The Goldberg Variation

May 13, 2008 8:32 AM

That blatant twisting of Obama's comments about Israel was based on an interview with the senator by Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic, who weighs in on the controversy today.

Goldberg writes that "Mr. Boehner, I'm sure, is a terribly busy man, with many burdensome responsibilities, so I have to assume that he simply didn't have time to read the entire Obama interview, or even the entire paragraph, or even a single clause. If he had, of course, he would have seen that Obama was clearly calling the Middle East conflict, and not Israel, a sore. Why, there's no one who would disagree that the Middle East conflict is a 'sore,' is there?

"I have no doubt that Mr. Boehner will issue a correction to his press release in which he states the obvious, which is that Obama expressed -- in twelve different ways -- his support for Israel to me.
If he doesn't, however, I would, sadly, have to agree with my colleague, the less-forgiving Andrew Sullivan, who called Boehner's statement a 'flat-out lie.' In fact, I would add to Andrew's post, by calling Boehner's statement mendacious, duplicitous, gross, and comically refutable."

Hillary Clinton assisted George Bush in bringing us the Iraq war resulting in the death of over 4000 American personnel. She is definitely no “sweetie.”

Hillary Clinton voted to adopt the resolution to declare
Iran a "terrorist organization" thereby enabling Bush to invade Iran.

Hillary spoke of "obliterating" Iran.

Hillary always speaks of herself as being a “fighter,” when what we need is a statesman. Bush was the “fighter,” the kind who sends others to fight because of his lack of judgment.“ A fighter like that we don’t need. We need someone who will want to negotiate, compromise. Hillary is not the person with the judgment necessary to take the office of commander in chief - "from day one," or from any other time.

Why must American presidential candidates swear fealty to Israel and mouth their talking points all the time?

We give the Israelis billions and billions of dollars every year -- why do they own us?

I agree 100%. The United States has given over 250 billion since we were complicit in giving the jews land belonging to the Palestinians. This is money that could have been used for our own citizens. I look forward to the day when the Zionists start financing their own society. They take some of the weapons we furnish them to use for defense, namely cluster bombs, and use them to bomb, schools, homes, business and apartment buildings. Let these monsters buy their own weapons.

The Obama folks that continually denigrate HRC supporters remind me everyday of Dubya.

Their pernicious, insipid comments are as vacuous and self-destructive as Bush's "bring it on" idiocy.

As such, their comments and behavior will have disasterous results for them and their chosen one.

I suggest they also keep in mind the "Mission Acomplished" pronouncement. That has not turned out so well either.

Obama and Bush have much in common when it comes to supposition, false bravado, and wishful thinking.

We HRC supporters are Obama's "Waterloo", now or the GE. Either way he loses.

Any so-called Democrat that chooses to vote for Hillary is either a Republican or a bigot. She is in no way liberal (open-minded), she panders way way too much to the wrong kind of crowds, and she's made her beliefs pretty clear that white people won't vote for a black man like Obama. So either she's a bigot, or she thinks the people who vote for her are bigots. Which is it? There's nothing about her that would make her a good President. Unfortunately, if it was a choice between her and McCain, I would have to vote for her because a vote for McCain is a sure-bet vote for Bush, while a vote for Clinton, is a toss-up. Obama is the only candidate who actually has morals and by the comments that I've read here, many are happy to just keep their blinders on and see the facts that are clear as day. Say what you want about Obama, he's a much, much better choice than the other two.

kevinbe goode;

I have never been a Republican nor am I yet!

But my COUNTRY is a hell of a lot more important to me than the screwed up
dumb dumb DNC..... which apparently needs a D&C.....

My vote is forever Hillary! and should that option be taken from me.... then I will be happy to cross the street!

As another Illinoisan, I'm not surprised by any twisting of anything from a Republican. . .especially those posing as Democrats on discussion forums in a desperate attempt to encourage the weakest candidate to ascend to the nomination.

Whenever I see one of those clowns endorse McCain, it is obvious what their political stripes really are - and how they love America SOOOOO much that they'd practice any level of deception to get what they want.

Something about this whole interview fails the logic test. I mean, why should ANY American candidate be judged on his devout loyalty to another country? It is absurd when you think about it. Would we expect Obama to be vetted about his loyalty and admiration for Canadians, Swedes, Italians, the Protestant Irish?

Too many Americans are Isreali-centric in their views, and that is not in this country's best interest.

I think Obama speaks for the vast majority of reasonable Americans. Some of the hard core Likudnics who posted above are clearly out of step with mainstream America and the beliefs of our founding fathers who advised us not to get tangled up in grievances that have nothing to do with us.

He will be a great president and the racists and rednecks will just have to come to terms with their inner demons.

Carpenter NY

EXACTLY!

For six years, Obama did nothing which was in anyway politically notable.

In his final year as state senator, Emil Jones decided to push B O into the big time, and gave him all an unbelievable number of bills to call his own and have stamped in his behalf!

Check it out!
He was an empty suit then, and he's an empty suit now!

The only reason people in Illinois would have voted for him would have been to have him stay the hell out of ILlinois....

As an Illinoisian... I'll stick with Hillary as long she's running.... and should she not be the nominee... I'm taking my big feet away from this broken, Humpty Dumpty of a DNC as fast as I possibly can....

At least MCain has done SOMETHING worthy in his life!

Posted by: BE CAREFUL! | May 13, 2008 4:22:32 PM

Politicians comments are taken out of context all the time. Mccain's 100 years and Clinton's obliterate Iran. This will not be the first time and it wont be the last time it happens to Obama. He had better toughen up he has a long way to go.

Posted by: Tina from Florida | May 13, 2008 1:32:25 PM

Obama has a call center in Gaza and he is receiving campaign donations from the middle east. Any chance that Obama will return his Hamas money? As long as Zbig Brezinski is Obama's foreign policy advisor, Obama will be losing the Jewish vote. Obama will have to explain his relationships with Edward Said and Rashid Khalidi as well. Flip flop Obama. Donna Brazile and Howard Dean must be so proud of their driving, their bus is going right off the cliff.

Obama's problem in this interview is that he talks about Israel needing to look at a mirror, but he is barely critical of the Palestinians.
His failure to talk about the pressures he'd put on Palestine/Hamas opened him up to the attacks he's getting now.
I don't think he thinks Israel is a sore, but if you look at the interview to determine what he'd do to help Israel and solve this conflict, his plan seems to be telling Israel they need to behave better.

I'm here cause I care about My Country and WHERE My Taxes Dollars are going to.

I want the Majority of My Tax Dollars to STAY in this Country and help us first.

This Obama comes across as someone I cannot trust to handle our Country's woes/issues now.

I also have a really hard time trusting the man himself.

Which inturn inspires all this chatter.

My friends feel the same way.

Obama speaks to us as if he only wants to say what we want to hear but not TRUTHFULLY what he himself believes.

And alot of it has to do with his Background and Associations and even his Wife.

My friends and I might not agree on everything, but fundamentally we feel very strong about our country and we want to make sure it's in the HANDS of someone we can TRUST.

And we do not Trust Obama.

Nader vs. Obama!

I just got this in my Inbox from Nader campaign:

On Meet the Press on May 4, Senator Obama told Tim Russert that he was willing to debate with "any of my opponents about what this country means, what makes it great."

Senator Obama!

What a breath of fresh air!

Finally!

A Democratic presidential candidate who is willing to debate the corporate takeover of our democracy!

Can't wait.

Nader v. Obama.

Nader and Obama could barnstorm the state - can you say Lincoln-Douglas? - debating public health insurance, curbing the excesses of the oil industry, reversing U.S. policy in the Middle East, and the corporate takeover of our democracy.

What a breath of fresh air!

Just read the comments and noticed that nearly all have NOTHING to do with the article. I guess republicans telling lies is just to old news for anyone to care.

Posted by: JR | May 13, 2008 10:54:33 AM

I can't wait to see the republicans try to swiftboat Obam this year. McCain was already rebuffed and the last people who voted (NC & IN) rejected the pandering and the clinging to the guilt-by-association game. Shaking up the whole system is the best thing for us as a nation. I hope all the negative people out there find something else to cry about after November.

carpenter-nyc I feel your pain. Unfortunately there is always one out there that is an idiot. Last Friday they did the same thing to me. They appear to be very juevenile.

Posted by: rockthebleachers | May 13, 2008 10:50:33 AM

Well, now, let's not get ahead of ourselves. I'm doubtful McCain could kick a football.

Posted by: Bubba | May 13, 2008 10:50:27 AM

Obama can say what he wants .. now ... but he does not support Israel ... his pathetic criticism of Hillary's stance on what the U.S. would do if Iran attacked Israel made his feelings very clear. As his Rev said .. he is a politician ... don't trust him!
