The Edwards' Weigh In (Kind Of)

May 06, 2008 9:28 AM

While still refraining from endorsing, former Sen. John Edwards, D-NC, and his wife Elizabeth sat down to talk to People Magazine about their takes on Sens. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, and Barack Obama, D-Illinois.

It breaks down like this.

John:

LIKES -- Clinton's tenacity; Obama's desire for change, Obama's symbolism as an African-American
DISLIKES -- Clinton's old politics, Obama's occasional lack of substance

Elizabeth:

LIKES -- Clinton's health care plan; Obama's ability to motivate young people
DISLIKES -- Clinton's lobbyist money; Obama's health care plan or his "misleading" advertising about it.

It kinda sounds like he likes Obama and she likes Clinton. If they had to vote today. Which they kinda do.

They both like Obama...and if you took there smaller venue statements from New hampshire...they both are not too keen on the Clintons.

I think Elisabeth just wants to make sure her issue...healthcare moves forward to try and cover everyone...the problem is ...she is out of touch with those blue collar families trying to balance rent and food and healthcare as Clinton is...they don't see how those families won't be helped by a system that hits them with a stipend and a tax credit...those families don't need more bureaucracy...they need cheaper healthcare.

and the financials aren't shrunk by more people in the system...they are hurt by it.

A huge part of the problem is lack of family docs, nurses and surgeons,...and then billing both of which will be exascerbated tremendously with the Clinton plan (and elisabeth's for that matter)...and they do not address the issues of out of control malpractice lawsuits and insurance...

They do not understand these things because their parents had to deal with these but the Edwards haven't had to in decades (yes she has cancer but she has great insurance) and the Clintons have never.

Out side of this one faulty issue...the edwards back Obama in spirit...there is no one who went to an Edwards rally ever...that could say differently.

Edwaeds will come out after the fact just like Richardson such rats. and they will still be snubed by the blue bloods in Washington but crumbs are better than nothing.

John Edwards is a lawyer I wouldn't expect him to endorses anyone, until September.

I see the simpleton minds cannot grasp the fact that the American population can see right through political pandering. Obviously, there are the 30% who lack the ability to grasp abstract thought. They cannot formulate higher level thinking processes that involve cause and effect. It must be frustrating for them not to understand that saving 18 pennies at the pump will not last long because the marketplace will keep raising the prices so they make more money and that the lack of revenue will mean less jobs and less re-building of the infrastructure. But hey if it gets a few simple minded folks to vote for you then it must be worth it.

Very well said, A Reader in Georgia.
I agree with you completely.

Again no solution for Gas prices, just more propaganda, but I digress

Who cares who Edwards supports, he is another elitist who makes his money off the back of hard working Americans!!

I would say that a candidate's "occasional lack of substance" is a serious problem.

But, he likes Obama because he's black.

I would like a black president, and I would like a female president, but that is not their main selling point! Come on!

--the history our nation and the treatment of African American is by far worst then the treatment of women and this nation.--
1/2 of all people are women, Vanessa. One half of AA's, one half of latinos, and 1/2 of all other ethnic groups. Women outnumber any singular ethnic group. After all, there wouldn't be an ethnic group if we didn't give birth to it in the first place. Women did not have the right to vote until 1920, well after black men in this country. Women still make less money than men for the same job (black white or purple) , and women are far under represented in government and business. While it can be debated which is "worse", I think it's clear if you look at the election results, Obama has benefited with AAs for his race while Hillary has not had that same support from women. That, is really telling on how we STILL consider women inferior.. on many levels. Even women, don't support other women. Perhaps we should take a lesson from African Americans. They, after all, know how to support each other as a group, and as a result, they see reforms. Women still haven't figured out to unite for the good of causes we all care about. It's sad.

Posted by: older wh lady | May 6, 2008 10:32:08 AM

70% do not want to pay less for gas. yup. sounds like a Zogby poll to me.

Posted by: geevill | May 6, 2008 10:30:19 AM

Hillary will do very well today, I believe. She is taking it to Obama. He has been playing defense and not an effective defense at that. He's had to fend off Wright, and explain why he's against putting gas tax money back in folks' pockets. And he's tried to attack Hillary for being too tough in language on Iran. He's been forced off the teleprompter circuit and that's bad news for Obama.

Posted by: hopesprings52 | May 6, 2008 10:16:41 AM

Gianelli: If you followed news more closely you would know that Sen. Obama is opposed to the suspension of the federal gas tax in part BECAUSE he supported it in Illinois. He has stated that it did not work in his home state and it was a lesson learned. That is in addition to the fact that the idea is absurd. Americans would save between 25 and 30 dollars over the summer. Moreover, the lost revenue comes from the federal highway fund budget. Economists predict the loss of thousands of federal highway jobs if the tax is suspended. The bottom line: McCain's(Hillary's) plan is a joke. Are Americans so stupid that they believe this idea will help them? If so, Americans get the leadership they deserve.

Obama's money comes from investment banks and lawyers? Give me a break! The Clintons' money (more than ten times the amount of Obama's) comes from dirty backroom deals, China, the list goes on and on. And at least 20 million more have not been disclosed with their "disclosure" of their tax returns. Obama's money is a mere pittance compared to the Clintons' partially because instead of working for chi-chi law firms Obama was on the streets of Chicago doing community outreach. Money is not a good way for you to make comparisons. The Clintons don't score on the up and up side of the equation when it comes to their finances.

I don't know why the topic turned from Edwards to the funding of Obama's campaign...but, I gave for the first time in my life to a political campaign, like 1.5 million Americans!

Some of you posters are ridiculous and the least you could do would be to give Obama credit for running his awesome campaign from a grass roots level, not in debt, like Hillary, and immobilizing the Clinton brand! Remember, this was all supposed to be over on Super Tuesday! What happened? Why can't Hillary close the deal? LOL!

Posted by: Roxanne | May 6, 2008 10:02:47 AM

Funny, no one seems to appreciate the "symbolism" of Hillary being the first female.

Posted by: A reader in Georgia | May 6, 2008 9:59:33 AM

I am for protecting the must vulnerable in our society -- children and lower to no income elderly.

If you screw up the kids no matter what politics you believe, they can't function normally.

On the elderly, our society's underlying principle is that you have a chance to make it but if things break badly based on your choices, you end up with very little. You can end up with very little for a variety of reasons but being old and effectively poor shouldn't mean chronic disease and complete lack of care.

the majority of Obama's money comes from investment banks and lawyers.

Try posting your source on this one. I know for a fact that this is NOT true.

All those who post anti-Obama comments on this and any other website should be challenged to supply their source(s) for their comments. Otherwise, they are just opinion and NOT FACT.

trettin - your comment is so true....

"the majority of Obama's money comes from investment banks and lawyers."

Regarding the Health Care Issue: We've had enough of bad legislation. Senior Citizen Prescription Program, for one, that lines the pockets of Pharmaceitucal companies, and the education program: No Child Left Behind that is costing hard-hit school budgets a great deal and was not funded. These were 'passable'. We need to get it right the first time around. Just 'passable' doesn't always work well, as we see in these two instances. As hard as it is, it would be easier to do it right the first time. Hillary knows this. I think she's on the right track there.... get it right the first time.

Obama will win NC big, the AA vote is 40% of the Democratic vote...

IN will be close... Obama had a rally yestreday and attracted 21,000+ Hoosiers

Posted by: Vanessa | May 6, 2008 9:51:07 AM

Occasional lack of substance? Not even John Edwards could not name a single Obama plan or idea
