The Victim Card

May 15, 2008 1:04 PM

FROM GUEST-BLOGGER RICK KLEIN, OF ABC'S THE NOTE

There's an interesting subcurrent developing to the Clinton campaign's efforts to wrest delegates out of the disputed votes in Michigan and Florida.

My former Boston Globe colleague Joan Vennochi reports in her column this morning that a group of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's female supporters are "playing hardball politics" to get DNC Chairman Howard Dean to acknowledge that votes in those state deserve to be counted.

"During a private meeting last week, a group of Massachusetts women asked the chairman of the Democratic National Committee to confront the ugliness of sexism, just as Democrats are confronting the ugliness of racism as a result of Barack Obama's presidential bid," Vennochi reports.

Clinton supporter Deb Goldberg tells Vennochi: "The proof is in the pudding. What does Howard Dean do . . . based on our conversation with him?"

What they want Dean to do is step in and award delegates based on the elections in Michigan and Florida. The DNC's Rules and Bylaws Committee gets the next word -- if not the final word -- on the subject, at the end of the month.

A group of Clinton's female supporters has launched a Website aimed at getting the Democratic Party to reconsider its decision to strip Michigan and Florida of convention delegates.

And there's this from former President Bill Clinton, on the trail Wednesday, dialing up the full outrage over the treatment of states his wife won: "I just ask you all this, do you really believe Florida would be getting this kind of treatment if the vote had turned out the other way?" Clinton said, per ABC's Sarah Amos.

Well, yes. Far be it from me to divine the former president's meaning full here -- but how does the situation in Florida and Michigan relate even a little bit to who won the state?

You can agree or disagree with the Democratic National Committee's decision to punish Michigan or Florida for jumping the line, but to equate that with sexism or any other kind of prejudice against Clinton simply isn't accurate.

As has been discussed numerous, numerous times, both Clinton and Obama were very aware of the DNC's decision to strip Florida and Michigan of its delegates. The rules were put in place long before the voting began, without regard to race, sex, or anyone's regard for Clinton, Barack Obama, or any other politician, living or dead.

As Jake has noted, Harold Ickes -- a top Clinton adviser, and one of the leading voices calling for delegates to be awarded from the two rogue states -- voted for the delegate penalty, back when it wasn't clear who would win.

It sure sounded like Clinton knew what she was getting into on the even of the Michigan primary -- where her name remained on the ballot, and Obama had his removed.

"It's clear: This election they're having is not going to count for anything. I personally did not think it made any difference whether or not my name was on the ballot," Clinton told NPR.

What has been clear is that both campaigns are making arguments that fit their needs. Clinton wants Michigan and Florida to count because she'd gain delegates; Obama doesn't want them to count, because he'd lose some of his lead. Obama wants the will of the voters -- via the pledged delegates -- to be the final word; Clinton wants the superdelegates to be free to make a different judgment.

The delegate debate regarding Michigan and Florida will all play out the way it should, before the Rules and Bylaws Committee, May 31.

But Vennochi seems right on this point: "The Hillary Nutcracker is sexist. Keeping Florida and Michigan out of each candidate's primary vote tally is not. It's hardball politics."

Obama played the gay card in South Carolina, with his gospel tour last fall, it was despicable and he compounded his ACTIONS by a SPEECH in January, in a South Carolina church, castigating the black community for it's homophobia, the homophobia he used to get votes. As Adolph Reed says in the Progressive magazine, he's a con-man who appeals to the college educated, ignorant youth. Since I'm from Florida and the party who before thought it was important to count every vote has stripped me of my voting rights, I'm sitting this one out. Have a nice election with your 48 state strategy. Voting rights are more important than any candidate.

Lilcntrydarling,

Not only that but the people that DEVELOPED THE SANCTION, are NOW working in her campaign. They can't set one standard, then want to change it to suit their person of choice. The Amer. people should be outraged. If the shoe were on the other foot, people would be calling Obama a damn idiot for wanting to go against the RULES set forth. But no, it's their beloved Hillary. And, as well know, rules don't apply to the almighty great Clinton's. Please.

If she doesn't like the rules, then she should turn to Terry and Harold and slap the crap out of them as they are the ones that both crafted them and enforced them. It's over, she lost. People need to get over it and stop crying foul. Stunt and baseless complaints such as this will only prevent future women from advancing beyond NH the next time around. After all, the men would be crazy not to ban together. And, other groups would be crazy not to join them in banning together....

I just want to confront some of the arguments going on here. First of all Hillary and Obama both agreed about Florida and Michigan until Hillary started losing then she wanted to change everyones mind, like usal she whines and cries that she is being treated unfairly.I am NOT a teeny bopper, a drug addict, or in an Obama cult, etc... I am a grown woman with morals, a christian, and white (not that it should matter) but I have listened to all these accusations from you Hillary supporters making excuses as to what we must be to be able to vote for Obama, the truth is he has not bribed us, hypnotized us, or anything else you might say. He ran for president and we liked him just like you like Hillary, it is our choice NOT yours on who we can support, and you can say all you want about voting for Mccain, that is your right but don't complain later when your grandkids, or your elderly parents are starving because you can only blame yourselves for your own stupidity. Time to grow up and support our nominee!!

I think if you're still having trouble seeing Obama bias in the coverage of this election you might want to reread this blog! I get the idea that the MSM thinks all Hillary supporters are female ans somehow that makes it easier to minimize both their numbers and their candidate.

By the way the validatation of victimization and the "witch" hunt for racists in this election is underreported...want to take that one on?

Posted by: Jackie | May 16, 2008 11:06:25 AM

Why did Hillary leave her name on the Michigan ballot???

The candidates agreed not to campaign or PARTICIPATE in Michigan and Florida, yet she kept her name on the ballot.

Depends what the meaning of 'participate' is. (It's a Clinton thing.)

Carlean writes, "She lost this race long time ago."

=============================

A lot of these "intelligent" folks fail to see this. You see, they FAIL to see how the day Hillary and Bill started intentionally "misquote" BHO (and his wife) they FORFEITED 40% of the Black vote they were GUARANTEED. When they SAW how effective Obama was at campaigning they became SCARED and couldn't resist the temptation to NOT play the race card.

Hillary lost my vote and Bill lost my respect when they tried that "cheap", archaic NONSENSE.

Do you remember when Bill got on national TV and said "Obama SAID only the Republicans had good ideas". It was at that moment that it became clear he wasn't trying to appeal to the more CEREBRAL crowd. You know, the kind of people who actually PAY attention and will VERIFY who said what.

She pretty mucy ruined any chance of getting on the ticket when she chose that strategy.

And NOW....you have her supporters whining like children because their candidate lost an election? I can't decide which is more pathetic.

"The Hillary Nutcracker is sexist. Keeping Florida and Michigan out of each candidate's primary vote tally is not. It's hardball politics."

And calling the exclusion of FL & MI sexist is hardball politics too. Don't act so shocked. Expect similar moves from the Obama camp in the general.

Posted by: Judasmac | May 16, 2008 9:14:19 AM

90% of African American voted for Gore. 82% voted for Kerry. Over 90 % voted for Clinton, so why is it racist that 90% vote for Obama. Hillary Clinton would have had 90% had she not started playing the race card and showed them she didn't give a crap about the support they gave the Party or her husband. HRC supporters are delusional. She lost this race long time ago. If she wasn't a woman she would have dropped from the race long ago like the many White men. You'd rather vote for McCain? Do something that idiotic and once again America will get the kind of government it deserves. Enough already. HRC had a bad startegy; poor execution; fiscal mismanagement; and has proven herself to be polarizing and divise. What part of this don't you get? She probably still owes small vendors for all the confetti she has been dropping and the labor group who had to sweep up all that crap. You deride the young people who have been inspired by Barack Obama. Sounds like you are the ones who need to grow up.

No one was required to take his name off of the ballot in Michigan. Obama took HIS off because he figured he wouldn't win there anyways.

But in Florida, where where his name WAS on the ballot and where there was supposed to be NO CAMPAIGNING, Obama was electionairing for TEN DAYS prior to the elections, and still didn't win!

And how come only these two states of the six or seven which didn't play by this stupid rule were punished?

The DNC is a joke.

How can anyone have pride in a party which sells it's delegates' votes to the highest bidder and further impugns our democracy by disenfranchising two states of their right to vote?

I think it will be real easy for us Hillary supporters to either support her nomination with write- in votes..
or take our little tootsies on down to Republican land and saddle up the elephant.

Mccain, after all, is an honorable man and, since we'll have a democratic congress, everything would be copesetic.

The only way I would give up on Hillary if she should be on the same ticket as B O!

I agree that all 50 states (Obama says 57) should have primaries and have their votes or delegates counted. It is not about Clinton/Obama but these voters having a say in the election. The VIPs of the Democratic Party has shown very poor leadership and certainly, Senator Clinton did not vote to have these two states not count. In Florida, it was the Republication Legislature and in Michigan it was the Obama supporters that changed the dates after they knew Clinton had a lead. Obama also removed his name from the ballot for the same reason.
Obama is not honest and wants to win this election by default and by buying the superdelegates. Monday, I heard a report his campaign had put aside $20 million to help the superdelegates in the next election. Sounds dirty to me. If Obama wins, America is in trouble. He is a solid socialist with racist views. His 20 years in Trinty Church backs that up. He has used the Democratic Party and it will forever be weakened. Bet McCain is the next President. Obama is from the Chicago Combine of corrupt politican and businessmen and he needs to be sent back there.

This would not even be an issue if the Democrats apportioned delegates the way the Republicans do. Winner-takes-all, none of this proportional horse-race garbage.

I can't feel sorry for the donkeys, really. The superdelegates can't even do their jobs, which is to break the deadlock according to their own logic and consciences, because of the identity groups (blacks vs women) threatening them from both sides.

Now they both disgust me, and I'll vote for McCain -- who may seem like McSame to some, but compared to these two clowns, looks more and more like McSANE.

The Michigan January vote cannot stand as is, which seems to be the only scenario Clinton will accept. Biden, Edwards, Obama, and Richardson all took their names off the Michigan ballot. Clinton and Dodd were the only ones on the ballot. The Michigan election did not reflect the will of the voters. Voters couldn't vote for their preferred candidate and some just stayed home because their candidate was not on the ballot.

If Clinton really cared about all 50 states having their say, then why did she say in an interview with George Stephanopoulos on 12-30-07 that it will be over by Feb. 5th? (see you tube keywords 'Clinton' 'february 5th')

Obama is winning because he had a 50-state strategy. It’s why he campaigned in states like mine, Utah, that Democrats usually don't care about. It’s why he’s won 28 out of 44 states that have voted thus far, not including D.C. which he also won.

The only states that mattered to Clinton were the ones that voted up until Feb. 5th.

We must start thinking what and who is best for America. That is Hillary Clinton even if a write in vote needs to be done by all. Therefore, this time America’s votes are counted and we the people get back to being a country for the people, not for the politician!

Do you mean reverse discrimination on the Obama Campaign and his supporters against Bill Clinton who stated a fact that Jesse Jackson won South Carolina for histories sake, or against Gerry Farra 's partial statement that was taken out of context, or Hillary's comment to an AP article again taken out of context, as even educated black Americans stated these were dirty politics by the Obama Campaign. Yet the Obama top leaders of his campaign seem to be all young white adults, just were are the black Americans who should be with the other young white adults for his campaign. What is good for the goose is good for the gander! They should of looked to home before throwing stones at Hillary’s Campaign!

Leslie,

I agree with your sentiments, some of them. The anger though is not becoming...I certainly don't mean to come down on you. However, you come across as a hard-core Clinton supporter instead of someone that is alarmed by the possible direction of the party and its future. In anycase, you are correct. She has played the gender card all along. At first people were seeing it but not talking about it. Now, her supporters, and I am one of them(but I don't support this gender war bull), are out there screaming all sorts of injustice. The only injustice is what this will do to future generations.

Again, I am a Hillary supporter but more than that, I am a Democrat. I will never work against my own party. How stupid is that? I like Hillary, I support her but she is not the Democratic party. I will go bonkers if she does not win. I am more concerned with perserving the process AND progress for future generations, than I am at getting back at the establishment or the ol boys club. Some people just need to grow up and accept the fact that she mismanaged her campaign and she is the reason she is behind, not the DNC, not men, not Obama, not ANYONE.

George,
I agree with you as well. The best thing to do is scan a post, if he sounds outlandish and one sided, skip it. I don't read anything that is to heavily biased in one direction or another. I don't read anything that is to long because it is usually filled would outlandish lies and anger. Anyway, I agree and don't get to wrapped up in these people.

So, if all the conservatives who don't like McCain for their petty reasons, and all the women who don't like Obama for all their petty reasons, stay home, we can have an adult election.

How is it a winning strategy for Democrats in November to disenfranchise voters in two important states?

Punish the local parties and count the votes!

Posted by: twinmom48 | May 15, 2008 9:22:45 PM

This lady, Hillary has been fighting for the middle class, working class and the poor. BO get his support from elites, college kids and affluent. Now this man, Edwards is endorsing BO trying to take the wind from Hillary's 41 points win over BO. For the poor, he aint!

In Edwards' speech, he blinks his eyes so frequent that he knows from now on he is just a crooked politician. Elizabeth would be so ashamed of him and she did not show up.

This man, BO can not win the nomination and he is not qualified from his 57 states, Afghanistan gaffe, his audacity of Rev Wright and his bittergate . Another man, Edwards rushes in and gang tackle a woman. It happened last time when Joe Andrew ambushed Hillary for BO in Indiana primary. Still she pulled out a win.

The party can't wait and let people vote and they can't afford to let people's voices heard.

Americans believe in democracy, for the people, of the people and by the people. We hold the principle self-evident. These filthy politicians are going to put the party above people. 2M people are silenced in order to take the momentum away from Hillary. It is action which is a crime not the words. They are doing it to 2M people.

Now, you either vote for an all American, that is Hillary or the filthy politicians, that is BO & Edwards company. I say: there is no way to treat a gallant lady who works so hard.

Tell me your choice?

Moreover, about lies from OBAMA, I have about 70 of them which shall bore us to death. His lies are insidious and well-planned for political and economical profits. There are so many frauds in BO's short career, 4 year Junior national senator for president; the young but not innocent. Give me a break. Don't let this guy sweetie into the oval office. He is going to have problems with women.
