Obama Declares Michelle Off-Limits

May 19, 2008 9:43 AM

On Good Morning America today, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, took issue with a Tennessee Republican Party attack on his wife Michelle for her February comments that "for the first time in my adult lifetime I'm really proud of this country."

The Tennessee GOP launched a web video making much hay out of those comments, suggesting she is unpatriotic.

"The GOP -- should I be the nominee -- I think can say whatever they want to say about me, my track record," Obama told Robin Roberts. (Watch HERE) "If they think that they're going to try to make Michelle an issue in this campaign, they should be careful. Because that I find unacceptable. The notion that you start attacking my wife? Or my family? Michelle is the most honest, the best person I know. She is one of the most caring people I know. She loves this country. For them to try to distort or to play snippets of her remarks in ways that are unflattering to her I think is just low class and I think most of the American people would think that as well."

He also said, "these folks should lay off my wife."

For her part, Michelle Obama denied reports that she did not want Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, to serve as her husband's vice president.

"I think the world of Hillary Clinton," Michelle Obama said. "Particularly, as a woman, having watched her go through a lot of what I might be going through, and doing it with a level of grace, and raising a phenomenal daughter, which -- I have two girls -- and I know how hard just in the little bit of exposure I've had to this what she's had to deal with, and what she's accomplished. So that being said, you know, there is no way that I would say absolutely no to one of the most successful and powerful and groundbreaking women on this planet. What I have said is that I think one of the things that the nominee has earned is the right to pick the vice president that they think will suit them... I think this should be Barack's say, through and through."

If you can attack Chelsea Clinton, I guess Michelle is fair game.

What??!!! Obama needs to understand that the candidate's spouse is part of the package. His wife is essentially running to be the First Lady of the USA. She is as much a public figure as he is and she is totally fair game for questions, inquiry and scrutiny. Especially when she makes public speeches. Is he saying that, because she is his wife, she can say anything she chooses to say -- about herself or him -- and not be held accountable for it.

Puhleez, give us a break. The potential First Lady isn't a public figure? Is this the kind of change he has in mind for us? I have the audacity to hope not.

Obama (who has yet to officially secure the Dem nomination) is now appearing as the official Dem nominee.

When Hillary did the SAME, she was called arrogant.

Double standard?

He can try and say she is off limits but it was ok for them to attack Bill Clinton.

I am soooooooooo sick of Obama and his followers. I will not vote for him in Nov. I just will not vote.

Don't blame me I voted for Hillary!!.... I should get my bumpersticker ordered now!

So the media needs to lay off Michelle, but Cindy McCain and Bill Clinton are fair game?

Sounds like a double standard.

If it's not, I'm open to any logical and rational explanation.

If Michelle chooses to appear in public or on national media she absolutely is open to criticism.

If the Obamas can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen and go back to Illinois.

It's called POLITICS, people. Get over it.

the obama supporters double standards shine like the north star on a clear night.

If Obama is so troubled by Michelle being (rightfully) put under the microscope by media....why doesn't he throw her in the same cell Wright, Farrakahn, Jackson, and Sharpton seem to be locked in? Granny too. Doesn't anyone think it's wierd they're in a lockdown?

Here go go again.....
The first card Barack played was the race card and he turned any criticisms of his relationship with extremists or his naive lack of substance as racism...
while at the same time blacks voted for him for the one and only reason that he is black.

For months now, Barack's attack guards has been persecuting and terrorizing Hillary's spouse, Bill Clinton, with the intention to defame him and ridicule him...
Now, Barack Hussein Obama is warning and threatening with harm anyone criticizing his spouse Michelle Obama.....

Here we go again.....Welcomed to the real world of politics!
All Presidential candidates have to be scrutinized in detail and their past relationships, their families and actions weighted before they are seriously considered for the highest office in our country, the commander in chief, the President of the United States of America.

Here we go again.......we can be fooled once, twice, but we can not be fooled all the time.

Obama is starting to show an extremely thin skin. It's not McCains fault that he locked up his nomination very early and you're locked in a clawing and scratching battle with Hillary. He's trying to campaign against McCain while battling Hillary. Close the deal on your nomination and then you will have plenty of time to fight McCain.

Michelle is fair game on her speeches and public appearances, and any connections with Obama dealings is fair. Her personal accounting is not, so in that her speech saying that she was never proud of this country in her adult life is fair. Her racist speech in the church is fair (soon to come) This is about Barrack's character and who he associates with is relevant.

Since he wants to give orders I as a citizen which makes me his boss, say resign fro the Senate now!!

wow you can tell its the day before a primary. They have talked trash about Hillary for years she has run her campaign with no help from the MSM kicking her all the way now they will tear down Obama and His wife do you really think all the rich americans want bush's tax cuts to expire in 2010 with out a heck of a fight that is all they are worried about.

I think that Republicans are going to overreach on Michelle Obama and make the passion the commentators have wanted to see overflow. The thing about all of this is the married men I know are FIERCELY protective of their wives and mothers. Once someone decides they can ridicule the woman, it is enough to set them off.

If Republicans think an irritated and impassioned BHO is better than the distant reserved primary BHO, maybe they need to take her on. Maybe they should hit the woman and invite the press to tear Cindy McCain's finances apart.

*sarcasm* Sound strategy.

The democrates have become nothing more then a hypocritical joke of a party. From Dean denouncing Republican tactics that the Dems have used for years to this latest nonsense coming out of the Obama camp. It's getting to the point that they can replace McCain with a circus clown and the Dems would still have no chance of winning in November. Lay off your wife Obama? How many times have you mentioned Bill Clinton during this campaign? I realize it's a bit different since he served eight years as president but give me a break. If you don't want her attacked then take her off your campaign trail.

Posted by: Tom | May 19, 2008 11:14:57 AM

I do have to say that the attacks on Chelsea Clinton by Obama supporters during this campaign were some of the most horrific and unfair attacks on a candidate's family that I have ever seen.

Race will always be a force in this country, because that is the way most citizens in this country want it to remain...so they can feel superior.

To hear a woman in this country state Obama shouldn't be president because it wouldn't be right for a black man to have power over white people....

THAT kind of statement makes me hate this country, the racist people in it, and all that this country is starting to stand for.

THAT is what is wrong with this country....and will be its ultimate downfall. Divided We Fail.

Off Limits? Was Obama sleeping through the 90's when the press wouldn't lay off Hillary? He's dreaming.

Why won’t Michelle Obama speak for herself? It sounds so odd for Barack Obama to keep explaining what she meant. If Michelle Obama is going to be the First Lady, she can’t keep speaking out, expressing her opinions, and then claim to be off-limits for any criticism. Somebody needs to sit down and have a substantive interview with Michelle Obama and let her clear the air – on “unpatriotic” sounding comments, on Rev. Wright and TUCC, etc. After she goes on the record about these issues – just once – then she can talk about moving on to more important issues.

LA, I saw that earlier this morning, what a shame. Ferraro had it rough when she ran and it really divided the party, she should know better.

J alive, but no well. The world has shown great excitement in Obama. The GB and French press are excited.

There was a hoser posting that Obama should not be compared to JFK. Ted Kennedy made that comparison.

We need to get good candidates into the process. I like Sebelius from Kansas. I am sure you all have your favorites. We need to push those people to the fron and get rid of the old boy scheme that is in play today.
