Obama Declares Michelle Off-Limits

May 19, 2008 9:43 AM

On Good Morning America today, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, took issue with a Tennessee Republican Party attack on his wife Michelle for her February comments that "for the first time in my adult lifetime I'm really proud of this country."

The Tennessee GOP launched a web video making much hay out of those comments, suggesting she is unpatriotic.

"The GOP -- should I be the nominee -- I think can say whatever they want to say about me, my track record," Obama told Robin Roberts. (Watch HERE) "If they think that they're going to try to make Michelle an issue in this campaign, they should be careful. Because that I find unacceptable. The notion that you start attacking my wife? Or my family? Michelle is the most honest, the best person I know. She is one of the most caring people I know. She loves this country. For them to try to distort or to play snippets of her remarks in ways that are unflattering to her I think is just low class and I think most of the American people would think that as well."

He also said, "these folks should lay off my wife."

For her part, Michelle Obama denied reports that she did not want Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, to serve as her husband's vice president.

"I think the world of Hillary Clinton," Michelle Obama said. "Particularly, as a woman, having watched her go through a lot of what I might be going through, and doing it with a level of grace, and raising a phenomenal daughter, which -- I have two girls -- and I know how hard just in the little bit of exposure I've had to this what she's had to deal with, and what she's accomplished. So that being said, you know, there is no way that I would say absolutely no to one of the most successful and powerful and groundbreaking women on this planet. What I have said is that I think one of the things that the nominee has earned is the right to pick the vice president that they think will suit them... I think this should be Barack's say, through and through."

Here I am, checking the news over lunch and finding this list of comments that exceeds the article by several times over, most posted in the middle of the day. Doesn't anyone work in the US anymore?

While the BO fanatics can hit Bill and Chelsea, why is Michelle so privileged. Is it another case of reverse discrimination.
Are they going to flash the race card again with this Black Elites.

Another non-political double standard from the Obama campaign.

Posted by: GEB | May 19, 2008 10:04:08 PM

Michelle's problem was that she failed to try an one-up and out-american other citizens. She's been in politics long enough to know that we americans frown on anything but flag waving and speaking insincere political drivel.

i wonder what obama is going to do if they don't heed to his "my wife is off limits"
what will he do the next time?

Posted by: jgaw | May 19, 2008 8:59:39 PM

Geez, OBAMA is complaining now that they are going after his WIFE..HE should be worrying when they come after
HIM..In politics, everything is fair game. Wait until all the negatives that OBAMA and his WIFE were associated and involved with come flying all corners of the United States..I wonder if DNC and all the GOOD 'OLE boys in Washington accept the fact they put the wrong man to represent them in General Election.. They made a mistake TWICE in a row and now OBAMA again.

When I heard Michele Obama say, "If you
can't keep care of your house, how
do you expect to take care of the
White House?" (paraphrasing, regarding
Hillary), THAT was it for me on this
woman for America's lst Lady. She is
no Laura Bush, and I am a Democrat.
Her mouth and chip on her shoulder is
not honorable for a lst Lady. I think
she is pushing power over her husband, and
with all who they associate with, their
conduct appears shady. What a shame.

People should leave his sweetie alone! LOL. Well, the Repubs did the same to Hillary when Bill ran. A lot of the so called "divisiveness" that younger folks today associate with the Clintons merely resulted from Repub. theatrics. In a few more years, younger people will probably think Michelle and Barry are absolutely evil. All the material is there - Wright, Ayers, flagpins, "proud," Rezko....this stuff will keep going forever. And if he's elected, even more and more and more will keep getting churned out.

LA. indiana
I remembered the projection of hatred thrown out by BO supporters as the primary season started. I remembered all the vocabulary used. And I read an article "As Hillary Runs, some Old Foes are on the Side lines" (NY Times) in which I learned about the anti-Clinton launched by the republicans as early as Iowa. I realised that BO and his supporters used the same language and arguments.
That explains why people are so fed up with BO, along with the media bias. This is real. I am sure the republicans study all of this to use it, but the DNC is not very clean neither, the way Dean tried to push HC out. Of course the republicans play dirty, but the Dems should never have used their game in this primary election. What about the idealism proned by BO?
No one expect nice stuff from the republican tactics but from the left wing of the Democrat party, that's pretty ugly. For instance I read to-day an article and learned that Edwards had sided with BO from the beginning. They are the same side. That's fine but it looks like all of them down on HC, the DNC and left wing, the media, the sexist and even the blacks calling the Clintons racist. That's insane. Just let the campaign unfold the way it goes, and the voters can have their say and then if HC is to loose, she will bow out gracefully. But it has always been negative projections : oh she is this she is that, what have you. Give it a break.

The question that I have, is where were Michelle Obama's hands during the interview?

I'm thinking that she had one of them firmly gripping her husband's "set".

His voice seemed a little higher than usual.

Posted by: michelle the dominatrix | May 19, 2008 4:25:58 PM

From "I want to rip his [Bill Clinton's] eyes out" to America being "a downright mean," this Michelle is no lady, and should not be the First Lady. Moreover, she likes to interrupt Barack, who in turn has to ask for permission to "interject." Makes me wonder who wears the pants in their household. Why is Barack married to this termagant?

Posted by: thecandypoem | May 19, 2008 3:47:30 PM

I think that the Republican Party, in attacking Senator Obama's wife, Michelle, have stepped into a political trap of their own making. Michelle Obama isn't seeking the Presidency, as Mrs. McCain is also not running for office. Neither of those, if they get to be First Lady, will be in the line of succession to become President if something were to happen to their husbands. So neither is perceived as fair game by most people trying to determine who to vote for this November.

Posted by: Steven Danis | May 19, 2008 3:29:08 PM

We can't talk about his wife.

We can't talk about his mother.

We can't talk about his grandmother unless he does, and brings her up as a "typical white person."

We can't talk about his father,

can't talk about his preacher,

can't talk about his terrorist friends, c

an't talk about his voting record,

can't talk about his religion.

We can't talk about appeasement.

We can't talk about color; we can't talk about lack of color.

We can't talk about race.

We can't talk about bombers and mobsters who are his friends.

We can't talk about schooling.

We can't talk about his name, "Hussein."

We can't talk about his lack of experience.

Posted by: Moe | May 19, 2008 3:25:11 PM

If Michelle wants to campaign and talk trash as she has about Hillary, then she is fair game. Besides, it's not unprovoked as is usually the case, she brought it on herself. Who cares what Barak declares, his words like his promise of change, mean nothing. Seriously, who does he think he is. It all comes with the territory, he needs to get over himself. The attacks have been very mild thus far. Go get 'em McCain. Hillary Supporter for McCain '08

Posted by: Dan | May 19, 2008 2:24:04 PM

Let's forget for one moment that I find his comment a bit sexist. Michelle, from what I've always seen, has NO problems defending HERself! That aside I simply can NOT believe someone running for President believes the press (or the Republicans) aren't going to frequently consider - and yes, even attack! - his family. It is simply unrealistic! I love his message of hope. I TRULY do! But he's gotta get his head out of the clouds! I've not voting for a person to create our utopia.....and I already have a Messiah in my life (thank you very much).....I'm just voting for a President here. At this point...I'm sticking hard with Hillary!

Posted by: gaypastor | May 19, 2008 2:13:44 PM

You know when people asked Chelsea about her parents and how they handled marriage difficulties, I said that was fair game as long as Chelsea was campaigning for her mom.

If Michelle Obama is to be off limits, she must quit campaigning, it's as simple as that.

Posted by: sherr | May 19, 2008 2:03:14 PM

Ah now, Barry, come on. Do you think America is going to be upset that your wife is a total racist and anti-American?

:D

Barack Obama is such a whiner.

Posted by: Tina from Florida | May 19, 2008 1:49:09 PM

What??!!! Obama needs to understand that the candidate's spouse is part of the package. His wife is essentially running to be the First Lady of the USA. She is as much a public figure as he is and she is totally fair game for questions, inquiry and scrutiny. Especially when she makes public speeches. Is he saying that, because she is his wife, she can say anything she chooses to say -- about herself or him -- and not be held accountable for it.

Puhleez, give us a break. The potential First Lady isn't a public figure? Is this the kind of change he has in mind for us? I have the audacity to hope not.

Obama (who has yet to officially secure the Dem nomination) is now appearing as the official Dem nominee.

When Hillary did the SAME, she was called arrogant.

Double standard?

Posted by: None in 08 | May 19, 2008 1:45:26 PM

He can try and say she is off limits but it was ok for them to attack Bill Clinton.

I am soooooooooo sick of Obama and his followers. I will not vote for him in Nov. I just will not vote.

Don't blame me I voted for Hillary!!.... I should get my bumpersticker ordered now!

Posted by: Michelle | May 19, 2008 1:43:04 PM

So the media needs to lay off Michelle, but Cindy McCain and Bill Clinton are fair game?

Sounds like a double standard.

If it's not, I'm open to any logical and rational explanation.

Posted by: None in 08 | May 19, 2008 1:42:34 PM

If Michelle chooses to appear in public or on national media she absolutely is open to criticism.

If the Obamas can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen and go back to Illinois.

It's called POLITICS, people. Get over it.

Posted by: Debra | May 19, 2008 12:40:03 PM

Here go go again.....
The first card Barack played was the race card and he turned any criticisms of his relationship with extremists or his naive lack of substance as racism...
while at the same time blacks voted for him for the one and only reason that he is black.

For months now, Barack's attack guards has been persecuting and terrorizing Hillary's spouse, Bill Clinton, with the intention to defame him and ridicule him...
Now, Barack Hussein Obama is warning and threatening with harm anyone criticizing his spouse Michelle Obama.....

Here we go again.....Welcomed to the real world of politics!
All Presidential candidates have to be scrutinized in detail and their past relationships, their families and actions weighted before they are seriously considered for the highest office in our country, the commander in chief, the President of the United States of America.

Here we go again.......we can be fooled once, twice, but we can not be fooled all the time.

Posted by: Manolete | May 19, 2008 12:26:49 PM

Obama is starting to show an extremely thin skin. It's not McCains fault that he locked up his nomination very early and you're locked in a clawing and scratching battle with Hillary. He's trying to campaign against McCain while battling Hillary. Close the deal on your nomination and then you will have plenty of time to fight McCain.

Posted by: Tom | May 19, 2008 12:18:27 PM

Michelle is fair game on her speeches and public appearances, and any connections with Obama dealings is fair. Her personal accounting is not, so in that her speech saying that she was never proud of this country in her adult life is fair. Her racist speech in the church is fair (soon to come) This is about Barrack's character and who he associates with is relevant.

Since he wants to give orders I as a citizen which makes me his boss, say resign fro the Senate now!!

Posted by: spock | May 19, 2008 12:04:07 PM

wow you can tell its the day before a primary. They have talked trash about Hillary for years she has run her campaign with no help from the MSM kicking her all the way now they will tear down Obama and His wife do you really think all the rich americans want bush's tax cuts to expire in 2010 with out a heck of a fight that is all they are worried about.

Posted by: Bishop | May 19, 2008 11:39:59 AM

I think that Republicans are going to overreach on Michelle Obama and make the passion the commentators have wanted to see overflow. The thing about all of this is the married men I know are FIERCELY protective of their wives and mothers. Once someone decides they can ridicule the woman, it is enough to set them off.

If Republicans think an irritated and impassioned BHO is better than the distant reserved primary BHO, maybe they need to take her on. Maybe they should hit the woman and invite the press to tear Cindy McCain's finances apart.

*sarcasm* Sound strategy.

Posted by: Genna | May 19, 2008 11:20:11 AM

The democrates have become nothing more then a hypocritical joke of a party. From Dean denouncing Republican tactics that the Dems have used for years to this latest nonsense coming out of the Obama camp. It's getting to the point that they can replace McCain with a circus clown and the Dems would still have no chance of winning in November. Lay off your wife Obama? How many times have you mentioned Bill Clinton during this campaign? I realize it's a bit different since he served eight years as president but give me a break. If you don't want her attacked then take her off your campaign trail.

Posted by: Tom | May 19, 2008 11:14:57 AM

I do have to say that the attacks on Chelsea Clinton by Obama supporters during this campaign were some of the most horrific and unfair attacks on a candidate's family that I have ever seen.

Posted by: hopesprings52 | May 19, 2008 11:13:27 AM

Race will always be a force in this country, because that is the way most citizens in this country want it to remain...so they can feel superior.

To hear a woman in this country state Obama shouldn't be president because it wouldn't be right for a black man to have power over white people....

THAT kind of statement makes me hate this country, the racist people in it, and all that this country is starting to stand for.

THAT is what is wrong with this country....and will be its ultimate downfall. Divided We Fail.

Off Limits? Was Obama sleeping through the 90's when the press wouldn't lay off Hillary? He's dreaming.

Posted by: A reader in Georgia | May 19, 2008 11:09:02 AM

Why won’t Michelle Obama speak for herself? It sounds so odd for Barack Obama to keep explaining what she meant. If Michelle Obama is going to be the First Lady, she can’t keep speaking out, expressing her opinions, and then claim to be off-limits for any criticism. Somebody needs to sit down and have a substantive interview with Michelle Obama and let her clear the air – on “unpatriotic” sounding comments, on Rev. Wright and TUCC, etc. After she goes on the record about these issues – just once – then she can talk about moving on to more important issues.

Posted by: Barb in MN | May 19, 2008 11:08:04 AM

J alive, but no well. The world has shown great excitement in Obama. The GB and French press are excited.

There was a hoser posting that Obama should not be compared to JFK. Ted Kennedy made that comparison.

We need to get good candidates into the process. I like Sebelius from Kansas. I am sure you all have your favorites. We need to push those people to the fron and get rid of the old boy scheme that is in play today.

Remember as long as Michelle says things which help his candidacy everything is cool. But if she goes into territory which damages me, lay off. That's pretty good. Hillary should have tried that approach with Bill -- but the media would never have bought into it. The Obama crush is back -- the media is swooning again and now casting McCain as the baddie who stands in his way.

Read my post. I will vote for McCain. I resigned the Democratic party. And I entered it as a member campaigning for Jimmy Carter way back when.

Obama has already declared himself the presumptive nominee, his "Mission Accomplished" party is scheduled for tomorrow night, and this is the first time in the ENTIRE CAMPAIGN that Michelle has said anything positive about Hillary and her incredible role as a woman running for president. This must be part of the Obama "make nice to Hillary supporters so they will vote for me" plan. It won't work Obama! We will NEVER, NEVER vote for you or your anti-american wife!

Posted by: frisco girl | May 19, 2008 10:51:41 AM

Stop comparing Obama with JFK. Kennedy was a decorated war hero with 14 years in Congress before he ran for president. Obama is no JFK and any attempt to paint him as such is insulting.

Wonder where he would be if all the milllions who voted prior to the media finally spotlighting exactly who they are?

I have always voted Democrat. I resigned from them. What a disgrace the Demo factory has caused with caucusing, disallowing MI & Fl.

Gimme a break, people, Obama has not the experience nor the morales to step into the White House as commander in chief to get us out of this mess America is in!

LA in Indiana, No editing was done. In a speech, Michelle said "for the first time in my adult life I'm proud of my country". Upon the campaign hearing what she'd said, and realizing that some serious damage control was in order, she inserted the word "really" into the phrase in a later speech. Trying to put the genie back in the bottle is a nifty magic trick, but most people are too smart to fall for it.

Posted by: HoosierSue | May 19, 2008 10:41:04 AM

This is yet another display of Obama not being up to the task of being President. He just have the mental strength for it.
Isn't it just amazing that every anti-Obama bit of campaining is met with the mainstream media's top story of Obama being "offended" by mean rivals not playing fair. C'mon Obama, if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.. er.. race.

Say, why doesn't Mrs. Clinton ask Mr. Obama for some delegates--and I'm sure he'd oblige her, being the gentleman he is--instead of calling him out in West Virginia and Kentucky just to embarrass and diminish the man in front of America and the world, thereby unduly upping the chances of the Republicans in the upcoming elections?

Is the problem that the Clinton posters have with Obama that he is a traditional family person?

I think it is interesting that the campaigns have gone so light on Bill Clinton. This is the guy who pardoned felons amd terrorists for money for his library and votes for Hillary.

Hillary was a terrible candidate. If it was not that she is married to a guy who exposes himself, she would never have gotten this far.

Posted by: disambiguates | May 19, 2008 10:37:19 AM

Michelle said, "If you can't run your own house, how do you think you can run the White House?" of course, she was trash talking Hillary and Bill. Why does Obama think his wife should be off limits when Obama and his campaign go out of their way to bad mouth Bill? Once again, Obama proves he is a spineless wimp, who does not have the fight to make it to the White House. To the DNC - we want Hillary, she is a fighter, not a whiner!

Posted by: frisco girl | May 19, 2008 10:36:21 AM

If a spouse is campaigning for the candidate he or she is NOT off limits. I am an Obama supporter. But people who think Michelle Obama should be off limits should consider whether that same rule should apply to Bill Clinton or Cindy McCain.

Posted by: Katya | May 19, 2008 10:27:34 AM

Jane, she was being divisive.

Your selective amnesia during this election cycle is totally overwhelming. You all have become just like the republicans. You couldn't beat your opponent by being honest and building up yourself, so you had to start tearing him down and working just like the republicans, by manufacturing scandals to try to get ahead.

This country might once again be great if you all can stop being so deceitful and dishonest.

Posted by: LA in Indiana | May 19, 2008 10:25:46 AM

Sorry folks, but I agree with Michelle Obama, this is the first time in MY adult life I was REALLY proud to be an American. After Nixon, Reagan, Bush #1, Clinton and GWB, there were not many proud moments in those years. But I thought Americans could overcome race, gender and elect a person based on the issues. It didn't last long, I'm not very proud of us at all. We are embarassing ourselves again and the world is watching, again.

Posted by: Really? | May 19, 2008 10:23:23 AM

Now BO is going to experience the republican machine down on him. Because to tell the truth, all the villain language was launched by the republican anti-Clinton machine. It was then convenient to BO, he even bought into it, calling HC divisive. Now it crushes down on him, it's only the beginning. Don't count on HC supporters to side with him.
And let the DNC with their string of manipulators help him. The rest of the world can lay back and watch like a matchgame.
If things were more candid than they want to make believe they are, this primary season would have been much better.

Why did they cut the word really??

Posted by: Really? | May 19, 2008 10:14:22 AM

If she stumps and speaks she is fair game and should be held accountable for her words just as if she were a campaign operative.

If she appears at his side and does not activly campaign she should be treated with the respect any partner or child should receive.

If she is not proud of America and says so on the stump everyone should question her.

One makes a target through their own actions.

Posted by: Smith | May 19, 2008 10:12:36 AM

Sorry Obama, you married her, you're stuck with her. Just like Hillary has to take the bad and the good of Bill, Michelle is most certainly a facet of your life that bears examination.

She did say "for the first time in my adult life I'm proud of my country". Just as she called 2008 America a "downright mean" country.

Your daughters should be off-limits to the media (though you might encourage that by stopping the photo-ops with them during your campaign). Your adult wife is most certainly not off-limits.

She's going to be a very visible presence in the White House if you're elected. The people deserve to see what they'd be getting.

I bet you that if Cindy Mccain would of said something that would be replayed in a DNC political ad everyone in this blog would be crying foul. Do you think bill (when he was running for president) would of enjoyed snippets of hillary's words taken out of context in a political attack ad and not said nothing about it. This goes to show you that the republicans know that they cant beat him in the fall and so now they are going after his wife. Pretty pathetic!!!!!!!! they need to come up with something better than that.

len, stop the lies!

What names did Barack and Michelle call the clintons? What did he call hillary, besides 'she thinks she's annie oakley'? What did he call bill, besides bill?

The Obama campaign DID NOT accuse the clintons of anything having to do with their daughter, and they said nothing about murder in relation to the clintons.

It is truly sad to watch people like you. The only way you can 'win' is to tear someone else down, or to fabricate lies and scandals about them.

The clintons are the ones who started this tear down. If they were so great, then that greatness should be able to speak for itself. But what did they do? Start attacking Obama....bill did it, hillary did it, and Bob Johnson did it for them.

Another great example of Barack's tenuous connection to reality. News Flash: if you are running for president and your spouse makes bone headed comments about this country-- like saying America is "mean" or that our "souls are broken" or confessing to be proud for the first time, it WILL be an issue.Think about the reaction to Hillary's comment about baking cookies! That comment seems pretty innocuous compared some of the bitter fare that Michelle has served up during this campaign. She seems to harbor a deep-seated grievance toward this country. I suspect that the Obamas absorbed more of Jeremiah Wright's vitriol than either of them would like to admit.

I watched that interview fascinated by the arrogance of the threats. This is a couple with campaign supporters that called Senator Clinton some of the vilest names I've ever read in any Presidential campaign, accused the Clinton's of pimping out there daughter, repeated rumors of murders, even sent me a mailer this weekend accusing the Clintons of supporting companies that introduced poisoned grains into India and Indochina.

And they threaten? This man is weak kneed in the extreme, and he wants to talk to Hamas without preconditions?

Puhleeze!
