misperception, we are no longer using the commercial.’’

Weird days.

Rachel didn't wear a keffiyah -- she wore a paisley scarf. Paisley scarves are not keffiyahs. Look at a picture of Arafat -- those scarves he wears are NOT paisley. Why is the corporate media giving any attention to these crazy rightwing bloggers' nonsense?

WHAT IS AMERICA COMING TO? YOU CAN SAY ANYTHING ANYMORE, NOW YOU CAN'T WEAR ANYTHING ANYMORE! SOMETIMES A SCARF IS JUST A SCARF!

While I agree this is ridiculous because her scarf looks simply like a scarf, I'd like to play the devil's advocate. We must remember symbols have always represented an important part of all cultures throughout time. Had Rachel Ray worn a swastika arm band or white hood the world would have been appalled. I am amazed that certain forms of dress have become en vogue. As an expatriate from the U.S. it disturbs me that we can be so insensitive especially after 911 and I can only attribute this to ignorance. For many of us living elsewhere in the world, we see up close what these symbols represent. These organizations and governments actively support the suppression of women, the banning of freedom of religion and speech, and the tacit acceptance of violence against innocent human beings all in the name of a cause or belief. Have we become so P.C. that we refuse to tell the truth or are we somehow hoping that our own human/democratic values are also shared by all? Read, listen and observe. Actions always speak louder than words. Remember, symbols are powerful messages!

Big deal. A scarf? Hey I don't particularly care for her, but cut her a break. Anyone who thinks this is intentional shoudl get a life.

Dunkin donut is WAY out of line.Only the most rascist ignoramus would complain about a harmless scarf. Each day we move back to the Mccarthy era with people seeing "commies" and "terrorists" everywhere. All you complainers need to realise that not so long ago most of your ancestors were discriminated against. Some for skin color and some for religious convictions. Also Liberals are not socialists by nature, they are open minded and welcome change.Conservatives
on the other hand have a much narrower view and are less willing to change based on new info.Look at the mess in the White House. Call me a fiscal conservative and a social liberal anyday!

Posted by: disgusted | May 29, 2008 7:59:34 PM

I don't see what the big deal is...It doesn't look that similar. It's just a scarf.

Posted by: Briana | May 29, 2008 5:55:13 PM

did i read correctly??? a liberal says that liberals invented the Constitution, the Bill of Rights? they even invented Dr. King? and the City of Selma?
A bit of advice...don't try to debate issues by making ridiculous claims. I would bet real dollars that most of you liberals are actually live and practice conservative values.
A true liberal will admit what liberals believe in. A true liberal believes in Socialism. Although Socialism has failed every place it has been practiced, the "liberals" still believe in it.
A free society does have difficulty in existing, but its worth the effort to remain FREE.
The biggest mistake that liberals/socialsts make is not understanding that people in a free society will die for their rights. Liberals won't sacrifice any thing except other people to further their cause.

maybe we should go after students with back packs in GAP adds next?

She tried to get cute with it, like her Hollywood friends, and got caught.

The supposed Muslim 'head scarf' is also a PAISLEY design. Paisley is a traditional Indian motif, representing the tree of life, and it has been incorporated into many Christian denominations as a symbol of Christ.

I'm afraid Ms. Malkin is, in addition to many other shortcomings, fashion-challenged. She may have had time to research the design of the scarf if she hadn't immediately jumped to the conclusion that Dunkin' Donuts is secretly an Islamic terrorist front organization.

This kind of idiocy has sadly become emblematic of the Republican party, the party I've chosen to be identified with all my life. It's getting harder and harder to call myself a Republican when intellectual lightweights like Malkin, Hannity, and Rush also choose to share that name.

I'm thinking the Libertarian Party is looking pretty good right about now. And hey... former Republican Bob Barr--now running for president as a Libertarian --apparently agrees with me!

The supposed Muslim 'head scarf' is not even on her head. It is around her neck. How is that supporting terrorism?

I suggest we all don our keffiyahs on some set day, go to DD's drivethrus, and then agonize slowly over our orders and fumble for change.

I've got a red one, pretty ugly, from 1978. They were all the rage in West Germany, along with Bundeswehr jackets, painters pants, and clogs.

Now if she had been wearing only the scarf, no one would have complained.

Posted by: Larry | May 29, 2008 2:19:02 AM

I think scarves may now have an opening to make a comeback on the fall fashion runways this year! Hey, I think I'll just stick one in my glovebox for when I want a box of Joe or some munchkins for the kids' class. Now, that'd be funny. A shop full of kerchief clad soccer moms. What is this country coming to???

Posted by: Amy | May 28, 2008 9:31:02 PM

This is ridiculous. Who actually complains about something like this?? WHO??

Posted by: Mike | May 28, 2008 6:46:45 PM

Malkin knows Ray is a democrat (came up in Cindy McCain show) and Malkin is just stirriing up the pot her way.

Because it didn't have the cajones to stick up for her, Ray will probably sue DD for damage to her own reputation, and I'll never be a DD customer again. (I drink about four cups a day...can't you tell?)

Jo,

You need to read the book by Glenn Greenwald entitled: "Great American Hypocrites: toppling the Big myths of Republican politics". After you have read that, then you can come lecture "libs/Dems about hypocrisy and contradictions. Ok? Thanks for your RNC talking points, though.

Michelle Malkin, Faux Commentator had this to say: ‘‘It’s refreshing to see an American company show sensitivity to the concerns of Americans opposed to Islamic jihad and its apologists.’’

My, how enlightened these people are.

Posted by: yourekiddingme | May 28, 2008 5:00:11 PM

Ridiculous.I always thought it was conservatives who complained about political correctness.

Posted by: markymark | May 28, 2008 3:53:55 PM

Um... ok, back to the scarf thing. This has to be the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. I can't believe Dunkin Donuts pulled the ad (although Rachel Ray IS rather annoying)and caved in to this nonsense. The average American doesn't give a crap about what she is wearing in that add and surely aren't stupid enough to read anymore into it than what it is - a SCARF. Jeesh.
