The Math
May 13, 2008 11:01 AM
With former DNC chairman Roy Romer endorsing Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, this morning that makes a net gain of 26 superdelegates for Obama in the last week over Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY.
That completely -- numerically -- negates Clinton's pending West Virginia victory today. The Mountain State has 28 pledged delegates.
(None of which is to say that for the general election Obama doesn't have a huge task ahead of him to convince these white working-class voters that he understands and cares about their problems. But the math is the math.)

Calm down guys....this article was about the math, not racism. I am sorry so many superdelegates are wanting to shut this thing down by trickling his way....that is really sad that they won't let Obama earn his delegates at this point. What are they worried about?Media and pundits are calling this thing over and they'll be sorry when alot of the TV's are turned off and their rating go down. No one will pay attention to the Presidential race, because voters know RIGHT THIS SECOND who they will vote for if it's McCain vs. Obama. I do hope the public does get an opportunity to learn more about Sen. McCain's life and service...it's an unbelievable story and full of love for this country. Obama's done what?

I do wish someone would keep in mind that not all white working class voters live in Appalachia. It's possible that you might even have run into one or two in Oregon, Jake. Or, maybe Wisconsin. Iowa, perhaps? Nevada? Colorado? North Dakota? Washington?
The only reason people are bemoaning Obama's lack of appeal to a particular segment of society is because of a nexus of time and geography that put Appalachian voters in the spotlight during the same short period of time.

In the 2000 presidential election, enough people who couldn't see the difference between Bush and Gore voted for Nader instead. We all know what happened next. Bush has nearly added 4 trillion dollars to the national debt (now it stands at nearly 9.4 trillion), placing a crushing burden in our children's future. He started an unnecessary war in Iraq, for which we are losing about a thousand of our soldiers per year, with no end in sight. We are also spending about one to two hundreds of billions in Iraq per year, propping up a government that is friendly to Iran, and policing a sectarian war that has been going on for over a thousand years. McCain has promised to make Bush's tax cuts permenant. He also pledged to keep our troops in Iraq for a hundred years. Yes he said that he want to keep the troops there as long as they are not being shot at or injured. Good luck waiting for that day to come. There would be peace between Israel and Hamas before there would be peace between Shiites and Sunnies. In the meantime our troops are stuck between two groups who hate the Americans and each other, while the original Al Qaeda is recovering its strength in Afghanistan, and Iran is continuing its nuclear program. If people cannot see the difference between Hillary and McCain, who pledged to continue Bush's policy, then we truly deserve the kind of government that we would get with McCain. May God have mercy on our souls.

Love Obama kissing up to Michigan and Florida now. He dismisses W VA, like it doesn't matter. I will officially turn the cable news off, if and when this race is McCain against BO. I can't stand to hear Obama's yelling speeches, the sound of his voice gives me hives, not chills up my leg. I have never disliked a candidate more in my 50 years. Up to 40 percent of Hillary supporters will vote McCain...that's the polling number I heard today. Let's drive that number way, way up!!!

Today, Hillary will win in West Virginia. She will show the media and the nation that she earned the support the working class. This disrupts the narrative of the media, since they decided some time ago that the nominee was decided. On to next weeks primaries, which will be Kentucky and Oregon. Hillary' 08

Gee, first people who refused to fall under Obama's spell were called racist; now we're called uneducated. And how exactly is it you propose to pull all of us together into one big happy family?

cindyct,
Unfortunately, there is nothing new he has been talking about except repeating the same thing from day one: Yes, we "can" or "can't"...
Posted by: True Truth | May 13, 2008 2:23:54 PM
Why is this the first election that the media decides when the election process is over instead of the People of USA.
Is this just more SEXISM against Hillary never before in an election year have every media outlet put themselves in the middle of people voting.
The DNC setup this timetable of states. Let it play out. Stop trying to stop the people from voting.
That includes ABC also.

There's no such thing as a black elitist.

Dan, what has Obama ever done to back up his words? Actions speak louder than words and words are all he offers. Even in all 57 states.

Censorship for Obama

ONLY THE STUPID PEOPLE ARE VOTING FOR MCCAIN AND HILARY...DOESNT THAT MEAN SOMETHING??? MAYBE YOU GUYS SHOULD TRUST US FOR ONCE AND GO WITH OBAMA...SORRY THAT YOU HAVENT READ A BOOK IN A LONG TIME OR KNOW HOW TO WRITE A COMPLETE PARAGRAPH, BUT PLEASE FOR THE SAKE OF OUR COUNTRY, JUST TRY TO SEE OUR POINT OF VIEW FOR ONCE!
THERE IS NO REASON TO BE AFRAID OF MUSLIMS, GAYS, BLACKS OR ANYONE!!
WE LIVE IN THE SAFEST TIMES THE WORLD HAS EVER SEEN!!!!
AND GUESS WHAT YOU UN-EDUCATED WHITE PEOPLE....OBAMA IS ONLY HALF BLACK AND HE IS NOT A MUSLIM!!!!
Posted by: DAN | May 13, 2008 12:56:39 PM
WHY DO PEOPLE THINK OBAMA IS A MUSILIM???? AND EVEN IF HE WAS WHO CARES!!!
THIS IS WHY WE ARE VOTING FOR OBAMA!
HE IS THE ONLY ONE NOT PLAYING ON THE STUPID PEOPLE IN OUR COUNTRY (aka YOU PEOPLE!)
Posted by: DAN | May 13, 2008 12:52:52 PM
All you Hillary/McCain supporters have nothing new to spread about Obama so you keep bringing up Wright, Chicago politics, Muslums...what a bunch of bunk...get real!!. If you even once really listened to a speach he gave, you would understand who he is and where he is going. But trying to tell a donkey that water is a step away when he is in a stance to not move is fruitless, so I pass.

cindyct,
A lot of people won't agree with you and that is why the fight is still going...
What I posted are very substantial facts and Americans will make their own judgments based on the facts!

Jake superdelegates can change their minds.
They can even say one thing and do another at the ballot box in Denver.
It's a long way until August. Clinton will be the popular vote winner and she should go to Denver and make her case as the most electable candidate.
If the Dems wanted their nominee decided sooner, they should have shceduled their convention sooner.
She should take it to the floor. It's close enough to justify this and she should absolutely not stop fighting because an awful lot of Democrats, in fact most of them believe her to be the best candidate.
Take it to the foor Hill!

Obama will make his change by bringing his infamous Chicago politics into Washington
2. Obama will make new face of US to the world by negotiating terrorists like his advisor just did to Hamas
3. Obama will increase your tax to support his huge economic packages and no way to resolve our national debts
4. Obama will keep the troops in Iraq as long as possible because he has no solution to Iraq but repeating his same old anti-war speech...
5. Obama is truly opportunist by dumping his 20ys uncle pastor to gain his political advantage
6. Obama has been proven out of touch since he can't win work-class people
7. Obama admitted he is a quiter by said he can't win PA, he can't win WV and KY.. He doesn't care those work-class people...
So how will Americans vote for a quiter with the least experience and least qualification to be president of united states....
Americans will vote by their hearts and belief Not Numbers!!!

bhrandon,
Let's see, both parents with PhD's, private schools in Hawaii, degrees from a couple of Ive League colleges, how could that qualify someone as elitist?
Posted by: Buford Gooch | May 13, 2008 12:36:24 PM
bhrandon,
If you do not want McCain as President it is your own fault for supporting an unelectable Democrat.
Posted by: geevill | May 13, 2008 12:32:37 PM
the idea that obama is an elitist and sips cappuccinos is the most propostirious thing i have ever heard.
we can thank clinton for this one....
only the clintons with thier 109million bucks coudl call someone that just payed off student loans a fat cat rich elitist
LOL
give me a break,
if you vote for mccain this fall, you are killing thousands and thousands of more americans, you are dooming the economy, and you are over turning the right for women to choose
go ahead and vote mccain, but when his approval rating is at a negative 86% and you wonder how we got a bush third term, dont blame obama, dont blame the democrats, dont blame the DNC
blame yourself for marking your ballet for mccain
also, Oregon knows Obama isnt an elitist, we are a fairly educated state...
we want someone who has brains to lead, someone who has heart to lead, and someone who will bring america together.
Obama has won fair and square against hillary... im sorry

Well, ain't that the truth. He's in this for himself. Obama, what have you done for me lately? At least I remember being better off in the 90s.
"Obama is charming, but also snooty, arrogant, and full of himself."

the math is the math
as it is with the 50, 000 + soldiers and growing who will need to be taken care of for the rest of their lives...
the numbers of suicides and attempts from those returning from this war that is NOT making us safer
the math is the math
when it comes to the economy
the growing gas prices and how it is going to get worse the more we hold this foreign policy
the numbers of foreclosures and the math behind how it effects the neighbors of those houses...
the numbers that are growing of people who can't afford health coverage
the numbers of people who will be driving all over the world come 2012
the numbers of people who will be flying
the numbers of people who will be starving
the numbers of refugees from countries like Myanmar, Iraq and elsewhere whose poverty teamed with our foreign policy who will look to join al quaeda
the numbers of stories on the covers of world newspapers showing the overwhelming numbers of people who are hoping America makes the right choice
the numbers of left leaning supreme court justices that may retire in the next 4 years...and the number effect that a vote for McCain will have on the congress' ability to fight conservative appointments...
the math is the math when considering how the wealthy in this country percentage wise are saving on their taxes compared to those who can't afford to buy their own home, have healthcare, or afford to drive to work.
The numbers of allies that will see that we understand our mistakes with Iraq and will be more apt to help us if we vote for Obama.
You are right the math is the math.

Hard-working rural voters can spot a phony (of any color) from a mile away.
Obama is charming, but also snooty, arrogant, and full of himself.
He basks in the glory of big rallies, people fainting, media swooning, as he prances around on stage with his head getting bigger and bigger..
He calls small town Americans "bitter" in front of his rich friends, chose a radical anti-American church and pastor...and has an angry militant wife.
He is soft on crime, has shady rich friends, Ok with partial-birth abortion, calls children "punishment".
Yes Obama is out of touch with small town Americans...and he can't figure out why?
Go West Virginia/Go Hillary or McCain
Posted by: cindy in nc | May 13, 2008 12:13:42 PM
good thing there are no "white working class voters" in Oregon, which is going to be another Clinton landslide. When, oh when, will Obama prove he can win this demographic?
I mean, Oregon and Wisconsin are full of black, elite, latte sipping, PhD holding liberals. Woe is Obama!
Posted by: Brian | May 13, 2008 12:05:25 PM
The media does not have to take WV seriously, Jake and other can downplay it all they want, the fact of the matter would be lets see if Obama can win it, if he cant it will be another state added to the tally that he could not carry, and will expect to carry to win the GE.
Hillary needs to go on there is life after this election they may not be life for Obama if he does not win the GE, so fight on Hillary you are making your presence felt and let the idiots bray.

I'm a lifelong Democrat that will never vote for Obama, so good luck in the general. I owe the party nothing, in fact I'm ashamed to say I've been a Democrat this long. Go McCain!

Obama Supporters:
No need to bash. It appears that Clinton will win the battle tonight, but you have already won the war. If you want your candidate to win in November, the reconcilliation needed to start yesterday. In reality, Clinton supporters would be acting the same way; it is our nature to celebrate victory, but remember Senator Obama's promise for a new kind of politics? As his supporters, you must strive to be the change that you seek. That means calming down. That means listening to and understanding to others' frustration. That means welcoming them in to the Obama camp as fellow democrats. Some will resist; some may even hate, but your role should be to simply accept them and allow our nominee to convince them that they should vote in their best interests. So for the good of our party in November, lay off a bit.
Posted by: Cole | May 13, 2008 11:49:37 AM
"That completely -- numerically -- negates Clinton's pending West Virginia victory today"
Really? No superdelagete vote in November. No causcus in November. Just folks like those in West Virginia going to the polls to vote for mcCain it looks like.
Posted by: geevill | May 13, 2008 11:45:50 AM
Many people are complaining that "every vote should count," and I completely agree; however, when the math shows that the votes cannot realistically change the winner, then it is time to move on to the real challenge: allowing our nominee to campaign for the White House.
Remember, these nomination battles are usually finished long before now. The party intentionally front-loaded this year so that there would be a presumptive nominee in February! The long-set system is designed to get through the process earlier so that the nominee can defend the beliefs and platform of the party.
Per MI & FL: the rules are the rules. Don't blame the candidates; blame your elected state leaders. They are the ones who misrepresented your interests! Unfortunately, life requries that we play by the rules, but the rules that aren't allowing your vote to count in the presidential primary will allow you to vote in November. You will be able to vote for Barack Obama, who will change this nation for the better, and you can vote your state leaders out who prevented your voice from being heard this spring.
It's time to unite. Let's put our differences and frustrations behind us. Let's remember what the party stands for; let's support Senator Clinton by supporting the issues she stands for even though she is not the nominee. A vote against Obama simply because he isn't Hillary Clinton is a vote against your best interests, it is a vote against the ideals of our party, and it is a vote against Hillary Clinton because she shares 99% of Obama's political positions, plans, and values.

Spoke you think Obama is the elitist here look at Clinton she cares nothing for the little people of this country she is USING them to get what SHE WANTS wake up.....She says and does everything she knows they want to hear and if being educated is being elite then I am too.She attracts some that can't not even read and that is WV and KY if you don't like my saying this TS ift is true .All Hilly wants is power she is driven to get this no matter what ,GEeeee HILLY can't win pi--es her off so now she is in to prove a point she has greed ----hunger and des not care just don't tell her she can't have this.....She is a wench ask her secret service and see how she treats them ,you think Obama is a snob she think they are her slaves,,,,Many have said so.

Jake, you said: "That completely -- numerically -- negates Clinton's pending West Virginia victory today." And what a shame for the people of West Virginia that their votes are being marginalized by the media. As an example, Mika on Morning Joe was sarcastic about the vote today chortling about having to take it seriously. What a debacle this entire primary became once the media became the 24/7 sales and support center of the Obama campaign.
Keep going, Hillary!

If someone besides a Bush or Clinton was currently in office I suspect she would have had a better chance. Too many folks are ready for a REVOLUTION type change.

All the talking about Hillary will do whatever to get the SDs seems apply to Obama now. Guess these rumors are coming from the Obama's. Very clever.
Posted by: Amy | May 13, 2008 11:15:53 AM
You libs must love the elitists, you give the elitist more power then the popular vote, since the people must vote (and the elitists can vote there) to give a delegate, but the elitists get a delegate for themselves!!
So the dems give 1/3 of the delegate count to elitists!!
So what party again have elitists -
Definition of Elitism - The belief that certain persons or members of certain classes or groups deserve favored treatment by virtue of their perceived superiority, as in intellect, social status, or financial resources.
Obama meets with Billionaire Elitists in San Francisco calling the average person bitter!!
The Modern Day Democrat = Elitist Liberal pushing Stalinism!!
